  • Avoid. Kurkure Lays Burn Injurious To Health

Couple of days back I saw a clip by SUN TV  News at 7 pm about the side effects of Junk food, both local and international..

    Junk food Kurkure by Pepsico.
    Kurkure Junk Food.

The clip was about the high consumption rate of the junk food and the health hazards they pose to Health.

Of late consumption of Health food is on the rise.

I am providing a Link towards the end of the post on the Statistics.

In the TV Clip I was horrified to see a piece of chips/Kurkure( the image was deliberately blurred, I am surprised as to why should Media feel shy of showing the Brand name if its facts are right!), when lit b ya Match stick burned.

It was explained that the Junk food by MNCs contain harmful products including Plastic.

And they also contain high level of Salt, which is injurious to Heart in particular and health in general.

    I checked up the web.

I found that there is truth in the accusation.

There is a very high level of  Salt in these products.

There was an article in the Times of India on this some time back, and it quoted CSE report on Junk food.

Delhi-based NGO, Centre for Science and Environment, has alleged that leading food manufacturers are guilty of “large scale misbranding and misinformation” by claiming that their food contained zero trans-fats even though tests showed that they have heavy doses of it.

Most popular “junk foods contain very high levels of trans-fats, salts and sugar – which inevitably lead to severe ill health and diseases like obesity anddiabetes,” the CSE said on Friday. It released the results of laboratory tests carried out on 16 major food brands that the young particularly like, such as Maggi and Top Ramen noodles, MacDonald’s foods, KFC’s fried chicken and Haldiram’s Aloo Bhujia. These findings were disputed by the manufacturers.(TOI)”…

Twenty three (n=23) junk food samples comprising – Potato Chips (4), Indian Snacks (2) , Instant
noodles (2), Carbonated drinks (2), Burgers (6), Pizza (3), Fries (3) and fried Chicken (1) were
purchased from different outlets and analyzed in duplicate. Twenty three (n=23) samples were tested
for Salt, Total Carbohydrate, Total fats and Trans fats. One sample (Lays, American Style Cream &
Onion Flavour) was only tested for fats and trans fats. AOAC methodology was used and results are
    provided in Annexure II.
Salt: The National Institute of Nutrition(NIN) 2010 dietary guidelines recommend restricted salt
consumption and reducing salt intake to the minimum. The NIN recommends that the daily intake of
salt be reduced to 6 g per person per day. WHO reccommends 5 g per person per day.
Salt Content in the 22 junk food samples in g per 100 g of sample was in the range 0.2 to 4.2. The
highest salt content was found in Instant noodles; Maggi Masala 4.2 g and Top ramen Noodles 3.2 g.
Salt content in Potato Chips was 1.2-3.5 g per 100 g. Average salt content in vegetarian burgers (3)
    was 1.7 g and in non-vegetarian burgers (3) 1.5 g per 100 g. Average salt content in Pizza (3) was 1.0
    g; in fries (3) 0.4 g and and fried chicken (1) was 0.9 g per 100 g ( see Figure 1).”..(CSE Report)

    Conclusions
The results of the study indicate that junk food contain high levels of sugars, salt and trans fats. High
levels of trans fats are a public health concern due to its assiciation with Chronic heart diseases. The
trans fat content was highest in French fries (8.1% of total fat) followed by instant noodles (4.6% of
total fat) and potato chips (4.5% of total fat). There should be regulations to reduce trans fats in junk
foods and it’s should be properly labeled. 16

Similarly, high intake of salt is associated with hypertension. The salt content was highest in Instant
noodles (3.7 g per 100 g of sample). Consumption of a packet of instant noodles, therefore, will cover
about half of the daily salt quota. Salt content was not given by companies on the label. There should
an all India action plan to reduce salt in diets and junk food companies should be asked to label salt
    quantity of their package.

The provision of nutritional information is currently not a legal requirement unless a claim is made.
None of the takeaway foods like pizzas burgers, fries, and potato chips provide nutritional information
on the product packs. The absence of nutritional data per/100g makes comparisons between products
difficult. There should be mandatory labeling, at least for serving size , trans fats, saturated fats,
sugars and salt along with already mandatory labeling nutritional information for all processed foods
    including takeaway foods.(CSE India)”

The reply by the manufacturer to these allegations are,

But CSE found that Top Ramen Super Noodles (Masala) which claims to have no trans-fats actually contains 0.7 gram of it per 100 gram. Similarly, Haldiram’s Aloo Bhujia says it has no trans fats, but the study found 2.5 gram per 100 gram. PepsiCo‘s Lays (Snack Smart) was sold till February 2012 through huge advertisements to say that these chips are healthy because they have zero trans fats, but every 100 grams of it has 3.7 grams of trans fats.

The companies strongly refuted the allegations in the CSE report. Pepsico said, “All products manufactured by PepsiCo in India are fully compliant with all the regulations, including those on labelling, prescribed by the FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India).” It said that its products under the Lays, Uncle Chips, Kurkure and Cheetos brands are trans-fat free.

Nestle in its response said, “We respect the work being done by organizations like CSE to improve consumers’ understanding of healthy and balanced diets. Maggi is intended as a light meal and can safely be consumed as part of diversified balanced diet.” McDonald’s said, “In India we take a lot of effort to ensure our food is safe for our customers and have stringent quality processes at every stage. At McDonald’s stores we use RBD Palmolein oil which is naturally trans-fat free.”(TOI)

The companies blandly state that they can be consumed safely.

When you use the term ‘safely’, we know that there is an element of risk associated with it.

It is better to avoid these products altogether.

    Report by Hoax or Fact.

‘However, the story is a hoax. Kurkure is an evening snack that is manufactured using edible ingredients like rice meal, corn meal, gram meal, salt, spices, seasonings, etc., and is not dangerous for health. These are in fact the common ingredients in Indian kitchens as well.

Kurkure does melt when you burn it, but again most of the salty snacks do the same. It burns because it contains carbohydrates. The plastic like substance that you see in kurkure is nothing but starch. The shiny plastic like look of kurkure is that of dried starch, which is not dangerous for health. It is the same thing that you can see over starched cotton shirts, or on rice cookers after the water dries on the side of the vessel. Also, there is no mention of such story in times of India.

Kurkure does not contain plastic, the company officials explained the same. They believe that the hoax message should have been started by someone who does not like the brand.

  • Salary By PrePaid Cards Exploitation By Corpotations

    Prepaid card salary
The franchise owners, Albert and Carol Mueller, said in a statement that they comply with all employment, pay and work laws, and try to provide a positive experience for employees. McDonald’s itself, noting that it is not named in the suit, says it lets franchisees determine employment and pay policies.

People in the IT Industry talk about CTC(for the initiated in the IT Jargon , it means how big a you burn a hole in the Company‘s pocket).

This CTC is way below your expected take Home pay, when you calculated at the time of negotiating your Salary,  after confusing calculations like a Mobile Bill, excepting the man who raised it , none can understand it!)

Workers, even IT Professionals are workers, are being cheated , only thing is that they are unaware of it as the terms are couched in Jargons,

Now the Corporations have gone a step higher.

New York Times reports that Companies have resorted to issuing salary by cards to workers and they have to en-cash these cards.

Result, one more Company earns,I would not be surprised if it is also owned by the Company that issues the salary!

A growing number of American workers are confronting a frustrating predicament on payday: to get their wages, they must first pay a fee.

For these largely hourly workers, paper paychecks and even direct deposit have been replaced by prepaid cards issued by their employers. Employees can use these cards, which work like debit cards, at an A.T.M. to withdraw their pay.

But in the overwhelming majority of cases, using the card involves a fee. And those fees can quickly add up: one provider, for example, charges $1.75 to make a withdrawal from most A.T.M.’s, $2.95 for a paper statement and $6 to replace a card. Some users even have to pay $7 inactivity fees for not using their cards.

These fees can take such a big bite out of paychecks that some employees end up making less than the minimum wage once the charges are taken into account, according to interviews with consumer lawyers, employees, and state and federal regulators.

Devonte Yates, 21, who earns $7.25 an hour working a drive-through station at a McDonald’s in Milwaukee, says he spends $40 to $50 a month on fees associated with his JPMorgan Chase payroll card.

“It’s pretty bad,” he said. “There’s a fee for literally everything you do.”

Certain transactions with the Chase pay card are free, according to a fee schedule.

Many employees say they have no choice but to use the cards: some companies no longer offer common payroll options like ordinary checks or direct deposit.

At companies where there is a choice, it is often more in theory than in practice, according to interviews with employees, state regulators and consumer advocates. Employees say they are often automatically enrolled in the payroll card programs and confronted with a pile of paperwork if they want to opt out.”

    Is the Government awake?

They are planning additional pay out to these poor Corporations.

The Irish Independent had released an audio clip  showing two Bankers of Anglo Irish Bank.

They disclose that they misled the German Government on the state of their bank to get a bail out.

Having been pumped Money, these bankers are laughing at the stupidity of the Government,

  • Google Captures Identical UFOs,Thousand Miles Apart,Video

Google Street View captured two identical unidentified objects in Jacksonville,Arizona,US.

At both locations the same object appears in the sky hovering over the street and was first pointed out to ABC News affiliate KLTV in East Texas by Andrea Dover who noticed the first UFO while using Google Maps to get directions.

The red orb-like shapes are visible to all users of the application online at Jacksonville in Texas and at the Sky City Casino Hotel on 32 Indian Service Route 30, Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico.

  • Disillusion of a Software Professional, Is this Life?

Office of Dr. Philip Blake, Al Capone's 2nd Ps...

I have blogged on 11 July 2012, on ‘I would like to be poor’ where  I have made some comments reflecting on Life…..

“Life loses its charm and becomes tedious when one has everything in terms of material comforts.

    Some get things too easily.

People long for good food, shelter ,good clothes,Car,Gadgets likeMobile, iPod,Home, a Girl/Boy friend , a job which appears to be satisfying for a while.

    They get married.

They postpone be-getting children to ‘enjoy Life’

They work inordinate and ungodly hours, eat junk food, guzzle soft drinks ,Hard Drinks.

On Saturdays/Sundays, they wake up around 12 and laze about, go out for food, sleep , then go out for Dinner and watch movies.

Suddenly they realize that they are ‘burnt out’

They have no desire to do anything.

They leave jobs saying that they want to do things they always wanted to do, forgetting that they chose their Careers on their own and made decisions on their own over every thing.

They become abrasive and irritated and become depressed.

    This does not end here.

Once out of job, they try to do some thing which they think they like doing , get disillusioned shortly and start hunting for a job.

Some times they get it immediately, some times they don’t.

They become depressed further and consult a Psychiatrist.

The Psychiatrist tells them that they should get their priorities right and decide on what they like and start doing what they like.

And the whole Cycle begins again!

I saw a forward sent by my son, which I read to day, which showed me how the mechanical pursuit and unnecessary reflection can lead to disillusionment and how man reaches old age.

WRITTEN BY AN INDIAN SOFTWARE ENGINEER..
A Bitter RealityAs the dream of most parents I had acquired a degree in
Software Engineering and joined a company based in USA, the
land of braves and opportunity. When I arrived in the USA, it
was as if a dream had come true. Here at last I was in the place where I want to be. I decided I
would be staying in this country for about Five years in which
time I would have earned enough money to settle down in India.

My father was a government employee and after his retirement,
the only asset he could acquire was a decent one bedroom flat.

I wanted to do some thing more than him. I started feeling
homesick and lonely as the time passed. I used to call home and
speak to my parents every week using cheap international phone
cards. Two years passed, two years of Burgers at McDonald’s and
pizzas and discos and 2 years watching the foreign exchange
rate getting happy whenever the Rupee value went down.

Finally I decided to get married. Told my parents that I have
only 10 days of holidays and everything must be done within
these 10 days. I got my ticket booked in the cheapest flight.
Was jubilant and was actually enjoying hopping for gifts for
all my friends back home. If I miss anyone then there will be
talks. After reaching home I spent home one week going through
all the photographs of girls and as the time was getting
shorter I was forced to select one candidate.

In-laws told me, to my surprise, that I would have to get
married in 2-3 days, as I will not get anymore holidays. After
the marriage, it was time to return to USA, after giving some
money to my parents and telling the neighbors to look after
    them, we returned to USA.

My wife enjoyed this country for about two months and then she
started feeling lonely. The frequency of calling India
increased to twice in a week sometimes 3 times a week. Our
    savings started diminishing.

After two more years we started to
have kids. Two lovely kids, a boy and a girl, were gifted to us
by the almighty. Every time I spoke to my parents, they asked
me to come to India so that they can see their grand-children.

Every year I decide to go to India… But part work part
monetary conditions prevented it. Years went by and visiting
India was a distant dream. Then suddenly one day I got a
message that my parents were seriously sick. I tried but I
couldn’t get any holidays and thus could not go to India … The
next message I got was my parents had passed away and as there
was no one to do the last rights the society members had done
whatever they could. I was depressed. My parents had passed
away without seeing their grand children.

After couple more years passed away, much to my children’s
dislike and my wife’s joy we returned to India to settle down.
I started to look for a suitable property, but to my dismay my
savings were short and the property prices had gone up during
all these years. I had to return to the USA…

My wife refused to come back with me and my children refused to
stay in India… My 2 children and I returned to USA after
promising my wife I would be back for good after two years.

Time passed by, my daughter decided to get married to an
American and my son was happy living in USA… I decided that
had enough and wound-up every thing and returned to India… I
had just enough money to buy a decent 02 bedroom flat in a
    well-developed locality.

Now I am 60 years old and the only time I go out of the flat is
for the routine visit to the nearby temple. My faithful wife
has also left me and gone to the holy abode.

    Sometimes

I wondered was it worth all this?

My father, even after staying in India,

Had a house to his name and I too have
    the same nothing more.

I lost my parents and children for just ONE EXTRA BEDROOM.

Looking out from the window I see a lot of children dancing.
This damned cable TV has spoiled our new generation and these
children are losing their values and culture because of it. I
get occasional cards from my children asking I am alright. Well
    at least they remember me.

Now perhaps after I die it will be the neighbors again who will
be performing my last rights, God Bless them.

    But the question
    still
remains ‘was all this worth it?’

I am still searching for an answer……………..!!!

    START THINKING

IS IT JUST FOR ONE EXTRA BEDROOM???

LIFE IS BEYOND THIS ….., DON’T JUST LEAVE YOUR LIFE ……!!!!
    START LIVING IT …….!!!
LIVE IT AS YOU WANT IT TO BE ……!!!

    Regards,
    Anand

    Thanks Anand Ramanan

  • Man’s Conversation with His 12 Year Old Self Video

One can discern how much one has changed and how one’s views appear to irrelevant at a later stage.

If we could  do it periodically we may even improve.

“What would it be like if you could go back in time and talk to a younger version of yourself? Filmmaker and actor Jeremiah McDonald got to experience that process — in a way — thanks to a video tape he made for his future self back in 1992.

Twenty years later, McDonald cut together an interview combining footage of himself in 1992 (at age 12) and in 2012 (age 32).

The result is funny, poignant and ingenious in its presentation — which cuts present-day McDonald against his improvised 12-year old self two decades ago. As precocious as the younger version is, he also has one or two things to teach the older McDonald.

And at least they still share a love of British sci-fi hit, Doctor Who — though the younger McDonald has no idea how cool the rebooted version is going to be (and doesn’t get his elder version’s reference to the episode “Blink,” which features a very similar kind of time-traveling video conversation.)

Watching the short film, I was struck by memories of my own video experiments in elementary, middle and high school. Even in the age before YouTube, the art of self-documentary was alive and well — at least for some of us.

The video already has more than 14,000 likes on YouTube — and seems poised to go ever more viral.
