Dos And Don’ts Hinduism.

Though there are lots of Rules on Behaviour , a short list is prescribed  by Patanjali in his, Yoga Sutras.

Hindu law.
Ancient Indian law.

These rules re classified under two categories.

One is what to do and another what not to do.

Things what one is not to do.

1.Inflicting Pain on any living being.(Ahimsa)

2.Not speaking Untruth.(Sathyam)

One may notice here that speaking Truth is not classified under things to do or as a Positive concept.

The reason is that by refraining rom speaking Untruth amounts to speaking  Truth.

Sometimes keeping quiet when forced to speak untruth amounts to speaking Truth.

3.Stealing.(Astheyam)

4.Keeping away from promiscuousness,by Mind, Speech and Body.(Brahmacharya)

this is called Brahmacharya.

Contrary to popular notion Brahmacharya    is not denying only Sex.

It denotes regulating behaviour, without excesses, not limited to Sex.

Naishtika Brahmachari means total abstinence from Sex.

5.Acquiring things other than what is required to maintain Health.(Aparigraha).

These are called Yama.

Things one must do.

Niyama.

1.Saucham-remaining clean both mentally and physically.

2.Santhosam-remaining happy in all the states, During happiness and sadness.

3.Thavam,Following the Vrats like Ekadasi

4.Swadhyayam.Learning the Holy Books.

Though Swadhyayamm refers to the Learning of the Vedas,, the interpretation is that learning Books that teach Morals.

5.Iswarapranidhana.

dedicating everything to God, including the desire to attain God’s feet.
