Untouchability Reservations Gandhi’s Muddle

While there has been confusion reigning in on the subject of social divisions,Gandhi, in his own  self-styled avatar of one who can and should comment and contribute to any or all social and religious issues, whether it makes sense or not, muddled the waters by calling a group as ‘Harijans‘.

Harijan (Hindustani: हरिजन (Devanagari), ہریجن (Nastaleeq)translation: “child of God”) was a term used by Mohandas Gandhi for Dalits. Gandhi said it was wrong to call people “untouchable”, and called them Harijans, which means children of God. It is still in wide use especially in Gandhi’s home state ofGujarat.(wiki)

As things stood they were confusing; Gandhi added to it by giving a new name Harijan, Child of God as if there were not enough names!

What exactly happened is that people increased their vocabulary for a non-existent class.

So the terms that are used denote specifically anything and has become a tool in the hands of Politicians to garner votes.

Child of Hari(Vishnu) -God.

There is also a confusion about the terms Untouchability ,Reservations and SC ST..

These Terms are used sa if they are  interchangeable.

We have seen , to an extent what Untouchability is or is not.

More points on this to follow. on this later,

What is Reservation?

Reservation in India is a form of affirmative action designed to improve the well-being of backward and under-represented communities defined primarily by their ‘caste‘ (quota-system based on ‘gender‘ or ‘religion‘). These are laws (both Constitutional and statutory) or merely local rules/regulations/practices (not derived from any Act passed by the Parliament or State-Legislature) wherein a certain percentage of total available vacancies in educational institutes and government jobs are set aside for people from backward communities and others.Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) are the primary beneficiaries of the reservation policies under the Constitution — with the object of ensuring a level playing field.(wiki)

That is on a Non existent concept the whole system was devised.

There is no clear concept of the yard stick to apply to determine which constitute a SC .

As a result whoever can gather muscle strength and crowd can demand inclusion in the Reservation quota.

An depending on the exigencies of  Political climate the parties as VP Singh did by The Mandal Commission.

If there has been a genuine concern for the downtrodden, the yard stick of Economic status would have been fixed.

That was not to be, because Politicians would never have had a chance to polarize the polity to garner Votes if they had fixed economic criteria as the factor for extending benefits.

In Life there is no equalizer greater than Money.

If you are rich or occupy an important position, people flock to you, no body cares about your roots.

This Law is applicable everywhere.

Prime example are  those who have become rich or have come to occupy important posts or both after having come up through reservation Quota.

I  Have heard of them speak derisively of people who hail from their own community !

Had Economic status been the criteria, there would have been no confusion in determining who is to be classified as ST.Now after 60 years those who are poor remain poor continue to be so and suffer social ostracism because of this.

Their brethren who had been fortunate in climbing up do not even consider the for marriage Alliances.

ST SC are names designated  to earmark certain groups to get the benefit of the Reservation Policy.

Let not people misuse these or interchange the terms.

Now having muddled up this far, let’s see how Ambedkar raised passions further by inventing reasons or the yard stick for determining Caste.

More to Follow.

Quotes are from wiki.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reservation_in_India

Note that this is not a definition, but a description being used currently after the acquisition of India by the British.

Till the Mogul period the usage was Sudra, denoting a group of people engaged in Physical work, with certain Dispositions.tendencies.

It was a tag used to denote this group and was often used colloquially to indicate one of uncouth practices, nothing more as is when we say’ he works like a Donkey’

The meaning varies ‘ depending on the context.

It may denote mindless application in carrying out a task or plain stupidity or to indicate their profession.”

    Namaste Ramani,

You have dealt the subject in a condensed manner.

As the subject that is been dealt has plagued the nation beyond any scope to repair, following criticisms can either be addressed as a separate thread or as an amendment.

Present reservation system has been effective in some ways. Those details are missing in my observation. Had it been added, it would have given an completeness and unbiased approach to the article. Generally wiki information are not treated as authentic. It could have been avoided. M K Gandhi is a great man, at least the world believes so 🙂 If we are contesting his ideals we need to add more info on the ill effects of his *idiocy*.

Also there is a hue and cry that We Bhaarathvasis blame everything else but fail to look inwards. How long we continue to say that Moguls and British did all these to us? Answering this or trying to answer will clarify why I have used term idiocy

      Yes.
As I said in the post, the subject will have a series of articles, in which I shall attempt to address the issues raised by you.
There will be expansion of certain remarks I have made in the passing, like the one on Gandhi, the present Reservation being inadequate to address the real issue…
MK Gandhi, no doubt,is a Great Man.
However it does not make him great to comment on things he is unsure of, with Populism in mind(Yes, Populism, I will substantiate this in the posts to follow)
We have some Holy Cows, or Gods in Indian Polity, like Gandhi, Nehru,Ambedkar,Annadurai , MGR about whom no criticism is to be leveled even if justified.
I belong to the minority which does not think so.

        Namaste Ramanan,

[I belong to the minority which does not think so.]
Fortunately the minority is not only growing but also makings its presence felt. Its all because of the goodness of the emerging micro blogging sites.

Few names you listed remind me the regional nationalism spearheaded by opportunists. Generally I distance myself from regional nationalism and its cheerleaders. Also It would require a separate thread to highlight their share of contribution to this muddle 🙂

Hope comments would help you so that the minority is heard decisively. May be you would ask me why not I write my own stuff instead of influencing other bloggers, my present commitments do not permit me to do so.

        Thanks for your inputs.
Happy that minority is increasingly heard.
Responses for the post from the younger generation is truly heartening which shows the head is where it ought to., especially from Indibloggers.
As to the Regional satraps, I have some posts on the Dravidian Movement under Tamils and in my opinion they are neither nationalistic nor loyal to their Regions.
Their ambition is to loot the people , using language and Caste as tools.
Your comments suggest some good ideas for posts.
They will be posted shortly, along with some series I am doing now, like Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra commentary,Caste etc.
        Might take some time.
But they would be posted despite anticipated criticisms.
        Regds,
