Katapayadi, Indian System Improve Memory Recall Rules

Sanatan Dharma teaches not only the procedures to realise the Supreme Reality, the causeless Cause of the Universe, it also abounds in practical tips to run the earthly life, be it researching Nature,Scientific concepts, lifestyle and ways to develop skills. One such is the Katapayadi system that helps one to enhance memory and recall.Ancient Hindus have developed systems to enhance memory and recall by designing techniques to learn by heart and recall instantly throughout one’s life what one has Learned. This technique is used to learn the Vedas, the Sacred text of the Hindus. Sacred texts of Hindus have been transmitted only orally over the past five thousand years and the Vedas are being transmitted by this method even now. Vedas are to be learnt only by hearing them. So they are called Sruthi, which is heard( Srothram).

Another technique iska·ṭa·pa·yā·di system (Devanagari: कटपयादि, also known as Paralppēru, Malayalam: പരല്‍പ്പേര്) of numerical notation is an ancient Indian alphasyllabic numeral system to depict letters to numerals for easy remembrance of numbers as words or verses. Assigning more than one letter to one numeral and nullifying certain other letters as valueless, this system provides the flexibility in forming meaningful words out of numbers which can be easily remembered. Katapayadi. This system was also used for passing secret messages.

Following verse found in Śaṅkaravarman’s Sadratnamāla explains the mechanism of the system.

    नञावचश्च शून्यानि संख्या: कटपयादय:।
    मिश्रे तूपान्त्यहल् संख्या न च चिन्त्यो हलस्वर:॥

    Transliteration:

    nanyāvacaśca śūnyāni saṃkhyāḥ kaṭapayādayaḥ
miśre tūpāntyahal saṃkhyā na ca cintyo halasvaraḥ

Translation: na (न), ña (ञ) and a (अ)-s, i.e., vowels represent zero. The nine integers are represented by consonant group beginning with kaṭapaya. In a conjunct consonant, the last of the consonants alone will count. A consonant without a vowel is to be ignored.

Explanation: The assignment of letters to the numerals are as per the following arrangement (In Devanagari, Kannada, Telugu & Malayalam respectively).

Demo of the system in mathematics and Astronomy.

Indian mathematics is the discipline of mathematics as it developed in the Indian subcontinent. The mathematics of classical Indian civilization is an intriguing blend of the familiar and the strange. For the modern individual, Indian decimal place-value numerals may seem familiar—and, in fact, they are the ancestors of the modern decimal system1.

In the classical period of Indian mathematics (400 CE to 1200 CE), important contributions were made by scholars like Aryabhata, Brahmagupta, Bhaskara II, and Varāhamihira2. Ancient Indian mathematicians have contributed immensely to the field of mathematics. The invention of zero is attributed to Indians and this contribution outweighs all other made by any other nation since it is the basis of the decimal number system, without which no advancement in mathematics would have been possible

  • Develop a Photographic Memory

I came across an article on the  subject of Memory.

It is a truism-one remembers to remember what one wants to.

There are various methods to improve memory.

    • Full Reading. In this process one reads the whole article in one shot keeping track of the meaning.
    • Part Reading.
    • One reads a part of the subject and recall it,then proceed to the next.
    • Repeat the process for part 2 ,and three and so on.
    • Mnemonic.Remember the keywords in the form of an interesting  word and recall the subject indicated by each letter.
    • Rote learning.
    • In this process one by-hearts  the subject

without understanding the meaning in some cases.

    • Much maligned, this process calls for special skills and once learnt by this method , you are not likely to forget.
    • I have learnt entire texts in Sanskrit  and Tamil and even now I can remember them at Will.

The Vedas, the Sacred Text of The Hindus is never transmitted in written form.

    They are  called  ‘Sruthi'(heard)

In fact they are to be learnt only by hearing.

There are various methods followed for learning the Vedas.

    One is called ‘Gana Paadam’

In this, one picks up the last syllable and joins it with the first syllable of the next text.

Then, the last syllable of the second and starts with the first Text.

Then goes to the Third ,joins it with the first and goes on as weaver weaves.

    Ex. Sanchame,mayachchamme.Mayachchame sanchame.

    Sanchame Mayachchame,Anukaamachchame,

    Anukaamachchame,Sanchame, Mayachchame.

In this way the words are segregated and meanings are clear and there is no chance for a wrong note as a wrong note is not allowed in The Vedas (Swara Bedam).

    Now to the Article.

    Things You’ll Need

    • A dark room.
    • A bright lamp.
    • A sheet of paper with a rectangular hole cut the size of a paragraph for the text you want to “photograph”.
      • 1

This system will take 1 month for you to develop, you must take 15 minutes every day and dedicate it to this training. For the first month, your eyes will take about 5 minutes time to adjust to daylight reading.

      • 2

Find a dark room in your house, free of distractions for 15 minutes. I use the bathroom. The room must have a bright lamp or ceiling lamp.

      • 3

Sit down next to the light switch with your book and paper that has a rectangular hole cut out of it the size of a paragraph.

      • 4

Cover the page, exposing only one paragraph and hold the book out in front of you. Close your eyes and open, adjust distance so that your eyes focus instantly with ease on the writing.

      • 5

Turn off light. You will see an after glow as your eyes adjust to the dark. Flip light on for a split second and then off again.

      • 6

You will have a visual imprint in your eyes of the material that was in front of you. When this imprint fades, flip the light on again for a split second, again staring at the material.

      • 7

Repeat this process until you can recall every word in the paragraph in order. You will be able to actually see the paragraph and read it from the imprint in your mind.
