  • Four Of The Saptha,Seven Rishis From South Of India

There are Seven Seers of Hinduism called as Saptha (seven) Rishis.

According to Puranas, these change for every Manvantara,a Time scale of Hinduism going back to lakhs of years.

For more read my article on Manvatara.

The Saptha Rishis for our Manvantara are,

    Atri,

    Bhrigu,

    Kutsa,

    Vasishta,

    Gautama,

    Kasyapa and

    Angirasa.

It is interesting to note that references to these Rishis are associated with certain regions of the world, though all of them are from Bharatavarsha.

    Of these,while,

Bhrighu from Himachal Pradesh,Kutsa from near Uttar Pradesh,Vasishta from Indus valley,Atri,Kasyapa and Gautama and Angirasa are from the south of Vindhyas.

It is also curious that the Bhargavas, those from Bhrighu Lineage, to which Parashurama,an Avatar of Vishnu, are sometimes treated as those from the south, with Parashurama establishing Goa and Kerala regions of today.

Kasyapa is the earliest and his name means Turtle.

The Turtle concept  is present in almost all lehends related to Creation of Earth.

Kasyapa must have lived in the south ,though he is reported to have come to south twice .

Once when the earth was tilted during Shiva,s Marriage with Uma and again during Ramayna whe he came down to Lanka to impart The Adityahridhaya Stotra on Surya, the Sun God,to Lord Rama, when he was depressed during his battle with Ravana in Lanka.

Agastya’s movement has been validated by the Star Canopus.

Please read my article on this.

Sage Gauthama was from the Godavari basin/valley,the River Godavari is named after him.

Bhrighu and Angirasa are classified as pre Vedic Rishis.

Though they are referred thus and are mentioned in The Zend Avestha of Zoraosterianism,Angirasa ,going by Sumerian and Tamil related material was from the Dravida desa and he seems to have founded the Akkadian empire or worshiped by them.

  • Which Gotra Is Superior?

My article Difference ‘Between Viswamitra Kaushika Gotras Why No Bharata’ is being read widely and there have been comments on it, most of them thanking me for clarifying the issue.

There are some comments which differ from the others.

I am replying for some relevant ,in my opinion important comments.

One of them states that I should refrain from writing articles on this subject as the definition and explanation of Brahma Rishis is not clear.

    I quote,

I belong to KAUSHIKA GOTHRA. I still doubt about the concept of BRAHMARISI. Even Sage Vashista as per Mahabharatha is different from BRAHMARISHI VASHISTA.. It is better not to write articles on this for the following reasons. It is a well known fact the PROGENITOR OF BOTH VISWAMITHRA AND KAUSHIKA GOTHRAS is SAGE KUSHIKA –A MANASA PUTHRA OF BRAHMA. hen how can be descendents of KUSHIKA NOT BE CALLED AS BRAHMARISHIS. Further sage Kaushika is one of the five rishis eligible to givE DEEKSHA IN SIVAGAMAS and ne of the FIVE GOTHRAS NOMINATED FOR ACHARYASTHANA. There are different versions about GADHI–THE BRAHMA RAJAN OF KUSHIKA GOTHRAS. As per DEVI MAHATMAYAM he is son of SAGE KATHA OF KUSHIKA LINEAGE and he is mentioned as KADI BROTHER OF KAUSHIKI WHO BECAME A RIVER. Further GODDESS PARVATHI WAS BORN AS A DAUGHTER TO SGE KATHA AS KATHYAYINI. And there is also anoter sage KATHYAYANA son of KATHA RISHI the famous author of KATHYAYANA SUTRA. It is only from RAMAYANA the story of VISWAMITHRA BEGINS. Here the son of KATHA SAGE is mentioned as GADHI AND NOT KATHI. Further the descendents of SAGE KUSHIKA did not want o become purohits and performed RAJAYA DUTIES. They are not born KSHATRIYAS since they did not belong to five clans of KSHATRIYAS–BRAHMA/NAGA/SURYA/SOMA/AGNI VAMSAS. Hence to consider all descendents of KAUSHIKA is incorrect bu they were only Brahmins performing Rjanya duties. Let us restrict ourselves about VIWAMITHRA’S CONTRIBUTION and need not go about whether he is a KSHATRIYA OR NOT’

1.I shall continue writing about what I find in the Sruthi and Smriti.

    Saptha Rishis.jpg Saptha Rishis.

    I present facts.

If some one has a different view they are welcome to post their comments with authentic source/Links.

If they are authentic, I shall write on the subject with my views, with corrections over my earlier view.

I am of the opinion that Knowledge , especially in Hinduism , is an open source.

So long as the information does not run contradictory to Sruthi, It has to be taken as final .

    And this is my view.

I shall be writing on Brahma Rishis in detail.

There seems to be some apprehension in some quarters that the origin of the rishis might reflect on the descendants present social standing.

This is not warranted if one understands that lineage is determined by disposition and Character and not birth as a matter of right.

This is probably the reason for the proverb in Tamil that states that one should not look deeply into the origin of Rishis and rivers for in both the cases the origins may not be worth to begin with.

A Sage like Viswamitra was not recognised among the Rishis when he was a powerful King as Kaushika.

But once he became a Brahma Rishi he was venerated to the extent that his Gayatri Mantra has been the most elevated Status in Hinduism, notwithstanding his origin.

There was another comment which is connected to this comment, though it may not appear so, is

    ‘Which Gotra is superior?’

If we take the Puranas as the authority all the Puranas name Kashyapa.

We can not really say Kasyapa gotra is superior to all the other  Gotras, because,

Sage Bharatwaja, Atri and Sikleetha were described as the father of Mahalakshmi at different times.

Then there are the Saptha Rishis.

They are eternal and their composition changes Manvantara to Manvantara.

So  they have to be given the utmost respect.

The message is not to look for the origins of the Rishis and engage oneself in debates as to which Gotra is superior, but to follow the Path given by the Rishi assigned to each Family and adhere to the appropriate Sutras.

  • Thanksgiving Rishi Panchami

India is land of Rishis, Seers who were not only the people with a deep bent of spirituality but also social reformers and Law givers.

There are seven great Rishis though there are many more,

These are called Saptha Rishis (Seven Rishis).

These seven for the present Kali Yuga are,

    Atri, Bhrigu,Kuthsa,Vasihsta,Gauthama,Kasyapa and Angirasa.

They are represented in the Great bear Constellation.

Please read my post Rishis a Timeline.

They have given great mantras for the society and set standards of behavior , selfless in their discharging their duties with a fair sense of Justice.

To commemorate their memory Rishi Panchami is celebrated.

    Rishi Panchami.jpg.
    Rishi Panhami Celebration.

This falls on the next day after Ganesh Chaturthi every year on Panchami.

This day is devoted vrata , Vow.

Women visit river or any water storage in the afternoon, take cow dung with them, clean their teeth with medicinal herbal stick, take cold-water bath.

They arrange the idol of Saptarshi on small wooden platform in the form of seven betenuts and perform pooja.

On this day they should eat only those fruits, which grow below the earth (soil) and strictly avoid eating any eatables, which are prepared from the grains grown from the toiling of bullocks.

‘Aghada’ is one such plant, which has many medicinal uses.

This is grown in Ashadha and Shravana months.

In Bhadrapada it becomes full-fledged and its medicinal instincts are prominently noticed in the same month.

The Jains regard this a very important day.

Among them, the followers of Shwetambar cult end their Parjushan Maha Parva on this day and the others following Digambar cult, start their Maha Parva from this day.

‘Rhushabhadeva’ was the first and the most sacred Teerthankar as per the Jains.

He is known as Aadinath also. ‘Rishi Panchami’ day is observed in the name of this Aadinath. The motive of such observance between the Hindus and the Jains is the same.
