  • Who Is Somaskanda, Manmatha God Of Lust

There is a general confusion between Somaskanda and Skanda.

While Skanda is identified with Subrahmanya, Muruga, (there are two opinions on this), Somaskanda is a Form of Lord Shiva with Goddess Uma and Skanda, Muruga as child along with them.

    http://www.shaivam.org/gallery/image/forms/masoma1.jpg
    http://www.shaivam.org/gallery/image/forms/masoma1.jpg

This Form of  Shiva is the One that granted the boon of a Son to Lord Maha Vishnu.

While praying Shiva for a child, Vishnu did not offer due respect to Uma and was cursed to the effect that Vishnu’s son, who will be born by the Grace of Shiva will be burnt to ashes by Shiva Himself.

Manmatha was burnt to ashes during Shivas tapas, to be wakened  and be made Invisibl at the behest of rati, Manmathas’  Wife, before  Shiva’s Marriage with Uma.

And as Vishnu did not offer due respect to Her because She is a Woman, Vishnu’ son will be inciter of Lust towards women.

This son will be invisible without any form.

He is Manmatha, the God Lust.

Philosophically speaking  in the exercise of Leela of Creation  Sustenance and Destruction, attraction to women, Carnal impulse is essential.

If every one were to practice the Highest Vedanta and be come celibate the natural process of creation will not endure.

So desire is personified , that too by the Greatest Yogi, Shiva by His Grace through the Sustainer Vishnu.

Lust overrides all emotions and practices and is never really destroyed, the Invisible Driving Force.

So Hinduism prescribes channelling Lust and not eradication of it.

Senses are to be controlled not to be destroyed.

Proper channelization and  engagement in Gruhasrama lifts one spiritually.

Gruhastrama is given priority even over Sanyaasa in Hinduism.

Lord Brahmma was much annoyed when the great flood-Pralaya- took place and was in a dilemma as from where he had to begin creation again.  He surrendered to Lord Shiva for guidance.  Lord Shiva said, “Gather sand from as many holy places as possible and mix it with nectar and make a Mayakumbam-pot.  Fill this pot with nectar and keep the creation seed – Srushti Beeja.  Place a coconut on the pot and decorate with mango leaves.  Cover the pot with threads.  Keep it on an Uri so that it does not fall on sides.  This pot would float on the Pralaya flood.  I will come there.”
Kumba the pot fell from the Uri and floated in the pralaya flood.  A Linga appeared at the place.  Moon-Soma worshipped the Lord here, hence, Lord is praised as Someswarar.

  • Meenakshi Led Britisher By Hand His Grave Faces Her

In response to a Post I have written some time back ‘The Saint who spoke from the Grave’,I received a feedback from a Reader that Goddess

Meenakshi saved a British Collector from an accident of nature by leading him by her hand.

    Meenakshi Madurai

Though I belong to Madurai as ancestral Home, I have not been  aware of it.

By searching I found the information that this story is true and Meenakshi led  , Collector Rous Peter (1786-1828)  of Madurai, by hand.

And as desired by Peter his grave was built ,in such a way, that his were facing Meenakshi temple!

    Peter Pandian’

It is believed that Rous Peter respected and treated people of all faiths equally and this attitude towards the people earned him the popular name ‘Peter Pandian,’ says Ambai Manivannan, lecturer, Department of Tamil, Thiagarajar College .

    B. Raja, Joint Commissioner Meenakshi Amman Temple, says that Rous Peter donated a set of golden stirrups studded with diamonds and red stones to the temple. He quotes R.C. Shenoy from the book “Madura” where there is a reference to the donation made by Rous Peter.

Similarly, in the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple’s ‘Sthala Varalaru,’ there is a reference to an interesting incident where Goddess Meenakshi is believed to have saved Rous Peter from a fatal incident.

Apparently Rous Peter had the habit of going around the temple before beginning his daily chore. As District Collector, he was in charge of the temple ’s administration too.

The story goes that one night when the city experienced lightning and thunder, a three-year-old girl appeared at his residence and dragged Rous Peter by his hand outside the house. Soon after, the building collapsed.

    His last wish

According to Mr.Manivannan, following the incident, Rous Peter donated golden stirrups to the temple. He also wished that after his death he should be buried in a position that enabled his eyes to face the temple.

  • Square Hills 2 Shiv Lingas 8 Temples Cow Footprint Chaturagiri

Chaturagiri is in Tamil Nadu,India and is a mysterious Hill, where a Shiva Temple nestles among verdant forest.

Even in this modern age, it is a difficult terrain to travel.

    This slideshow requires JavaScript.

There have been credible reports of paranormal activity in this Hill,

Of one being able to feel the Siddhas presence, following Pilgrims, floating in the air, mysterious sounds reminding one of chanting mantras,

Sathuragiri is home to many Siddhas.

Many Siddhas, both formless and with form, perform their penance in Sathuragiri

It takes about two days to trek the Hill, can be done in day but it is tedious.

Cave of Gorakka, a Siddha is here.

There are also the footmarks of a Cow in Hill, presumed to be made by the Divine Cow, Kamadhenu.

    Legend:

The divine place Sathuragiri is surrounded by four hills, hence its name Sathuragiri or Chathuragiri.

It is said that the name Sathuragiri is derived from the Sanskrit word Chathur meaning FOUR.

Surrounding Hills form the Shape of a square, Chaturam in Tamil means Square.

    Other names for Chaturagiri.

    Legend:

Footmark (hoof-marks) of the divine/celestial/Indira Loga cow “Kamadhenu”.
Once upon a time, a devotee was on his way to Sathuragiri. In those days only a few people used to go to the hills, as it was thick forest with lots of wild animals. Since being new to the hills he soon got lost in the thickly populated mountains. Seeing this the Lord asks Kamadhenu, the divine cow to help his devotee and bring him back to the correct path. Kamadhenu immediately appeared before the devotee and lead him to the correct path. After bringing the devotee to the correct path, Kamadhenu, being a divine cow, had to travel back to its heavenly abode. In the process, of starting to fly, Kamadhenu gave pressure to her legs and the pressure was so immense that her hoofs left an indelible mark, that can be seen even today.

He named the child Pillai Lokachariar remembering his Guru.  The child grew in learning and was devoted to the service of the Lord.

Foreigners invaded Srirangam targeting the temple.  Lokachariar was 118 then.

Despite his age, he wanted to save the procession deity Azhagia Manavalan.

He covered the sanctum sanctorum of the presiding deity by a wall, installed some idols there and carried the real procession deities in a covered palanquin and moved towards south with his disciples.

He came to Kodikulam enduring untold sufferings.

He worshipped Lord Vedanarayana, hid Azhagia Manavalar and performed pujas.

The invaders came to this place too. Lokachariar took the Perumal and reached the top of the hill.

When he came down holding the plants and trees for support, he fell down.

Even at such a critical time, Lokachariar held Perumal closely on his chest to avoid any injury to Him and fell down with his back to the ground.

He was seriously injured. He lived just three days then and attained salvation on Jeshta Suddha Dwadasi in the month of Aani (June-July).

Small creatures as flies and ants that had his touch also attained salvation.

His disciples used the garlands and the vastras on Lord for his funeral and buried him there itself.

They stayed there for a month and completed the rituals as per rules.

They returned to Srirangam after 48 years with the procession deity.

Later, a separate shrine was built for Pillai Lokachariar in Kodikulam.  On Tiruvonam star days, being the birth of the saint, special pujas are performed in the shrine.  Perumal holds Mahalakshmi on His chest.  But Pillai Lokachariar held Perumal Himself on his chest.  Kodikulam (Jotishkudi) where he attained salvation is near Madurai.

Lord Vedanarayana is in a small shrine alone without His consorts.

Creator Brahma performed penance here as a Brahmin with one head.

    He is near Perumal.
