  • Opium,Marijuana Hinduism Aghoris

Recently there was a question in Quora.com on
Hinduism: Why do Aghoris consume marijuana in some holy shrines? How is it linked with Spirituality?

My answer to the question was posted on the site.

I am providing excerpts and Link at the end of the post.

The instances of Religious sects using intoxicants and Narcotics to heighten the religious ecstasy is not new.

Religious fanatics of all Religions indulge in this practice.

They mistake the illusions and hallucinations created by these substances as Religious ecstasy .

There are also people who subscribe to the view that offering  narcotics like Marijuana,Opium is sanctioned by Hinduism.

When I had been to Ujjain to have a Darshan of Mahakaleswara, I was offered country Liquor as Prasad  which was offered earlier to the Deity.

Of course I refused to partake that.

There are also temples in North India that offer narcotics as offering to the Deities.

This has no sanction of the Vedas.

A corrupt form of Karma Kanda of the Sruthi was practiced by the Mimasakas .

It took the Life’s efforts of Adi Sankaracharya to drive away these obnoxious practices.

Here a word about the Devas or loosely Translated, Angels, being drunkards who drink Liquor.

The Avatars of Rama and Krishna were also reported to be indulging in this.

There were two types of Drinks.

One is Soma Bana and the other is Sura Bana.

The Soma Bana or the Nectar of the Plant Soma was used for Homas and  drinking Soma Bana was sanctioned as it is not an Intoxicant.

The other is Sura Bana which induces intoxication and it was classified as a Sin to drink it.

(Ref Our Texts-Rik Veda, were Soma Bana is praised: ‘CHO’ Ramaswamy’s ‘Indu Maha Samudram(இந்து  மஹா  சமுத்திரம்).

The Tantric Sastra is also misunderstood and misquoted quite often.

Right from the Kaapalika  Sect to Nithyananda of the present day misinterpreted this for their licentiousness.

Tantric Sastra is too vast a subject to be accommodated in a blog.

Those interested may read  the Book Sakthi and Saaktha by Sir.John Woodroffe.

Those who perform Aabhichara Pooja( the performance of worship where corpses are used often quote this mantra from the Lalita Sahasra Nama.

“947   Pancha pretha manchadhi sayini – She who sleeps on the cot made of five corpses”.

    This is literal translation.

Lalita Sahasra Nama is a Mystic Text, that’s why it delivers results.

    The meaning is,

The One who sleeps (Yoga Nidra-a wakefulness while appearing to sleep in Yoga,Lord Narayana also has this Attribute of Yoga Nidra),

On a cot whose support are Brahma,Vishnu,Rudra, Eesana ( Isnana) and Sadasiva.

    Brahma represents the Potential Energy,

    Vishnu,Kinetic Energy,

    Rudra, Dissolution ,

Eesana,  the invisible power that governs the universe, and

Sadasiva, “Pancha Brahma Upanishad Verses 1 to 6:

The Para Brahma took shape in stages of Sathyojatha, Aghora, Vamadeva, Thathpurusha and Ishana. 1

Sathyojatha is the aspect of earth and is the Sun, Goddess Lakshmi, Brahma, the letter Om, Rig Veda, Garhapathyagni (Household fire), mantras, Saptha Swaras (seven notes) and yellow colour. It gives all that is wished for. 2″

Khmer Gilt Bronze idol of Lord Sadasiva.

    Sadasiva

    Goddess Lalitha Presides over all.

Following practices not sanctioned by the Sruthi by misquoting is an insult to Hindusim.

“Aghori sect is the corrupted form of Tantric System of Indian Philosophy.
The ‘ cessation of the modification of Chitta( modification of the Mind)’ is defined as Yoga-Patanjali’s YogaSutra-1
In plain English, it may be loosely translated as the cessation of thought processes.
This needs  knowledge and Right determination(Vairagya),Bhagavad Gita.
To achieve concentration is most mportant.
More the number of senses-,Eyes.Ears,Nose Body,Mouth- are involved in the act easier the process of Concentration.
Sex is an act where all the senses are concentrated or focused on a single act.
A system was developed to use this aspect help in achieving Concentration and attain Yoga Siddhi.
    This is Tantric Shastra..
Certain sexual practices are devised to use Sex  in this process..
The primary rule is that it only the wife/Husband this has to be engaged with..
While ,before, and after the act certain procedures are laid down.
This is from the individual level.
    From the Macro level,
All the senses one has and the Five Elements(Earth,Water,Fire,Air and Ether) are the embodiment and instruments to achieve understanding.
For example Ether is for Communication,Fire for Heat and Cold,Earth for Smell,Water for Cold and Air for Smell,
Activity that brings in all these elements in its full force together is Sex.
This is also another reason for the development of Tantra Shastras.
The concentration, it is suggested, at the Ultimate level, one has to concentrate on.Nothing”.
This is easily possible in the Act of Sex , especially when when one achieves Orgasm.”

  • Why Offer Betel Leaves Nut Fruits in Temples

There is a query as to why the Hindus take Coconut, Betel  Leaves , Nuts and Plantains to Temples?

In Hindu Temples the Deities are offereds as Naivaedyam(refer my post on how to offer Naivedyam) various things.

Most important are the betel Leaves, Nuts and Plantains.

The was a post in Facebook yesterday that while Muslims carry The Koran, The Christians The Bible, the Hindus take Coconuts and fruits because Hindus always think of Food, even in Temples.

Nothing can be farther from The Truth.

Hinduism is not a crowd puller not does it seek popularity and does not need external expressions of Piety, in fact this is condemned by Lord Krishna in The Bhagavad Gita as’ Hypocrisy”Aashadabhooti.

Then why these the things are taken to temples and offered?

Coconut  has three Eyes , as it were.

    Coconuts.
    Coconuts.

Hinduism, more specifically Saiva Siddhartha , lists three Impediments to Spiritual Evolution.

    They are:

The three eyes of the Coconut represent these three impediments to Self Realization.

When one breaks these , it is a symbolic gesture of transcending these three in the quest for Realizing Self or Godhood.

Another explanation is Saiva Siddhanta postulates Three Fundamental Entities.

    Pasu(பசு ), Pathi ( பதி)  and Paasam  ( பாசம்)

Here Pathi is Siva in Saiva Siddhanta, (corresponds to Brahman),Pasu (Jivatman) and Paasam(Bondage)

Once the chain in transcended one becomes  the One of which he is a part(rather he reverts to the Original State)

    Betel Leaves.

Look at the shape of the Betel leaves,

    Betel
    Betel

It represents the Female principle, The Potent and Latent One(Prakruthi, loosely translated as Nature )

Nuts represent Experience , the taste a mixture of sweet and bitterness.

    Betel,Platnains,Nuts.
    Betel,Plantaisn,Nuts.

When Nature is is expended by one by experiences he is released from Bondage.

Plantains or any Fruit , according to Indian Philosophy, represents Fruition or completion of any Effort.

These representative offerings are to remind One of the Impermanence of Life and the need to realize Self or Godhood.

This is what is behind the offerings of these to Deities in Temples.

As to carrying  Religious Books like the Koran or The Bible, to Temples, it is to be noted that Hinduism advocates Religion as Purely Personal and no Public worship is sanctioned in the Vedas.

Building Temples and collective worship is a later development by Agama System( refer my blog on Agama and Vedas)

I shall post some blogs on the type of offerings and their meanings later.

I agree that people should know Thevaaram Tiruvaasakam or Slokas by-heart and Pray at the Temple.

It should be from the heart not by referring to Books.

    Please try, it is easy.

This post is not against Mr.Ilangkumaraar’s views, I understand his anguish, but to inform people that our offerings at the Temples and other practices are not illogical.

To begin with at least Switch off the Mobile Phones in the Temples.

    Arudra Darisanam Lord Siva Facts

The Arudra Darisanam falls on the 26th of December,2015.

10, Maargazhi Masam, 1937 Shaka, Sri Manmatha Year, Kaliyugam 5115.

It is the Star in which Lord Siva is assumed to have been born- Arudra or Tiruvadirai in Tamil

Worship of Siva on this day is considered auspicious.

Lord Siva is called ‘Ayonijan’-the One who does not reside in a Womb.

Lord Vishnu when he descends to Earth, assumes a particular form and goes through the motions befitting that Birth.

    As in Rama, Krishna, Balarama,Vamana,Parasurama,Narasimha,Matsya,Koorma,Varaha….

In the first three he undergoes the ordeals one is expected to go through as a Man, while in the others His behavior was in keeping with the characteristics applicable to the Genus.

Lord Siva, on the other hand, is never born of a womb nor does He undergo the trials and tribulations specific to the Genus.

He appears from nowhere suddenly , does His job disappears as in Pitukku Mansumanathau.Sundarar episode, etc.

    Siva Facts.

Siva means ‘prosperity’ ,Mangalam in Sanskrit.

Siva is not to be confused with Rudra who forms the Trinity along with Brahma and Vishnu, just as one gets confused between Narayana and Vishnu.

Rudra is One of the 11 Rudras while Vishnu is one of the  12 Adityas.

This is the reason in Brahmin Marriages,of Aiyars, the ‘Cheer’ is 11 or multiples , and in Aiyangars, it is 12 or multiples thereof.

    ‘Adithyaanam aham Vishnu’

    ‘Rudranaam Sankarosmi’

    Bhagavad Gita.

Sankara is one who destroys to recreate, Vishnu is One who protects.

(Vishnu is from the Root Jishnu meaning the Supporter or Protector)

    Siva represents Five Functions.

    Srushti-Creation

    Sthithi-Maintanence

    Samharam-Destruction

    Thirodaanam -Hiding(The Reality) and

    Anugraham(Blessings)

He is The Laya or the Cosmic Vibration.

He Dances to His Laya(Cosmic Dance of Lord Nataraja)

His Moolaksharam or the Mantra that represents and Bonds Him is Panchaakshara-Five Letters.

    Nama Sivaya

Some pronounce it as Namach chivaaya-this is incorrect

    Lord Nataraja
    Lord Nataraja

These Five letters represent Five Elements, Pancha butas that make up th macrocosm

    Earth,Water,Fire, Air and Ether.

    It also represents the Panchtendriyaas-(Gnanendriyaas)

    Eyes,Ears,Nose,Skin,Mouth.

It also represents the Qualities of

    Sight,

    Hearing,

    Smell,

    Taste,

Tactile sensations( these five are called Tanmatras)

He is the embodiment of the Dormant Energy.Animates

Coupled with Parvati, His consort who is the representation of Dynamic energy, He is complete.

Siva’s Quality is Hot, therefore we offer Him Vilva , which is cold in Nature.

He is Hot because He resides in Burning Ghats, Narayana is Cold as He is in Ocean of Milk which is cold(therefore we offer Tulsi to Narayana as it is Hot in Nature.

His Color is Red Hot Ember.

He is The Silent Preceptor, Lord Dakshina Moorthy, who teaches through Silence.

    Lord Krishna teaches through Discourse.

Lord Siva is to be approached as you approach a Guru, while Narayana as Your Father.

    ‘Dhritaraashtra Uvaacha:
    Dharmakshetre kurukshetre samavetaa yuyutsavah;
Maamakaah paandavaashchaiva kimakurvata sanjaya.’ – 1.1

    Dhritarashtra Said.

    Sanjaya-Oh! Sanjaya

Dharma Kshtre- in the Holy place of Dharma

    Kurukshetre-Kurukhetra

    Samaveda-all assembled with one intent

    yuyuthsuvah-(of) fighting with each other

    mamakah-mine

    Panadava cha eva-even Pandu‘s sons

    Kim-what

    Atharvatha-did they do?

    Dhritarashtra said’

Sanjaya! At the Dhrama Bhoomi(place of Righteousness) Kurukshetra, what did mine and the sons of Pandu do,with the intention fighting against each other ?”

    Dharma.

The concept of Dharma in Indian Philosophy is very intricate and Complex.

    Dharma is

‘Verily, that which is Dharma is truth.
Therefore they say of a man who speaks truth, “He speaks the Dharma,”
or of a man who speaks the Dharma, “He speaks the Truth.”

Verily, both these things are the same.

    —(Brh. Upanishad, 1.4.14) (2)’

Dhaaranaad dharma ity aahur dharmena vidhrtaah prajaah, Yat syaad dhaarana sanyuktam sa dharma iti nishchayah,”

    i.e.,

Dharma upholds both this-worldly and other-worldly affairs
    —(Mbh 8.69.58).”
that which upholds, supports or maintains the regulatory order of the universe is Dharma
At the Cosmic level it is called Rta or the regulatory Order of the Universe which consists of Principles for the maintanence of the order of The Universe.
According to Taittriya Upanishad it is something that One must not stray from
    Satyanna Pramadhidhidaivam, Dharmanna Pramadhidhaivyam’
Here it is equated with Truth.
Taken as a whole Dharma means it is that is in consonance with Universal laws, which can be understood only by the Wise.
This is what Krishna says when he says ‘even the learned do not understand the Karma or Dharma  as it is very subtle and can be understood only by the Realized.
Then how do we follow it/
Lord Krishna says it is by following the set of Rules of the Vedas, unquestionably.
As you keep following them the Dharma will dawn on you and you will follow automatically.

  • Was Lord Krishna Born to Devaki?

Most of us are under the impression that Lord Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva.

Vivid descriptions are known to us about the Birth of Lord Krishna in the prison of Kamsa in the dead of the night on Ahstami Thithi,Rohini Nakshtra to an extent that even Krishna’s date of Birth has been determined.

Lord Vishnu is said to be Brahma Swarupam and is Beyond Birth ,Death and is Indescribable(Avyakthan)

While going through the Bhagavad Gita Chapter 49 (read the Gita daily, a Chapter a Day first thing in the morning for the past 10 years-every day I get new insights  and new doubts!)

When I read the 7th Sloka where Krishna uses the word ‘srujaami’ meaning ‘reveal’ while describing how he is born time and again, I had this doubt.

How come, then, He was said to be born of Devaki?

The use of the word ‘srujaami’ means revealing and not born  and I know the Bhagavad Gita is very careful in choosing words.

    Lord Krishna is Born
    Lord Krishna’s Birth

So I started checking Srimad  Bhagavatham which describes the birth of Lord Krishna in detail.

To my surprise I found that Lord Krishna was not born to Devaki as mortals would from the Womb for He is Ayonijan(One who does not stay in the Womb)

This is what the Bhagavatham says of Lord Krishna’s Birth,

” Thereafter, at the auspicious time for the appearance of the Lord, the entire universe was surcharged with all the qualities of goodness, beauty and peace. The constellation Rohiṇī appeared, as did stars like Aśvinī. The sun, the moon and the other stars and planets were very peaceful. All directions appeared extremely pleasing, and the beautiful stars twinkled in the cloudless sky. Decorated with towns, villages, mines and pasturing grounds, the earth seemed all-auspicious. The rivers flowed with clear water, and the lakes and vast reservoirs, full of lilies and lotuses, were extraordinarily beautiful. In the trees and green plants, full of flowers and leaves, pleasing to the eyes, birds like cuckoos and swarms of bees began chanting with sweet voices for the sake of the demigods. A pure breeze began to blow, pleasing the sense of touch and bearing the aroma of flowers, and when the brāhmaṇas engaging in ritualistic ceremonies ignited their fires according to Vedic principles, the fires burned steadily, undisturbed by the breeze. Thus when the birthless Lord Viṣṇu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, was about to appear, the saints and brāhmaṇas, who had always been disturbed by demons like Kaḿsa and his men, felt peace within the core of their hearts, and kettledrums simultaneously vibrated from the upper planetary system..

Vasudeva then saw the newborn child, who had very wonderful lotuslike eyes and who bore in His four hands the four weapons śańkhacakragadā andpadma. On His chest was the mark of Śrīvatsa and on His neck the brilliant Kaustubha gem. Dressed in yellow, His body blackish like a dense cloud, His scattered hair fully grown, and His helmet and earrings sparkling uncommonly with the valuable gem Vaidūrya, the child, decorated with a brilliant belt, armlets, bangles and other ornaments, appeared very wonderful.

Madhusūdana, because of Your appearance, I am becoming more and more anxious in fear of Kaḿsa. Therefore, please arrange for that sinful Kaḿsa to be unable to understand that You have taken birth from my womb.

SB 10.3.40: After you received that benediction and I disappeared, you engaged yourselves in sex to have a son like Me, and I fulfilled your desire.

SB 10.3.41: Since I found no one else as highly elevated as you in simplicity and other qualities of good character, I appeared in this world as Pṛśnigarbha, or one who is celebrated as having taken birth from Pṛśni.

SB 10.3.42: In the next millennium, I again appeared from the two of you, who appeared as My mother, Aditi, and My father, Kaśyapa. I was known as Upendra, and because of being a dwarf, I was also known as Vāmana.

SB 10.3.43: O supremely chaste mother, I, the same personality, have now appeared of you both as your son for the third time. Take My words as the truth.
