More Sinister Than Al-Qaeda? New Terrorist Outfit.

If the network is really apolitiacl in nature and interested in serving the Society, why the secrecy?

Worth serious investigation.

Turkey‘s Gulen movement, which promotes service to the common good, may have grown into the world’s biggest Muslim network. Is it the modern face of Islam, or are there more sinister undercurrents?

From Kenya to Kazakhstan, a new Islamic network is attracting millions of followers – and billions of dollars.

Inspired by a little-known Turkish imam, the Gulen movement is linked to more than 1,000 schools in 130 countries as well as think tanks, newspapers, TV and radio stations, universities – and even a bank.

This massive network is unlike anything else. It has no formal structure, no visible organisation and no official membership.

A senior Turkish prosecutor says an investigation into the leader of the country’s most influential religious sects is being extended after allegations in the media that he has been plotting to overthrow the state.

Over the last few days, Turkish television channels have been broadcasting recordings of alleged comments by Fethullah Gulen, leader of the Nur or Divine Rights sect, in which he urges his followers in the judiciary and public service to work patiently to take control of the state.

Mr Gulen has dismissed the allegations as a plot.

The Nur sect is enormously wealthy and runs schools and universities in Turkey, Central Asia and the Middle East. The BBC Ankara correspondent says many people regard Mr Gulen as a moderate figure but influential sections of Turkey’s secular establishment are suspicious of a man who wields considerable power.

Publishers in Turkey are often in court, but for the first time the authorities have censored a book that is not even finished. On 24 March police launched a series of raids on newspapers, publishers and even cells at Silivri prison in an attempt to pick up drafts of The Army of the Imam, a book the investigative journalist Ahmet Sik had nearly finished when he was taken into custody in early March.
