    ROCKEFELLER

The first of the famous members of the Illuminati from this historic family is John D. Rockefeller, son of William Avery Rockefeller (1810-1906?). John D. Rockefeller is the one who brought mega power and wealth to the family. David Rockefeller, Sr. is a Bilderberg Group member and influential in the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and the Trilateral Commission. He was instrumental in the CFR’s Marshall Plan after WWII and influential at Chase Bank.

Rockefeller notables – Helped create and control the FBI and CIA. They control education and religion through their foundations. Key roles in the CFR. They pour money into projects working toward the One World Government. These famous members of the Illuminati have profound influence on U.S. Government policy.

The Rockefellers have a huge influence on the media, such as Time MagazineMcCall’s Magazine, and the New York Daily News. Their foundations support the environmental gGreen movement (a hidden agenda to strip the people of their freedoms and a basis for Illuminati families to own the world).

    ROTHSCHILD

Mayer Amschel Rothschild, from Frankfurt, Germany, sent his five sons to the major capitals of Europe. The five brothers set up a private courier service that was faster than the regular mail. They received information faster than anyone, including the monarchs. They used questionable techniques to build their fortune by using their contacts to manipulate all kinds of business opportunities.

Rothschild notables – Estimated that they control half the world’s wealth. Senators are bought and paid off by their system. The Freemason Mazzini, who helped start Communism, praised Lionel de Rothschild (the French Rothschilds added the ‘de’), saying ‘Rothschild could be King of France if he so desired’. The Rothschild sons became powerful within Freemasonry – Karl Rothschild, James Meyer Rothschild, and Nathan Meyer Rothschild, in particular.

These members of the Illuminati are prominent Bilderbergers. Rothschild agent, Colonel House was Woodrow Wilson’s right-hand man, helping start the Federal Reserve. The Fed has been an effective tool for the famous members of the Illuminati and the Rothschilds, creating crises like the Great Depression. The Depression helped consolidate financial power over the U.S., putting it in the hands of the Rothschild banking alliance between J.P. Morgan’s First National Bank and Schiff’s Kuhn, Loeb-run National City Bank.

FAMOUS MEMBERS OF THE ILLUMINATI: KENNEDY

The Illuminati Kennedys began in Ireland, descendants of Brian Boru (also known as Brian Caeneddi) and his nephew who spelled it Cinneide. After them, it was O’Kennedy.

Kennedy notablesJohn F. Kennedy’s father was Joseph Patrick Kennedy. Joseph was part of the Illuminati as a member of the Pilgrim Society (a 6 degree of the Illuminati). He also worked closely with other Illuminati kingpins and the Mafia. Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield were Illuminati mind/sex slaves and mistresses of JFK.

JFK’s election was ‘won’ through massive election fraud in Illinois and Texas. Richard Nixon was told he was to lose, but would be given the Presidency in the future by the Illuminati.

FAMOUS MEMBERS OF THE ILLUMINATI: TEN MORE TO GO

So far, we’ve discussed a tiny amount of information about three of the more famous families that make up the famous members of the Illuminati. Bloodlines of the Illuminati gives you much further detail on these three and, of course, the other ten.

    WHO ARE THE MEMBERS?

The members of the Council of 13 vary based on age and status, but there is always one member of the core families that make up the global elite represented on the Council in deference to the power and reach of those families.

The families who have members serving on the Illuminati Council are either members of or related to the: Astor, Collins, DuPont, Freeman, Kennedy, Li, Onassis, Reynolds, Rockefeller, Rothschild, Russell and Van Duyn families.

Some of those names are probably familiar to you as titans of finance and politics. The ones that aren’t so familiar to you are renowned mostly for their occult experience and religious power.

These families all have ties to each other through marriage and also through blood so that the fortunes of each family are inextricably linked both to each other and to the success of the Illuminati plan to create a New World Order.

    THE COUNCIL IN WORLD AFFAIRS

The timing of the meeting of the Council often coincides with the most important elections around the world and the meetings of groups like the Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission which are groups founded by and made up of members of the global elite.

While on the surface the Council meetings may seem to be just a chance for some old friends to get together and relive old times, the meetings are actually very serious affairs where there are religious obligations that need to be met and events that need to be created in order to take their plan for a New World Order Government to the next level.

As the plan progresses, events are happening faster and in a more concentrated manner so the Council needs to work hard to manage the creation and execution of these events.

    IS ALL THIS REAL?

It’s overwhelming for some people to think that there really is a global elite group that holds secret councils and shapes the events of the modern world. It’s an idea that is outside the realm of experience for many people in modern society.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not true; it just means that the campaign waged by the global elite to keep their actions secret has worked. If you look at the evidence, you’ll see that the Council, and the plan for a New World Order, are undeniably real.

    Illuminati Ritual on Tape.

This 1798 book presents the proofs of a conspiracy against all the religions and governments of Europe carried on in the secret meetings of Freemasons, Illuminati and Reading Societies, collected from good authorities by John Robison, Professor of natural philosophy and Secretary to the Royal Society of Edinburgh, to which is added a postscript. Contents: John Robinson letter and Lucretius poem; schisms in Freemasonry; the Illuminati; the German Union; the French Revolution; postscript.

John Robison (1739–1805) was a Scottish physicist and mathematician. He was a professor of philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. A member of the Edinburgh Philosophical Society when it received its royal warrant, he was appointed as the first General Secretary to the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Robison invented the siren and also worked with James Watt on an early steam car. Following the French Revolution, Robison became disenchanted with elements of the Enlightenment. He authored Proofs of a Conspiracy in 1797—a polemic accusing Freemasonry of being infiltrated by Weishaupt’s Order of the Illuminati. Robison and French priest Abbé Barruel independently developed similar views that the Illuminati had infiltrated Continental Freemasonry, leading to the excesses of the French Revolution. In 1798, the Reverend G. W. Snyder sent Robison’s book to George Washington for his thoughts on the subject in which he replied to him in his Letter to the Reverend G. W. Snyder (24 October 1798). Modern conspiracy theorists like Nesta Webster and William Guy Carr believe that Robison’s book described what the Illuminati may have started was the template for the subversion of otherwise benign organizations by radical groups through the 19th and 20th centuries. Spiritual Counterfeits Project editor Tal Brooke has compared the views of Proofs of a Conspiracy with those found in Carroll Quigley’s Tragedy and Hope (Macmillan, 1966). Brooke suggests that the new world order, which Robison believed Adam Weishaupt (founder of the Illuminati) had in part accomplished through the infiltration of Freemasonry, will now be completed by those holding sway over the international banking system (e.g., by means of the Rothschilds’ banks, Federal Reserve, IMF, and World Bank).

  • About Illuminati with Videos.

The movement was founded on May 1, 1776, in Ingolstadt (Upper Bavaria) as the Order of the Illuminati, with an initial membership of five,[1]by Jesuit-taught Adam Weishaupt (d. 1830),[2] who was the first lay professor of canon law at the University of Ingolstadt.[3] The movement was made up of freethinkers as an offshoot of the Enlightenment, and seems to have been modeled on the Freemasons.[4]

Originally Weishaupt had planned the order to be named the “Perfectibilists“.[5] The group has also been called the Bavarian Illuminatiand the movement itself has been referred to as Illuminism (after illuminism). In 1777, Karl Theodor became ruler of Bavaria. He was a proponent of Enlightened Despotism and, in 1784, his government banned all secret societies, including the Illuminati.

During the period when the Illuminati were legally allowed to operate, many influential intellectuals and progressive politicians counted themselves as members, including Ferdinand of Brunswick and the diplomat Xavier von Zwack, who was number two in the operation and was found with much of the group’s literature when his home was searched.[6] The Illuminati’s members pledged obedience to their superiors. Members were divided into three main classes, each with several degrees.

The order had its branches in most countries of the European continent; it reportedly had around 2,000 members over the span of ten years.[7] The organization had its attraction for literary men, such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Johann Gottfried Herder, and even for the reigning dukes of Gotha and Weimar. Weishaupt modeled his group to some extent on Freemasonry, and many Illuminati chapters drew membership from existing Masonic lodges. Internal rupture and panic over succession preceded its downfall, which was effected by the Secular Edict made by the Bavarian government in 1785.[8]

    Barruel and Robison

The March 2, 1785 edict was apparently a “deathblow to the Illuminati in Bavaria.” Weishaupt had fled, and documents from the group had been seized and were then published by the government in 1787.[9]

Between 1787 and 1789 Augustin Barruel‘s Memoirs Illustrating the History of Jacobinism and John Robison‘s Proofs of a Conspiracy both publicized the theory that the Illuminati had survived and represented an ongoing international conspiracy, including the claim that it was behind the French Revolution. Both books proved to be very popular, spurring reprints and paraphrases by others, like the one by ReverendSeth Payson.[10][11] Some response was critical, such as Jean-Joseph Mounier‘s On the Influence Attributed to Philosophers, Free-Masons, and to the Illuminati on the Revolution of France.

    New England Illuminati scare

Robison and Barruel’s works made their way to the United States. Across New England, Reverend Jedidiah Morse and others sermonized against the Illuminati, their sermons printed, and the matter followed in newspapers. The concern died down in the first decade of the 1800s, though had some revival during the Anti-Masonic movement of the 1820s and 30s.[12]

    Modern Illuminati

Writers such as Mark Dice,[13] David IckeTexe Marrs, Ryan Burke, Jüri Lina and Morgan Gricar have argued that the Bavarian Illuminati survived, possibly to this day. Many of these theories propose that world events are being controlled and manipulated by a secret societycalling itself the Illuminati.[14][15] Conspiracy theorists have claimed that many notable people were or are members of the Illuminati. Presidents of the United States are a common target for such claims [16][17]

In addition to the shadowy and secret organization, several modern fraternal groups claim to be the “heirs” of the Bavarian Illuminati and have openly used the name “Illuminati” in founding their own rites. Some, such as the multiple groups that call themselves some variation on “The Illuminati Order,”[18][19] use the name directly in the name of their organization, while others, such as the Ordo Templi Orientis, use the name as a grade of initiation within their organization.

    Popular culture

The Illuminati are a recurring theme in popular culture. References to such an organization appear in many fictional works across many genres, appearing in novels like The Illuminatus! Trilogy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton WilsonDan Brown‘s Angels & DemonsThe Fallen Angels by Susannah Kells & Bernard Cornwell, and The Illuminati by Larry Burkett; in films like Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, on television as in the Disney animated television show Gargoyles; in video games such as Deus Ex; in comic book series like New Avengers: Illuminati; as well as in both trading card and roleplaying games like Götterdämmerung.[20]

These objects of the order were to be revealed to members only after their promotion to the “priestly” degree (Nachtr., I, 68). The preliminary degrees were to serve for the selection, preparation, and concealment of the true “Illuminati”; the others were to open the way for the free religion and socialorganization of the future, in which all distinction of nations, creeds, etc., would disappear. The government of the order was administered by the superiors of the Minerval “churches”, “provincials”, “nationals”, and “areopagites” (who constituted the supreme council), under the direction of Weishaupt as general of the order. Members were acquainted only with their immediate superiors, and only a few trusted members knew that Weishaupt was the founder and supreme head of the order. All the members were obliged to give themselves a training in accordance with the aims of the society, and to make themselves useful, while the order, on its part, pledged itself to further their interests by the most effectual means. They were especially recommended to systematically observe persons and events, to acquire knowledge, and to pursue scientific research in so far as it might serve the purposes of the order. Concerning all persons with whom they had intercourse they were to gather information, and on all matters which could possibly affect either themselves or the order they were to hand in sealed reports; these were opened by superiors unknown to the writers, and were, insubstance, referred to the general. The purpose of this and other regulations was to enable the order to attain its object by securing for it a controlling influence in all directions, and especially by pressing culture and enlightenment into its service. All illuministic and official organs, the press, schools, seminariescathedral chapters (hence, too, all appointments to sees, pulpits, and chairs) were to be brought as far as possible under the influence of the organization, and princes themselves were to be surrounded by a legion of enlightened men, in order not only to disarm their opposition, but also to compel their energetic co-operation. A complete transformation would thus be effected; public opinion would be controlled; “priests and princes” would find their hands tied; the marplots who ventured to interfere would repent their temerity; and the order would become an object of dread to all its enemies.

Concerning the influence actually exerted by the Illuminati, the statements of ex-Freemasons—L.A. Hossman, J.A. Starck, J. Robinson, the Abbé Barruel, etc.–must be accepted with reserve, when they ascribe to the order a leading rôle in the outbreak and progress of the French Revolution of 1789. Their presentation of facts is often erroneous, their inferences are untenable, and their theses not only lack proof, but, in view of our present knowledge of the French Revolution (cf., e.g., Aulard, “Hist. pol. de la Rév. Franç.”, 3rd ed., 1905; Lavisse-Rambaud, “Hist. générale”, VIII, 1896), they are extremely improbable. On the other hand, once it had discarded, after 1786, the peculiarities of Weishaupt, “Illuminationism” was simply the carrying out of the principles of “enlightenment”; in other words, it was Freemasonry and practical Liberalism adapted to the requirements of the age; as such it exerted an important influence on the intellectual and social development of the nineteenth century.      WikiLeaks has embarrassed the Governments the world over by its exposure of Foreign Relations details of  many a country.

As has been pointed out ,there has been wilful wrong doing, outright lying, dressing up of information , deals within deals  by Nations.

Also there has been special interest groups for whom there was a specific agenda to be carried out and the leaders have done their bidding.

It also exposed the crassly crude descriptions of world leaders by those in authority.

Does this mean one should ensure all documents relating to foreign relations be in the Public Domain?

    Answer is Yes and No.

Those details the exposure of which might be a National Security Threat may be with held.

(this begs the question.who decides on what National Security is ?

    This can be addressed separately.)

Other than this, all documents must be in the Public Realm, especially relating to natural Resources sharing, Exports, Duty cut backs Corporates)

In a Democracy such as India, the Opposition Parties have a Duty to perform in eliciting the information on the Floor of the Parliament .

Unfortunately they don’, for they know they have to face same fate when they come to power and they also have things to hide.

Take Bofors issue,Musharraf failing to sign the Agreement, bringing into the open Black Money stashed abroad.

Finally it all comes to Leaders of Integrity and Honesty, which, now  ,is at a premium.

WikiLeaks is neither the Russian Bolshevik party nor the American Democratic party. Nevertheless WikiLeaks is readdressing the issue which was left open at the end of the First World War: is diplomatic secret in the people’s interest? Both Trotsky and Wilson moved their agenda forward to some limited extent: the Soviet Union soon became a harsh dictatorship and transparency was so despised under Stalin that even the map of the Moscow underground was a classified document. The practice of publicity had better luck in the United States and in other Western countries. Transparency and accountability started to be common sense in consolidated democratic regimes although state secret still exists and diplomacy is still covered by the seven veils of classified documents. Even in the most democratic countries, secrecy in international affairs continues to be justified by the need to protect the state’s integrity and to guarantee citizens’ security and these aims prevail over the need to guarantee transparency and freedom of expression.

Through WikiLeaks world public opinion was informed of numerous violations of humanitarian law in Afghanistan, of false reports on the legitimacy of the military intervention in Iraq, of the exaggeration of the weapons of mass destruction held by Saddam Hussein. This core information has been peppered with hundreds and hundreds of more exciting but less relevant gossip about political celebrities. Not surprisingly, those holding the secrets have reacted furiously against the leaks, have made what efforts they can to prevent further leaks and threatened retaliation against those who provided the information, those who published it and even those who dared to read it. The prize for the most furious reaction goes to Congressman Peter King, who wanted WikiLeaks to be declared a foreign terrorist organization. These reactions are certainly comprehensible but not justified. If there is the need to fight a war, the citizens, the taxpayers and even more the conscripted should clearly know the reasons for spilling blood on the battleground. Otherwise, as Noam Chomsky correctly pointed out, “government secrecy is to protect the government from its own population”.

Until now WikLleaks’ revelations have not provoked major damage to intelligence mechanisms, either in Afghanistan or anywhere else. It may always be that such revelations can harm and identify specific persons, making their actions and their information services known to malicious people. Excessive transparency can in principle be dangerous for a few individuals, and it should be balanced with the need to protect the privacy of individuals. At the expense of violating the privacy of many individuals, WikiLeaks has allowed public opinion to know that public offices have been used for private purposes, that false information has been released with the explicit aim of diverting public attention, that crimes have been committed without liability. Looking at the outcomes so far produced, it can be argued that the violation of privacy has been minimal compared to the relevance of the information provided to public opinion.

An instrument like WikiLeaks has proven to be helpful not only in making governments and their officials more accountable. It has also proved very useful to check and control the business sector. We have already seen that WikiLeaks has started eating into banking secrecy, with the publication of the greatest tax dodgers’ lists by a banker that worked in Cayman Islands on behalf of the Swiss bank Julius Baer. In this case, it would be difficult to claim that confidentiality on tax evasion and money laundering should be protected in deference of privacy. It is somehow surprising that some Courts, rather than using the occasion to prosecute financial crimes, have preferred to be on the side of the banks and requested that leaked documents should be removed from the public domain.

WikiLeaks raises a more general point that needs to be addressed: is there any effective filter between the load of information leaked out and what is actually published? WikilLeaks today has been a pioneer and it is carrying out an important public function, but it is probably inappropriate that an unaccountable private organization holds so much power. The opportunity to publish classified document has traditionally been a prerogative of all media, but there is no media, to date, that is solely devoted to releasing classified documents. This puts WikiLeakes in a league by its own.

The responsibility to monitor the transparency of geopolitical relations, of financial flows and of other sensitive information should be put in the hands of organizations that are themselves fully transparent and accountable. The empirical research carried out by One World Trust on the accountability of inter-governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations and of business corporations has often provided counter-intuitive results, indicating that institutions such as the World Bank are more transparent than institutions such as the WWF International.# Paradoxically, WikiLeaks risks being an organization more secretive than those whose documents it publishes. “Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?” said Juvenal and today we can wonder: “Who will assure the transparency of those who generate transparency?”

  • US agrees to tell Britain’s Secrets to Russia.WikiLeaks.

HMS Vanguard is Britain's lead Trident-armed submarine. The US, under a nuclear deal, has agreed to give the Kremlin the serial numbers of the missiles it gives Britain Photo: TAM

Britain would have already sold US secrets to Russia.

    Story:

The US secretly agreed to give the Russians sensitive information on Britain’s nuclear deterrent to persuade them to sign a key treaty, The Daily Telegraph can disclose.

Information about every Trident missile the US supplies to Britain will be given to Russia as part of an arms control deal signed by President Barack Obama next week.

Defence analysts claim the agreement risks undermining Britain’s policy of refusing to confirm the exact size of its nuclear arsenal.

The fact that the Americans used British nuclear secrets as a bargaining chip also sheds new light on the so-called “special relationship”, which is shown often to be a one-sided affair by US diplomatic communications obtained by the WikiLeaks website.

Details of the behind-the-scenes talks are contained in more than 1,400 US embassy cables published to date by the Telegraph, including almost 800 sent from the London Embassy, which are published online today. The documents also show that:

    • America spied on Foreign Office ministers by gathering gossip on their private lives and professional relationships.

    • Intelligence-sharing arrangements with the US became strained after the controversy over Binyam Mohamed, the former Guantánamo Bay detainee who sued the Government over his alleged torture.

David Miliband disowned the Duchess of York by saying she could not “be controlled” after she made an undercover TV documentary.

    • Tens of millions of pounds of overseas aid was stolen and spent on plasma televisions and luxury goods by corrupt regimes.

A series of classified messages sent to Washington by US negotiators show how information on Britain’s nuclear capability was crucial to securing Russia’s support for the “New START” deal.

Although the treaty was not supposed to have any impact on Britain, the leaked cables show that Russia used the talks to demand more information about the UK’s Trident missiles, which are manufactured and maintained in the US.

Washington lobbied London in 2009 for permission to supply Moscow with detailed data about the performance of UK missiles. The UK refused, but the US agreed to hand over the serial numbers of Trident missiles it transfers to Britain.

Professor Malcolm Chalmers said: “This appears to be significant because while the UK has announced how many missiles it possesses, there has been no way for the Russians to verify this. Over time, the unique identifiers will provide them with another data point to gauge the size of the British arsenal.”

Duncan Lennox, editor of Jane’s Strategic Weapons Systems, said: “They want to find out whether Britain has more missiles than we say we have, and having the unique identifiers might help them.”

While the US and Russia have long permitted inspections of each other’s nuclear weapons, Britain has sought to maintain some secrecy to compensate for the relatively small size of its arsenal.

William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, last year disclosed that “up to 160” warheads are operational at any one time, but did not confirm the number of missiles.

  • Remaining impartial in the Middle East .

Notwithstanding syrupy prose ,what comes out is the fact that Jews are still talking about times when people were supposed have occupied places as per their mythologies.By the same yardstick, Hindu mythologies declare the land of Hindus encompassed the whole globe.Shall Hindus take a claim for the whole world?
People have been migrating and living together notwithstanding religious texts for ages in all parts of the world.Only after the concealed desire of the Jews to possess what has been said in their religion, got intensified after genocide of Jews by Hitler. Jews should, better than any body else what it is to be stateless. Why ,driven by victim hood, should one deny the land where the Palestinians have been living? It is not as though Jews are being driven out.Palestinians also should be provided land.
But the Jews seem to bent on denying Palestinians space more than acquiring space for Jews themselves.
    Very sad.

As Tim Franks finishes his spell as the BBC’s Middle East correspondent, he explains how his own background made it inevitable that some people would make certain assumptions.
Tim Franks reporting from the Gaza-Israel border
Tim Franks has been BBC Middle East correspondent since March 2007

First an admission: I am a Jew, and a journalist.

And now an apology: I hate the solipsistic writing I am about to be guilty of, where the journalist puts himself at the centre of the story.

But let me try to explain.

The reason for the admission is that my dual identity – Jew and journalist – has not just been a matter for me these past three-and-a- half years. From the start, it was of apparently burning import for a good number of friends, acquaintances and people whom I had never met.

That it was so, perhaps illuminates one small corner of the cloud of smog that envelops the Middle East.

There were those Jews from the synagogue in my previous posting, Brussels, who heard about my new job, clapped me on the back and said, “Thank goodness, at last you’ll be able to put our side of the story.”

The Middle East has become occluded by prejudice, prejudice in its literal sense of pre-judgement

There was the non-Jewish classmate from school – someone I had not exchanged a word with for 20 years – who emailed me out of the blue to commiserate over how difficult it would be for me in my new job not to have divided loyalties, to Judaism and to journalism.

And there was the non-Jewish friend of the family who declared, to one of my relatives, that my appointment had come about because of the pressure the previous Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, had applied to the director-general of the BBC.

And there are many who believe that, as a journalist, I am also guilty before I have broadcast a word: guilty of being in hock to the all-powerful Jewish lobby, guilty of being in thrall to the Palestinian culture of victimhood, guilty of stirring over-heated controversy out of every spit and whistle in this corner of western Asia.
    Balata refugee camp
Balata is the largest refugee camp in the West Bank

The Middle East has become occluded by prejudice, prejudice in its literal sense of pre-judgement.

Too many people have unshakeable views of others. The label does not help identify the person. It becomes the person.

It can be a rather comforting deception.

Take the radioactive issue of refugees.

The West Bank’s largest refugee camp is Balata – home to more than 30,000 Palestinians, wedged into concrete apartment blocks barely a shoulder-width apart.

Ask the young boys there – boys who are third, even fourth generation refugees, born in this camp – where they come from and, without missing a beat, they will still say Haifa or Jaffa or other cities deep within Israel, places that certainly they and probably their parents have never visited.

And so it was a shock to me recently when, in a hotel room in Amman, the Palestinians’ chief negotiator, Saeb Erekat, told me that the Israelis had to understand that part of any final deal involving the establishment of a Palestinian state would have to include the return of some Palestinian refugees to Israel.

Some. Not all, as the usual theology demands.

    Jewish settlements

There are Israelis willing to punch holes in the wall of myths.

Jeremy is a British Jew who made aliyah (emigrated to Israel) 20 years ago.

Construction work at a Jewish settlement
More than 430,000 Jewish settlers live in the West Bank

He, his wife and three daughters live in a small apartment in Jerusalem. It is not an easy or financially cushy life but, as a religiously observant Jew and committed Zionist, there is nowhere he would rather be.

Which is not to say that he is not speaking with ever thicker tones of despair about his new home country.

Take the Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

Ideologically committed Jewish settlers regard this land, replete as it is with biblical references, as more precious than Tel Aviv or other cities within the Green Line, within what’s considered to be Israel proper.

Jeremy says that this veneration of the land has become “idolatry.” Few insults, between Jews, over the last 5,000 years, have been more wounding.

    ‘Pogrom’

A more recent word was used in the wake of an eviction of a houseful of Jewish settlers in the West Bank city of Hebron.

Map of Israel and the Occupied Territories

Despite doom-laden predictions, the Israeli police and army managed quite easily to extract the Jews, whom the Israeli Supreme Court had ruled were living illegally in the building.

But then Jewish rioters wreaked their vengeance on Palestinians living in the valley below the house.

I crouched by an outside wall, while rocks and firebombs were thrown at the homes, inside which terrified families had barricaded themselves.

Leaning over the wall, on the far side of the valley, were scores of residents of the adjoining settlement of Kiryat Arba.

They appeared, passively, to be watching the mayhem unfold.

The next day, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz called the previous evening’s riot a “pogrom”, the word coined in the 19th Century to describe the systematic, blood-soaked, anti-Jewish rioting in Russia.

    Psychological barriers

The term was shocking, poignant and appropriate.

I guess, and again forgive the solipsism, but some may want to know my response to the question that I, as a BBC journalist, could never – and never wanted to – answer: namely, what did that, and a million other incidents, make me, a Jew, feel about the Jewish state?

Probably unfairly… I resented the fact that none of them appeared to be approaching each rousing song or traditional prayer in any different way on this specific day

On one level, it was simple.

That night of rioting was ghastly. It reflected a deep reservoir of shamefulness and dysfunction.

My paternal grandparents had, as children, early last century, left Lithuania and Russia for the sanctuary of Britain.

They and their families would have known all about the particular terror of pogroms.

The following evening, I was in my synagogue in Jerusalem for the Friday night service that brings in Shabbat (sabbath).

It is the most determinedly happy point of the Jewish week, and the synagogue to which I have belonged the past three years makes a point of filling the hour and a quarter with – in liturgical terms – some cracking tunes.

By about half-way through, I have usually overcome my British and hazily agnostic reserve and am joining in. But on this Friday, I could not escape feeling flat and depressed.

Probably unfairly – given the unusually high sensitivity among much of this congregation to what is happening on occupied territory – I resented the fact that none of them appeared to be approaching each rousing song or traditional prayer in any different way on this specific day.

In a way, it was almost adolescent: why can’t they see the blackness too?

In another, it reflected the psychological barriers Israelis have erected at the same time as the separation barrier along the West Bank: it puts what is happening over there – over the other side of the Green Line – out of mind.

It is, as one Israeli friend acidly put it, “a peace dividend, without the peace”.

I do not believe I had covered the story for radio or TV any differently because I was a Jew.

But was I feeling more bleak the following day because this was violence perpetrated by Jews? Well, perhaps.

    Ineluctable truths

Against that, and many other similar incidents, there were also countless moments of celebration and nurture, which felt particular because of where they were and the company they kept.

Ploughing on Kibbutz Degania Bet in 1945 in what was then the British Mandate of Palestine
The first kibbutz was founded in 1910

I was never the sort of Jew who went weak-kneed when close to the Western Wall and, indeed, from my first visit to Israel as a teenager, I rather kicked against the assumption that I would be transported on waves of epiphany.

But when I was lucky enough to spend eve of festival meals in the homes of Jewish friends in Jerusalem, were they special because of the people or because of the locale?

It seems futile to try to separate, given that these were Jews who had chosen to live in Jerusalem.

The same goes for the kibbutz, the rural collective farm, where one of my favourite artists had resided for more than 50 years, and where the life remained a deeply unfashionable paean to a socialist idyll, which in turn had been a foundation of the original Zionist dream.

In other words, it is important to contextualise.

Of course it is, it is what we, as journalists, should always aim to do.

But it is what you absolutely cannot do if you trade in apparently ineluctable truths about the nature of Israelis or Jews or Palestinians or Arabs or Muslims: then the circle becomes sterile and self-defeating.

    ‘Another code’

So, to return at long last to what I, as a Jew, feel about the Jewish state. Well, it is what I, as a journalist, feel about the Jewish state: that it’s there.

Just as the stateless Palestinians are there.

Yes, this is the Middle East but it is not the Middle Ages

Neither is going to cease being without a blood-soaked cataclysm. No competing narrative is going to vanquish the other. We need to move on.

There are not many – maybe not any – places such as this land.

Places where there have been 4,000 years of conflict. Where it is almost impossible to plant your foot on the historical turf and say “Aha! On this we can agree.”

In what city in the world, other than Jerusalem, has control swung 11 times between religions?

So yes, this place is unique.

But does that mean it demands different rules?

One of the most telling comments I heard was uttered on a hilltop settlement by Shoshanna Shilo.

She was a grandmother, with twinkling eyes, whom I had first met as she was carried away, rigid with fury, by four Israeli military policemen, from an impromptu protest in the West Bank.

I met her again, a few weeks later, at her own settlement.

It wasn’t, she said, just that this land which the rest of the world wants for a Palestinian state belongs to the Jews. It was also what she saw as the delusion that the other side wants peace.

“This is the Middle East,” she told me. “It’s not Europe. We live,” she said, “by another code.”

Well, yes, it is the Middle East but, no, it is not the Middle Ages.

These days, we should all try to live by a different code. Shouldn’t we?
