In this post I am  reproducing some videos where Periyava speaks on .Dowry’ the evil practice of accepting money from the Bride’s parents.

According to Sastras, in the earlier days, the  bridegrooms paid money .

‘Vara Dakshinai’ in Sanskrit, which originally meant ‘that which is paid by the Vara(bride groom’ was later misinterpreted as ‘ the one paid by the  Girl’!

Periyava explains this concept and condemns this practice with authority in his inimitable earthy style devoid of jargons.

Watch.

Periyava kural – Jan 8th 2013

Excerpts from Deivathin Kural by Kanchi Periyavar( compiled  by Ra.Ganapathy is being published here with the permission of The Kanchi Mutt.

Respected Sir, I am yet to fully accept the compassion of a person who has prejudices against men and especially widowed women who come for aashirvad. After all they are already bereaved and need solace and aashirvad. What they get is third rate treatment. Why?Whereas I know of a number of widows who do not follow the rules of the game and come for his aashirvad with sindoor and flowers. They get his aashirvad because he does not know! First of all society makes the rules for a bereaved widow stripping her of her thaali, anklets, bangles, sindoor, flowers, coloured clothes and terms her a bad-omen forever. Is this our Hindu Dharma? You could have continued with The Sati instead of subjecting her to such indignities wherever she goes.
    Why?
In fact I do not understand the logic of giving darhan to any woman who sports a sindoor, flowers and colored saris,Whoever she may be,whereas someone without these is not looked at.
I am waiting for your answer sir.

There are certain Sampradyas being followed by tradition.
If some one does not like this, they can just ignore those who practice it,
I am sure Adi Shankaracharya had not suggested this for He was the one who sang Manisha Panchakam.
I do agree that people with money and power get priority over even Sampradaya.
      And this is abhorrent.
Hinduism has not advocated group worship or insitutionalised religion probably for the fallibilities of Human beings will affect the efforts in realizing self.
A non sequitar, why this fixation on widows for If I recall there seems to be more comments only on this aspect of Hinduism?
