Kannadasan Meenakshi Kungumam
Recently we were driving down to Hyderabad from Bangalore.
My son was listening to new film songs,Tamil,Hindi and English.
When we started playing old Tamil songs ,my son likes them too, there was this line from the Tamil Song, ‘Aagayap Pandalile Oorkolam Pohuthamma’,
‘Meenavin Kungumaththai Naanaalavendumamma’
The song is between the lovers.
The lady says ’May I be Blessed with/rule the Kum Kum or Kungumam of Goddess Meenakshi’
What is conveyed is that ‘my husband Be Blessed with long life’
Here why does the poet say ( I would not Kannadasan a Lyricist, he is a Poet) the way he says it?
My son remarked that Kannadaasn is obsessed with Meenakshi.
I agree.
Yes , Kannadasan is obsessed with Goddess Meenakshi, Madurai.
The first reason is that as a Nattukkottai Nagarathar, as his community is,he is attached to Meenakshi and Umayal.
One may find these names among the women folk of the Nattukkottai Nagaraththaar.
Another reason is that there is something significant about Meenakshi, more specifically about her Kum Kum.
Kannadasan penned these lines as well.
‘Vannath Theroodum Veedhiyile Oorkolam Pohuthayya Sevvazhaip Pandhalile Lakshmi Kalyaanam’(Film Lakshmi kalyaanam)
“Ammuru Meenavaippaarthaalu Ava Kanuukku Varuthamadi’(Savale Samai’-Ammuru is a slang widely used for Nammuru, Our Town in Old Ramanathapuram District, especially among thr Nagarathaar Community)
‘Kungumam, Mangala Mangayar Kungumam(film Kungumum), to quote a few.
Lord Shiva is regarded as the One who is never born.
