  • Sri Lankan Tamils Woes Continue UPFA In Place Of LTTE

The Article by by Prof S. Ratnajeevan H. Hoole in Sri Lanka Guardian speaks volumes of the Sri Lankan Tamils’ continuing agony.

Tamils are subjected to humiliation and insults in Sri Lanka still.

The Government has replaced the LTTE in brutality.

The Tamils are caught between the Devil and the Deep Sea.

    When will this end?

Please read my blogs filed under Sri Lanka,Tamils.

    The Agony of The Tamils.
    Sri Lankan Tamils Under Siege.

    Excerpts from the article.

When I returned home in 1995 with our pet Dalmatian with its spots, hostile crowds gathered around us at Katunayake with shouts of Koti-Balla (Tiger-Dog). On other trips I had been taken straight to the Katunayake Police Station, and held up at Vanuniya and released after my friend travelling with me was arrested. I have been held up at Omanthai by the STF for four hours with fellow bus passengers and told that there was a change of guard at Elephant Pass and we would be held till the men from Elephant Pass arrived on foot and if they failed to arrive we would be shot.

Today, three years after the end of hostilities, Tamils arriving at Katunayake are still watched. Passengers report being asked for a bribe at immigration; some routinely seem to be handing in their passports with a few thousand rupee notes inside. It may not be necessary but the Tamil psyche believes it to be so. In LTTE times the same timid passengers paid a fee to the LTTE at Omanthai.

    …..

Far more seriously, almost everyone looking for personal benefits joined the LTTE. Even decent men joined to get passes for their children. Others joined the death squads for power. LTTE agents sat through university teacher union meetings. No opposition was tolerated. The LTTE, though hostile to its opponents, had a reserve of hatred for those who were once with them and then left.
Today, the UPFA is the same. Nishanthan from the TNA was sent to Velanai, Douglas’ fortress, to organize TNA’s youth league. Nishanthan successfully got a man (aged about 37) who was once with the EPDP to join. TNA’s newest member disappeared last week and his wife and children are lost as the police make the motions of investigating.
Just as some joined the LTTE for lucre, today many join the UPFA bandwagon to be able to sell jobs and take bribes for bus route permits. The same businessmen who joined the LTTE for the exclusive right to bid on government road and building contracts in LTTE regions are now with the government. The LTTE sold sand and now the EPDP does. The very same people who helped the LTTE control the Tamil people are now behind the UPFA. An example is KP. One implicated in Rajani Thirangama’s murder and vanished into the Vanni with the LTTE is also back. The LTTE’s Jaffna Political Commissar, a blood thirsty killer, was hunting LTTE-ers for the army after 2009. I was at a Noolaham (an NGO preserving Tamil books) meeting when the army threateningly intervened and held us up until their intelligence officer was brought in to join us.
In a dexterous move, an NGO that provided legal services to the needy and is now run by the founder’s daughter has been essentially bought over through dinners with Governor Chandrasiri, a university Council seat and exclusive agency rights to Milko in Jaffna. In exchange the once respectable NGO provides, among other things, cover to a dreaded LTTE-er by the code name Valluthi through employment.

“Many of us bear the marks of torture on our minds and bodies, but in Sri Lanka you can’t express that you’ve been tortured. If you show your scars to [an official] you risk them telling the authorities and you would likely be detained again.” Saarheerthan, Sri Lankan torture survivor

Survivors’ well-founded fear of speaking out about torture in Sri Lanka is just one of the reasons that little information on the practice has flowed out of the country since the end of the conflict, including reported enforced disappearances and the intimidation of journalists, civil society organisations and doctors.

Keith Best, Freedom from Torture’s Chief Executive, said:

“As well as recording serious psychological impact in virtually all of the individuals whose cases are sampled in this report, the evidence also reveals high levels of visible scarring which strongly suggests a deliberate policy of ‘branding’ and an environment where perpetrators act with impunity. The experiences documented in the report of signed confessions forced through torture, fingerprinting and the deliberate infliction of visible injuries, mean that the risk of future detention and torture for survivors on return to Sri Lanka remains high, especially given the fact that in every single one of these 35 cases release from detention was resultant on the payment of a bribe. Fourteen had reported torture on their return from periods of time spent abroad.

“In light of this new evidence, the UK government must act immediately to ensure it is not returning individuals to a risk of torture in Sri Lanka. It is important that the UK Border Agency reviews and amends the country guidance information used by decision makers who consider asylum applications. While serious concerns remain, the UK should also put in place effective monitoring of any individual it forcibly returns to Sri Lanka to ensure their safety. We hope the UK government will play a leadership role within the international community to ensure that impunity for torture and other serious human rights violations in Sri Lanka is not allowed to reign. This is particularly essential as the Sri Lankan government‘s own Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission is widely considered to be seriously compromised and not capable of delivering justice for the Sri Lankan people.”

  • Bollywood Films’ Barbs South “Madrasi’-Time To Mature.

Perception and depiction of the South Indians in Bollywood Films is obnoxious and disgusting.

This started from form Mehmood‘s’ Padosan‘ portrayal of a South India.

For the North Indians, it looks, any one South of Nagpur is a’ Madrasi’

Seem to be blissfully unaware that there are four States, Karnataka,Andhra and Kerala which, while sharing a common bond with Tamil nadu, have distinct and varied Culture, or is this attitude deliberate?

This makes one eye the North Indians with suspicions from the South.

Often it is noticed, be it Film Fare awards or Top Political Forums, one gets the impression that the South is tolerated and addressed condescendingly.

True, South Indian Films . especially the tamil Films, portray the north Indians as ‘Nimabalki, Nambalki tamil’ though I know many North Indians who know Tamil literature better than South Indians and Tamils in particular.

While the barb by the South sounds immature and fails to evoke laughter, the North’s depiction is insulting

Times of India has produced a good article on this.

    Mehmood ridiculing South Indians, Padosan.jpg.
    Mehmood ridiculing South Indians, Padosan.

    Excerpt.

“He flashes a gaudy lungi, while she drips melodrama, all the while emitting suggestive sounds that starts with a throaty ‘aiyyayo’ and ends in a guttural ‘um’. Makers of upcoming Hindi movie ‘Aiyyaa’ insist that the song ‘Dream-um Wake up-um’ is a tribute to south Indian cinema, and is just a quirky piece in the wacky north-south love story. We have to wait till October 12 to verify that. But internet is already awash with accusations that the song is yet another instance of stereotyping of south Indians, one more ‘aiyyo-amma’ Madrasi cliche from ‘insensitive’ northies.

To add to the confusion, right before the song starts, Rani Mukherjee’s Marathi mulgi says she prefers darkskinned people to fairskinned ones. If Malayalam star Prithviraj Sukumaran is indeed the tall, dark, handsome hero of the movie, then it will be a departure from the idli-loving, sambar-slurping, conservative Madrasis that Bollywood churns out for laughs. What started with the antics of Mehmood’s oily Masterji in ‘Padosan’ (1968), continue, whether it is Omi Vaidya’s sly Chatur Ramalingam in ‘3 Idiots’ or Shah Rukh Khan‘s timid Shekhar Subramanium who gleefully mixes noodles with curd in ‘Ra.One’.

“Any south Indian will find Mehmood’s characterisation insulting,” says Mohan Raman, film historian and actor. He took care that his Seshadri manager in Ranbir Kapoor-movie ‘Ajab Prem Ki Gasab Kahani’ didn’t become ridiculous but hinted at his outsider status…

It is the ‘north-Indian’ gaze that causes the problem, says actor Satish Shah, whose Iyer father in ‘Ra.One’ was quite similar to a stand-up he did for the 1980s sitcom ‘Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi‘. “People of all four states are still Madrasis to many. Probably, Mehmood’s popular character must have set the wrong example,” says Shah. And, yes, he wouldn’t have played the Iyer if not for his equation with Shah Rukh Khan. “I was uncomfortable. As I don’t know the languages, I repeated whatever small words they asked me to say,” he says.

What is an occupational hazard to veteran artists like Shah, are created by those who have nothing new to say, says director Dibakar Banerjee. He created a smart IAS officer, T A Krishnan, in ‘Shanghai’ (2012) after referring books and talking to civil servants. Banerjee topped it with extensive language coaching for actor Abhay Deol to ensure that he never went anywhere near a ‘Tamilian‘ act. “If filmmakers derive material from other films they have seen, then they will end up using stock stereotypes,” he says.

That said, every stereotype has a kernel of truth and ‘Padosan’ is a comedy that used characters from that time effectively. “In Matunga, you could find a conservative music teacher like Mehmood’s Masterji in the 60s,” he says. The same goes for Kishore Kumar’s music composer or Sunil Dutt’s village yokel and the outrageous Quick Gun Murugan character and its Tamil western created for trendy Channel V in the late 90s.

At the core of all stereotypes is a way of defining the other. “In the pre-information society, where communities lived in relative isolation, the other is seen as a threat or considered funny because you don’t understand their customs and language,” says Banerjee. So the ‘idli-dosa’ eating Tamilian is a creation of Hindi-speaking people just like the ‘oye oye’ Sardarji of south Indians. Tamil movies have stock Hindi-speaking characters who are mostly aggressive moneylender marwaris. “Those characters have now come down as they are not relevant,” says Mohan Raman. In fact, one of the first mainstream Hindi movies to break the Madrasi stereotype was K Balachander’s ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye‘ (1981). “Kamal Haasan sir nailed it when he says ‘Hinthi’ and not Hindi. It is very realistic,” says Kartik Krishnan, assistant director and writer in Bollywood, a Tamilian from Delhi.

The exceptions that film-lovers like Krishnan cheer on include ‘Dil Se’ (1998), ‘Company’ (2002), ‘Mr and Mrs Iyer’ (2002), ‘Yuva’ (2004) and ‘Shanghai’ (2012). “When I first heard Mohanlal talk with a Mallu accent in ‘Company’, I cringed. But despite the slightly irritating delivery, his performance grew on me,” he says. Barring a few, most of the realistic portrayals have come in movies directed by south Indians, be it Mani Ratnam or Ram Gopal Varma. But you don’t necessarily need south Indians to put an end to such ethnic stereotypes. Sachin Kundalkar, who is debuting in Bollywood with ‘Aiyyaa’ says south Indian men are hot. “I am a pucca Maharashtrian. I have seen women around me admiringly looking at south Indian men for their humbleness and intellectual aura. That is what my film is about,” he say”

  • Know The Seeds of Pumpkin without Breaking, Tamil

I had blogged on the antiquity of the Tamil Language , its rich culture and its scientific approach every thing.

Tamil Land was demarcated into six zones and relevant details were assigned to each of them, which is not found in any other Literature.

Also the Tamil Land was the one that contained all the six divisions of Land.

Tamil’s ancient and authoritative Grammatical Works, Agathiyam, Tolkappiyam mention  advanced mathematics formulae.

One other Sangam period work’ கணக்கதிகாரம்” by Kari Nayanar of  Korkkiyaar abounds in Mathematical Formulae.

One such is the Calculation for finding the number of seeds in a Pumpkin.

    “கீற்றெண்ணி முத்தித்துத் கீழாறினால் மாறி

    வேற்றையஞ்சு தன்னில் மிகப்பெருக்கிப் பார்த்ததிலே

    பாதி தள்ளி மூன்றிற் பகிர விதையாகும்
    பூசணிக்காய் தோறும் புகல்”
Count the number of Slices visible in the Pumpkin
    Multiply it by 3, 6 and 5.
    Divide the result by 2
    Multiply this result by 3.
This is the number of seeds per Slice.
For the number of seeds multiply this by the number of slices visible in the Pumpkin.

  • The Boat People, SrI Lankan Tamils, Smugglers’ Side Video

    The Boat Peple

Click the above Link for Video.

The much touted Resettlement of The Tamils is  so good that the people of Tamil origin in Sri Lanka are leaving the shores for Australia

    .

Tim Noonan, Channel Seven has produced a Documentary that deals with The Tamil Boat people who flee to Australia.

The Documentary focusses on the Smugglers who transport the people.

From the tone and tenor of the smugglers , I have a suspicion whether the Sri Lankan Intelligence Agencies could have  had a hand in this, considering that the Naval Boats seemed to have advance information on the boats.

The interview with the Smuggler on the plight of the Tamils makes one wonder if the whole process is a disinformation Campaign.

    One thing is clear.

Neither the Sri Lankan Government nor the Sinhala people want the Tamils in Sri Lanka,

Forcible Union of these two will only fester the would and it would be an Asian Irish Problem.

    Story:

The video documentary is to be commended for highlighting the economic imperatives that are presently inspiring Sri Lankans, (inclusive, in my interpellation, of Sinhalese and Muslims who take illegal routes to get abroad, often nowadays through air and land journeys with false documents).v The focus in the documentary is on Tamils and it is indicated that most of the aspirant asylum-seekers are males. One English-speaking Tamil tells Noonan that he was “chasing a better life in Australia.” Thereafter, an unnamed Tamil welder, a married man with a 7-year old daughter, who presently earns the equivalent of 200 dollars per month explains to Noonanvi why he has already invested money with a people smuggler towards such a trip and what risks he was prepared to face. He is confident he will get to Australia. His face is not hidden and the video scenes as well as his commentary (in translation) are as credible as striking.

Noonan tells us that the “people smugglers” are “making millions, but offer no guarantee of reaching Australia and no refunds if you don’t make it.” Referring to them as “ruthless people,” he introduces the audience to a people-smuggler in a balaclava, who spoke in Sinhala and clarified his manipulations in response to questions.vii There is every possibility that Noonan was taken for a ride on this occasion. The authenticity of the commentary from this person must be sceptically viewed, with the evidence kept on hold (air traffic metaphor) for the moment.

In contrast the Tamil welder’s testimony is consolidated by the evidence of an English-speaking Tamil introduced as “Spencer.” Spencer was – and IS – a breadth of fresh air. He had been arrested among a boatload that had taken off from “the west coast” [probably Negombo or thereabouts] and Noonan’s interview was with official permission in some jail. His straight-talking opinions will be a shock to the gullible Aussie human rights advocates and the general readership who have swallowed the tale that Tamils in Sri Lanka today in 2011/12 – whatever the story in the past — are fleeing from persecution. Let me introduce some extracts verbatim or in summary paraphrase.

    • In response to the question why he was prepared to work through “people-smugglers,” Spencer said: “the thing is there is no other way. We must get their help.”
    • And why did he venture thus: “to make money; to live a luxurious life,” said Spencer

  • Sri Lankan Army Harass Tamil Children with ‘chits. Co Existence Possible?

Not content with the Genocide of the Tamils in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan Government , through its army is engaged in harassing school girls by the army personnel asking them to call them on Cell phones by giving the children a ‘chit’ to write their cell Phone numbers.

    Danger-keep out sign
Danger-keep out sign (Photo credit: kewl)

Some girls were found missing and no action seems to have been taken by the authorities,

There are also reports that the Government has moved Tamils from the human Rights care to Army Detention Camp.

Mahinda Rajapakshe seems to be working out a plan.

First came the acquisition of Tamils lands, then the settlement of Sinhalese in the Tamil areas.

One of the major complaints against the Government during the period pf ‘war’ was that the army was given special directive to rape Tamil Women, thus ensuring th Sinhala domination.

    May sound preposterous.

I have been under the impression that only the Sri Lankan Government is behaving this way and the normal Sinhalese are fair.

To my shock , I found Sinhalese spewing venom at the Tamils in a totally unrelated News item in the Times of India dt 22/8/2012 on SriLanka having allowed China to purchase a property in Colombo .( India of course was upset about and did nothing about it, except crying).

Of the 100o and odd comments nearly 50-60 were totally irrelevant and abusive of the Tamils.

Given the fact that the government and the people of Sinhala are against the Tamils , I am coming around to the view that co existence with the Sinhalese is out of question.

    Story:

( August 24, 2012, Vavuniya, Sri Lanka Guardian) According to news reaching from the former LTTE hideout in and around the north-east Pudukudiyiruppu, Vanni, military men engaged in non-combating patrols are heavily engaged in harassing the Tamil school girls.

Military men on their rounds in vehicles and road patrols are targeting Tamil school girls attending evening private tuition classes. They are seen forcing chits to the girls. The girls in fear are accepting the chits fearing of consequences if they do not accept them from the gun wielding army personnel. The chits confirms the cell phone numbers and the military men are said to be asking the girls to phone them.
The girls have complained to the parents that the army in duty are approaching them and are unnecessarily engaging in chats and making explicit gestures. The patents according to reports published in the Tamil media are said to concerned for the safety of their children and are struggling to deal with the difficulties faced.
News reaching from Jaffna and reported in the Tamil media confirms that the military intelligence unit is strengthening its operations in the north. In particular in the Vadamarachchi area, suspicious and anonymous men are on the move with the help of the gun carrying Tamil men who are roaming around during nights.
Last night (22/8) gun carrying persons in civilian dress has raided a house in Karaveddi. They created mayhem even to the extent of searching the deep wells around. Whilst the civil contingent was in action, the military men in uniform are seen giving cover to the civil dressed operatives. The roads around the house was blocked and the surrounding houses were extensively searched.
According to a resident, the house targeted is the residence of two elderly couple. The raid was undertaken to find intelligence information of arms hidden in there. The intelligence men had visited the house again next day and have undertaken further search.
The photographs taken of the raid confirms that the military intelligence men in civilian dress are mostly former LTTE fighters. They are confirmed to be accompanied by military men and women soldiers.
