Brahmin Gotra List

I published a Post on the Surnames of Brahmin Community.

I had in my mind to publish a complete list of Brahmin Gotras.

I promptly forgot about it.

Couple of Days ago when I received an alliance proposal for my brother’s Grandson, I was unable to check the Gotra, whether it belongs to the Brahmin Community.

Later I checked it out and it was a Gotra of Brahmin Community.

I am posting a list from the available resources and people may also contribute with authentication to make this List a Comprehensive one.

Each gotra takes the name of a famous Rishi or sage.

Gotra is a concept of patrilineal classification, which identifies the families of a caste.

The original rishis after whom the gotras were named were just Seven in number .

Gotras were further subdivided into ganas and sub ganas.

Another concept is that of Pravara of Rishis who were a few of the most learned and capable sages belonging to that gotra.

Each Brahmin was thus known by his gotra, pravar, sutra and shakha.

There are exceptions to the rule too. For example the descendents of Maharishis Bhrigu and Angirasa cannot marry, because of the same Pravara Rishis, which are common to the two individuals.

The weddings in India are fixed as per the Gotra of the bride and groom.

Gotra matching is one of the most important concerns in North indian Hindu matrimony.

Wedding in similar Gotra is strictly prohibited.

A Gotra has three Rishis.

This indicates the fact some of the Rishis had more than one wife, at different times , for example Parasara.

I that case the male offspring from each of the Wives are added and the third if there are any more differentiation.

Readers may contribute in this area.

Another instance is when a Rishi changes his Varna.

Viswamitra was a Kshatriya and his original name was Kausika.

Later he became a Brahmin after he reealized Brahma Gnana.

Then he was called a Barhmin and his Gotra was changed from Kausika to Viswamitra.

I appreciate Mr. Natarajan Iyer’s comments about maintaining purity form of Kshatriya caste in Dhartarashtra and Pandu by Sage Vedavyasa through his ascetic powers. But there are several instances where intercaste progeny were there and their caste went by patriarchial (father’s caste) system of identifying caste even in Dwapara Yuga. In fact Santhanu (Kshatriya) married Satyavathi, who is born to King of Chedi and cursed Apsara. She can not be a pure Kshatriya if we take into Anuloma and Pratiloma system. She was also adopted daughter of fisherman and married to Kshatriya. However her sons Chitrangada and Vichitraveerya have been identified as Kshtriyas only and their caste was not through any Pratiloma system. Did Santhanu has the same capability as that of Sage Veda Vyasa to implant Kshtriya gene in them? Even Bhishma case was also not a pure form of Kshatriya if we go by the same system of Pratiloma. He was son of a Kshtriya and Devata Ganga. There are several instances where Kshtriayas married to Yadavas. Yadavas are never considered to be Kshatriyas. Arjuna married to Subhadra (Yadava) and whose progeny continued as Kshatriyas of Kuru Clan subsequnetly. (Abhimanyu-Parishit-Janamejaya etc.) Can we consider that prtiloma system was not in practice as in many instances father caste being adapted to the progeny, If we read Mahabharat, there are many instance of intercaste marriages and their progeny were identified with their father’s caste.

ASURI is the title to every person who belong to HARITHA GOTRA. The word Asuri is being used by one and all since the VEDIC PERIOD
( As per Atharvana Veda VII 38.2)

      2. Natarajan Iyer Avatar
        Natarajan Iyer

Asuri was a great personality and scholar par excellence, who was among the top ten scholars of that time and he lived around the same time as the great Yajnavalkya ( The founder of Shukla Yajur Veda ) and they were known to each other.

Āsuri Gotra has four śāsanas ( practices/ doctrines ) : abhicāriā, bhalārhiā, malaiyā and pāñcāliā. It suggests that this Āsuri (literally, demonic) gotra was related to rituals like abhicāra ( Abhichara is mentioned in the Atharva Veda, i.e. one of the four Vedas where it is mentioned in the hymns. However, the practice of Abhicharas was meant to be directed at Asuras, evil spirits, demons, powerful enemies and even sorcerers ) associated with Tantra (perhaps Vāmamārgi path of the tantra ) ( The science of tantra has two main branches, which are known as vama marga and dakshina marga. Vama marga is the left path which combines sexual life with yoga practices in order to explode the dormant energy centres. Dakshina marga is the right path of yoga practices without sexual enactment. ) Now, this might have prevailed in parts of Pañcāla ( Panchala was the name of an ancient kingdom of northern India, located in the Ganges-Yamuna Doab of the upper Gangetic plain, encompassing the modern-day states of Uttarakhand and western Uttar Pradesh in those ancient times )

( The Panchalas occupied the country to the east of the Kurus, between the upper Himalayas and the river Ganges. It roughly corresponded to modern Budaun, Farrukhabad and the adjoining districts of Uttar Pradesh. The country was divided into Uttara-Panchala and Dakshina-Panchala. The northern Panchala had its capital at Ahichatra, (also known as Adhichhatra and Chhatravati, near present-day Ramnagar village in Aonla tehsil of Bareilly district, while southern Panchala had it capital at Kampilya or Kampil in Farrukhabad district. The famous city of Kanyakubja or Kannauj was situated in the kingdom of Panchala. )

So, asuri, the sage who lived around the same time as the great sage yajnavalkya, may be said to belong to the Haritha Gothra for which the Pravaram is Aangirasa, Ambarisha, Yauvanaachva -Thrayarsheya, pravaranvitha

Yes Asuri Gotra people are Goud / Gaur Brahmins.

Gaur Brahims are the Brahmins originated from a small village of west Bengal and Bengal desh border the name of that village is GAUR or GOUR located near the Indo-Bangladesh international border. It was founded by Lakshmana and was given name as Lakshmanavati and later it was known as Gouda and then Gour after the Muslims invaded Bengal in 11th century when the brahmins moved to northern INDIA.

King Parikshit (son of Abhimanu and Uttara) and Grandson of Arjuna was the last King of Dwapar Yuga. Rather it is said that Kaliyug started within the time of King Parikshit. Parikshit did a Maha Yajna for which he was advised by rishis that to perform that yajna GAUR Brahmans are needed. Thus Parikshit invited Gaur Brahmans from west bengal. After the Yajna was over the Brahmins asked to return to their native place. But were requested to stay there by King Parikshit. The Brahmins then questioned Parikshit that there are not suitable brahmin girls available in his kingdom and hence how will they continue there clan/Vansh. On this Parikshit offered them to marry the royal girls( daughters, sisters of royals). This is why it is said that on a comparative basis, Gaur Brahmins are a bit more arrogant then rest.

Vadhula Gotra is also known with different variations as Vardhula, Vadoola, Vathoola etc. In this Gotra many of them belong to South Indian brahmins mostly in Andhra, Tamilnadu and Karnataka. My original surname Kasturi which later changed to Ayilavarapu about 4 generations back. These two surnames are one and same and belong to same Gotra. Pravaras are Bhargava, Veetahavya and Savedasa. Bhargava is only a representation of descendants of Bhrigu Maharshi. You may not find Bhargava as Rishi seperately. Veetahavya (Veeta Habya or Veeta Gavya variatiions) in some texts say a King belonging to Janaka vamsa who became Sishya of Bhrigu and turned to Brahmin under Sishya Parampara. in some texts he has been shown as another sage. Sutra is Apasthamba, Sakha is Krishna Yajurweda. I would appreciate if any one can throw more light on sage Vadhoola and Gotra Pravaras.

Sri Natarajan Iyer , please clarify the following:
Veda Vyasa was born to Brahmin Parashara and fisher woman Satyavathi. How he has been considered as Brahmin?
Dhritarashtra and Pandu were born to Veda Vyasa and kshatriya women Ambika and Ambalika (Kasiraj daughters), why do Mahabaharata mention them Dhritarashtra and Pandu and their offspring as Kshtriyas?
In the terminology you mentioned in intercaste progeny no purity form takes place. How this nomenclature was never mentioned in Mahabharat which is considered to be the Panchama Veda

This is a very good question. Usually I do not get into explanations since the detailed explanations have to stop at some point where experience and silence are the next in sequential order as per the law of nature.

But this wordpress blog spot of Mr.Ramanan is presently, as of today, among the few ones that are rendering good service and hence let me reply to your questions here. The thread-cloth illustration directly answers your question. But read this first and then proceed to that part contained in this reply since that would bring more clarity.

      1) In tamil, there is a proverb ” rishi moolam nadhee moolam thaeda koodadhu ”
Meaning “ Do not attempt to trace the root of a great sage and a river “

Because the two are not ordinary truths but they are extraordinary truths.

Antae rishi moolamu nadhee moolamu chooda koodadhu.

Yendhukantae, adhee saamaanya sathyamu kaadhu, asaamaanya sathyamu.

      How ?

Say for example, there are four Men. One Man is capable of identifying pure petrol but not anything else.

Another Man is capable of identifying pure oil but not anything else.

The third Man is capable of identifying wax but not anything else.

The fourth Man is capable of identifying grease lubricant but not anything else.

By nature, these capabilities are present in each of these four men.

Now, there is a fifth Man who enters the scene.

He is capable of identifying petrol, oil, wax, grease and many more chemicals. This capability is present in him by nature.

This fifth man is the Rishi ( Great Sage ). The other four are ordinary men with limited capabilities.

Now VISUALIZE within your mind, the small cloth pad made of thread of four different colours, intertwined with each other.

      NOW OPEN YOUR EYES.

If I tell you to pull out the white thread alone, you can easily do it.

If I tell you to pull out the red thread alone, you can easily do it.

If I tell you to pull out the yellow thread alone, you can easily do it.

If I tell you to pull out the brown thread alone, you can easily do it.

But if I tell a six month old child to do this, it cannot do it, since it neither understands colours nor thread nor separation nor the logic.

Similarly, the rishi ( Great Sage ) ( Vyasar, …etc ) are capable of separating the Brahmin gene, the kshatriya gene, the vaishya gene and the shudra gene and activating that by giving life to that one part alone or in different permitted combinations as per that vedic chart that I provided earlier.

The common man is like that six month old child and he does not have that capability to perform gene-structure-variation-isolation-activation.

      _____________

Why is your name not mentioned in the national registry of the citizens of America ?

The answer to this question is “ Not compulsory. It is mentioned in a similar registry in India “

So, similarly, this scientific fact is not explicitly stated in the Panchama Veda – The Mahaabhaaratha.

But it is mentioned in one of the other four Vedas. In fact, it is mentioned even in the Mahabharata ( The Mahabharata and Ramayana are filled with all secrets of nature but those methods of reading the secretive portion cannot be and should not be discussed here or anywhere else since there are rules governing those and we cannot violate those rules ).

As a hint, I can tell you this in telugu ‘ spashttangaa cheppa laedhu. ounu. But, cheppakunaa chaesaaru vyaasa maharshi. mounamlo saadhinchaaru. aa mounaanikee explanation, result lo vundhee ( result is the children of that caste ).

Meaning ” In detail the procedure might not be theoretically explained, but in silence, practically, the demonstration has been done by the Great Sage Vyaasa Maharshi. The explanation to his act in silence, comes out by way of the result ( result is the children of that caste ) ( He pulled out that exclusive kshatriya gene from each of those three women and gave them life ) ( Vyasa’s Father did the same vedic exercise and the Brahmin Gene activated and even among the Brahmin Gene, the HIGHEST QUALITY gene was activated and the Great Sage Vyasa was born ). ( Similar to that thread example that I provided above. Pulling out the differently coloured threads, one by one, as per requirement ).
      _____________

Is caste by birth or by disposition ?

The answer to this question is in the form of another question.

Is a lion, a lion by birth or by it’s roar ? If it stops roaring and starts trumpeting, will it become an elephant ? NO.

Suppose the lion has a temporary health set-back and it starts trumpeting like the elephant, will the lion become the elephant ?
No, the lion remains a lion, irrespective of it’s condition in life. This is because it has been created as a lion by the creator God.

The ordinary Men and Women cannot understand the High Truth. So, they are advised to respect the Greats and continue with their duty. As they do so, one day their mind will develop that high level maturity and they can understand God’s Law of Nature.

When a person starts tracing the root of a river, at one point, it will lead him to a BLANK.
A plainly INVISIBLE range. A plainly empty space.

There his mind will be unable to comprehend HOW ?

HOW CAN A RIVER COME FROM SPACE ?

Now again this is a HIGH TRUTH and instead of damaging his mind with low maturity levels, his mind is trained with such caution ( that proverb ) and as he continues with life, performing his duties, one day, he develops that maturity and understands God’s Law of Nature and the birth of the river ( it’s root ) from space and beyond space.

    3. NVG Iyer Avatar
      NVG Iyer

Then was the Great Vyasa the ancestor of Pandu and dhritirashtra of the mahabharatha ?

      NO

Just as the cook comes to your home, uses the fire from your fuel supply, uses the utensils and food ingredients belonging to you and cooks food, so too, similarly, the great sages such as Vyasa Maharshi had the capability to
bring to active existence, the subtle imprint of the genetic structure of the husband present within the wife ( widow post husband’s death ).

Till the completion of the dwaapara yuga ( Of Lord Krishna ), this practise was adopted by the common man too when the brother dies and to continue the race, his brother would marry the widow.

This was called NIYOGA and is PROHIBITED in kali yuga.

Just as the ashwamedha yagna is said to be prohibited in kali yuga and should not be performed, so too Niyoga is prohibited in kaliyuga and should not be practised.

This is because some natural effects remain inactive in kaliyuga and as per the law of nature they are not supposed to be operated. This is similar to a secret chambers locked and entry barred.
Similarly in kaliyuga, Niyoga is prohibited.

So the great sage Veda Vyasa Maharshi only aided the re-activation of the subtle imprint of the genetic structure of the fathers of Pandu, Dhritirashtra and Vidura. He is not their ancestor.

No. Brahmin Kshatriya belongs to the offspring of a Brahmin Father and a Kshatriya woman. Technically son born of a Brahmin Father and A Kshatriya woman is a Brahmin.

No Shri Ramanan. Here I produce the list of the caste of the father, mother and the children, under different types of union ( inter-caste ). This is a rare piece of information that is mentioned in the vedic scriptures. Here it is.

Anuloma means in the natural order (union between a elevated caste man and a subordinate class woman) and pratiloma is its reverse

Father + Mother = Progeny [ known as (Anuloma or Pratiloma type) – Is of this caste. Only the progeny ( children get genetically transformed into this caste. Parents remain genetically the caste into which they were born ]
[ But if it is a pratiloma union ( Union between an elevated caste woman and sub-ordinate class man ), then the father ( man ), the mother ( woman ) and the children, all of them get transformed genetically to the castes as mentioned below, as per the category applicable to them.
        Brahman + Brahman = Brahman
        Brahman + Kshatriya = Brahmakshatriya ( also called murdhabhishiktha ) ( Anuloma )
        But brahmakshatriya + brahmakshatriya = Anuloma ( But Non-Kshatriya )

Brahman + Vaishya = Ambashta (Anuloma)
Brahman + Shudra = Nishad (Parasava) (Anuloma)
Kshatriya + Brahman = Suta (Pratiloma)
        Kshatriya + Vaishya = Anuloma

No. Technically speaking it is not so. If you see the list, it is brahmakshatriya. Long ago, around the early 1990s, i remember a brahmin mutt refusing to conduct the upanayanam of a boy whose father was a brahmin but mother kshatriya.

This list places the brahmin father and kshatriya mother’s children as brahmakshatriya and not brahmins

I am of the view that the principle patriarchal society has been accepted. As offspring between a brahmin father and a woman belonging to other two varnas get brahmin gotra. As to Mutt , They do everything by rote.Regds

        1) Patriarchal society is a mis-nomer. The term PATRIARCHAL has now become a derogatory reference to the natural ability of the Man alone to create ( fetch a soul to earth, in spiritual terms ). Irrespective of what feminists and others say, no matter how vociferously, the fact of nature remains so and it is wisdom to adhere to that law of nature. But that line of speech would see us unnecessarily arguing with multiple groups. So, over a period of time, even the vedic experts within the mutt maintain silence since it is said ” The fate of kali yugam is this. So, why get worked up ? ” So, each one performing his duty brings good to entire humanity. This is how many families live today.

        2) The list from the vedas clearly speak of the category into which the offspring between a brahmin father and a woman belong to.

So, the other two varnas DO NOT get brahmin gotra.

Biologically the offspring between a Lion and Tigress is called a LIGER. It is neither a lion nor a tiger.

Even a red rose and yellow rose when subject to hybridization, gives a mixed colour. It gives neither a red rose nor a yellow rose.

But red rose and red rose give red rose. Yellow rose and Yellow rose, give yellow rose.

Similarly among humans too. That list is a scientific categorization when the english language was nowhere around. Hence the sanskritized terms might sound strange. But that is more due to lack of orientation towards sanskrit. Scientifically it reflects the effect produced when two individuals from two diverse inner designs ( genetic frame-work ), co-habitat and produce off-springs.

        3) Mutt cannot do anything by rote. They have to follow the vedic injunctions. They do exactly that. Maybe, it is incomprehensible to the common folk who have moved far away from many a fact of nature and vedic life.

He says in marathi, that his gotra is GAUTAMA Gotra, that his ancestors were brahmins and he speaks of a brahmin sangam and the need for the boost of power as in the past. Beyond this, a few words of his marathi, i am unable to comprehend, but the gist is what i was able to comprehend.
