When and How to Name A Child?

Naming a newly born child is given priority in Hinduism.It is one of the most important of the Basic 40 Duties-Samskaras.

Who and When?

All Varnas(loosely called as Caste now)-for explanation of this concept please read my blog ‘Caste’ ,filed under Hinduism.-20th Day from the date of Birth of The Child.

Sudras-21st Day.

Vaisyas-16h Day.

Kshatriyas-12th Day

Brahmins-10th Day.

In addition to this the,Namakarana or Naming ceremony may be performed on the following Nakshatras(Days on which the Stars are indicated).

Aswini,Rohini,Mrigasira,Punarvasu,Pushya(Poosam),

Makam,Uthiram,Hastham,Chithirai,Swathi,Anusham,Moolam,Uthiradam,

Thirunonam,Avittam,Sadayam,Uthirattathi and Revathi.

The First Letter of the name to begin with.

Aswini-su,che cho,laa.

Barani-vi,loo,le,low.

Kaarthgai-a,e,oo,ea.

Rohini-o,va,vi,voo.

Mrigasira-ve,vo,ka,ki.

Thiruvaadirai-ku, ka,nga,chcha.

Punarvasu-ke,ko,ha,hi

Poosam-he,hee,ho,da.

Ayilyam-ti,to,de,doo.

Makam-ma,mi,mu,mea.

Pooram-mo,ta,ti,to

Uthiram-te,to,pppa,Bi.

Hastam-pu,ksha,nna,tta.

Chithirai-pe,bo,ra.ri.

Swathi-ru,Re,Row,ttha.

Visakam-thee.,thu,they,ththo.

Anusham-na,ne,noo,nea.

Kettai-no,ya,yi,you.

Moolam-ye,yo,ppha,phi.

It is customary to name the first-born the name of the Family deity,the Second the name of the Father’s Father or Mother.

The above guidelines are recommended.

Nick name may be anything so long as it does not contain any inauspicious words.

Dear Ramani Sir,
You mentioned about varnaas.. are defined by birth or by karma. or by work. Is there any brahmin existing today as nobody protects dharma neither they preach nor they make attempt to know the brahman. Then nobody is supposed to name the kids on 10th day as per your theory. Can you justify your blog sir?

  Technically speaking as sanctioned by the Vedas, I do not know that there are people who have realized Brahman.
  That does not mean that there is none.
  I am not aware of them for such people do not advertise themselves.
  As far as I am concerned that the last two known souls were Ramana Maharishi and Kanchi Peiyavar.
  Your comment on Brahmins naming. ceremony.
  True that most of the Brahmins of today do not follow the Vedas.
  But still there are people who follow the tradition.
  Those among whom who do not follow the Vedas strictly ,follow at least some of the duties enjoined by the Vedas., like the naming ceremony.
  This has be welcomed.
  The fact that Brahmins do not really preach or practice is due to the economic necessities of the modern Life where one has to make a Living.
  When Varasarama Dharma was in full flow, say during the Ancient Tamil Kings( to quote the Latest) Brahmins were fully operational.
  The Society comprising of the other Varnas took care of their needs and as such Brahmins did not have to really worry about their food.
  They were able to pray for the welfare of the Society, asking for nothing in return.
  So the present sorry state of affairs is due to Brahmins not following the Vedas even in the midst of adversity and the Society not taking care of them.
  Even to day I see people becoming stingy when offering Dakshina to Brahmins, who are carrying the torch of Vedic Rites, while one spends recklessly on Films and entertainment.
  Unless one encourages the practicing of the Vedas, the present stsaus quo shall will persist.
  Varnasrama Dharma is because it is in some form, only name has changed.
  Please read ‘Customs and Manners of the Hindu speaking people’ in Google books and a peep to Caste system in my blog filed under Hinduism.
  One will know how scientific the system is.
  Truth needs no justification whether I agree with it or not.
