  • Why Do We WorkTed.Com Study And Bhagavad Gita.

I watched an insightful Video in Ted.com on ‘Why do people work?’

Scroll down for Video and Transcript.

People who were paid money gradually lost interest.

People whose work was discarded gave up immediately.

    Work.
    Work.

Those who were appreciated performed better,

And those who did not for pleasure did well.

Money ,it is observed by the narrator is not a factor at all.

The instances of Adventure Sports like Mountaineering was quoted.

True, those who climb mountains climb despite hazards and payments  start all over again for the sheer pleasure of it.

Edmund Hillary put it better, when he  asked why he kept on climbing Mountains,

    ‘Because it is there”

    Appears to be true.

But they too need Money to climb mountains and they go in for some other jobs or for sponsors for expenses.

    So Money is needed.

The point is we do get pleasure in doing what we want to and we perform better, yet if the basic needs are not met you can not do do or work what gives you pleasure.

The crux is the result of the Work.

If the work is appreciated by others and if the work is creative and not destroyed we work better.

So work or performance Pleasure and efficiency is determined by the results it produces.

Yet the results of work is not determined by our efforts or work alone.

It has other factors to influence the results, like the other factors , environment and people.

Even a simple task like brushing one’s teeth assumes and needs other factors like Gravity, paste being available at a given time and most imp importantly one should be alive.

These factors, agents are not in one’s control and as such the outcome of any work depends heavily on these external factors.

The best one can do is to efficiently manage the one factor in one’s control, that is Himself.

If one were to worry about the other factors like others’ opinion and other factors, the very thought will impair on’e efficiency, thus lowering the chances of the work being completed successfully and as a result the pleasure one can derive.

Therefore to improve efficiency and derive pleasure out of work is to change the mind-set into one of detached attachment.

An action that is performed is non action when there is no involvement or motivation.

An action that is performed with the results in mind are Actions, which may cause disappointments when one is not appreciated or the work is destroyed.

Non action is an action is one where one performs an action or work because it has to be done without bothering about the consequences .

Here there is action and yet there is no anticipation of results and consequently no disappointment; if it is appreciated or remains for some time you are Happy, it is a Bonus.

This is the way one has to approach to work to be Happy and be more efficient.

One should be careful in understanding this thought as this does not mean non involvement or irresponsibility.

This is the Message of the Path of Action by Lord Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita.

    Story:

When we think about how people work, the naive intuition we have is that people are like rats in a maze — that all people care about is money, and the moment we give people money, we can direct them to work one way, we can direct them to work another way. This is why we give bonuses to bankers and pay in all kinds of ways. And we really have this incredibly simplistic view of why people work and what the labor market looks like.

At the same time, if you think about it, there’s all kinds of strange behaviors in the world around us. Think about something like mountaineering and mountain climbing. If you read books of people who climb mountains, difficult mountains, do you think that those books are full of moments of joy and happiness? No, they are full of misery. In fact, it’s all about frostbite and difficulty to walk and difficulty of breathing — cold, challenging circumstances. And if people were just trying to be happy, the moment they would get to the top, they would say, “This was a terrible mistake. I’ll never do it again.” (Laughter) “Instead, let me sit on a beach somewhere drinking mojitos.” But instead, people go down, and after they recover, they go up again. And if you think about mountain climbing as an example, it suggests all kinds of things. It suggests that we care about reaching the end, a peak. It suggests that we care about the fight, about the challenge. It suggests that there’s all kinds of other things that motivate us to work or behave in all kinds of ways.

And for me personally, I started thinking about this after a student came to visit me. This was a student that was one of my students a few years earlier. And he came one day back to campus. And he told me the following story: He said that for more than two weeks, he was working on a PowerPoint presentation. He was working in a big bank. This was in preparation for a merger and acquisition. And he was working very hard on this presentation — graphs, tables, information. He stayed late at night every day. And the day before it was due, he sent his PowerPoint presentation to his boss, and his boss wrote him back and said, “Nice presentation, but the merger is canceled.” And the guy was deeply depressed. Now at the moment when he was working, he was actually quite happy. Every night he was enjoying his work, he was staying late, he was perfecting this PowerPoint presentation. But knowing that nobody would ever watch that made him quite depressed.

So I started thinking about how do we experiment with this idea of the fruits of our labor. And to start with, we created a little experiment in which we gave people Legos, and we asked them to build with Legos. And for some people, we gave them Legos and we said,”Hey, would you like to build this Bionicle for three dollars? We’ll pay you three dollars for it.” And people said yes, and they built with these Legos. And when they finished, we took it, we put it under the table, and we said, “Would you like to build another one, this time for $2.70?” If they said yes, we gave them another one. And when they finished, we asked them, “Do you want to build another one?” for $2.40, $2.10, and so on, until at some point people said, “No more. It’s not worth it for me.” This was what we called the meaningful condition. People built one Bionicle after another. After they finished every one of them, we put them under the table. And we told them that at the end of the experiment, we will take all these Bionicles, we will disassemble them, we will put them back in the boxes, and we will use it for the next participant.

There was another condition. This other condition was inspired by David, my student. And this other condition we called the Sisyphic condition. And if you remember the story about Sisyphus, Sisyphus was punished by the gods to push the same rock up a hill, and when he almost got to the end, the rock would roll over, and he would have to start again. And you can think about this as the essence of doing futile work. You can imagine that if he pushed the rock on different hills, at least he would have some sense of progress. Also, if you look at prison movies, sometimes the way that the guards torture the prisoners is to get them to dig a hole and when the prisoner is finished, they ask him to fill the hole back up and then dig again. There’s something about this cyclical version of doing something over and over and over that seems to be particularly demotivating. So in the second condition of this experiment, that’s exactly what we did. We asked people, “Would you like to build one Bionicle for three dollars?” And if they said yes, they built it. Then we asked them, “Do you want to build another one for $2.70?” And if they said yes, we gave them a new one, and as they were building it, we took apart the one that they just finished. And when they finished that, we said, “Would you like to build another one, this time for 30 cents less?” And if they said yes, we gave them the one that they built and we broke. So this was an endless cycleof them building and us destroying in front of their eyes.

Now what happens when you compare these two conditions? The first thing that happenedwas that people built many more Bionicles — they built 11 versus seven — in the meaningful condition versus the Sisyphus condition. And by the way, we should point out that this was not a big meaning. People were not curing cancer or building bridges. People were building Bionicles for a few cents. And not only that, everybody knew that the Bionicles would be destroyed quite soon. So there was not a real opportunity for big meaning. But even the small meaning made a difference.

Now we had another version of this experiment. In this other version of the experiment, we didn’t put people in this situation, we just described to them the situation, much as I am describing to you now, and we asked them to predict what the result would be. What happened? People predicted the right direction but not the right magnitude. People who were just given the description of the experiment said that in the meaningful condition people would probably build one more Bionicle. So people understand that meaning is important, they just don’t understand the magnitude of the importance, the extent to which it’s important.

  • Work From Home ,The Bane, Banned By Yahoo Memo

Work from Home, this Concept, introduced by the IT Industry, is a bane of Work Culture.

What is wrong in working from Home?

You do not get the work ambiance at Home.

People want ambiance to suit their moods, be it a Mall,A Shop or a Theater, they do not mind paying a premium for this!

But why are they reluctant to be at the Office for Work?

The reason given by a relative of mine who works in a giant IT firm is that work from Home saves infrastructure costs, saves Desk Space, cuts down electricity etc!

I do not know this really is the reason.

What I do know is that when one works  from Home,

You are not involved in the Work

You do not take care of  Family either.

Your work pattern, meals Rhythm, Sleeping pattern become erratic.

You interfere and slow down in the running of  Home which you know pretty little, excepting issuing checks.

You become restless and over a period of time become depressed.

This gets heightened if your Spouse has regular working hours.

It is still worse if your spouse also stays Home as too much familiarity breeds contempt.

As the Yahoo CEO put it, one  needs to be physically present at the workplace.

Has anybody thought of Home at Work where you run family from Work place, go Home only for Bed!

    No More Work From Home,Yahoo.

“”Today by CEO Marissa Mayer, which requires that Yahoo employees who work remotely relocate to company facilities.

“Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home,” reads the memo to employees from HR head Jackie Reses. “We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together.”

Painfully awkward as this is phrased, it means every Yahoo get to your desks stat!

YAHOO! PROPRIETARY AND CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION — DO NOT FORWARD

    Yahoos,

From Sunnyvale to Santa Monica, Bangalore to Beijing — I think we can all feel the energy and buzz in our offices….

Beginning in June, we’re asking all employees with work-from-home arrangements to work in Yahoo! offices. If this impacts you, your management has already been in touch with next steps. And, for the rest of us who occasionally have to stay home for the cable guy, please use your best judgment in the spirit of collaboration. Being a Yahoo isn’t just about your day-to-day job, it is about the interactions and experiences that are only possible in our offices…

  • Stress In IT Industry Causes

Though the Stress factor is responsible for suicide and Divorces, to cite some areas, it affects the people in  the IT Industry more.

As mentioned my earlier post it is the not normal working rhythm as a consequence, irregular food habits, lack of physical exercise, varying sleep pattern, setting up of high and unrealistic goals( most of them set for  to suit the Company’s needs, assumption of fake IDs  as in the case of Call Centers and BPOs,less time for persoanl interaction with the family(includes, apart from wife and children, parents and relatives, high Income at a young age, not finding enough time to manage family affairs, Peer pressure, multiple chains of commands and reporting and constant thinking of job all the time(the IT people would deny this) are some of the pressure points.

    Stress and Anxiety.
    Stress Reaction

“If you’re in a position within the IT business, you’ll know that you’re expected to come to grips with huge amounts of information. So it’s normal that, from time to time, you’ll find yourself out of your comfort zone. How do you tell the difference between normal stress and something more serious?

    The signs of stress

While the signs of stress can vary significantly from person to person, cognitive impairment is common. Indecision, forgetfulness, negative thinking, loss of confidence and a lack of concentration are all classic symptons. Physical symptoms can include hair-loss, muscle-tension, sweating and nail-biting. Stressed people make more mistakes, smoke or drink more, are more prone to accidents, and suffer from insomnia, loss of appetite and self-neglect.

So how do you combat stress? First of all, keep active and maintain your interests outside of work – many stressed people give up on exercise or hobbies, but not having an outlet for stress can make things even worse. Try to take a more positive approach to situations: adapting to change and viewing new situations in a more positive light will be crucial to dealing with stressors. And if you do recognise some of the symptoms listed, visit your GP and explain any concerns and symptoms.

As career consultant Sherridan Hughes points out, “No working environment is pressure-free and jobs in IT are no exception. How you adapt to changing circumstances is key to your ability to handle potentially stressful situations in a more positive way.”

If this ‘stressed out’ feeling is about too much work and not enough time, you may want to reconsider how you deal with people from other areas of the business making demands, all assuming that their request should take priority.

Log each request and attend to them in the order they were received, making sure any legal or regulatory pieces of work get done quickly.

Some elements to consider for effective prioritisation in IT:

    1. Who is making the request and how senior are they?

    2. Is it a ‘must-do’ or just a ‘nice to do’? Is it a legal, regulatory or industry standard that needs to be met? Will it hinder your competitiveness as a firm until it is done?

    3. How does it fit in with the company strategy and priorities?

    4. What are the dependencies? Who does it affect if it doesn’t happen immediately?

Of course, it’s vital to ask your line manager’s advice about prioritising requests, but he or she will be more impressed if you come to them with a suggested solution, rather than just a problem.

    Rethinking your life at work

Of course, if you’ve taken all the suggested steps but you’re still aren’t enjoying your work, then perhaps it’s time to consider a job move.

You might prefer a different role within IT or a different type of organisation – perhaps of a different size or in a different industry. Sherridan Hughes adds, “Being mismatched to your role or organisation can result in significant feelings of stress. Within IT there are many different roles: web developer jobs, for example, are more creative, while IT project manager jobs are more people-focused. Consider your areas of strength and where you would like your IT career to develop, and then plan a move accordingly.”

Many people have been sitting tight during the recession and still believe it is ‘all firing and no hiring’ in the market – but you may be pleasantly surprised to find a new IT job that is a better match for your skills and personality – as well as leaving you a lot less stressed out.”

The handling of this calls for a different Perspective to work Culture, where one learns to  distinguish between Job,Work and Career.

Evaluation of personal Dispositions, Aptitude and Attitudes are called for.

  • Keep Your Respect, How

    Paying Respect
    Paying Respect, The Indian Way

As one ages, the question of keeping  one’s Respect really matters.

Though one may delude himself/herself that the opinion of others do not count, one knows in the heart of hearts that one looks forward to/yearns for it.

This is but natural as the Human Psyche expects approval to sustain its emotional needs.

At a young age it is in the form of ‘peer Approval’ and at later stages it is ‘Respect’.

It is a difficult Art to get respect and more difficult is to maintain it.

More so from one’s near and dear, despite the oft stated ‘true Love doesn’t need expression either in the form of demonstrated Love or Respect.

Absence of these, leads to Strained Relationships.

How to earn Respect and how to maintain it?

    1.By Strength of Character.

    2.Reliability.

    3.Resilience in  times of Adversity.

    4.The Gift of Forgiving.

    5.Tolerance.

6.Acceptance of what Life has offered.

7.Not offering Advice when not asked. When people ask you for Advice,it is generally for the endorsement their views.

    8.Knowledge.

    9.Humility.

I came across an article which was interesting and am reproducing the Excerpts.

“We need to take care of ourselves first, meaning we need to:

    • Expand our mind through learning and reading
    • Improve our bodies through exercise and healthy eating
    • Refresh our spirit through practices to center our soul and keep us on a purpose-filled path

Self-respect puts substance on our presence. It is not a one-time activity. It is a continuous flow of self-enhancement, self-awareness, and self-empowerment.

The point is self-respect needs to be at the core of how we gain respect in our community, workplace, family, and other places of interaction. Self-respect, however, is not arrogance. Arrogance rarely, if ever, inspires respect……..

Humility denotes self-confidence coupled with an understanding of place. By place, I mean we are not above others or certain standards. We hold ourselves accountable to a higher calling.

Humility is strength in who we are and what we are called to do while always being aware of how we fit into the world and support others around us. Yes, a long way to simply say “If you want respect, don’t put yourself above others in an inappropriate or superior way.”

Even better, as Kate Nasser recently pointed out in a blog post:

“Consider replacing the weak image of humility with a picture of its authentic strengths. Tapping others’ talents shows your confidence. Hearing others’ opinions expands your view. Celebrating the whole instead of yourself extends your reach.”………

To gain and retain respect, we need to act. Respect is about doing good works and inspiring others. It is not about recognition; it is about helping out and lifting up others. Our actions will really determine what level of respect we have.

    Our actions may include:

    • Mentoring others in the workplace or mentor kids who don’t have a father (seeThe Mentoring Project)
    • Volunteering at school
    • Getting involved in a community project
    • Starting a leadership group to raise insights
    • Smiling and engaging people in conversations
    • Doing something positive often!

Being active translates into doing more than the minimum at home, work, andcommunity. Respect gains more traction and staying power when our work is demonstrated more fully in more places…….

A way to think of these four practices for getting and keeping respect can center on four core questions:
