  • Google Chrome Hacked.What about $ I Million Prize?

While it is nice to know that your product is good and better than your Competitors, some times you invite an opportunity to expose the chinks in your armour.

Google has found this out to its chagrin.

    Google chrome Logo
    Google Chrome.

Buoyed by zero-day attack ever hitting Chrome in the wild, and at the previous three years’ contests, Google got bruised badly at annual Pwn2Own hacker contest when Google got hacked .

It is wise that your friends overestimate  and enemies underestimate you.

Safari ,Firefox and Internet Explorer are grinning.

May be the hackers will be offered employment in any of these Companies or worse(better?) Google a la Facebook.

What about the prize money of One Million Dollars?

“It was a rare event. To date, there are no known reports of a zero-day attack ever hitting Chrome in the wild, and at the previous three years’ contests, Chrome escaped unscathed, even as Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari were brought down by exploits that allowed the attackers to take complete control of the machine running the software. The chief reason: Chrome’s security sandbox—which isolates web content inside a highly restricted perimeter that’s separated from the rest of the operating system—makes it harder to write reliable attacks.

“We pwned Chrome to make things clear to everyone,” said Chaouki Bekrar, CEO of Vupen Security, which wielded the Chrome zero-day an hour or so after the contest began on Wednesday. “We wanted to show that even Chrome is not unbreakable.”

A contestant in the second contest, which Google has dubbed “Pwnium,” was also able to bypass the Chrome sandbox so he could execute any code of his choosing on the underlying machine. Sergey Glazunov wasn’t on site to discuss the hack. Google has said only that for him to win the top $60,000 reward, his exploit was required to bypass the sandbox using code native to Chrome.

Bekrar told Ars that his team’s attack exploited what’s known as a use-after-free bug to bypass DEP, or data execution prevention, and ASLR, or address space layout randomization. Both mitigations are designed to prevent hackers from executing malicious code even when they locate vulnerabilities. He said it exploited a second vulnerability that allows code to break out of the sandbox. He declined to detail the vulnerable component, except to say it was found in the “default” installation of the Google browser.

That detail led several observers to speculate that an Adobe Flash plugin was the means Vupen used to access more sensitive parts of the operating system. While Chrome runs the media player add-on in its own sandbox, the perimeter is considerably more porous than it is with other components, security researchers say. Core functionality in Flash, for instance, requires the app be able to control web cams and microphones, access system state, and connect to display monitors and other connected devices.

Now in its sixth year at the CanSecWest security conference in Vancouver, the contest rules this time around have been significantly reworked. In the past, organizer Tipping Point paid as much as $15,000 to the first person who exploited a fully patched version of each targeted software. Competitors on Wednesday scored 32 points for zero-day vulnerabilities, and they received 10 points each for exploiting already patched security flaws.

Google has pledged cash prizes totaling $1 million to people who successfully hack its Chrome browser at next week’s CanSecWest security conference.

Google will reward winning contestants with prizes of $60,000, $40,000, and $20,000 depending on the severity of the exploits they demonstrate on Windows 7 machines running the browser. Members of the company’s security team announced the Pwnium contest on their blog on Monday. There is no splitting of winnings, and prizes will be awarded on a first-come-first-served basis until the $1 million threshold is reached.

Now in its sixth year, the Pwn2Own contest at the same CanSecWest conference awards valuable prizes to those who remotely commandeer computers by exploiting vulnerabilities in fully patched browsers and other Internet software. At last year’s competition, Internet Explorer and Safari were both toppled but no one even attempted an exploit against Chrome (despite Google offering an additional $20,000 beyond the $15,000 provided by contest organizer Tipping Point).

Chrome is currently the only browser eligible for Pwn2Own never to be brought down. One reason repeatedly cited by contestants for its lack of attention is the difficulty of bypassing Google’s security sandbox.

“While we’re proud of Chrome’s leading track record in past competitions, the fact is that not receiving exploits means that it’s harder to learn and improve,” wrote Chris Evans and Justin Schuh, members of the Google Chrome security team. “To maximize our chances of receiving exploits this year, we’ve upped the ante. We will directly sponsor up to $1 million worth of rewards.”

In the same blog post, the researchers said Google was withdrawing as a sponsor of the Pwn2Own contest after discovering rule changes allowing hackers to collect prizes without always revealing the full details of the vulnerabilities to browser makers.

  • Know Your Trackers Online.

    Collusion9Add on) Visualisation
    Screenshot of collusion visualisation.

Despite your knowing them and installing software to block them these trackers still follow you.

Mozilla introducedCollusion, an add-on for the Firefox browser that shows you how companies are tracking you as you surf the Web. A cool visual demonstration of the software illustrates all the links that form as you crisscross just a few popular sites online, including IMDB, the New York Times and the Huffington Post. The software shows the connections between sites you visit and third-party tracking and advertising networks such as Doubleclick and Scorecard Research. It makes plain the invisible web that has been woven through the Web.

The software was created as a protoype by Atul Varma, who explained in a blog postthat he “didn’t know a lot about tracking myself, so I whipped up a Firefox add-on called Collusion to help me visualize it better,” he wrote. “The results were a littleunsettling.”

Collusion will help you understand how you’re being tracked online, but it won’t stop it from happening. For that, you can disable “third-party” cookies on your browser and install other add-ons such as TrackerBlock. A number of internet giants have alsoannounced support for a “do not track” button, though that option may not become available until the end of the year.”

    http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/2012/02/28/how-to-tell-whos-tracking-you-online/?WT.mc_id=SA_Facebook

“The PrivacyChoice Chrome extension opts you out permanently from behavioral ad targeting by over 150 companies. While this does not block tracking, in many cases (but not all) these companies will refrain from collecting information from your computer when the opt-out is in place.”

    Does this include Google Chrome?

  • Browser problems and User Friendly Browsers.

All browsers seem to become problematical with add ons.

IE is the worst in this regard.

Between Firefox and Google Chrome the latter is better, but the add ons in Mozilla are user-friendly.

While on this , the Translation  by Google is horrible vis-a-vis ‘I am Translator ‘ which comes as an add-on to Firefox.(is it the same an add-on for Google as well?

By and large Google seems to be better.

The trouble all started when Microsoft integrated IE into Windows as a required component, and made it difficult to uninstall and use an alternate browser. Then there was the whole business with them exploiting their monopoly to try and push Netscape out of the market, and a lot of people started to view Microsoft as the evil empire.

    Microsoft Stopped Trying
By the time Microsoft released Internet Explorer 6 in 2001, complete with lots of new features for web developers, since there was no competition and they had a 95% market share, Microsoft just stopped trying—seriously, they did nothing for 5 years even after Firefox was released and geeks started migrating left and right.

    Microsoft-Specific Features
The whole problem with Microsoft’s innovation is that much of it was done in ways that didn’t follow the web standards—this wasn’t as big of a problem when Internet Explorer was the only game in town, but once Firefox and Webkit came around and started following the standards correctly, suddenly it became a huge problem for web developers.

    Security Holes and Crashing
Since Microsoft decided they didn’t need to try anymore, and they didn’t keep up with the competition from Firefox and other browsers, bugs and security holes just cropped up left and right—really terrible ones, too. For instance, this code is all that is required to crash IE6:

    <script>for(x in document.write){document.write(x);}</script>

In fact, the screenshot at the beginning of this section was a live example of testing out this particular bug.

IE7 and IE8 Were Too Little, Too Late
It took 5 years after IE6 for Microsoft to finally get around to releasing IE7, which added tabs and made the browser slightly more tolerable, but for web designers it was still a nightmare to deal with, and only complicated the issue since now you had to make pages render correctly in two lousy browsers instead of just one.

It took another 2.5 years for Microsoft to finally release Internet Explorer 8, which greatly improved CSS support for web developers, and added new features like Private browsing, tab isolation to prevent one bad page from taking down the whole browser, and phishing protection. By this point, most geeks had already moved on to Firefox, and then some of us to Google Chrome.

Here’s the Real Reason Geeks Hate IE

    image[21]

Just because we’re geeks doesn’t mean we hate everything that’s inferior and outdated—in fact, we often love retro computing—that’s why we love Atari, NES, Commodore 64, etc. We take pride in our geek knowledge. So why’s Internet Explorer a different story?

Here’s a couple of reasons that fueled our hatred of the buggy browser, and finally put us all over the edge:

Supporting IE is Like a Fork in the Eye for Web Devs
Here’s a sample of a day in the life of a web designer: You spend hours making sure that your page looks great, and you test it out in Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and even Opera. It looks great, awesome!

Now you open up IE and the page looks like somebody put it into a blender and hit the Whip button. Then you spend double the amount of time trying to fix it to look tolerable in IE6 and IE7, cursing loudly the entire time.

Geeks Forced to Use Internet Explorerimage
And here’s where we come to the real issue—the whole reason that geeks can’t stand Internet Explorer:

Geeks everywhere were forced to use Internet Explorer at work even when there are better browsers, forced to support it for corporate applications, forced to make sure web sites still work in IE, and we couldn’t convince everybody to switch to a better browser.

Geeks don’t hate something that’s inferior—but they do hate it when it’s forced on them.

    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/32372/htg-explains-why-do-so-many-geeks-hate-internet-explorer/

    Related:

According to Microsoft, some of the add-ons installed for both IE9 and IE8 can negatively impact the starting process of the browser, prolonging it more than normal.

“When launching Internet Explorer, you may notice that Internet Explorer takes longer than expected to start,” the company stated.

While older versions of IE could also be affected by the problem, the software giant informs that the glitch will be most visible in IE8 and IE9.

This is because of the evolution of IE, and how the latest two versions are designed to deal with Internet zones.

“This issue can be caused if there are damaged or incompatibilities with installed Internet Explorer add-ons,” Microsoft explained.

“This issue can also be caused if using Spybot and the Spybot immunization feature is enabled.”
