Fishing Community is one of the earliest and most ancient communities of India.

The Vedas and the Purans have references to this Community.

Bhishma was raised by a woman belonging to Fishermen community.

Ancient Tami literature refers to the Fishermen Community as Paradavars.

The Geographical division of the area was classified as Neydal and a detailed description of the way of Living of the Fishermen community.

They had a distinct living style, had their special Deities and way of Living.

India has a Coast Line of 8118 Kms and Nine maritime States.

Population -14,485,354  -Census 20o3.

Contribution of fisheries to Gross Domestic Product ( GDP)
2007-08 at current prices
a) GDP from fisheries Rs.35,650 crore
b) Contribution of fisheries sector to
i) Total GDP 0.75%
ii) GDP from Agriculture sector 4.56%

They are closely knit community.

Inter caste marriages are very rare .

They have strict codes in terms of Social  Behavior.

Now they have modernized by mechanized Fishing.

But the community is controlled  a group of People who own Mechanized Trawlers.

Most of these people are benamis of other community people.
