There are subgroups among Tamil Nadu Brahmins as well. I have written in detail about the subgroups. The subgroups are named on the basis of geographical location ( Vadama- those who have settled on the Northern banks of Kaveri River; on the basis of profession engaged in( Vaathima, who ,as a group were engaged in Vaidika,that is performing Vedic austerities ;or on the basis vof the number of families,as in Ashtasahasra, meaning Eight Thousand.These divisions are only for identification of groups. But all of them belong to Brahmin Group and these sub grouping should not come in the way of intermarriage among Brahmins,for that matter among Brahmins throughout the world.
I belong to Ashtasahasra clan. For quite some time I have been trying to get to the root of our clan,Asthasahasra and was unsuccessful. A lot of confusing information came my way,none of them with any firm evidence.
The first evidence of my roots came from an unexpected source Emperor Rajendra Chola Copperplates. Rajendra Chola, in fact , is as great as his father Rajaraja Chola,but not that well known. He built the Gangaikonda Chozhapuram Siva Temple,which matches The Big Temple, Brahadeeswara Temple at Thanjavur built by his father Rajaraja Chola.
Rajaraja Chola period Copperplates were found in a place called Esaanam in the present Thanjavur/ Kumbakonam region. Here mention is made of Rajendra Chola having donated lands in a village to Brahmins and it was called Jananatha Chathurvedhi Mangalam. It was called also known as Kunjaramalla Chathurvedhi Mangalam and also as Ennayiram,which means Eight Thousand. This refers to the Eight Thousand Brahmin families who were settled/had lived there. And that is Ashtasahasra clan of Tamil Nadu Brahmins.
There were three chaturvedimangalams in panaiyur.
Therefore, in the abundance of Brahmin settlements
Jananatha Chaturvedi Mangalam was called as Ennayiram( Eight Thousand) earlier.Now it is called Kunjaramalla Chaturvedi Mangalam;

கிழக்கில் எசாலம் என்ற ஊர் அமைந்துள்ளது . பிரம்மதேசம் ,
எண்ணாயிரம் , பிடாரிப்பட்டு எனப் பல புராதன ஊர்கள் எசாலம்
அருகே உள்ளன. எசாலத்தின் பழைய பெயர் எய்தார் .
எசாலம் என்ற கிராமத்தில் திருவிராமீசுவரம் என
அழைக்கப்படும் பழைய சிவன் கோயில் உள்ளது . 1987 இல் கோயில்
திருப்பணிக்காகப் பூமியைத் தோண்டியபோது எதிர்பாராத
விதமாக இராசேந்திர சோழன் வெளியிட்ட செப்பேட்டுத்
தொகுதியுடன் இருபதுக்கு மேற்பட்ட செப்புத் திருமேனிகளும்
சிவபூசைப் பொருள்களும் கண்டறியப்பட்டன. 11.8.1987 இல்
க்கண்டுபிடிப்பு நிகழ்ந்தது . தொல்லியல் துறை உடனடியாக

The Vedic College functioned with 10 teachers and 340 students 800 years ago. The college provided free boarding to students and each student received one seer (unit) of rice per day which was sufficient for their daily meals. The teachers got a daily allowance of one kalam which was equivalent to the cost of food for 16 persons per day. They were also given half kalingu gold as bonus per year. This temple was built by Raja Raja Chola and Narasimma Perumal was considered as the family deity of Rajaraja Chola. The sanctum sanctorum has the idol of Lord Paramapathavasan and consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi. The presiding deity is Lord Azhagiya Narasimmar. The temple also has a shrine for the six foot high idol of Lord Varahamurthy. Special pooja is performed in every Thiruvathirai Natchathiram day. Sadly, vandalism have dismembered the two hands of Lord Narasimmar which are made of green stone. The deity has been kept in a corner of the temple for the past 400 years. Saint Ramanuja visited this temple twice. Koorathazhwar also visited this temple. This temple contains many Tamil inscriptions on the walls and stairs. It is surrounded by three Shiva temples namely Padaleeswarar temple, Brahmmapuriswarar temple at Brahmadesam and Ramanatha Eswarar temple at Esalam. All three Shiva temples are within two kilometers. All these temples are now under the control of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)..

It was told that there were 4 Shiva Temples constructed keeping this Lakshmi Narasingar temple at the Centre. Hence this place is called as pancha sthalam. Ramanujar defeated 8000 Samanars ( Jains ) in a debate and converted them in to Vaishnavam or Ashta Sahasra Brahmins. This is the birthplace of Kalameka poet.
