  • Temple Of Vishnu With Third Eye

I chanced upon an article where it is mentioned about the Temple of Lord Vishnu with the Third Eye.

I have visited Thiruvahindrapuram a couple of times and this is news to me.

    Vishnu Temple ,Thirivahindrapuram
Devanathar Hemambhujavalli, Vishnu with the Third Eye.

“Generally Lord Shiva is the only god to have the third eye (netrikkan) on his forehead, This is the only place where Vishnu is giving darshan having have the third eye (netrikkan) on his forehead, here Devanatha Perumal represents Lord Brahma having the lotus flower in his hand and representing Lord Shivan having the eye in his fore – head and representing Sri Vishnu along with Sangu and Chakkaram.
This temple also has huge image of Lord Hayagreeva, Vishnu with a horse face, he is the supreme lord of knowledge & was supposed to be the Guru for Saraswati. This temple is one of the 108 Divya Desam temples of Vishnu.
Tiruvahindrapuram is about 12kms from Cuddalore, 40kms from Pondicherry, 30kms from Chidambaram.

I am unable to authenticate  now.

    Will some one confirm?

I have received inputs from friends in Facebook on this, stating that there are some more temples where Lord Vishnu has the Third Eye..

It is incorporated after the close of this main post

  • The Eight Forms Of Bhairava Photo Essay

Bhairava is Lord Shiva in His Fiercest Manifestation.

It may be worth mentioning that Shiva is different from Rudra, which is yet another manifestation of Shiva( Actually the pronunciation is Siva).

Kaal Bhairava is an fierce incarnation of Lord Shiva. The term Bhairava means “Terrific”.

He is often depicted with frowning, angry eyes and sharp, tiger’s teeth and flaming hair, stark naked except for garlands of skulls and a coiled snake about his neck.

In his four hands he carries a noose, trident, drum, and skull. He is often shown accompanied by a dog. Once Brahma insulted Lord Shiva and his fifth head teasingly laughed at Lord Shiva.

From Lord Shiva came out the Kalabhairava (Black Bhairava) who tore off the fifth head of Lord Brahma.

On the entreaties of Lord Vishnu, Shiva pardoned Lord Brahma. But the sin (in the form of a lady) of beheading Lord Brahma followed Kalabhairava everywhere. Also the head of Brahma stuck to him. To keep away the sin and punishment which were chasing him, Kalabhairava entered the city of Benaras ( now Varanasi ). The sin could not enter the city. Kalabhairava was made as the Kotwal (Inspector) of the city of Varanasi. Bhairava rides on a dog.

A pilgrimage to Kasi (Benares) is not supposed to be complete without visiting the temple of Kalabhairava.’

    The Eight Forms of Bhairava.

    1. Asidanga Bhairava – Gives Creative Ability

    2. Guru Bhairava – Divine Educator

    3. Chanda Bhairava – Gives incredible energy, cuts competition and rivals

    4. Kroda Bhairava – Gives You the Power to Take Massive Action

    7. Bhishana Bhairava – Obliterates Evil Spirits and Negativity

  • Tila Ellu Sesame Seeds Hinduism Vishnu Sat Tila Ekadasi

There was a question in one of the communities of which I am a member on the place of Sesame seeds in Pitru Karma, Oblations to ancestors.

Hindus offer Sesame seeds,Tila in Sanskrit, Ellu in Tamil, along with water while offering their gratitude to their departed relatives.

    Use of Tila Hinduism
    Tila Ellu

The question was why we asked to use this in small quantities.

When Lord Brahma created the world, He created Five different varieties of Plants and Sesame was one among these.

This was considered to be very best among Grains, so much so Viswakarma,The Divine Architect, created Tilothama on Brahma’s request out of Tila,Sesame seeds.

In the Hindu epic Mahabharata, Tilottama is described to have been created by the divine architect Vishwakarma, at Brahma’s request, by taking the best quality of everything as the ingredients. She was responsible for bringing about the mutual destruction of the Asuras (demons), Sunda andUpasunda. Even gods like Shiva and Indra are described to be enamoured of Tilottama.

While a legend talks about a pre-birth as an ugly widow, another narrates how she was cursed to be born as a Daitya (demon) princess Usha by sage Durvasa.”

Being the very best only limited quantity is used as a practice,as more quantity is superfluous.

Let me add here for doing Tharpana on Fridyas , take some Akshta along with Tila while performing Tharpana..

There is a very important Vrata of Lord Vishnu called Sat Tila Ekadasi.

    Details as under.

This Ekadasi occurs in the Phalguna month, as the moon wanes at this time a very special atmosphere is created. The glories of Sat-tila Ekadasi are narrated in the Bhavisyottara Purana in a conversation between the sage Dalbhya and Pulastya muni.

“Oh esteemed brahmana!” began Dalbhya muni.

“People are most polluted in the age of Kali, there are sinful acts taking place at all times! Heinous crimes such as the killing of brahmanas, killing of cows and general freeloader are rife.

Please elucidate the process by which these perpetrators can be freed from their sinful acts.”

The sage Pulastya replied: “O my dear friend and fortunate one, by observing the vow of Ekadasi which falls during the waning moon in the month of Phalguna all sinful reactions can be burnt to ashes.

“On the Ekadasi day the aspirant should rise early, bathe and then worship the Lord with prayers: O Lord Janardana! O most merciful Sri Krsna! You are the deliverer of the fettered fallen souls. Please do not exclude anyone from your mercy, those drowning in an ocean of grief need your mercy most. O Supreme Brahman! O Supreme Personality of Godhead! O Lord of the universe! Please hear my prayer and grant me the boon of assisting you in helping the conditioned souls of the material world. Please accept my fidelity and use me as an instrument in the struggle against Maya. O dear Laksmi devi please be kind to this lowly servant and grant that he may be freed from all anarthas.”

“Thenceforth one should give charity to brahmanas, depending on means available one can offer umbrellas, cloth, shoes, sugar, or a pitcher filled with water. Cows of many colours may also be given and specific to this Ekadasi sesame seeds. By gifting sesame seeds on this day one can live in the heavenly planets for many years.

“Sesame seeds are used in different varieties on this day; one may bathe in water mixed with sesame seeds, smear sesame seed paste on the body, execute fire sacrifices with sesame seeds, offer oblations to the ancestors with sesame seeds and give sesame seeds in charity. By doing so one will free himself from more sinful reactions than he is able to commit. Thus this Ekadasi is known as Sat-tila.

  • Muruga With Bow Temples

I have posted an article on Muruga with Conch and Discus-Sangu and Chakra.

Lord Subrahmanya, Muruga is described as the God of Hills or Kurinji in Tamil Literature.

    Hill means Hunters.

So ideally Lord Muruga should be wielding Bow.

But what find is the Spear, Vel, adorned by Muruga.

    Subramanya with Bow
    Muruga with Bow Image credit.http://www.kaumaram.com/aalayam/index_cheyoor.html

This could be because of the fact that Muruga was known as Skanda during the Vedic period and is one of the Major Gods mentioned in the Vedas.

I searched and found that there are indeed temples where Lord Muruga has Bow on his hands.

One temple is located near Madhrantakam, near Chennai.

Twenty six kilometres off Madurantakam in the southeast direction, is Seyyur. It lies within Kanchipuram district, also known as Valavapuri or Valavanagar or Seikaiyampathy. The origin of the village dates back to the Pallavas and Cholas. It boasts of good roads, and is on the way to Marakkanam from Chennai via the East Coast Road.

Situated in the centre of the village, the Kandaswamy temple is also midway between the Siva and Vishnu temples. The temple faces east, but the entrance to the temple faces south.

There are two prakarams. In a small sanctum sanctorum resides Lord Someswar and Goddess Meenakshi. Lord Kandaswamy, the main deity, is in an unusual form with one head and four hands, with Valli and Deivanai in a majestic standing posture. In the south-west, there is a shrine for Muthukumaraswamy, also known as Samharamurthy.

A Siva temple has several goshtams, in which the parivaara devathais, as they are called, like Vinayaka, Dakshinamurthy, Chandikeswara and others are placed, just after the sanctum sanctorum.

In this temple, one can see Muruga in five different postures – Nrutta Skandar (dancing Muruga), Brahma Sastha (created from Brahma), Balaskandar; (child Shanmuga), Sivagurunathar (as teacher to Siva) and Pulinthar (vedan, hunter).

Perhaps this is the only temple in Tamil Nadu that can boast of captivating figures in this fashion. There is an image of Kazhukundran who is said to have made elaborate changes inside the temple. For instance, he made a new temple car in 1521 A.D., especially for use during the Skanda Sashti festival.

There is another temple at Villudayanpatti near Neyveli.

(This last stanza is normally recited by priests while giving back prasada after performing an Archana in all temples)

King of kings , we praise thee,

Who is the giver of all victories,

Who is the fulfiller of all desires,

    Please bless me with wealth,

    To fulfill all our  desires,

    Oh,  Kubhera*, we praise thee,

Salutations to the king of kings.

    * Kubhera is the Lord of wealth.”
