I received forward from my brother’s son about a site which gives you information on Distances between cities, Transport,Road,Bus,Train, Air-Hotels ..!.
This information may not be new to the tech savvy but might be useful for ignoramus like me.
Here is the Link.
Rome Rio city finder
Rome2rio, based in Melbourne, Australia, is organising the world’s transport information. The company offers a multi-modal, door-to-door travel search engine that returns itineraries which may include air, train, coach, ferry, mass transit and driving options to and from any location.
Users of Rome2rio don’t need to search multiple websites to research and compare their travel options. Rome2rio provides answers to questions like “Do I have to fly, or can I go by train or car?”; “I’m going to Martha’s Vineyard: how do I get there from London?”; “I’m visiting six cities and towns across Europe: show me the best itinerary including air, rail and driving options”.
Rome2rio’s platform utilises a vast, purpose built, worldwide repository of air, rail, coach, ferry and mass transit routes. The platform is available for integration into web and mobile applications via API and White Label solutions.
China has opened the world’s longest high-speed rail line, which more than halves the time required to travel from the country’s capital in the north to Guangzhou, an economic hub in southern China.
Wednesday’s opening of the 2,298 kilometer (1,428 mile)-line was commemorated by the 9 a.m. departure of a train from Beijing for Guangzhou. Another train left Guangzhou for Beijing an hour later.
China has massive resources and considerable prestige invested in its showcase high-speed railways program.
But it has in recent months faced high-profile problems: part of a line collapsed in central China after heavy rains in March, while a bullet train crash in the summer of 2011 killed 40 people. The former railway minister, who spearheaded the bullet train’s construction, and the ministry’s chief engineer, were detained in an unrelated corruption investigation months before the crash.
Trains on the latest high-speed line will initially run at 300 kph (186 mph) with a total travel time of about eight hours. Before, the fastest time between the two cities by train was more than 20 hours.
The line also makes stops in major cities along the way, including provincial capitals Shijiazhuang, Wuhan and Changsha.

Here in India, to introduce a scrolling message for the Name of the Station in Trains is a Policy Decision ans the Indian Railways do not seem to know that it costs very little.
India is a country with a host of languages needs this service immediately.
There was some talk of having introduced this in some train.
This seems to be a well kept secret.
Refers to:
The new update to Google Maps shows you clearly any disruptions on the Underground that are happening at the time you need them most. To view the new London Underground Alerts simply click on a station in a timetable or in the public transport directions results.
As well as adding real-time London Underground service alerts, Google have also included planned engineering works for the weekends in the journey planner as well.
“When planning a trip for the coming weekend, we will show you the relevant subway alerts as part of the directions results. You can plan a trip for the weekend by changing the departure time in the ‘Get directions’ tab. Should there be planned engineering works for your route, you won’t run into any surprises on the day of travel.”
Overall fuel consumption may marginally be reduced for people may not like to travel in free transport for want of amenities and privacy;possibly private vehicular traffic might increase.
Where is the justification for taxing people who have private vehicles in the form of parking space fees, road up gradation etc as they are already paying road taxes?
Cars are also seen as status symbols as well;people who use them shall continue using them and more people would go in for purchasing vehicles.
Human Nature being what it is, people would like to stamp their individuality in owning cars. You can not quantify human nature and reduce it to mere numbers by imagining to follow ‘greatest good for the greatest numbers’
Sections of the society shall resent this as this move amounts to penalizing those who have succeeded economically.
Problem is free sops for election/ vote banks. We have already created a section that does not want to work because of sops.Do we want to be a nation of sloths and useless people who can produce nothing but live off a section of the society who have worked hard and become successful?
By the same logic shall we offer everything free where losses are insurmountable because of avaricious politicians and bad planning and administration?
Comparing small cities with hard-working people with our people is a basic fallacy.
Story:
Can Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses be made completely free for everyone to use? The idea might sound utopian, but experts point out that there is sound logic behind offering free public transit.
In light of Transport Minister K.N.Nehru’s announcement in the Assembly recently that the State Transport undertakings are set to incur a loss of Rs.1,000 crore this fiscal, the focus has shifted to defining this ‘loss.’
The Minister was essentially referring to the cash loss that is likely to be incurred, a little over one-third of which is due to the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations, and the rest due to operational loss. Are there any grounds on which this cash loss can be translated into social profit?
Since the benefits of public transit are broader than are apparent with strict financial book-keeping, is there a rationale for universal free public transport?
Can Metropolitan Transport Corporation buses be made completely free for everyone to use? The idea might sound utopian, but experts point out that there is sound logic behind offering free public transit.
In fact, a number of mid-sized towns and cities across the world already have free public bus, train, or tram systems. The city of Hasselt in Belgium, for example, converted its entire bus networks to zero fare in 1997. Public transport ridership increased by as much as 13 times by 2006, according to a study done by the Belgian government.
Even while making the bus services free, the authorities through a combination of measures have made personalised transport expensive. This includes earmarking certain areas where entry of personal vehicles is by a fee and levy of a green tax.
The free bus service results in various benefits for the residents such as better air quality, lesser congestion and reduction in fuel consumption, a significant shift to public transit, fewer traffic accidents and increased access to work places for the poor.
According to an annual survey of air quality conducted by Simple Interactive Models for better air quality (SIM-air), an NGO based in New Delhi, the health cost of polluted air in Delhi in 2009 was Rs.2,450 crore.
