  • Asshada Practices Husband Wife No Sanction Hinduism

In a highly personalised Religion, sometimes misconceptions creep in.

Though Hinduism insists that one has to study the Vedas, the Scripture of Hindus, people often do not do so, confused as they are with the dictum that Guru should be obeyed.

The problem is that Guru is different from Acharya, Upadhyaya.

For Details read my article Guru Acharya Upadhyaya.

Guru is one who instinctively understands your spiritual needs and guides and their instructions will never run contrary to Vedas, Sruthi.

In such cases where Gurus instructions are at variance with Vedas, Veda should be followed.

On the other hand, Upadhyayas and Acharyas do not have as nuch the authority as the Guru.

As such their instructions, if they run counter to Vedas are to be ignored.

Over a period of years people have not studied Vedas nor many know about the Smritis.

Smriti is a code of conduct which is followed over a period of Time.

Even Smritis if they run contrary to Vedas, are to ignored.

For Vaidikas, Vedas are the Sole Authority.

Many of us follow what purohit says without bothering to check either Sruthi or Smriti.

Result is that many irrelevant practices not found in Vedas , Smritis are followed.

I have been writing on some of these practices which do more harm to Hinduism than Atheists.

I have received the following query on Ashada Maasa, Adi in Tamil.

‘Dear Sir Good Morning. I have been reading your Blog since long time and the information u have been sharing is really incredible. Today, I have a question where I am not getting any exact answers ..hope u can clarify it for me.
This is Regarding the AAshada Masam as I got newly married, the customs followed during this month was implied on me as well but the questions unanswered or partially answered.

    1. Why do Mother-In Law and Daughter inlaw should not walk in the same main door or stay together.
    2. Why Husband and wife should not stay together.
    3. Incase if the girl gets conceived during the aashada maasam will there be a negative effect on the child or is there any negetive effect on the mother during delivery time or so.’

    My answer.

All these points have no sanctions by Sruthi or Smriti and hence may be ignored.

These seem to have crept in as Mores/ practices in Communities.

There is also an effort to justify the separation of couples in Aashada, arguing that if the couple were to be together and if the woman conceives in Aashada, she would deliver in Summer .

This is effort to justify something which is not needed.

The premises for the practice is hypothetical.

And Hinduism does not intrude in to private affairs unnecessarily.

And wherever it needs to intervene in personal Life it comes out clearly with no ambiguities.

So one need not try to promote Hinduism by saying things which Hinduism does not.

  • Smash Coconuts Ganesha Garuda Retrieve Lost Objects

I spend about a couple of days at my friend’s house for a couple of days, once in to months, now it has become once a month.

We have been close friends for the past 45 years.

During my recent visit his wife has misplaced Locker keys and was searching for it frantically.

I told her to take a vow to Lord Ganesha that she would smash a Coconut in His temple and she would get   the keys back.

As I have just returned from their Home, I am yet to know whether she got back the Key.

The practice of taking a vow to smash a Coconut, this is different  from breaking the Coconut in the Temple, here the Coconut is thrown at a Stone in the Temple in front of the Idol, in many Temples there are enclosures for this and the broken pieces are picked up by the people around.

This custom has been there in most of the Tamil Brahmin Homes.

This is not restricted to retrieving the lost objects alone,

This practice is followed for success in any endeavour or for successful completion of any major event like Marriage and even for a safe journey.

My mother used to follow this custom so regularly I use to remark that In Lord Shiva‘s House every one will suffer from dsentery because of the Number of Coconuts e break for Ganesha.!(Those ho collect the smashed pieces either eat them ra and many use this for preparing Coconut Chutney)

May be it is irrational  to perform this, but this works for us, and for many more irrational people like me,

So long something works for me it is fine.

I do not look into the rationality behind it.

After all Life itself is irrational.

We use the same technic with Garuda for additional support!

  • Brahmin Gotra List

    Brahmin Gotra List

I published a Post on the Surnames of Brahmin Community.

I had in my mind to publish a complete list of Brahmin Gotras.

    I promptly forgot about it.

Couple of Days ago when I received an alliance proposal for my brother’s Grandson, I was unable to check the Gotra, whether it belongs to the Brahmin Community.

Later I checked it out and it was a Gotra of Brahmin Community.

I am posting a list from the available resources and people may also contribute with authentication to make this List a Comprehensive one.

Each gotra takes the name of a famous Rishi or sage.

Gotra is a concept of patrilineal classification, which identifies the families of a caste.

The original rishis after whom the gotras were named were just Seven in number .

Gotras were further subdivided into ganas and sub ganas.

Another concept is that of Pravara of Rishis who were a few of the most learned and capable sages belonging to that gotra.

Each Brahmin was thus known by his gotra, pravar, sutra and shakha.

There are exceptions to the rule too. For example the descendents of Maharishis Bhrigu and Angirasa cannot marry, because of the same Pravara Rishis, which are common to the two individuals.

The weddings in India are fixed as per the Gotra of the bride and groom.

Gotra matching is one of the most important concerns in North indian Hindu matrimony.

Wedding in similar Gotra is strictly prohibited.

    A Gotra has three Rishis.

This indicates the fact some of the Rishis had more than one wife, at different times , for example Parasara.

I that case the male offspring from each of the Wives are added and the third if there are any more differentiation.

Readers may contribute in this area.

Another instance is when a Rishi changes his Varna.

Viswamitra was a Kshatriya and his original name was Kausika.

Later he became a Brahmin after he reealized Brahma Gnana.

Then he was called a Barhmin and his Gotra was changed from Kausika to Viswamitra.

  • Daily Worship of Five Deities Panchayatana Puja

In Hinduism Paarayana is different from Puja.

Paarayana is the recitation of a particular Sloka, Sahasranama, or Astothra of one Deity or any number of Deities daily.

In this, one need not follow very strict rules of Puja, like Dhik Bandana, Kavacham.

This can be performed at any time , preferably in the morning or in the evening.

A Naivedya is to be offered with Aarthi,(Naivedya and mantras  please read my post on Naivedya)

It is recommended that either Honey ar dried Grapes be offered.

These two are suggested for they do not have any Dosha  or deity specific.

In a Puja strict rules are followed and normally the Puja is initiated by a Guru.

One has to wear Pancha kachcham(How to wear a Pancha Kachcham, please read my post )

Poojas are performed either in the mornings or evenings.

It is recommended that Siva Pooja be performed in the evening; others may be performed either in the morning or in the evening.

It is customary to offer a specific Naivedya for a  particular Deiy; Modhaka for Ganesha,Sarkarai Pongal for Ambika/Vishnu and Maha Naivedyam  for Siva.

( Maha Naivedya- Hot cooked Rice with a spoon ful of Ghee on top of it with two teaspoonful of cooked Thoordal)

There is another specific Puja where Deities representing the Five elements of Nature, Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether are worshiped daily .

This is to be performed in the morning.

As this Puja has Five Deities, this is called the Panchayatana Puja.

    Idols placement In Panchayatnana Pooja.image
    Panchayatnana Pooja idols placement

This was made popular by Sri Adi Sankaracharya.

There is a misconception that only those who worship Siva alone can perform this.

    It  is incorrect.

The reason for the prevalent view is that people mistake the term ‘Smartha‘ means those who worship Siva.

Smartha is One who follows the Smriti, that which is retained by Memory, as against Sruthi that which heard(Vedas)

We have a host of Smritis,

    Narayan Smriti,

    Smarta Smriti.

    Manu Smriti,

    Sukra Smriti. Bruhaspati Smriti.

All those who follow either of these my perform the Panchayatana Puja.

Sankaracharya systematised the worship into Six Systems, The Shan Mathas(read my post on this)

In the Panchayatana Puja,Subrahmanya is not included, but it may be included by having a small Silver Spear(Vel) or a small Silver Snake Idol.

The Sankalpa depends on one’s desires.

The best sankalpa is praying for the welfare of all beings, living and non Living.

The mantras for each Devata may be Astothra .

    Sahasranama is  time-consuming.

The Five elements and the represented Murthis.

    Akasa -Ether/Space-Vishnu.

    Agni-Fie-Ambika.

    Vayu, Air-Aditya.

    Prithvi, Earth-Siva.

    Jala, Water -Ganapati

Here on may find the Vedic representation of the principles of nature.

This may sound slightly different as Aditya  represents Vayu, while Vishnu who is normally associated with Prithvi is seen representing Space as Vishnu is an Amsa of Parama Purusha who represents Space as well.

    ‘Akasyatipo Vishnu Agnischaiva Maheswari,

Vayo Suryah  Kshtir  Isah Jalan Nyasa Ganathipa’

There is school of thought which prescribes different  ways of placing the idols in the Puja.

    One is:

    Shiva panchayata

    Vishnu                Surya

          Shiva

    Devi                    Ganesh

    Vishnu panchayata

    Shiva                 Ganesh

          Vishnu

    Devi                 Surya

    Surya panchayata

    Shiva                 Ganesh

     Surya

    Devi                 Vishnu

    Devi panchayata

    Vishnu                 Shiva

            Devi

    Surya                 Ganesh

    Ganesh panchayata

    Vishnu                 Shiva

              Ganesh

    Devi                     Surya

That is to place the Murthy which one traditionally worships as prescribed by his Kula Sampradaya.

The other method is to place the Ishta Devata, Preferred personal God in the center and  place all the others around it.

Some use natural Stones instead of Murthis.

    For..

Surya Crystal from Vallam Tamil Nadu.

    Ganesha  Red Sonebhadra from Sone,Bihar.

    Vishnu Saligrama from Gandaki, Nepal.

Shiva, Bana Linga from Narmada, M.P.

Ambika Swarnamukhi from Swarna Mukhi from Andhra Pradesh.

if you  plan to use small Idols ensure that they are not taller than your thumb.

    Panchayatana Puja Procedure.

Start with Ganapati, Adithya,Subrahmanya,Ambika, Shiva and Vishnu.

Follow the Link for detailed mantras for Panchayatana Puja.
