Veda Reference to Tamils Dravida Dakshinapada Bilingual English Hindi

I have mentioned in various articles that the Dravididas,Tamils were mentioned in the Vedas,Puranas,Ramayana and Mahabharata.

These remarks were made in the passing, assuming that further explanation was not necessary.

    This was remiss of me.

I assumed that Indians, educated included are aware of these references.

Thanks to western education and doctored History of India, where everything  worthwhile in India was/is being dated only after the birth of Christ, despite overwhelming archeological evidence and foreign literary works.

I have also written that Poompuhar, excavated sometime back,is dated around 30,000 years ago and the Period literature Silappadikaram mentions Vedas.

And there is a million year old archeological site in Chennai ,India that had an advanced Tamil civilisation.

The earliest Tamil grammatical work of Tamil mentions Vedas and its author Tholkaapiyar declares himself to be a Brahmin well versed in the Vedas.

And I have written many articles on this subject of the intimate relationship between Sanatana Dharma and Tamil/s.

However there have been quite a few mails asking me to produce evidence of Tamil being mentioned in Early Sanskrit Texts.

The term Tamil is used to mention the language spoken by the people in South India in ancient India and is being spoken even today.

The term Tamils is used to refer to people speaking the language.

    This is a linguistic identity.

One must remember that identifying people of India by language was an European invention, most of these attempts were aimed at dividing India.

And the landmass of present India was vastly different from the present India in ancient times.

The reference to various people belonging to different regions ,by early Indians was by the name of tribes.

And also by referring to the directions where they lived in relation to Vedic,Sanatana Dharma, which was prevalent in the,Gangetic plains and Saraswathi valley.

In terms of identifying people by directions, the Vedic people referred to the people in the south of Vindhyas,it was

    Dakshinapada,the southern part.

It may be noted the term Deccan is derived from the word Dakshinapada.

This area in the south was also referred to as Dravida, meaning South.

The people of this area were called Dasyus, indicating those who did not worship the Vedic  Deity,Agni.

Because of this, people, south of Vindhya Mountains were called Dasyus, heretics to Vedic form of worship.

It is a different matter that the Dravidas followed Sanatana Dharma and I have explained this many of my articles on Tamils,Sanatana Dharma,Ramayana and Mahabharatha.

The earliest reference to Tamil/s is foundin the Rig Veda.

‘Saratpada na dakshina paravarn na ta nu me prasnayo jagrbhre,

-Rig Veda x.61.8-Vedic Index by McDonnell and Keith ,Volume I,page 337.

    The word Dakshinapada means,

‘To the place, the southward foot, where the Exiles( paravri) goes,on being expelled.

Shall write on how it came to people being expelled to south ,by whom and why.

Shall also provide evidence from the Vedas,Ramayana and Mahabharatha to Dravidas,Tamils in a series of articles.

  • Asshada Practices Husband Wife No Sanction Hinduism

In a highly personalised Religion, sometimes misconceptions creep in.

Though Hinduism insists that one has to study the Vedas, the Scripture of Hindus, people often do not do so, confused as they are with the dictum that Guru should be obeyed.

The problem is that Guru is different from Acharya, Upadhyaya.

For Details read my article Guru Acharya Upadhyaya.

Guru is one who instinctively understands your spiritual needs and guides and their instructions will never run contrary to Vedas, Sruthi.

In such cases where Gurus instructions are at variance with Vedas, Veda should be followed.

On the other hand, Upadhyayas and Acharyas do not have as nuch the authority as the Guru.

As such their instructions, if they run counter to Vedas are to be ignored.

Over a period of years people have not studied Vedas nor many know about the Smritis.

Smriti is a code of conduct which is followed over a period of Time.

Even Smritis if they run contrary to Vedas, are to ignored.

For Vaidikas, Vedas are the Sole Authority.

Many of us follow what purohit says without bothering to check either Sruthi or Smriti.

Result is that many irrelevant practices not found in Vedas , Smritis are followed.

I have been writing on some of these practices which do more harm to Hinduism than Atheists.

I have received the following query on Ashada Maasa, Adi in Tamil.

‘Dear Sir Good Morning. I have been reading your Blog since long time and the information u have been sharing is really incredible. Today, I have a question where I am not getting any exact answers ..hope u can clarify it for me.
This is Regarding the AAshada Masam as I got newly married, the customs followed during this month was implied on me as well but the questions unanswered or partially answered.

    1. Why do Mother-In Law and Daughter inlaw should not walk in the same main door or stay together.
    2. Why Husband and wife should not stay together.
    3. Incase if the girl gets conceived during the aashada maasam will there be a negative effect on the child or is there any negetive effect on the mother during delivery time or so.’

    My answer.

All these points have no sanctions by Sruthi or Smriti and hence may be ignored.

These seem to have crept in as Mores/ practices in Communities.

There is also an effort to justify the separation of couples in Aashada, arguing that if the couple were to be together and if the woman conceives in Aashada, she would deliver in Summer .

This is effort to justify something which is not needed.

The premises for the practice is hypothetical.

And Hinduism does not intrude in to private affairs unnecessarily.

And wherever it needs to intervene in personal Life it comes out clearly with no ambiguities.

So one need not try to promote Hinduism by saying things which Hinduism does not.

  • Ten Families Compiled Rig Veda Details Apri Suktha

Ten Families Compiled Rig Veda Details Apri Suktha

Vedas, the sacred texts of Hindus, were not written down ,nor are they attributed to any single author.

    Veda means ‘ to know’

These were grasped from Ether by the Realized Souls,Rishis.

So the Vedas were not composed, but compiled by different Rishis.

Of the four Vedas,Rig,Yajur,Sama and Atharva, the Rig Veda was compiled by Ten Families.

They compiled the Apri Sukthas, the Hymns used in propitiating Deities before a Yagnya.

    Details.

Of the ten Aprisuktas mentioned in Gargya Narayana’s commentary, I.13 and I.142 both invoke the Narāśaṁsa and Tanūnapāt manifestations of Agni, I.188, III.4, IX.5 and X.110 invoke only the Tanūnapāt manifestation and II.3, V.5, VII.2 and X.70 invoke only the Narāśaṁsa manifestation.

  • Answers To Doubts on Tharpana,Duty to Ancestors.

I received the the following query from a reader on Pitru Tharpana.

I have replied them in the chart below.

My information is based on Late. Sri.Anna Subrahmanya Iyer book Yajur Veda Sandhya Vandanam, available at RK Mutt book stores and at Railway stations.

    One important query .

perform tharpanam facing eastward. But some say that we must face southward. Which is correct.?

    Reply.

The procedure is to perform Madhyannika,Brahma Yagnya and then Tharpana.

Procedure for Sandhya Vandhana as per Sandhyavandana Procedure,so is for Brahma yagnya.

As to Tharpana,it is to be perfomed facing South.
