Virginity After Marriage Mahabharata’s View Part 1.

One finds instances of illegitimate relationships between men and women, a girl conceiving before marriage and being restored Virginity in Hindu Epics.

You may also note that Jesus was born of an unwed Mother and Mary was declared to be a Virgin.

This does not seem to be morally correct, at least in the Indian context because Hindu values assert Virginity and strict Marriage Laws.

Famous instances that come to one’s mind are the birth of Karna, who was born of Kunti when she was a virgin of Aditya/Surya and Mathsyakanni/Sathyavati, mother of Vyasa.

In both instances Kunti andSathyavati were restored of their virginity and went on to produce more children;in the case of Kunti through the Devas to beget Yudhistir,Bhima,Arjuna,  Matri.Nakula and Sahadeva; Sathyavati begot  Chitrangada and Vichtraveerya.

I have found the explanations of those who explain these away by simply brushing aside this by stating that these were granted by the Rishis and Gods and that’s it.

I am prepared to accept this as Hinduism, unlike other Religions encourages detailed discussion , debate and gives its final decision as Dharma.

Considering this, I was sure that the Mahabharata would have an explanation for this seemingly illegitimate behavior.

Krishnadwaypayana, who was later to become Vyasa, was born of Sathyavati, later called Mathsyakanni/Parimalagandhi and Sage Parasara, the Grand son of Sage Vasishta,son of Sakti, who gave his backbone to Indra to prepare The Vajrayudha.

Vyasa was born to Sathyavati, who was being brought up by a Fisherman.

When she was rowing a boat across the River Ganga , Sage Parasara saw her , Vyasa was the result and Sathyavati was restored her virginity.

It is said that child is stays in the womb of the mother for a stipulated period for Beings on Earth and for the Devas, Demi-gods, children are born immediately.

Thus was born Vyasa.

As soon as he was born Vyasa grew to be an adult , went to the Ganga River , filled a pot with water and offered it to his father, Parasara as a mark of respect.

Satyavati was by the side of Parasara through whom she begot Vyasa.

Urged by maternal instincts she touched Vyasa on his head.

( It is worth noting that even the Mother is expected to touch their children at the appropriate places only,mother the the top of the head of a son, Father the the top of the head of the daughter)

Vyasa shrgged her hands off Sathyavati and said,

‘Why do you touch me?

You have become unclean after you have been made a Virgin after my birth.

You are a woman apart from me, Parastree.

A parastree is not expected to touch a man.

Go away”

      The Source I have quoted says the way I have posted. Mahabharata Adi Parva by Srinivasachriar.The portion have quoted are in the book wih a Note,The details of Sathyavathi and Parasara are called ‘Prashipda’ , that is in excess and that the information as obtaining is produce here”

  1. Blatant hypocrisy and chauvinism!! Idiots like you are the reason that Indians have such regressive attitude towards women. Kindly provide references as where on the books are there any mention of “restoration of virginity”. You, in your ignorant, misguided, misogynist mindset completely ignore the tatva in these books. Ponder on this if your limited cerebral capacity allows you to: Why is virginity a premium only for women, while for men there is no question of the same? See if you can come up with an answer to that in a way that treats men and women as equals.

  2. I am sure it is only a typo. Bhishma was not the son of Satyavati. Holy mother Ganga was Bhishma’s mother


    • Sathyavathi is another name given to her.
      She is Ganga/Ganges who was cursed to be born on the earth for having been looked upon by the Vasus.
      She was born of a Fish because of a desire of her Pitrus for having desired a Husband like Vasu(of Puru Vamsa) when he was roaming the Heavens.
      As she was born of a Fish she had unbearable stench around her when she was desired by Parasara.
      She requested Parasara that she become sweet smelling after she delivered a child(Bhishma).
      She became such and Vyasa states that her body odor was so powerful that it was smelt by the others for one Yojana,8 miles) and hence she was called Parimalagandhi.
      You are correct it was Ganges.
