  • Do not Set Time To Balaji Thirupati My Pilgrimage

I have set for myself some rules for visiting Temples.

I do not go to temples regularly, for that matter, nor do I perform Pooja regularly at home.

I perform pooja/ visit temples when I feel the urge.

    Then I go all out.

    Lord Balaji.jpg
    Lord Venkateswara Tirupati original image

Pooja may extend upto three hours and at the beginning I would not be sure which Mantras or Pooja I shall perform.

    Similarly visiting temples.

I go when I feel like and choose temples ,generally more than 500 years old.

Nor do I list the temples and plan.

I start with one temple ,suggested by some body or one which is quite old.

As I visit the temple I get suggestions from strangers for the next temple.

    I proceed.

And I do not use private transport, car, special bus.

    I travel by public transport.

I leave by 5 30 am and return by 11 pm.

Food , I normally get offered mostly by temple archakas of the temples in their homes.

Otherwise I do not take food at all.

    I travel alone.

During the time between 1 and 4 pm ,when the temples are closed,I sleep in the temple premises.

This way I have been able to cover even 11 temples a day.

I have posted articles on all the temples visited.

My children make fun of these practices.

Their grouse is that I could plan better, stay in comfort.

    But I continue my practice.

I get good darshan despite my refusal to have darshan by making  payment for special darshan nor do use my contacts.

Exception to these practices are when I accompany my children to have the Grandchildren’s hair to be tonsured and for the their Ear Piercing ,Karna Bhushana in temples.

I do not like to use the term ‘ear boring’

In these cases, my children plan everything in advance and we cover the places in  car and stay in very comfortable and, in my opinion, costly rooms.

As a grandfather I keep the child in my lap for these ceremonies.

My children keep away unable to bear the child’s pain and cries.

This 26h and 267th(January) I had been to Thirupati to have my daughter’s second son’s hair tonsure.

My son in law was trying to get the best Darshan at Thirupati through his contacts who are vey influential.

My daughter,to be on the safer side, asked me to get darshan organised through my contacts.

All my sources informed me that they could have organised , had they been informed earlier.

I have a bitter experience of organising my Thirupati trip through my nephew .

The last trip I made to Thirupati was in 1989,when I my daughter was 6 years.

I have visited Thirupati, after 29 years, for her son’s hair tonsuring.

My nephew, sister’s son, organised my trip in 1989 through some of his very high level contacts in the Goverment.

When we left Chennai , he calculated a total of 10 hours for traveling to and fro to Thirupati and Darshan.

Six hours for traveling ,to and fro, four hours for climbing by walk and darshan.

I told him not to set time for God.

He laughed at me saying I was superstitious.

We reached Thirupathi and joined a special queue and we were informed that the darshan will be over in about half an hour.

And my nephew looked at me conveying how ridiculous my statement that one should not set time to God.

After five minutes or so, we were informed that the darshan may be delayed as some VIPs were expected.

And we were made to stand in thexsteel enclosure for….

17, seventeen hours before getting Balaji’s Darshan!

Me,with a six year old who has to eat, use toilet, and stuck up I. Iron brarricade unable to move out!

This time around,my son in law arranged for darshan for some special programme and told me that it would take about 3 hours to have Balaji Darshan.

I said fine but suggested that we conduct Kanyana Utsava for Balaji as I felt like doing it.

He told me that it was too late and that his contact could not change what he has arranged.

And my son in law wanted to know if he wanted  me to reschedule the programme.

I already have my experince of being made to stand in the queue in 1989 with a child of 6 years constantly asking me for food, for Toilet facilities when I had a tough time in managing.

So I told my son in law to leave the whole issue of Kalynanatosava to Lord Balaji.

If He wants me to perform it,HE shall have it done.

Or it means He has not given me permission.

We went to Thirupati and as we were about to leave for Darshan from the room,my son in law got a call from his contact that the special darshan he has planned for us has been canceled and we were being allotted special Kalyana Utsava of Lord Balaji!

We had good darshan and I could get a whole of 4 minutes to see Him!

The name of the cottage allted to us was ‘ venkata vijayam’, visit of Venkata, name of Lord Balaji,Venkata Ramana.

The name of the Care Taker of the cottage..

    Ramana.

    My name is Venkata Ramanan.

  • Tirupati Balaji Rings Bells Grants Permission 1979

The Tirumala Tirupathi Temple of Lord Balaji had to be closed down in November 1979.

Lotus feet of Lord Venkateswara,Balaji, Tirupati.Imge.jpg
Lotus feet of Lord Venkateswara,Balaji, Tirupati.

The Executive officer,PVRK Prasad mulled over this decision.

    Then ,

Finally, after every member of his staff left his chambers,a lonely PVRK Prasad stood up in his place and silently offered his prayers to Lord Sri Venkateswara..

“..Swamy Sri Venkateswara,as Your humble servant I have always done my best for You and for Your devotees..

Then why these hurdles for me and what is this ordeal..??..

I now need Your guidance and approval immediately..

    Please offer..”..

During that thick dark hour on the mid night of 7th, November, 1979…

Just a few hours before the commencement of the holy Varuna Japam..

The heavy Bronze bells, hanging in front of the principle deity of Lord Sri Venkateswara, started ringing on their own..

Thus signalling the holy Lord Sri Venkateswara’s much awaited permission and HIS most wanted approval for the Varuna Japam..

That was an amazingly mind-blowing miracle of Lord Sri Venkateswara very difficult for the humanity to understand..

    PVRK Prasad was speechless..

This truly amazing miracle occurred,in the holy temple of Tirumala,on the mid night of 7th November,1979

At that time, right from a street urchin to the holy Lord, the whole of Tirumala was in a very deep sleep…All the otherwise busy streets of the holy temple town were wearinga vacant look..

Except an occasional sound here and there, the whole of the Tirumala hill shrine wasfilled with absolute silence..

And exactly during that dark hour…

    Breaking all the silence…

This miracle occurred and occurred quite suddenly taking the entire hill shrine of Tirumala by surprise.

    Thong…Thonggg…Thonggggg..

The huge Bronze bells, that were hanging in front of the principal deity of Lord Sri Venkatewsara in the holy Bangaru Vaakili (Sanctum Sanctorum) of the Tirumala Tirupati temple started ringing on their own.without anyone touching them, sending waves of heavy metal sound across the whole of the Tirumala hill shrine.

The security staff, the police, the pilgrims, the officials, the temple staff, the Archaks and the Purohits, who were shocked by the huge sound of the Bronze bells, woke up startled and came running to the main Temple.

They all stood there, outside the temple, watching in utter shock and disbelief, unable to know  “..how the huge bronze bells – hanging in the heavily guarded and fully locked up Bangaru Vaakili (Sanctum Sanctorum) – could ring on their own, without any one touching them..??..”

Shocking them further, the bells rang in that fashion for a few more minutes and later stopped on their ownIt was a dream state for all those gathered therean unbelievably true state.

    Mysterious..Miraculous..And absolutely fantastic..

Later, for three full days, amidst chanting of the Vedic hymns, the holy Varuna Japam was performed strictly according to the Vedas and strictly according to the instructions given by the noble Sri Uppuluri Ganapati Sastry..

After that, once all the rituals of the Varuna Japam were completed on the third and final day,it was supposed to rain immediately..

But there were still no signs of any rain from any corner..

After the final rituals, carrying the Ceremonial Deities in their hands, all the Rithviks were returning to the main temple..

PVRK Prasad, the special invitees, the engineers, the board officials, the visitors, the pilgrims, the security staff, members from the press were also silently following them..

There was an utter disappointment in everyone’s face..

“Except tear drops in our eyes, there’s not a drop of rain anywhere nearby..” someone from the press commented..

    And then it happened..

    Perhaps the biggest miracle…

All of them were very silently walking back towards the main temple and were still hundred paces away from the actual destination..

Before they could realize and before they could run for their shelter..

    Making a huge thunderous noise…

    The skies opened up…

And it started raining heavily..Very heavily indeed..

An unbelievable sight… Seen to be believed..

None of them was carrying an umbrella and before they could all run into the main temple for shelter, they were fully drenched in rain..

    Joy.. Ecstasy.. Surprise.. Disbelief..

    Background.

Greatly disturbed by the acute water crisis,P V R K Prasad, the Executive Officer of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam Board called for an emergency meeting of his executive staff to discuss about the various measures that need to be taken to combat the on going water crisis on the holy Tirumala hill…

He had a marathon discussion with all his water board engineers.

Those engineers not only pleaded complete helplessness but also warned theirExecutive Officer, saying “Sir,the tanks and reservoirs on the Tirumala hill shrine have very little water reserves now..They can only be served for a few more days and not any more…”

At length they discussed about various other options to withstand the water crisis for a few more days..Every one suggested..”..more sanctions be imposed on the consumption of water on the holy hill shrine..”

In those days,in addition to the twenty five thousand visitors per day,the holy Tirumala temple town had about six thousand population living there..Water sanctions were already being imposed to the maximum level and any further sanctions will only paralyze the human life there…

    So no further sanctions…

    Then,what..???

Someone suggested to put a restriction on the number of daily pilgrims visiting the holy Tirumala hill shrine…

At that point, the Executive Officer said..”most of the pilgrims who visit Tirumala, plan their visit months in advance..It would be cruel on our part to stop them now..”

“..Secondly,there is no such legislation in TTD books to prevent any devotee of Lord Sri Venkateswara from visiting His holy hill shrine…Even otherwise,we are here to serve His devotees but not to put restrictions on their visits..”…

    He concluded the meeting…

Later Sri Sastry identified a few Rithviks and instructed them to go to Tirumala to perform the holy Varuna Japam.

After doing all the astrological calculations, PVRK Prasad decided to conduct the Varuna Japam on 1, November,1979…

But unfortunately the Rithviks, who were to conduct the Varuna Japam, could not come on time to Tirumala..

    And as a result..

The Varuna Japam was indefinitely postponed

A couple of days have passed…

In the mean time the water crisis,on the holy Tirumala hill, deepened further..Pleading total helplessness, the engineers of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam board told PVRK Prasad…

“Sir…it is going to be impossible for us to supply water to the pilgrims for more than a week now ..”…”And if that happens sir..”,they warned…

“The holy temple town of Tirumala Tirupati has to be indefinitely closed down..”

And in such case of an indefinite closure then PVRK Prasad,as the official head of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam board, would go down in the history of TTD as it’s most unpopular Executive Officer…

With a blazing Sun rocking the holy temple town of Tirumala and with no signs of any clouds anywhere nearby,PVRK Prasad was a disturbed man..

Then go to the beginning of this article.

  • Rare Information Tirupati Lord Balaji

Some rare facts about Tirupati ,Tirumala and Lord Venkateswara

( Some portions of this post needs citation especially on the days when Lord Balaji is worshiped as Ambal and Shiva(marked with an *). People who are in Tirupati or those who have authentic sources may send me information, One of the Links mention that the Balaji Temple is that of Siva. There are other sources that say it is of Lord Muruga ,Ambal.I have a detailed post on this.People may contribute to this as well.)

1.The Arch at the entrance of Tirumala Hills is unique in the world.

    Balaji Face in Hills
Lord Balaji‘s Face in the Hills

Natural Arch, Tirumala hills is a distinctive geological wonder located 1 km (0.6 mi) North of the Tirumala hills temple, near the Chakra Teertham in the state of Andhra PradeshIndia. The Arch is also called Silathoranam (శిలాతోరణం)in local language (Telugu language: “Sila” means ‘rock’ and “thoranam” means a garland strung over a threshold, connecting two vertical columns or an ‘arch’ as in this case). The arch measures 8 m (26.2 ft) in width and 3 m (9.8 ft) in height, and is naturally formed in the quartzites of Cuddapah Supergroup of Middle to Upper Proterozoic (1600 to 570 Ma) due to natural erosive forces.[1][2][3]

The arch is one of the few natural arches or bridges in Asia. But there are many others in other continents, such as the Rainbow Bridge (Arch) andArches National Park in UtahUSA which depicts 2000 sandstone arches, the Durdle Door arch in Dorset and the Arch of Cut Through in UK, Pravčická brána in Bohemian Switzerland, in Czech RepublicPont d’Arc in Southern France, Rainbow cave arch in the Galilee IsraelEl Arco de Cabo San Lucasin Mexico and London Arch in Australia(wiki)

2.The Idol of Balaji is adorned with ‘Pachai Karpooram’, from Cinnamomum camphora, which is a highly volatile substance, daily.

If applied to a stone, it will form Cracks.

But not so in Lord Balaji’s case.

3.There is no mark of the Chisel in the Idol.

4.The Idol is always at 110 Degree F, despite being bathed in Water, Milk at the early hours, 4.30am.

After bathing the Deity Sweat forms every day and it is wiped off.

5.Lord Balaji is worshiped as Goddess Uma (Ambal) on four days , as Vishnu for two days and Shiva as One day in a week.

Bilva Leaves, a must for worship of Lord Siva are used during archana (worship by various names of the Lord) to  Lord Balaji on all Fridays. Similarly the same Bilva leaves are used during archanas in the month of Marghazhi.( 15th Dec. to 15 Jan).

“AmbAL Amsa are seen on Lord VenkateshvarA’s image, in the Simha LalATam, Yoga
MudrA, Bhoga MudrA, Varada MudrA, Kattiya Vilambita MudrA, the meTTi, kolusu,
    taNDai
(toe-rings and anklet) on the feet. All these are the marks of Sri
AlarmElu Mangai. The Kattiya Vilambita Hastam belongs only to AmbAL, not to
VishNu. The Vilambita Hasta MudrA can be seen on the images of Kanchi Kamakshi,
TiruvidaiMarudur Mookambika, Kanyakumari Bhagavati Amman, Tiruvaiyaru
Dharmasamvardini, and Mayiladuturai Mookambikai. The image of Bhagavati Amman on
the banks of the BharatapapuzhA river, Kerala, has an exact resemblance of Lord
    VenkateshvarA.

No one can deny or hide these female AMsas on the Lord’s
body. We can see them with our own eyes. Certain pujas too resemble those done
in AmbAL temples. To VenkateshvarA, abhiShekam is done on Fridays, a
21-cubit sari vastram, abhiShekam with turmeric water, and
Brahmotsava during Navaratri are conducted. The abhiShekam is done by
pouring out water in a measure of 51 porringers. The number 51 refers to the
    count of Shakti PiThas.

Every Friday, bilva leaves, which belong to
Shiva, are used for Archana. Now it is used in the Archana done in Margazhi
    month.

On the day of ShivarAtri, an utsavam called kShetra PAlikA
is done. On that day, the utsava mUrti is adorned with diamond streaks of
VibhUti and the deity is taken on the streets on procession.

    *The Tirumala
temple is an EkamUrti Alayam. There is no Sannidhi for any other deity. But then
there is a woman deity known as Tirupati GangammA. The festival called GangammA
JAtra is held once in a year. In those days, goats and chicken were sacrified
during this time. This Gangamma is a ShivagaNa, Yogini.

    There is also an
aitihyam (legendary account) that during the abhiShekam, the Lord
opens his third eye. In those days, the ArchakAs agreed with this
    belief.

The VishNu image at Srirangam has a streak resembling a beam of
light on its forehead, which is the general identity seen in ancient VishNu
images. On the sacred body of the Lord of Tirupati or his miniature image, there
is no such mark. The broad nAmam was fixed up only since the last 150 or
    200 years.

As against the VishNu SahasranAmam chanted at Archana in other
VishNu temples, only the Venkatesha SahasranAmam is chanted here. The first line
of this composition is VenkateshAya namaH and the next line is VirUpAkShAya
    namaH. VirUpAkShA is Shiva’s name.

Lord Venkateshvara is adored in the
Shaiva Tirumurais and in Tirumandiram. A sage-poet named TALLapAkkam AnnamaiyyA
adored the Lord in his songs as ParaBrahmam and the Ishvara with ShivAMsam and
wrote his songs on copper plates. Around 350 years ago, some ArchakAs who did
not appreciate it, melted those plates and made them into copper vessles and
    plates.”

On Maha Sivaratri day which is considered sacred for the worship of Lord Siva a festival called Kshetra Palika is celebrated at Tirupati. On that day the Urchava Idol  is decorated with a flat diamond studded ornament resembling the three streaks of vibhuthi  (sacred ash applied on foreheads in three lines by worshipers  of Lord Siva) and taken out in procession on the streets.

6.The Tirumala ranges show the face of Lord Balaji.

7.The Suprabhataham, the chantimg to wake up the Lord is not played in the temple during the month of Margazhi.( Dec-January) as He never sleeps.

    I have a doubt.

If this is so, why the Suprabatham is played in the early mornings in the other months?
