  • Ramadan Sight The Moon When Sun Does Not Set

I have been intrigued s to ow the Moon is sighted by The Muslims for Fasting during the Month of Ramadan, .

    I checked up.

    It seems a bit complicated.

I am quoting from sources which seem authentic .

**To further clarify this topic watch – Moon Sighting: a clarification here**

The issue of moon sighting has never been as divisive as it has become today. In the past, Muslim scholars agreed on a certain method to decide the start and end of the month of Ramadan. In the last few years, advancements in communications and media have turned the world into a small village creating a new context where matters concerning inter-countries relations are involved. A second new context may also be related to the presence of many Muslims in countries that lack one single Muslim authority. Resultantly, readily understood issues related to a number of Islamic rituals have now become controversial and confusing. This confusion is further fuelled by the influence of a Western lifestyle upon Muslims; generally speaking, Muslims are often accused of being anti-Western or even unscientific in their spheres of life. This can influence them to react emotionally and unreasonably. One such observable sphere in which many Muslims have reacted in this manner is with regard to moon-sighting and the establishment of the start of the month of Ramadan, ‘Id al-Fitr and ‘Id al–Adha.

    Moon Sighting in Islam.
    Moon Sighting in Islam.

In this article, I would like to draw attention to specific principles in an attempt to remove misconceptions surrounding the ongoing debate.

Shari’ah Principles related to the confirmation of the beginning of Ramadan and the ’Id

I believe many readers will be aware of these principles yet some of them may not be aware of specific fundamental issues within them. In order to gain a deeper understanding we have to differentiate between the principles used by those in authority in any Muslim community including the Muslim nation [ummah] under the Caliph [khalifah] or other leaders in his absence, and the principles used by ordinary Muslims.

    Leaders or those in charge are commanded to employ one of two principles. The first is to sight the moon with the eye. The basis for this doctrine is numerous Prophetic traditions [ahadith]; Abu Hurayrah relates that the Prophet, may Allah praise and send peace and blessings upon him, said, ‘Fast when you see it (i.e., the moon) and cease fasting when you see it, and if it is hidden or cloudy, complete the counting of Sha’ban as thirty days.’ This hadith is agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim; similar authentic ahadith are also recorded. The second principle applies only in the absence of the first, which is to complete thirty days for the month of Sha’ban. The basis for this is also the previous hadith and many other similar statements. It is worth noting that the overwhelming majority of scholars unanimously agreed upon using these two principles. {quotes}Furthermore, it has been stated by a number of scholars that the overwhelming majority of scholars also agreed not to consider astronomy or calculations as a tool to confirm the beginning of Ramadan or ’Id.{/quotes}

Scholars who quoted this consensus include al-Jassas al–Hanafi1, al-Baji al-Maliki2 Ibn Rushd al-Maliki3, al-Subki al-Shafi’i4, Ibn Taymiyyah5, Ibn ‘Abidin Al-Hanafi6 and others. They added that the effective cause [‘illah, ratio legis] for confirming these events is the visual sighting of the moon or the completion of the month of Sha’ban. This means that the only basis for fasting is one of these two principles.”

“Moonsighting.com calculates where moonsighting is possible for every month using the criteria, developed by Khalid Shaukat. Development of the criteria took decades of research using thousands of observations from different locations collected over a period of 170 years. These calculations “

How do Muslims in the Arctic sight the Moon when the Sun does not set?

The Atlantic has an interesting article on this.

As Hassan Ahmed, a Muslim resident who came to the city from Somalia and works at the Islamic Center of Northern Norway told me, “the sun doesn’t set. For 24 hours it’s in the middle of the sky.” Faced with the impossibility of adhering to the sunrise/sunset rule, Tromsø‘s Muslims must find alternative ways of determining when to fast. “We have a fatwa,” or clerical decree, Ahmed said. “We can correspond the fast to the closest Islamic country, or we can fast with Mecca.”

Sandra Maryam Moe, a Norwegian convert to Islam and manager of Tromsø’s community center and mosque, Alnor, echoed Ahmed’s statement: “since we have midnight sun during Ramadan this year, we’ve chosen to use the timetable for Mecca.” This means that if the sun rises in Mecca at 5:00 am, residents of Tromsø will begin the fast at 5 a.m. (Norwegian time). In addition to being a good symbolic choice, adhering to Mecca’s timetable, according to Moe, also provides a practical benefit: “they have very stable times for sunrise and sunset so that makes the prayers and the fasting quite balanced.”

So tonight at 7:07 — the time of the would-be-sunset — Muslims in Tromsø will gather at Alnor’s mosque, one of the northernmost in the world, and with the afternoon sun still shining through the windows, break the fast. Typically, this involves a combination of cuisines — from traditional dates to the rich, thick bread Norway is famous for. A nightly ritual during Ramadan, Moe says the gathering is very popular. “It’s full every night with people coming to join and break fast together and pray together. It’s a very social time throughout Ramadan.”

  • Nuns Sell Illegitimate Babies For Huge Profits,

    Vatican sells babies.
At an historic press conference yesterday, two groups fighting to end Catholic church terror against children formally joined forces and announced the launching of a public campaign commencing in Rome on September 20.
Francesco Zanardi of Rete L’Abuso and Kevin Annett of The International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State (ITCCS) disclosed their joint campaign to Italian reporters and activists at a morning press conference in the northern Italian city of Savona. Many members of the Italian press were present to receive the evidence, while the press conference was livestreamed via TeleGracia TV in 3 languages: Spanish, Italian and English.

Think of any crime, Vatican has done it.

Pedophilia , coerced conversions, Homo sexuality, Popes dying in the act of copulation Murder, bank frauds, laundering drug money ..

Now we have documented case involving  the Vatican where the Vatican force the Nuns(?) to part with their illegitimate babies, and sold them in the market for abnormal profits.

‘ By the Sin,Of the Sin,and for the Sin?’

    Story:

Ann Fessler who authored “The Girls Who Went Away: The Hidden History of Women Who Surrendered Children for Adoption in the Decades Before Roe V. Wade”  is, by nature, a multi-media artist, and like Celeste, Ann, was also an infant adopted during the Baby Scoop Era. Also like Celeste, Ann traveled around the country, finding and talking to the women who had been forced to give up their children to adoption during the Baby Scoop Era. For anyone who is going to have adoption in their lives, then this book is a must read for them to understand the very foundation from which modern adoption is built on.

Both Women are truly amazing to be around. Both The Mother’s Project and TGWWA are strong in a truthful message that adoption is not all what it seems. It’s not always a good thing at all and often, when you hear these stories, we have to admit that some things were very, very wrong.

The Baby Scoop Era Was a Dark Time for Adoption
Usually define as the period post WWII spanning until Roe vs. Wade, the Baby Scoop Era produced almost 5 million adoptees. Go to any adoption related event and you will see them all. It seems like everyone you meet is from 1964, or ’67, or ’68. Mothers, fathers and the now adult adoptees, sometimes, together, sometimes apart, but so many from the sixties alone; it’s remarkable.  One study reported that 1 of every 40 children under 18 years in the United States is adopted (Kreider, 2003)and the number of American domestic infant adoption birthmothers is somewhere around 10 million. Though officially over in the early seventies, I personally know Mother’s as late as 1980 and 1986 who were treated with true lack of choice and coercion, not unlike the mother’s of the defined Baby Scoop Era.

The Central theme in the BSE, is the use of shame, lies, and outright fraud used by most religious or charitable maternity homes of Post War America. Bottom line was that if you were a blue collar or above, white “nice” girl from the shiny new suburbs, and you got yourself pregnant, then either you were getting married real fast and might never live it down, or you went away. In 1970, for instance, 80 percent of the infants born to single mothers were placed for adoption and it’s not because these girls wanted to. It’s because, by the end of World War II, the adoption industry in America had all their ducks in a row. It was considered one’s “patriotic duty” to reproduce and create greater numbers of free American’s to combat the numbers born in communist Russia and China. The American dream was in full force, creating the suburban sprawl and the perfect family values we now hold dear. Coupled by war wounds and just general infertility as suffered by women, being “barren” and unable to produce the requisite 2.5 children was seen as a social flaw, but not openly addressed.

  • Atheists Theists All The Same. Study

A recent Study has found some interesting Facts on Atheists.

There seems to be some common factors between the theists and Atheists..

    The ten Commandments.
    The ten Commandments.

Both believe in some principles, the Atheist in the Principle That God does not exist or at least the principle that the Theists have to be resisted.

2.Theist Religions propagate, believe in Conversions-Hinduism is an exception.

    Atheist also do.

3.Christianity believes in mass meetings, Atheists do.

4.Islam, Christianity assert, that other than those who believe in Islam and Christianity are fools.

    Atheists do.

    5.Theists,religions have Symbols.

Atheists have been working under different symbols.

Now they have unveiled a new symbol.

‘Atheists unveiled the nation’s first public monument to secularism outside a county courthouse in Florida last week — a 1,500-pound gray granite bench engraved with quotations extolling the separation of church and state.”

6.Religions have sects, different schools of Thought.

    Atheist Monument.
Atheist Monument.,A monument erected by an atheists’ group drew Gael Murphy and a crowd of onlookers to a site near a Ten Commandments monument in Starke, Fla.
    By LAURIE GOODSTEIN.NYT.

Atheists also have, as a new study reveals.

    1. Intellectual Atheist/Agnostic. By far, the most common kind of non-believer, at nearly 38 percent. This group enjoys intellectual discourse, and while they’re often very certain about their beliefs, they’re not belligerent about it..

    2. This group also gets commonly accused of being dogmatic, but like the intellectual atheist, while they’re firm in their beliefs, they’re intellectually flexible and don’t prioritize attacking believers..

    3. Seeker-Agnostic. This group, which makes up 7.6 percent of non-believers, are unlikely to be as critical of religion as most other groups…

4.Anti-TheistThis group tends to get conflated with all atheists by believers, but they only constitute 15 percent of non-believers. Like the Intellectual Atheists, they like to argue about religion, but they are much more aggressive about it and actively seek out religious people in an effort to disabuse them of their beliefs…

5.Non-Theist. They don’t believe in any gods, but don’t think about those who do very often. In such a religious society, simply opting out of caring much about religion one way or another is nearly impossible, which is why this group is only 4.4 percent of non-believers. “A Non-Theist simply does not concern him or herself with religion,” researchers explain…

6.Ritual Atheist/Agnostic. While you might think the anti-theist is the non-believer type that scares Christians the most, it turns out that it may very well be the Ritual Atheist/Agnostic. This group, making up 12.5 percent of atheists, doesn’t really believe in the supernatural, but they do believe in the community aspects of their religious tradition enough to continue participating. ”

In general The Atheists have the same essential ingredients that make up a Religion, but under a different tag.

It may be of interest to note that Hinduism accepts Atheism as a Form of Worship, knowing pretty well that Human beings need something to cling onto.,call it whatever you like, be it No God!

  • Concept Of God In India Vedas Other Systems

    All In One, Virat Rupa

Hinduism and in India The concept of God is wide and varied.

Broadly speaking Indian Thought is classified into two groups.

    The Astika and The Nastika.

Astika (means who is devoted) Systems are those which believe in the authenticity of the Vedas and take them as the founding facts, Axioms, they are not questioned,

Under these categories come  The Vedas, containing Brahmnanas,Arnayakas Uoanishads, The Bhagavd Gita , Brahma Sutra.

Of these the Vedas, The Bhagavad Gita and the Brahma Sutra are called The Three Jewels, Ratna Traya.

These are unwavering in their adherence to The Vedas.

Puranas , signifying very old, are only supplementary to these.

If there are any conflicts between the Vedas and the Puranas, Views of the Vedas shall prevail.

The Vedas are called Sruthis, learnt by being heard, not written.

The others are called Smritis, learnt by memory, indicating historical events recorded and recollected..

Under these Astika System the Concept of God is not uniform.

While the Vedas and the others believe in the existence of God,Theistic the other Astika systems like Nyaya, Vaishesika  Samkhya and Purva Mimamsa are Atheistic, though all of  them accept the Vedas as the Authority.

So we have these  systems in the Astika group.

    Nyaya,

    Vaishesika,

    Samkhya,

    Mimasa(Purva Mimasa) and

    Uttara Mimasa, The Upanishads.

On the other hand we have the Nastika Sytems,( means denial of God) are those which do not believe in the authority of The Vedas.

    Under this we have,

    The Carvakas,

    Buddhism and

    Jainism.

While Buddhism and Jainism do not accept the authorit of The Vedas, they follow the Theory of Karma of the Vedas in a great detail.

While the Carvakas reject out right the Concept of God, Buddhism and Jainism are not as vehement in their  denial of  God.

The name and attributes of the God  are changed.

While decrying worship of idols(in fact this was one of their main grouse against Hinduism of The Vedas,) they ended up worshiping their Founders, The Buddha and Mahavira.

In the case of Mahavira, The Jainism go back to the previous births of Samkhya Muni and worship the Adi Mahavir.

Now lets us see what the Vedas and Upanishads say on the concept of God.

    The Vedas.

The Vedas contain the concepts of God as Non Dulaism, Qualified Non Dualism, Dualism_Advaita, Visistsadvaita, and Dvaita.

    Apart from this, we have,

    Polytheism,(worship of many deities).

    Monotheis(worship of One God)

Henotheism where on God is praised at the cost of another.

Under Polyheism/Henotheism, we have Varuna, Agni,Vayu,Aditya Maruts Indra Yama,Kubera, Vaiswanara,Prithv,i Brahma , Vishnu, Rudra, Ganapathy Skanda, Saraswarthy, Lakshmi as Sri.

Of we these, we find Brahma , Vishnu and Rudra being elevated as the Three Supreme Gods.

Siva and Narayana, on the other hand are considered the direct manifestation of the Reality, Brahman, along with Uma.

To simplify the method of worship and to avoid confusion Sankaracharya  groupe six as Shanmathas(Six Systems)

    They are ,

    Ganapathyam (Ganapathy)

    Saumaram (Surya, The Sun)

    Kaumaram (Skanda, Subramanya)

    Saivam, Sakthi (Parvati,Uma) and

    Vaishnavam(Vishnu).

The other deities may be worshiped on individual fancies, but these remain the Main Deities.

As society developed ther have been additions and continuation of tribal worship as well.

Under this, we have Village deities, which are responsible for the welfare of the Village,(Sastha, Mariamman worship come under this)

Boundary Deities(Ellaichamy)-Karuppannasamy worship comes under this.

We also have Forest Deities, Vana Durga.

Mountain deities, Muruga, an avatra of Skanda

In addition we have family deities which a family worships by custom.

All these myriad of deities come under the the three main Deities along with Uma, Parvati.

However the Supreme priciple of the Vedas is that Reality Brahman has no attribute, nameless, Formless.

This is called Nirguna, with out attributes.

People can find, in important Stothras, Nirgana Aaradhana and Saguna Aradhana.

We have the Narayana Suktham is a Nirguna Aradhana, Vishnu Sooktham is Saguna Aradhana.

In Sri Lalitha Sahasranama, one finds Nirguna and Saguna Stuthis.

And in Attribute-less worship one can find Non dualism,Qualified Non dualism and Dualism.

It is astonishing to find that all individual views are taken into consideration and are synthesized in the concept of Reality.

Even Atheism is taken into consideration and the Atheists were not ostracized or ignored.

This is the greatness of the Indian Thought, that none can arrogate only  themselves to knowledge.

  • Ambedkar Untouchability Meat Beef Eating

Having failed to find a common factor to define Untouchables and how to expalin the phenomena of the down trodden and the ostracized( I will deal with Ostracism when I discuss how the so-called Caste system and intermarriages, Taboos and criminality), the apologists tried to locate a factor.

They found, nay seemingly found, what they were searching for..

    Meat eating and Beef eating,!

Ambedkar, who is reputed to have written the Constitutions of India single handedly- forget about the  facts below,

“On the 14 August 1947 meeting of the Assembly, a proposal for forming various committees was presented.[9] Such committees included a Committee on Fundamental Rights, the Union Powers Committee and Union Constitution Committee. On 29 August 1947, the Drafting Committee was appointed, with Dr B. R. Ambedkar as the Chairman along with six other members assisted by a constitutional advisor. These members were Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi (K M Munshi, Ex- Home Minister, Bombay), Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer (Ex- Advocate General, Madras State),N Gopalaswami Ayengar (Ex-Prime Minister, J&K and later member of Nehru Cabinet), B L Mitter (Ex-Advocate General, India), Md. Saadullah (Ex- Chief Minister of Assam, Muslim League member) and D P Khaitan (Scion of Khaitan Business family and a renowned lawyer). The constitutional advisor was Sir Benegal Narsing Rau (who became First Indian Judge in International Court of Justice, 1950–54). Later B L Mitter resigned and was replaced by Madhav Rao (Legal Advisor of Maharaja of Vadodara). Owing to death of D P Khaitan, T T Krishnamachari was chosen to be included in the drafting committee. A Draft Constitution was prepared by the committee and submitted to the Assembly on 4 November 1947. Draft constitution was debated and over 2000 amendments were moved over a period of two years. Finally on 26 Nov. 1949, the process was completed and Constituent assembly adopted the constitution. 284 members signed the document and the process of constitution making was complete'(wiki)

    Ambedkar Writings and Speeches.
What is the cause of the nausea which the Hindus have against beef-eating? Were the Hindus always opposed to beef-eating? If not, why did they develop such nausea against it? Were the Untouchables given to beef-eating from the very start? Why did they not give up beef-eating when it was abandoned by the Hindus? Were the Untouchables always Untouchables? Why should beef-eating give rise to Untouchability at a later stage? If the Hindus were eating beef, when did they give it up? These questions impinge on our understanding of the Jhajjar killings. Ambedkar sought some answers in 1948.

had hunted texts to find Meat eating/Beef eating as the criteria and his findings are as under…

“In the first place, we have the fact that the Untouchables or the main communities which compose them eat the dead cow and those who eat the dead cow are tainted with untouchability and no others..”

There is really no necessity to enter upon any speculation as to whether beef-eating was or was not the principal reason for the rise of Untouchability. This new theory receives support from the Hindu Shastras. The Veda Vyas Smriti contains the following verse which specifies the communities which are included in the category of Antyajas and the reasons why they were so included

L.12-13 “The Charmakars (Cobbler), the Bhatta (Soldier), the Bhilla, the Rajaka (washerman), the Puskara, the Nata (actor), the Vrata, the Meda, the Chandala, the Dasa, the Svapaka, and the Kolika- these are known as Antyajas as well as others who eat cow’s flesh.”

This statement is correct but does not prove that untouchability originated because of this- a wrong conclusion.

Eating of Cow meat and beef eating is mentioned in the Rig Veda .

Eating Cow’s Meat is prohibited in the Rig Veda,

    But Satapatha Brahmana  says otherwise..

To give only one instance. Among the Kamyashtis set forth in the Taittiriya Bramhana, not only the sacrifice of oxen and cows are laid down, but we are even told what kind and description of oxen and cows are to be offered to what deities. Thus, a dwarf ox is to be chosen for sacrifice to Vishnu; a drooping horned bull with a blaze on the forehead to Indra as the destroyer of Vritra; a black cow to Pushan; a red cow to Rudra; and so on. The Taittiriya Bramhana notes another sacrifice called Panchasaradiya-seva, the most important element of which was the immolation of seventeen five-year old humpless, dwraf-bulls, and as many dwarf heifers under three year-old.….

…The killing of cow for the guest had grown to such an extent that the guest came to be called ‘Go-ghna’ which means the killer of the cow. To avoid this slaughter of the cows the Ashvateyana Grahya Sutra (1.24.25) suggests that the cow should be let loose when the guest comes so as to escape the rule of etiquette….

There fore, the eating of Cow’s meat and prohibition against eating,  both were in place.

Hence there seems to have been no reason for both the groups to practice untouchability as both had their adherents already and there was no need to classify on group anew as such.

Notwithstanding this Logic, Ambedkar goes on to build a case as to why Brahmins gave up eating meat, how Kshatriyas followed suit.

Another hilarious fact is that  Brahmins gave up meat-eating because they watned to regain Supremacy from the Buddha Bhiksus”

‘That the object of the Brahmins in giving up beef-eating was to snatch away from the Buddhist Bhikshus the supremacy they had acquired is evidenced by the adoption of vegetarianism by Brahmins. Why did the Brahmins become vegetarian? The answer is that without becoming vegetarian the Brahmins could not have recovered the ground they had lost to their rival namely Buddhism. In this connection it must be remembered that there was one aspect in which Brahmanism suffered in public esteem as compared to Buddhism. That was the practice of animal sacrifice which was the essence of Brahmanism and to which Buddhism was deadly opposed. That in an agricultural population there should be respect for Buddhism and revulsion against Brahmanism which involved slaughter of animals including cows and bullocks is only natural. What could the Brahmins do to recover the lost ground? To go one better than the Buddhist Bhikshus not only to give up meat-eating but to become vegetarians- which they did. That this was the object of the Brahmins in becoming vegetarians can be proved in various ways.”

    Ambedkar got the facts wrong.

When was Buddhism Founded and who was Siddhartha?

The Kshtriya Prince was later known as The Buddha, having renounced his family, Kingdom and attaining Nirvana.

I believe this was later to Krishna, let alone Vyasa, Rama and the Vedas

Lord Rama, being a Kshatriya ate Meat,

In the Sundara Kanda, the 36th sarga, the 41st sloka describes how Hanuman tells Sita, ” When you were away, Sri Rama refrained from eating deer meat.”

If a man wishes that a son should be born to him who will be a famous scholar, frequenting assemblies and speaking delightful words, a student of all the Vedas and an enjoyer of the full term of life, he should have rice cooked with the meat of a young bull or of one more advanced in years and he and his wife should eat it with clarified butter. Then they should be able to beget such a son. -Brhadaranyaka Upanishad 6.4.18″

Surely God is above a Brahmin?

Sage Agasthya ate not only meat but even digested Vatapi , an Asura and exclaimed ‘Vatapi, Jeerno Bhava”

Vasishta ate meat and in fact Saptha Rishis from Kasyapa ate Meat.

They were not ostracized, they are worshiped.

Meat eating by humans has been in existence and none can deny the fact.

But those who are wanted to evolve spiritually or the Spiritually  evolved, found that Meat eating is a hindrance to self-realization in terms of disturbing concentration and Dispositions.

So, they gave up and propagated the idea of shunning Meat and especially Cow; Meat as they used Cow’s products for their livelihood.

In fact the Chamaka Prasna specifically prays Lord Rudra for Cows!

So they gave up meat-eating and beef eating later.

The argument that Caste/Untouchability sprang from Meat”Beef eating is erroneous.

How did it come into being then?
