    Rahu Graha.

Rahu represents many ill aspects in general. Rahu is identified with Black Cobra, poison, Zircon, black magic, gambling, black gram, black stone, blade grass (Dhruva in Hindi) menial jobs, slavery, all sorts of skin ailments, venereal deceases, impotency, childlessness, jail/imprisonments etc etc. In short this planet mostly gives only negative results when it is ill placed in one’s horoscope.

If Rahu is placed in the fifth house from Lagna or Ascendant, then the native is most likely (he/she) childless and in some cases only female issues and surely no male child. If there is any conjunction with other planet, this result may, however, vary.

Likewise, if this planet is placed in the 6th house, the native is likely to suffer from skin ailments, skin burns, dryness, sore skin etc. That too when the Rahu Dasa is running; and if Rahu is transiting through the 6th house, then ill effects are sure to be there and critical too.

To weed off the negative aspects of this planet, there are many remedial suggestions given in the ancient astrology. One such suggestion is to consume the essence of the Blade Grass daily, about three to five tea spoonfuls, for a consecutive 48 days. This way one gets his/her blood purified and the skin ailment vanishes. This medicinal remedy is so powerful that I have seen people getting better after consuming it.

And growth is dependent on Protein intake.

Growth hormone (GH), also known as somatotropin (or as human growth hormone [hGH or HGH] in its human form), is apeptide hormone that stimulates growth, cell reproduction, and cell regeneration in humans and other animals. It is thus important inhuman development. It is a type of mitogen which is specific only to certain kinds of cells. Growth hormone is a 191-amino acid, single-chain polypeptide that is synthesized, stored, and secreted by somatotropic cells within the lateral wings of the anterior pituitary gland.

    How does this enhance Growth?

    • Increases calcium retention, and strengthens and increases the mineralization of bone
    • Increases muscle mass through sarcomere hypertrophy
    • Promotes lipolysis
    • Increases protein synthesis
    • Stimulates the growth of all internal organs excluding the brain
    • Plays a role in homeostasis
    • Reduces liver uptake of glucose
    • Promotes gluconeogenesis in the liver.
    • Contributes to the maintenance and function of pancreatic islets
    • Stimulates the immune system
    • Increases deiodination of T4 to T3.

Deficiency of Protein result  in Growth Failure and short stature among children.

It also causes delayed sexual maturity.

And an unsound and subnormal growth might result in mental issue as well.

GH( growth deficiency) deficiency  in adults may manifest as depression.

To cure this GH deficiency GH Therapy is undertaken and its effects are yet to be proved.

It is better to have a balanced diet  including Protein.

    Are these Supplements safe?

    Objective

To determine the effect of nutritional supplementation on height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) in short and lean prepubertal children.

    Study design

A prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial of nutritional supplementation at the endocrinology department of a tertiary pediatric medical center of healthy, lean, short, prepubertal children 3-9-years-old. Anthropometry measurements were measured at 6 months.

    Results

Two hundred participants (149 boys) entered the study and 171 (85.5%) completed the intervention period. Baseline characteristics including age, sex, height-SDS, weight-SDS, BMI-SDS, and dietary caloric and protein intakes were similar in the formula and placebo groups. ‘Good’ consumers (intake of ≥50% of the recommended dose) in the formula group significantly improved height-SDS (P < .001) and weight-SDS (P = .005) with no change in BMI-SDS compared with ‘poor’ consumers and the placebo group. In the formula-treated group a positive correlation was found between the amount of formula consumed per body weight and the gain in height-SDS (r = 0.44, P < .001) and weight-SDS (r = 0.35, P = .002); no significant correlations were found in the placebo group. No serious adverse events were reported during the study.

    Conclusions

Nutritional intervention with the formula was found to be a feasible, effective, and safe approach for promoting the physical growth of short and lean prepubertal children.

Horlicks seems to fit the bill.

I have been watching people consuming it for as long a I remember and I recall doctors prescribing it to convalescents, including pregnant women both pre natal and post natal.

And with added flavor children do not shy away from it.

  • Why Ayush Mruthyunjaya Homas

The Blessing , Aaseervatha Mantra states,

    Sree varchasvam ayushyam aarogyam maavithaath

    Sobamanam maheeyanthe

    Dhaanyam Dhanam pasum bahuputra laabham

    Satha samvathsarm dheeragamaayuhu.

The blessings start with auspicious life.

    The rest come later.

Once born it is the desire of one is to live as long as possible.

Dheergayus means a life span of 120 years in Kali Yuga, though it is mentioned as Satha Samvathsaram( 100 years)

Life depends on , contrary to what many think, wholly external forces not in our control,be it the air we beathe, water ,earth, fire and the ether.

    We take these for granted.

We would appreciate them only in their absence.

The human body is made up of the five elements that make up the Cosmos.

We are nothing but a reflection, photocopy of the Cosmis in miniature.

One is likely to lead a longer life if these five elements in the Cosmos and in our bodies sync.

If there is a variation, one falls sick and in serious maladjustments one leaves the body.

While we strive to be tuned into Nature’s Rhythm, Nature should also cooperate.

That is not in our hands.

As we are nothing but the Cosmos in a small scale, our chitta ( higher plane over mind and intellect) should will for longevity.

By self tuning the Chitta one controls the Cosmos and its Principles.

    This is Yoga.

This fine tuning can be done by chanting, listening to mystically locked sounds called Mantras.

And the propitiator of life , Agni, Fire carries the power of the Mantras to the other elements ,which being the same for us and the Cosmos ignites our Chitta.

And longevity is assured if the Homa Rites are performed correctly, as prescribed in the texts.

There are two types of Homas for Longevity.

    The Ayush Homa and

    The Mrutyanjaya Homa.

    mahamritunjay-mantra
    Maha Mrutunjaya Mantra.

Though they seem to address the same issue, Longevity there is a minor differnce.

While Ayush Homa increases the Life span in general, the Mrutunjaya Homa addresses the issue of ill health and diseases.

It is one thing to attain Longevity but Disease free Life is another..

It is advisable to perform both at the same time.

It is ordained in the Smriti that these Homas are to be performed every year for a child upto to the age of Five.

And one can have this  performed any time in during one’s life till one reaches Sixty.

For them these are performed in Sashtiapthapoorthy and Sathabhishekam.

    Mruthyunjaya Homa.

Maha Mruthyunjaya Homam is dedicated to Lord Shiva to avoid untimely death. The Mruthyunjaya Homam is performed to achieve Jaya or Victory over Mritya or death. The object of worship of this homa is Lord Shiva. One of the synonyms of Lord Shiva is Mrityu. Mrityu which means death of the death or the destroyer of death. During this homa one chants 21 mantras. The prominent offerings in this homa are durva grass and an herb called amrita.

The former is famous for purifying blood and the latter is used as a medicine for in a, it is believed that this homam bestows longevity on the performer. The hymns are devoted curable diseases like arbuda or cancer. Since these are used as offerings in this hom to Mrityu, the God of death, praying for long life. These hymns are used in the purnahuti or the final offering in the famous Soma sacrifice. This homa also alleviates Mrityu dosha or untimely death.Dedicated to Lord Shiva to avoid untimely death The Mrityunjaya Homa is performed to achieve Jaya or Victory over Mritya or death.

Beware Maggi Lovers : Cooking Maggi Noodles in wrong way is very dangerous for health.

There is a certain way to cook maggi. You may be thinking whats new in this but the cooking process which is shown behind the packet maybe right but it is surely harmful to your body because maggi noodles are coated with Wax which harms us and takes 3 to 4 days to excrete the wax which is harmful. The ingredient called Msg can make you fat and fat people kknow how much difficult it is to loose their weight. Maggi should not be given to young children as they are also harmful to them.

Normally, how we cook the instant noodles is to put the noodles into a pot with water, throw in the powder and let it cook for around 3 minutes and then it’s ready to eat. This is the WRONG way and dangerous method of cooking the instant noodles like Maggi. By doing this, when we actually boil the ingredients in the powder, normally with MSG, it will change the molecular structure of the MSG, causing it to be toxic. The other thing that you may or may not realize is that, the noodles are coated with wax and it will take around 4 to 5 days for the body to excrete the wax after you have eaten the noodles.

    CORRECT METHOD OF COOKING MAGGI:

The correct way to cook instant noodles without harming our bodies and health is
    1. Boil the noodles in a pot of water.
    2. Once the noodles are cooked, take out the noodles, and throw away the water which contains wax.
    3. Boil another pot of water, add the cooked noodles into the hot boiling water and then turn off the stove.
    4. Only at this stage when the stove is off, and while the water is very hot, add the flavouring powder into the water, to make noodle soup.
    5. However, if you need dry noodles, remove the noodles and add the flavoring powder and toss it to get dry noodles.

    2. Maggi is non vegetarian

Maggi contains MSG (Monosodium glutamate) used as a flavor enhancer, which is made? using Bactosoytone, itself made from soy protein using a catalyst enzyme porcine (taken from intestine of Pig). Chemically, catalyst never goes in the molecular structure of Bactosoytone, hence it’s Vegetarian for Nestle. MSG as such is harmful to health. Maggi also launched no-MSG series known as Vegetable Atta-Maggie, but that’s just a makeover.

Atta Maggie contains? DSG (DiSodium Glutamate), which does contain Bactosoytone. Not written in ingredients as such, hidden under alias Flavor-627. Maggi also contains flavour enhancers E 631 and E 635. Also a huge number of popular packed foods such as Magginoodles, biscuits etc and even other products such as toothpaste, soaps etc contain animal fat in them, that too, mostly PIG FAT.

“Disodium glutamate is produced from dried fish or dried seaweed and is often added to instant noodles, potato chips and other snacks, savouryrice, tinned vegetables, cured meats, and packaged soup”.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG – E621) is a flavor enhancer commonly added to Chinesefood, canned vegetables, soups and processed meats.

The following table indicates additives which are always derived from animals.

    E Number Additive Name
120 Cochineal, Carminic acid, Carmines Natural Red 4 – colouring
A colouring that makes many foods red. Found in alcoholic drinks, fruit pie fillings, jams, many sweets and even cheeses. Cochineal is made from the female insect found on cacti called Dactylopius Coccus. She is boiled alive or left to “cook” alive through sun exposure. Cochineal is the result of crushing scales of the insect into a red powder.
    441 Gelatine – Emulsifier / Gelling Agent
You may not find this E number 441 on food ingredients listings anymore because instead of an additive, Gelatine has now been classed as food (made of animal skin and hoofs) in it’s own right. Remember, all types of gelatine are animal based and can be found in dairy products like yoghurts, plus many kinds of confectionery, jellies and other sweets.
    542 Bone phosphate – Anti-caking agent
631 Disodium inosinate – Flavour enhancer
Almost always made from animals and fish
    635 Disodium 5′-ribonucleotides – Flavour enhancer
    Often made from animals
901 Beeswax – white and yellow – Glazing Agent
    Not suitable for Vegans.
    966 Lactitol – Sweetener
Derived from Lactose, commercially prepared using whey, so unsuitable for vegans.

These make up preparations are not new to India.

Cosmetology Ancient India.Book.Image.jpg Cosmetology Ancient India.

Sanskrit and Tamil literature  abound in details on this subject and practical tips are available.

    A Sample.

    Lip balm / lip salve

“Cracked lips, besides being painful, spoil the beauty of the face. The following remedy was recommended in such cases – “If the rind of Bel fruit (Aegle marmelos Corr.) is levigated (i.e. powdered and mixed) in a woman’s milk and the paste thus prepared is applied to the cracked lips, within 10 days the cracking will stop and the cracks will heal[5].”

    Skin lightning and exfoliating scrub

A fair skin has always been an attraction for Indians. The following paste used to be applied to the body to make the skin a shade or two lighter and give it a natural glow – “Pound together The root of Kosta [Kooth or Kushtha, English name: Costus.][6] (Saussurea lappa Clarke.), Til seeds (Sessamum indicum Linn.), the leaves of Sirisa (Albizzia lebbek Benth.), the leaves of Chopda (Pongamia pinnata Pierr.), the wood ofDevdar (Cedrus deodara Roxb.) and the wood of Zadali Haled (Berberis aristata DC.) Roast this mixture between dried cakes of Buffalo dung, then take it out and grind it properly to a fine powder. If the paste made from this compound is applied to the body for three consecutive days, the above mentioned desired results will be obtained”.

    Cure for dandruff

“Pound khas-khas seeds (Papaver somniferum Linn.) in milk and apply to the scalp. It will cure dandruff”.[5]

    Rejuvenation process (Kayakalpa)

A very famous rejuvenation treatment called Kayakalpa used to be practiced. The meaning of the word is to make a person look young, bring about a change in the color of the hair and texture of the skin, improve the eyesight and so forth. “Take equal quantities of Kadunimba (Azadirachta indica Juss.) leaves, Maka (Eclipta alba Haask.) leaves, Mundi [Gorakhmundi]  (Sphaeranthus indicus Linn.) leaves, Nirgundi [Nagoda, Nirgundi and Nirgunda (Vitex negundo Linn.)leaves and Vova (Carum copticum Benth.) leaves.

Dry all the 5 ingredients in the shade. Then powder this mixture. Take internally two pinches of this powder twice a day. While the subject is under this treatment, the diet should mainly consist of milk and rice only. Quite soon the person will look younger, the skin will become lustrous and even the grey hair will turn black”.

    Depilatory

The presence of hair on arms, face, legs and pubic area, was considered an eyesore, and certain formulae were practiced to remove them.

“Pound together dried fruits of Aavalakatti (Emblica officinalis Gaertn.) and dried fruits of Pimpali (Piper longum Linn.). Soak this mixture in the milky latex of Nivadunga (Cactus: Euphorbia nivulia Ham.) If this compound is applied to the desired place, the hair from that area will fall off”.[5]

    Breast developers

“Powder together the root of Aswagandha (Withania somnifera Dunal.), the fruit of Gajapimpali(Scindapsus officinalis Schott.), the root of Kosta (Saussurea lappa Clarke.), and the rhizomes of Vekhanda[Vekhanda, English name: Sweet flag. (Acorus calamus Linn.). To this powder add butter made from buffalo’s milk and massage the bust with this medicated butter. This will increase the bustline and make it firm and shapely”.

Some more formulae from other sources, earlier than 18th and 19th cent A.D. include the following:

    Face pack

“Take Masura—a lentil common in India (Lens culinaris Medic.) and pound with Madhu (Honey). The paste so prepared, rubbed for seven nights, gives the splendor of the petals of the white lotus flower to the face”.

    Cure for pimples

“The application of plaster composed of Kustumburu [Dhana, Dhania, English name: Coriander](Coriandrum sativum Linn.), Vacha or Vekhanda (Acorus calamus Linn.), Lodhra [Lodhar, Lodhra. English name: The Lodh tree] (Symplocos racemosa Roxb.) and Kushtha or Kosta (Saussurea lappa Clarke.) pasted together is also recommended for curing pimples”

    Mouth freshener

I quote a verse translated from Sanskrit: “Oh! beautiful damsel, make fragrant quickly, Poog-phala i.e.Supari or Betel nut (Areca catechu Linn.), for rulers of the earth (Kings) by mixing together Kushtha(Saussurea lappa Linn.), Tagara (Valeriana wallichii DC.), Jatiphala (Myrstica fragrans Houtt.), Karpoora(Cinnamomum camphora Nees and Eberm.), Lavanga (Syzygium aromaticum Merrill and Perry.) and Ela(Ellettaria cardamomum Maton)”

    Cure for lice and nits

“On tying the head with a piece of cloth dipped in the juice of Phanivalli (Piper betel Linn.) or ‘Paan” leaves, to which has been added Paratda (Mercury), lice and nits would be finished off.

General hair remedy and cure for the prematurely graying

“Juice of Bhringaraja or Maka (Eclipta alba Hassk.), together with Lohakitta (Iron-rust: Non-botanical. Iron oxide, normally Red oxide.), Phalatrikam or Triphala = Collection of three fruits, viz. Harada [Hirda, English name: Chebulic myrobalan (Terminalia chebula retz.), Beheda [Behada, English name: Belleric myrobalan][6] (Terminalia bellerica retz.) and Avala [Amla, English name: Emblic myrobalan (Phyllanthus emblica Gaertn.), cooked in oil when applied (to the scalp), would cure dandruff, itching, alopecia and would also darken the hair, which have become grey prematurely.

    Deodorant powder

“The powder from the barks of Sahakara [Aam, Amba, English name: Mango][17] (Mangifera indica Linn.) tree and Dadima [Dadim, Dalimba; English name: Pomegranate][17] (Punica granatum Linn.) tree, mixed with Shankha (Fragrant Shell) powder and applied to the relevant part of the body, removes bad odour. The powder made of Chincha (Tamarindus indica Linn.) and Karanja (Pongamia glabra Vent.) seeds, if applied also removes bad odour.[19,20]

Examples of above given formulae serve to give some idea of Ancient Indian researchers and their contribution to Indian Medical Lore.

The research involved in this work was to compile the cosmetic formulae from various sources and then to find the proper equivalent botanical names for the Sanskrit and Prakrit terminologies (For the ingredients used in the formulae). This was done with the help of native people and experienced vaidyas in South India and Maharashtra. Identification was done by studying the properties of the plant and if these plant names were the actual ingredients used.

Some of the formulae are still in use by some rural women in the interiors of India. Some formulae are in use even today by vaidyas practicing the Ayurveda branch of medicine.

This study forms mainly an ethnobotanical contribution to our knowledge and is hoped that it forms the basis for further chemical, clinical and allied investigations in the cosmetic and therapeutic aspects of the Indian botanicals.
