I chanced upon a Netflix movie Blue Zones, Secrets of Longevity , a web documentary series. The documentary explores the secrets of Longevity in five places on the earth documents the common factors behind longevity.

The places were not uniform, mountains,Islands, Urban areas.. However following mental attitudes play a very important part.They are,

  • Don’t Take anything seriously.Most important is that we should not take ourselves seriously. Rigid discipline, Strict time schedule,urge to complete things within the deadline,laying down rules for us and others…These are to be shunned. Do things naturally at your place, in your terms. Heavens are not going to fall if you don’t complete things within a time frame.All these things mentioned above were designed to make you live longer: however these very things ,instead of increasing longevity, have ended up in improving material benefits ,most of which are not needed
  • Longevity, not Avoidance of death is the goal Death cannot be avoided.Lingevity can be increased.
  • Don’t be Angry, towards others and towards you. Have you ever reflected on whether your anger at some one solves any issue? In a professional environment too, your anger might appear to have delivered the result, but it would reduce long range productivity.Anger at others would alienate them from you, however dear they are to you. Biologically ,adrenaline is pumped more and it affects your body for sometime,in some cases for days.Anger is a negative emotion. It doesn’t let you focus.Being angry with you is equally harmful. Think, whom or what are you angry at when you are angry with you?
  • Laugh. Laugh , not at others, but at you,at your foibles.Laugh like a child. Don’t hold back. Laughter need not be regulated. Whatever you do , do with happiness.
  • Make others happy. It doesn’t cost you. It brings you rich dividends. Recall how happy you were when someone made you happy, someone praised you.
  • Don’t point to others’mistakes. Everyone commits mistakes. You also do. What do you gain by pointing out others’mistakes, except a momentary pleasure that you know better? Remember people love those who appreciate them, not who censures and points out their mistakes.You like people who do not mind your mistakes.
  • Express your emotions freely whatever it is,sadness,happiness ….. If you need to cry, then cry. Don’t hold back.
