Brahmin Gotra List

I published a Post on the Surnames of Brahmin Community.

I had in my mind to publish a complete list of Brahmin Gotras.

I promptly forgot about it.

Couple of Days ago when I received an alliance proposal for my brother’s Grandson, I was unable to check the Gotra, whether it belongs to the Brahmin Community.

Later I checked it out and it was a Gotra of Brahmin Community.

I am posting a list from the available resources and people may also contribute with authentication to make this List a Comprehensive one.

Each gotra takes the name of a famous Rishi or sage.

Gotra is a concept of patrilineal classification, which identifies the families of a caste.

The original rishis after whom the gotras were named were just Seven in number .

Gotras were further subdivided into ganas and sub ganas.

Another concept is that of Pravara of Rishis who were a few of the most learned and capable sages belonging to that gotra.

Each Brahmin was thus known by his gotra, pravar, sutra and shakha.

There are exceptions to the rule too. For example the descendents of Maharishis Bhrigu and Angirasa cannot marry, because of the same Pravara Rishis, which are common to the two individuals.

The weddings in India are fixed as per the Gotra of the bride and groom.

Gotra matching is one of the most important concerns in North indian Hindu matrimony.

Wedding in similar Gotra is strictly prohibited.

A Gotra has three Rishis.

This indicates the fact some of the Rishis had more than one wife, at different times , for example Parasara.

I that case the male offspring from each of the Wives are added and the third if there are any more differentiation.

Readers may contribute in this area.

Another instance is when a Rishi changes his Varna.

Viswamitra was a Kshatriya and his original name was Kausika.

Later he became a Brahmin after he reealized Brahma Gnana.

Then he was called a Barhmin and his Gotra was changed from Kausika to Viswamitra.

    2. Hi Shikha,

Alamban’s are Vansaj of Mahan Rishi Parashuram son of Rishi Jamadagni.
Lord Parshuram is considered as the ‘Avesha Avtar’ of Lord Vishnu. He was born at Renuka Tirth as the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. His father, Jamadagni, a great Saint Bhargva was a direct descendant of Lord Brahama. Renuka the wife of Rishi Jmadagni and mother of Lord Parashuram gave birth to four sons before him.
Mahan Rishi Parashurama destroyed completely the miscreant Kashtirya 21 times from earth as he had seen 21 cut on his father body.

      Regards
      Er. Karam

Hello Ramanan Sir, I am a “bhumihar bramhan” from district – muzaffarpur (bihar), Savarniya Gotra. But dont know about pravar, sutra and shakha and our kuldevi is “Bamat Gosain” or “Bamat Mata” ! Can u help me in getting more details about our kuldevi & her beej mantra along with our pravar, sutra and shakha.

    Thank you.
    Santosh Kumar

    1. saavarna, saavarni, saavarniya all appears derived from savarna named sage. if saavarniya is same as saavarni, the pravaras are Bhargava, Vaitahavya and Saavedasa. there are two more gotras with same pravaras Vadula and Yaska.

      1. the names of pravaras mostly are not the exact name of sage. in sanskrit in order to mention descendants of rishi, there is slight variation of the original rishi name because of sanskrit grammar. If Brhigu is the original rishi, all his discendants are called Bhargava. Similarily if veethahavya is the name of original rishi all the descendants of veethahavya are mentioned as vaithahavya. If you go by the rish names in Vedas, they always carry in the end the name of another rishi as surname indicating whose porgeny they belong to. (except the original saptharishis and few other rishis like vamadeva etc.) In vedic period the rishis always used to go by a surname of their ancestor unlike the present surnames. On close scrutiny of Vedas and the sages who originated the various Riks, I found names of the rishis carrying their ancestor rishi name in the end. (This system not applicable to the original rishis) For example : a rishi name : Medhathithi kaanwah , Medathithi is the originator of the rik and his ancestoral rishi Kanwa. Likewise one of the pravaras in the above three Gotras, Vadula, Saavarni and Yaska, is Veethahavya. There is a rik in rigveda by his descendant rishi named : Aruno Vaithahavyah. The descendant may be under putra poutra parampara or sishya prashishya parampara. Can not be decided. In those vedic years there is no such classification based on caste. All those who obtained Brahma Vidya belong to same Sage descendant under whom they learnt it. The sages used to teach Brhma vidya both to their sons and sishyas alike. An interesting aspect I found in brahmin pravaras or gotras is that there is no distinction between North Indian or South Indian. It appears to me there was many migrations from north to south and vice versa. Here this Vadula, Yaska and Saavarni gotras are found both in south and north brahmin communities and also very widely. There is also a scope some rishis carrying same name (just like in present world) and also carrying a similar name akin to Devatas name (exactly simlar way what we carry some gods names now).

      2. Natarajan Iyer's avatar
        Natarajan Iyer

Brahma Vidya can never be taught.
It is experienced. Brahman is the Supreme Soul, the highest Truth.
        It can only be experienced.

Next, about Gothras, yes guru-sishya parampara might have existed as a gothra system but there were multiple reasons and methods adopted in that system. Similar to today’s cities and pin-code.

But the moment we say gotra, it is ANCESTRAL.

Pravaras refer to the great ones in that line. Similar to exotic fruits on a particular tree whose originating seed is that of another tree.

So it is that ancestral worship is followed by all in Hinduism.

From the ONE GOD, this entire creation branches out, in the same method, ONE GENERATION FROM THE PREVIOUS GENERATION.

However it is today a pathetic situation when society has degraded from worshipping parents to kicking them. But that is the fate of kali yugam where evil is born and evil is nurtured and the path is paved for evil souls to descend and exhaust their merit, their parents experiencing the result of their past evil karma and so on and so forth, the universe has a self-calculating mechanism of plus and minus.

But that law of nature is a huge topic altogether.

Gothram refers to ancestral line. We should just refer to this simple definition.

If we start tearing it into pieces in the name of analysis, finally the only thing that would remain is confusion.

The vedic rules permit that people who do not know their Gotram can be accomodated in the KASHYAPA gotram.
