A diet rich in soy and whey protein, found in products such as soy milk and low-fat yogurt, has been shown to reduce breast cancer incidence in rats. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Latest Studies by Nature have shown that Dieting and Low Calorie intake does not extend Longevity nor are they a factor in improving general Health.

Recent tests conducted on Monkeys have revealed this fact , indicating while there might be resistance to some diseases like cancer by following CR  and in some cases even this feature was missing.

I may also add that despite increased talk of general improvement  to Health by Exercises and Walking(generally an hour a day), I am yet to find a solid case that these things have helped in improving general Health.

Many a Doctor seem to be suggesting  the ‘Walk’ as a general prescription.

    Let me quote an example.

About a couple of years back, I was becoming breathless after a walk of about ten to fifteen minutes.

I had a Master check up in Manipal Hospital,Bangalore.

There was an increase in LDL

(I had a heart attack about seven years earlier and had a check up at Vijaya Hospital,Chennai and was prescribed cholesterol  controlling drug/s. I was using them for about two years and after another routine check up I found there was again an increase, hence I dropped these medication)

The Doctor at Manipal discussed the condition with me and advised me not to stop the drugs prescribed and continue with additional drugs:he also told me to take a Walk ‘ for at least an hour a Day.

My discussion with the Doctor went some thing like this.

‘Doctor, do you remember why I came to consult you?

‘Yes, You have a Heart problem

‘Sorry, I came because  I had difficulty to in walking for more than fifteen minutes at a stretch- that I have a heart problem was diagnosed  by you. If I could not walk for fifteen minutes how can I walk for an hour?

‘You got me wrong, You walk for till you become breathless, take rest and then walk and repeat the process. The body will tell you when to stop’

‘My body has already told me  to stop after fifteen minutes.Do you think it has to remind me till I drop?

    He laughed.

    I continued.

‘ As to the drugs, my levels have increased despite taking these Drug, so..”

The Doctor was about to disrupt me. I continued.

‘ Wait, I am aware what you are about to say-that my diet has changed and I have stress. unfortunately I continue eating the same Thayir Saatham , Paruppu and Traditional South Indian Food and as to Stress  , when compared to my earlier days I have less stress , sot  there seems to be no logic in the recommendation , though it may be medical y correct for you. The long and short of it is that this Machine is getting old and it is showing up.better leave it to its ways than to tinker and invite trouble’

He replied’ Uncle, I wish I had patients like you, I have my father, who is 75 and he keeps on fussing about his heart.

” If he has a  son who is a Doctor, he is likely to be so ‘

He advised me to take care and I am continuing with out drugs or Walks(that is as a regimen ‘if I have to go out on an errand , I Will.

(As to the question why I went to a Doctor if my views are like these, well, it was because my children can afford costly Medicare and they get upset if I do not go)

Coming to the Topic on hand, it is my view that all forced behaviour like walking exercises do not increase your longevity nor do they prevent diseases.

Leave the Machine be and avoid vices.

Take moderate food ,and walk when you feel.

    Story:

Longevity differences aside, the two studies found remarkably similar health benefits of CR monkeys. Both found that monkeys on CR diets were less likely to develop tumors, showed reduced evidence of cardiovascular disease, and had better blood sugar control. Both studies have also found evidence that calorie restriction slows brain aging. The Wisconsin researchers found that age-related brain atrophy is lessened in CR monkeys, while the NIA group previously published that a CR regimen helps prevent symptoms of Parkinson’s disease in macaques.

“I love fact that in a lot of ways what we say really is the same,” said Ricki Colman, first author on the Wisconsin group’s 2009 paper. Colman pointed out that although CR-promoted longevity may get the most attention, possible health benefits are more important. “The point is not to live forever, but live a healthier life,” he said. “That’s what most people are after.”

In the NIA project, however, the researches divided the monkeys into “young-onset” CR macaques, who started caloric restriction between 1 and 14 years old, and “old-onset” CR monkeys, who started CR between 16 and 23 years of age, and found that health benefits depended on the sex and age of CR enrollment. Old-onset male monkeys had lower triglycerides and cholesterol, while young-onset CR monkeys did not show these benefits. When the NIA team looked at cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and cardiovascular disease together, they found no differences between old-onset monkeys and controls; only young-onset CR monkeys seemed to benefit, falling ill later in their lives.

For now, both primate studies will continue, and researchers at NIA and the University of Wisconsin are beginning to collaborate to understand which variables, like diet composition and genetics, are most important in determining CR’s health effects.

Much aging research has “ignored health and focused on longevity,” said Steven Austad of the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, who wrote the Nature commentary on the study but was not involved in the research. The NIA “monkeys got less diabetes and cancer, yet didn’t translate this didn’t translate to longer life,” he said, suggesting that these two effects can—and should—be separated.

  • Indians Find Cholesterol By The Photo of The Back of the Hand

    Cholesterol is Good for You!
Cholesterol is Good for You! (Photo credit: Mr Jaded)

An Indian Research Team Has developed a new process by which the Cholesterol  level can be found.

This is from The  Sree Sastha Institute of Engineering  and Technology ,Thanjavur,Tamil Nadu

    Story:

Researchers in India have developed a total cholesterol test that uses a digital camera to take a snapshot of the back of the patient‘s hand rather than a blood sample. The image obtained is cropped and compared with images in a database for known cholesterol levels.

Writing in the International Journal of Medical Engineering and Informatics, N.R. Shanker of the Sree Sastha Institute of Engineering and Technology and colleagues describe how they have developed a non-invasive way to test cholesterol levels in patients at increased risk of heart disease. Their approach is based on the creation of a large database of cholesterol levels recorded using standard blood tests and linked to a standardized photograph of the hand for each patient; cholesterol is concentrated in the creases of one’s fingers. They developed an image-processing computer program that compares the image from a new patient with the thousands of entries in the database and matches it to a specific cholesterol reading.

Measuring the amount and type of cholesterol circulating in the blood is an important risk factor in cardiovascular disease. Excess cholesterol not used by the body in making hormones and building cells is laid down on the inner wall of arteries as a waxy plaque, which can reduce the normal flow of blood potentially causing heart problems and increasing the risk of cerebral stroke. Total cholesterol is a useful early indicator, although more detailed testing that distinguishes between the HDL high-density lipoprotein) and LDL (low-density lipoprotein) and triglycerides are needed for a more accurate health assessment of patients found to have high total cholesterol. It is LDL, so-called “bad” cholesterol that contributes to the formation of arterial plaques, atherosclerosis. The presence of different total levels of cholesterol can be revealed through image analysis of the skin.

A non-invasive and inexpensive method for cholesterol screening would allow this risk factor be determined in much larger patient populations without the need for costly and inconvenient blood tests. The team will also soon publish details of the extension of this work to classifying cholesterol type using their approach.

  • Coffee Slows Down the onset of Death, Study.

Association of Coffee Drinking with Total and Cause-Specific Mortality has conducted a Study and patterns of Habits and impact on Life has come out with the conclusion on Coffee Drinking…..

In this large prospective study, coffee consumption was inversely associated with total and cause-specific mortality. Whether this was a causal or associational finding cannot be determined from our data. (Funded by the Intramural Research Program of the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics.)

However, coffee drinkers were also more likely to smoke, and, after adjustment for tobacco-smoking status and other potential confounders, there was a significant inverse association between coffee consumption and mortality

    http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1112010?query=featured_home&&&&

I think this means Coffee drinking  and Mortality can not be linked in an adverse way.

By ‘inverse association’ they seem to mean that Coffee Drinking slows down the onset of Death.

    Is my understanding correct?

Why can’t these people write English?

Are they saying that they do not know any thing definite, couched in an arcane prose, after all these studies, to justify the grants they receive?

Now I am none the wiser.

  • Tibetan Medicine for Stroke/Paralysis.Addresses

Recently a relative of mine’ who is eighty, had a stroke.

He had been feeling giddy and been falling down unconscious quite regularly.

Scan and MRI had confirmed mild brain stroke and Thrombosis was indicated.

Also there were indications of heart attack.

Allopathic Medicines were prescribed and there was no improvement.

One of our friends suggested Tibetan medicine .

We never heard of the system.

As there was no improvement in the patient , we decided to give it a try as we had nothing to lose.

The treatment, as described was given and one dose was taken and there is marked improvement he no longer falls down and becomes unconscious and there is better co-ordination of limbs and he is able to walk on hs own.

It odes not matter how or why, but the treatment has improved his condition.

    Why don’t people try this?

Please remember that Indian legends and History records Buddhist and Jain Monks  were  among the best physicians for treatment of diseases and as an aside, it is one of their methods to proselytize the Hindus.

“Tibetan Medicine Pearl 70 (70 Flavors Pearl Pill, Qishiwei Zhenzhu Wan) is based on the classical prescription of Pearl 25, which initially was recorded in “Four Tandara”, a monumental Tibetan medical text in the 8th Century.

Pearl 70 (or Pearl 25) has significant clinic effects to treat stroke, paralysis (such as facial paralysis), hemiplegia, epilepsy, cardiovascular / heart diseases, hypertension brain concussion, cerebral disorders, such as cerebral arteriosclerosis, cerebral thrombosis, myocardial infarction and other cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, limb numbness, spasm stiffness, opisthotonus and other neurological symptoms.

According to Tibetan medical texts, Pearl 70 can treat “Black Pulse Syndrome” and “White Pulse Syndrome”:

Black Pulse Syndrome: cardiovascular system disorder, including heart diseases, hypertension, stroke, brain concussion.

White Pulse Syndrome: neural system disorder or pathologic damage, including hemiplegia, paralysis, epilepsy etc.

The ingredients of Pearl 70: pearl, saffron, sandalwood, dalbergia, cloves, emblica officinalis, strawberries, codonopsis, licorice, bezoar, musk, and other herbs.

Dosage: For emergency, take one pill immediately. For chronic disorders, soak one pill in water, and consume it the next early morning, one pill every 3-7 days.

  • 7 Ways Alcohol is Good,Unsupported and Dangerous

If one goes through the article carefully , not a single reference to medical study has been provided.

    Cholesterol emboli
Cholesterol emboli (Photo credit: Boonyarit Cheunsuchon)

Looks as though some one has written this just to be different so that he can be noticed.

To the best of my knowledge Medical professionals speak nothing about these ‘good effect of alcohol’

On cholesterol. now there is evidence that cholesterol has nothing to do with Heart ailment.

The saturated fat found mainly in meat and dairy products has been regularly vilified by health professionals and the media, but a new analysis of published studies finds no clear link between people’s intake of saturated fat and their risk of developing heart disease. In the new analysis in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition January 13, 2010, which combined the results of 21 previous studies, researchers found no clear evidence that higher saturated fat intakes led to higher risks of heart disease or stroke.

Those who are regular readers of this website over the last few years are well aware of my long standing opinion that saturated fats and cholesterol are not the cause of heart disease and this most recent analysis of the scientific literature has validated this opinion.

The demonization of saturated fat began in 1953 with Dr. Ancel Keys’ publication of a paper comparing fat intake and heart disease mortality, and the misguided ousting of saturated fat has continued ever since.

The idea that saturated fat is bad for your heart became so ingrained in the medical and health community, anyone daring enough to question this dogma was automatically viewed as a quack, regardless of the evidence presented.

Instead, trans fats became all the rage and have since saturated the market. But times are a-changing, and in many ways for the better. Medical scientists have finally begun to take a hard look at the link between saturated fats and heart disease – only to find that there is none.

Fiber in take facilitates bowel movement.

Check with any Drinker,, he will tell you drinking makes bowel movements not easy.

As to Neurological conditions, intake of Alcohol is contra indicated with medicine.

In fact the main complaint against Drinking is that it attacks the Brain and the nervous system to make you tipsy.

As to Cancer, growth of Cancer affects the Liver and degenerates it, an Organ that regenerates itself.

Oncologists advise you to stop Alcohol for any type of Cancer.

“Good cholesterol. Beer and wine can both increase HDL cholesterol (the good kind). Going along with this, it can also help to prevent excess plaque build-up in your arteries. This can prevent hardening and clogging of said blood vessels (atherosclerosis), which relates back to point number one. We’ll drink to that. Just be wary of the empty calories that are in beer, especially darker brews. The lighter stuff won’t be so unkind to your midsection.

Arthritis. Alcohol can considerably lessen your chance of getting arthritis when you become old and wrinkly. However, booze is said to increase your risk of developing osteoporosis. So while a glass of wine might prevent your bones from getting persistently achy, it can make them more prone to snapping like twigs. It’s a fine line to walk, but you know what might help? White Russians. There’s milk and alcohol, together, and that means you can help your bones in two ways. It’s genius!

Fiber. Being derived from grains, beer is actually an alright source of fiber. In fact, 500 milliliters (a little less than two cups) of beer can provide over a quarter of your necessary daily intake of fiber. Of course, too much fiber may lead to toilet trouble. Well, maybe not trouble, but at the very least it can lead to a lot of wasted toilet paper. You don’t want to blow your beer budget on TP.

Certain cancers. Yup, even the threat of relapse and death from certain cancers can be reduced with a few swills of wine. Specifically, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and kidney cancer are said to be positively affected by-and maybe even prevented by-a little of the red. If it means you can avoid the difficulty and hardship of chemotherapy, why wouldn’t you down the occasional glass of Cabernet?

Neurological conditions. According to a few studies, partaking in a little alcohol once in a while may help keep Uncle Alzheimer and strokes at bay. The proteins in the myelin sheaths that help guard the neurological pathways in the nervous system respond positively to the alcohol. Of course, too much alcohol has been linked to the death of brain cells, so once again, moderation is the key here.

Life saving. Well, it may only be able to save you in one very particular way. Should you happen to ingest antifreeze for whatever reason, marathon-chugging vodka or whiskey could honestly save your life. The alcohol works by cancelling out the dangerous effects of ethylene glycol, the main component in antifreeze. Seriously!

As a final note, these do not apply to former alcoholics. If you used to throw back entire bottles of whiskey every night for years and have since sobered up, there’s no way falling off the wagon is going to help you more than staying steadfastly on it. Stay strong!
