How Tirupati Balaji temple was saved Bruce Code Munroe Sadam,Prasad

Tirumala and Thirupathi temple of Lord Venkateswara/Balaji were administered according to Bruce Code, set by a Britisher in 1821 AD.

The Tirumala Thirupathi Temple adminstration was with the Muslim invaders after the fall of Hindu Kingdoms in the early eighteenth century,The Vijaya Nagar Empire.

The last Muslim ruler who controlled the Temple was the Nawab of Arcot.

The Nawab ran into debts and the East India company took over the temple to offset the dues.

However, the administration of the temple was taken over by the British Government during Queen Victoria’s reign,as the government felt that East India company should not run a Hindu temple.

The Bruce code containing 42 Rules, based on the ruled laid for Puri Jagannath temple.

Bruce’s Code is a set of rules for the management and administration of temples of Tirumala and Tirupati including the servants, enacted by East India Company in 1821 AD.

These were the well-defined rules formulated as a code having 42 provisions to ease the administration of temples of Tirumala and Tirupati on the basis of customs and previous usages without interfering in the day-to-day affairs

The point of interest is as to how Bruce came to form these rules.

    Read the information below.

Sir,I know you are in pain for several days.. I also know that you lost all your hopes of any recovery..But sir..Please listen to me and offer your prayers to Lord Sri Venkateswara of Tirumala temple..Tirumala is a Temple very near to this place and Lord Sri Venkateswara is the most powerful God in this world…Am sure He will save you from death..Trust me sir..”

With a little curiosity in his voice and a little dazzle in his eyes this time,Le Vellian then slowly turned towards the Tea boy and said “..Thanks my dear, but what do you want me to do for that..’..

With a smile, the Boy replied”..Thanks for taking my words sir..All that you have to do is to just offer your prayers to Lord Sri Venkateswara and request Him to heal you fully.. ”
And now with more hope in his voice,Le Vellian asked the boy..”Okay my dear..I would certainly do..But how to offer my prayers to a Hindu God… I have never done that before..You need to help me do that..”And this time Without seeking any permission from Le Vellian, the 12 – year old mystic Hindu Boy walked with all the divine command in this world to the bedside of Le Vellian; held both his hands first; brought them close to each other…

And later bringing them together,by creating a traditional Hindu NAMASTE posture, raised Le Vellian’s hands and turned them towards the direction wherein the most powerful Tirumala temple is located and surprising Le Vellian further, very loudly chanted holy Lord Sri Venkateswara’s most favorite sloka..“.. Vinaa Venkatesam Nanatho Nanathah.. Sadaa Venkatesam Smaraami Smaraami.. Hare Venkatesa Praseeda Praseedah.. Priyam Venkatesa Prayachcha Prayachchah. .”“.. Aham Doora Tasthe Padaam Bhoja Yugmah.. Pranamechcha Ya Gachcha Sevaam Karomi..Sakrut Sevayaa Nitya Sevaa Phalantvam.. Prayachcha Prayachcha Prabho Venkatesaa..
Amazing was the boy to the eyes of Le Vellian that moment..After completing the chanting of the divine sloka, the Boy,still holding a much surprised Le Vellian’s hands, closed his eyes for a few moments and silently offered his personal prayers to Lord Sri Venkateswara. .

Furthermore amazed at the command with which the Hindu boy held both his hands and also at the ease with which he had chanted the intricate Sanskrit sloka,Le Vellian slowly got up in his bed; turned both his hands that were still held in a NAMASTE posture towards the smiling mystic boy and offered him his salutations. .PEACEAfter that divine drama..

Le Vellian who had lost all his hopes of any recovery from that near dead situation had quite miraculously regained a complete normalcy in just about a few days time..
This miraculous recovery of Le Vellian shocked the British Army Doctors who have by then had literally written him off as a medical ‘case of complete hopelessness beyond recovery’..

Much later,as he could not personally visit the Tirumala temple due to his job constraints, Le Vellian requested his friend,an Indian soldier by name Ramachandra Ganesh,to visit the Tirumala hill Shrine on his behalf and offer the holy Lord Sri Venkateswara what he promised to offer…EPILOGUE

“Vinaa Venkatesam” sloka although is an integral part of Sri Venkateswara Suprabhatham, was however written and recited first by Sri Markandeya Maharshi, when He visited the Tirumala hills and offered this sloka to Lord Sri Venkateswara. .PERIOD
In the later period, the story of Le Vellian’s miraculous recovery reached the governing authorities of the British Kingdom..In 1801,after having known the sanctity and powers of Lord Sri Venkateswara and the Tirumala Temple, the British took over the administration of the Temple from the hands of the Nawabs of Arcot for lack of discipline and misappropriation of funds in the Temple..

Later in 1821,strictly in accordance with the norms of the Tirumala Temple, the British introduced what is called the Bruce Code..This code has 42 provisions formulated in it with well defined customs and duties meant both for the Tirumala Temple as well as for the Hindu officials working there..

Quite surprisingly, the ruthless British, known for their iconoclastic nature, never interfered with the day to day affairs and rituals of the Tirumala Temple except taking care of it’s administration. .After that divine incident, renowned British personalities like Sir Thomas Monroe and Colonel Geo Stratten went on to become great devotees of Lord Sri Venkateswara. ..

  • Inside Thirupati Garbha Gruha 3 Venkateswaras And ….

The sanctum of Thirupathi Venakateswara, Balaji contains the Idol of Lord Venkateswara and two more Idols of Srinivasa.

Such is the imposing and divine presence of Lord Balaji with His stunning looks, we often miss what else is present in His Sanctum!

    Vishnu's Discus.
    Vishnu’s Discus.gif

There are three idols of Lord Balaji, Srinivasa.

    They are,

    1.Sri Bhoga Srinivasa,

    2) Ugra Srinivasa,

Legend has it that fire broke out in the village destroying houses during Brahmotsavam at Tirumala in the 14th century A.D. When prayers were offered to the God, a@ vision appeared to a devotee with a message from Lord Srinivasa himself. With the change in times, the Ugra Srinivasa idol could no longer remain the processibon idol and a new idol would be found as utsava murti (Malayappa swami). The Ugra Srinivasa idol is no longer brought out of the temple after sunrise and it is believed that sunrays touching the idol would spark fire in the temple complex.

    3) Koluvu Srinivasa,

    4) Sri Malayappa,

    5) Sri Krishna,

6)Srirama, Sita, Lakshmana and Sugreeva and

    7) Sri Chakrattalvar. ‘

It is rare to find seven idols in a Garbha Gruha.

    Three of Srinivasa are found.

Srinivasa is an Avatar of Vishnu.

Vishnu, though according to functions is  Kshatria, because He protects like a father, the term Vishnu is from Jishnu, meaning one who supports,The Vishnu Purana is classified as Sattvic , not Rajasic as protection is the function of a King with Compassion,Kshama, the ability to forgive.

Yet in Thirupati we find Bhoga Srinivasa given the first place.

    Bhoga means enjoyment.

In Srinivasa avatar ,His specific purpose has been to shower  Kshama and Blessings and He enjoys it.

Hence Bhoga Srinivasa gets the priority.

Ugra,Srinivasa represents His aspect of unforgiving anger.

Many are not aware of this aspect of Lod Balaji,Srinivasa.

As much as He is known for His munificence,He does not forgive a forget a slight nor goes any of the dues to Him by the Devotees, uncollected.

If one has dues to Him ,like a vow taken to visit Thirupati or forgets to offer money if one has taken a vow to do so.

Normally the signal he is not pleased with you in fulfilling your vow to Him, is your getting inexplicable stomach ailments.

The solution is to fulfill your vow.

Then, as a Father He would ignore your omission and shower you with His Grace.

This,I have experienced personally and also from others.

These do not have any scientific or even religious explanation.

    Period.

As to me ,if my issue is resolved it is more than enough, I do not waste my time how and why  the problem is solved.

    Not very rational,

    Isn’t it?

That is  way the things are.

    ‘Koluvu Srnivasa is Utsava Murthy.

I am researching into the presence of Rama,Sita,Sugreeva and Chakkarathalvar in the Sanctum.

They,in my opinion, have a historical connection.

    Shall write.

    Bhoga Srinivasa Murti:
Sri Bhoga Srinivasa Idol is a true copy of the Dhruva Bera(Main Deity) except that the Sanku and Chakra are permanently fixed in the case of Bhoga Srinivasa. Sri Bhoga Srinivasa gets Abhishekam every morning unlike the Dhruva Bera to which Abhishekam is performed only on Fridays.
Ekanta Seva is performed to Sri Bhoga Srinivasa. During Ekanta Seva, Sri Bhoga Srinivasa is placed in a Silver Cradle in the Sayana Madapam and offered milk to Sri Bhoga Srinivasa. Sandalwood paste is also offered to him every night. Ekanta Seva is performed to Sri Bhoga Srinivasa for all months in a year except Dhanurmasam in which Ekanta Seva is performed to Sri Krishna.
This idol is made of Silver and was consecrated by the donar, the Pallava Queen, Samavai in 966A.D. The donor’s consecration is recorded in an Epigraph on the northern wall of the Temple Prakaram which is perhaps the earliest inscription in the temple.
    Koluvu Srinivasa or Bali Bera:

Every day after the morning Thomala Seva, a darbar called Koluvu is held in the Tirumamani Mantapam where the deity is brought and is seated in a silver chair with a gold umbrella above him. This idol officiates for the main idol during this function and hence his name is Koluvu Srinivasa.

He is akin to the guardian deity and supervises the temple household, and keeps himself posted with all the affairs and revenue of the temple. The Panchangam or the Calendar of the day is also read out before Koluvu Srinivasa Every Day.

    Sri Malayappa or Utsava Murthi:
The first mention of this deity under the name “Malai Kuniya Ninra Perumal” is found in an Epigraph about the year 1339AD. The idol is in a Standing Pose and is a replica of the Dhruva Bera(Main Deity). The two upper arms hold the Sanku and Chakra, the lower right arm is in the Varada hasta pose and the left arm in Katyavalambite pose. This image has a very rich treasury of precious gems and jewels made of Platinum and Gold.
The idol of Lord Malayappa is about three feet height and stands on a lotus pedestal on a platform about 14inch height. To right is the idol of Sridevi about 30inch height. Sridevi left hand is in the Kataka hasta pose, the right is in the Gajakarna pose. To left is the idol of Bhudevi which is in standind pose. Bhudevi left hand is in the Gajakarna pose, the right is in the Kataka hasta pose.
In the order of preferences the idols that represents the Dhruva Bera’

  • Lord Balaji Feet Thirumala Man Made?

The legends of India and Hinduism are at once mind boggling to the extent of testing one’s imagination and at the same time most of them are verifiable with facts from antiquity, Astronomical dating, Linguistics, Carbon Dating..

Sreevari Padaalu Thirumala.Image.jpg Lord Balaji Foot prints.Tirumala Hills, India

.We have Human settlements in India,in Chennai itself dating back to 1.07 Million years!

We have Bhimbedka rock inscriptions dating back to some 50,000 years.

Lord Balaji Face in Tirupathi Hills.jpg. Lord Balaji Face in Tirupathi Hills.

We have references to Tsunamis in Tamil Classics, which are now being accepted by science as Facts.

Mount Toba’s ashes settled in Jwalapuram, Kurnool, Andhra and this is dated again to antiquity.

We have the Nazca lines of Peru which resembles Shiva’s Trident.

Lord Krishan’s  son Pradhyumna built a city in Russia.

Lahore Pakistan was built by Lava, son of Lord Rama.

The Mayas and Incas followed the Agama procedure in building their Pyramids.

In the Middle east we have the Shiva Temple now called Mecca.

Also we have a Shiva temple in Petra Jordan.

The US is not far behind nor are the Americas.

The Central American countries followed Ramayana and even Andal’s Thiruppaavai.

    Makara Sankaranthi was celebrated there.

And we have a Natural Vishnu temple in the Grand Canyon.

I have written on all these with authentic proof and Links.

About a couple of years back I posted an article that the Thirumala Hills in the Eastern ghats of India resemble the face of Lord Venkateswara of Tirupati.

I also posted some articles on some strange happenings in Tirupati which defy reason.

Mind you these have been documented.

Now as the Deccan Plateau is one of the oldest landmass of the earth and it has a natural arch, I checked whether  I could find any information geologically in support of the Legend of Lord Balaji.

In the process I came across information that Lord Venkaestwara’s Feet are to be found in the Thirumala Hills.

    And people worship this.

Though I had been to Tirupati many times I never knew of this.

    Srivari Padalu:

According to Vedas/Puranas ‘Srivari Padalu’ is the place where Lord Venkateswara Swamy first set his feet on one of the seven hills namely ‘Narayanagiri’. The footprint of the Lord is available in this place to the pilgrims with restricted access by T.T.D so that they cannot touch the foot prints. Pilgrims have to climb 300 odd steps to reach this divine spot from where a beautiful top view of the temple town ‘Tirumala’ is very delightful to watch.

What about the History of the Easten Ghat of which the Thirumala forms a part along with six other Hills?

The Eastern Ghats are older than the Western Ghats, and have a complex geologic history related to the assembly and breakup of the ancient supercontinent of Rodinia and the assembly of the Gondwana supercontinent.

The Eastern Ghats are made up of charnockites, granite gneiss, khondalites, metamorphic gneisses and quartzite rock formations. The structure of the Eastern Ghats includes thrusts and strike-slip faults[2] all along its range. Limestone, bauxiteand iron ore are also found in the Eastern Ghats hill ranges.

The Eparchaean Unconformity of the Tirumala Hills is a major discontinuity of stratigraphic significance that represents an extensive period of erosion and non-deposition. It is seen at the steep natural slopes, road scars and ravines in the Tirupati– Tirumala Ghat road in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh.

Which individual has gone up to the top of the Thirumala hills  to sculpt Two Feet  only to propagate Hinduism and Lord Venkateswara?

And what did he get out of this?

  • Tirupati Balaji Rings Bells Grants Permission 1979

The Tirumala Tirupathi Temple of Lord Balaji had to be closed down in November 1979.

Lotus feet of Lord Venkateswara,Balaji, Tirupati.Imge.jpg
Lotus feet of Lord Venkateswara,Balaji, Tirupati.

The Executive officer,PVRK Prasad mulled over this decision.

    Then ,

Finally, after every member of his staff left his chambers,a lonely PVRK Prasad stood up in his place and silently offered his prayers to Lord Sri Venkateswara..

“..Swamy Sri Venkateswara,as Your humble servant I have always done my best for You and for Your devotees..

Then why these hurdles for me and what is this ordeal..??..

I now need Your guidance and approval immediately..

    Please offer..”..

During that thick dark hour on the mid night of 7th, November, 1979…

Just a few hours before the commencement of the holy Varuna Japam..

The heavy Bronze bells, hanging in front of the principle deity of Lord Sri Venkateswara, started ringing on their own..

Thus signalling the holy Lord Sri Venkateswara’s much awaited permission and HIS most wanted approval for the Varuna Japam..

That was an amazingly mind-blowing miracle of Lord Sri Venkateswara very difficult for the humanity to understand..

    PVRK Prasad was speechless..

This truly amazing miracle occurred,in the holy temple of Tirumala,on the mid night of 7th November,1979

At that time, right from a street urchin to the holy Lord, the whole of Tirumala was in a very deep sleep…All the otherwise busy streets of the holy temple town were wearinga vacant look..

Except an occasional sound here and there, the whole of the Tirumala hill shrine wasfilled with absolute silence..

And exactly during that dark hour…

    Breaking all the silence…

This miracle occurred and occurred quite suddenly taking the entire hill shrine of Tirumala by surprise.

    Thong…Thonggg…Thonggggg..

The huge Bronze bells, that were hanging in front of the principal deity of Lord Sri Venkatewsara in the holy Bangaru Vaakili (Sanctum Sanctorum) of the Tirumala Tirupati temple started ringing on their own.without anyone touching them, sending waves of heavy metal sound across the whole of the Tirumala hill shrine.

The security staff, the police, the pilgrims, the officials, the temple staff, the Archaks and the Purohits, who were shocked by the huge sound of the Bronze bells, woke up startled and came running to the main Temple.

They all stood there, outside the temple, watching in utter shock and disbelief, unable to know  “..how the huge bronze bells – hanging in the heavily guarded and fully locked up Bangaru Vaakili (Sanctum Sanctorum) – could ring on their own, without any one touching them..??..”

Shocking them further, the bells rang in that fashion for a few more minutes and later stopped on their ownIt was a dream state for all those gathered therean unbelievably true state.

    Mysterious..Miraculous..And absolutely fantastic..

Later, for three full days, amidst chanting of the Vedic hymns, the holy Varuna Japam was performed strictly according to the Vedas and strictly according to the instructions given by the noble Sri Uppuluri Ganapati Sastry..

After that, once all the rituals of the Varuna Japam were completed on the third and final day,it was supposed to rain immediately..

But there were still no signs of any rain from any corner..

After the final rituals, carrying the Ceremonial Deities in their hands, all the Rithviks were returning to the main temple..

PVRK Prasad, the special invitees, the engineers, the board officials, the visitors, the pilgrims, the security staff, members from the press were also silently following them..

There was an utter disappointment in everyone’s face..

“Except tear drops in our eyes, there’s not a drop of rain anywhere nearby..” someone from the press commented..

    And then it happened..

    Perhaps the biggest miracle…

All of them were very silently walking back towards the main temple and were still hundred paces away from the actual destination..

Before they could realize and before they could run for their shelter..

    Making a huge thunderous noise…

    The skies opened up…

And it started raining heavily..Very heavily indeed..

An unbelievable sight… Seen to be believed..

None of them was carrying an umbrella and before they could all run into the main temple for shelter, they were fully drenched in rain..

    Joy.. Ecstasy.. Surprise.. Disbelief..

    Background.

Greatly disturbed by the acute water crisis,P V R K Prasad, the Executive Officer of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam Board called for an emergency meeting of his executive staff to discuss about the various measures that need to be taken to combat the on going water crisis on the holy Tirumala hill…

He had a marathon discussion with all his water board engineers.

Those engineers not only pleaded complete helplessness but also warned theirExecutive Officer, saying “Sir,the tanks and reservoirs on the Tirumala hill shrine have very little water reserves now..They can only be served for a few more days and not any more…”

At length they discussed about various other options to withstand the water crisis for a few more days..Every one suggested..”..more sanctions be imposed on the consumption of water on the holy hill shrine..”

In those days,in addition to the twenty five thousand visitors per day,the holy Tirumala temple town had about six thousand population living there..Water sanctions were already being imposed to the maximum level and any further sanctions will only paralyze the human life there…

    So no further sanctions…

    Then,what..???

Someone suggested to put a restriction on the number of daily pilgrims visiting the holy Tirumala hill shrine…

At that point, the Executive Officer said..”most of the pilgrims who visit Tirumala, plan their visit months in advance..It would be cruel on our part to stop them now..”

“..Secondly,there is no such legislation in TTD books to prevent any devotee of Lord Sri Venkateswara from visiting His holy hill shrine…Even otherwise,we are here to serve His devotees but not to put restrictions on their visits..”…

    He concluded the meeting…

Later Sri Sastry identified a few Rithviks and instructed them to go to Tirumala to perform the holy Varuna Japam.

After doing all the astrological calculations, PVRK Prasad decided to conduct the Varuna Japam on 1, November,1979…

But unfortunately the Rithviks, who were to conduct the Varuna Japam, could not come on time to Tirumala..

    And as a result..

The Varuna Japam was indefinitely postponed

A couple of days have passed…

In the mean time the water crisis,on the holy Tirumala hill, deepened further..Pleading total helplessness, the engineers of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam board told PVRK Prasad…

“Sir…it is going to be impossible for us to supply water to the pilgrims for more than a week now ..”…”And if that happens sir..”,they warned…

“The holy temple town of Tirumala Tirupati has to be indefinitely closed down..”

And in such case of an indefinite closure then PVRK Prasad,as the official head of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam board, would go down in the history of TTD as it’s most unpopular Executive Officer…

With a blazing Sun rocking the holy temple town of Tirumala and with no signs of any clouds anywhere nearby,PVRK Prasad was a disturbed man..

Then go to the beginning of this article.
