  • The North South Indian How they Befriend

    North Indians as South Indians
North Indians as South Indians Readers correct me but I can’t spot a single South Indian surname in the line-up; let’s not even get into caste. Oh well I can’t help myself so here goes, btw this could be marital or maiden names but Indians remember when you wear your caste names so proudly then don’t complain when it’s called up. Credit.http://www.brownpundits.com/2012/11/16/north-indian-punjabi-sindhi-high-castes-pose-as-chennai-beauties/

I venture to share some of my thoughts on the way the South Indians mix and react with each other.

I am making observations based on my  having covered the length and breadth of India over  a period of nearly Thirty nine years.

I have spent my time, while on business tour, in my Dealer’s Homes, partaken their Hospitality.

Before proceeding let me add that , by a North Indian, I mean those people whose mother tongue is not Tamil, Malayalam,Telugu or Kannada.

Some of these people were my business associates, others simple are those whom I met casually, mostly on Trains, Buses, Flights .

Then again there is this difference, those whom I met in their Native place in the North, and those who were settled in the South.

    I had a dealer in Bellary, C.G.Dass & Co.

I used to visit the Town once in 45 days ,regularly for a period of over six years.

Right from the second visit, the dealer’s son, Harish, A Guajarati, would come to my Hotel room, pick me up drive me straight to his Home and make me ear.

Then we would go out for a picture, only to return to his Home at the night. Some days I have slept in his house.

One must remember I was just a Salesman, not a big wig to who can grant favours to them.

And my knowledge of Hindi was and is horrible.

Tehn I had a Maharashtrian Friend Ashok Kamle in Adoni, Andhra Pradesh.

This again is a repeat performance of Bellary.

Another is Vasanth at Belgaum, a Guajarati who would not even allow me to check into a Hotel!

I had another friend SriKant Hanchate a Maharashtrian at Gulbarga, who would spend the whole day with me.

On my trips to Delhi, I was forced to stay with my dealer friend, a Punjabi, Harkirat Singh.

He would not have a No from me!

He would take me to Hindu pilgrimage spots.

He had taken me  Hardwar,Rishikesh,Kedarnath and Badrinath.

And I had a gentleman whom I met on the Train at night en route to Budh Gaya.

I was on my way, with my wife to Benares,Gaya and Allahabad and the Rajdhani from Delhi was expected to reach Gaya by 3.45 am.

Around Eight when the Dinner was being served a Young man of about 35, took the Dinner Trays from the Waiter’ laid it out in his aisle berth and made sure me and my wife had water by our side.

As my wife was allotted an upper berth, he exchanged his berth later one, without my asking!

I spent some time chatting with him.

In the morning he woke me up at 3.30 am, helped me out with my baggage, assisted my wife in getting down from the Train

He fetched us an auto rickshaw, gave directions to the driver, asking him to drop us at the address, telling him that he should  call him as soon as he dropped us and had the driver’s Phone number noted.

After ten minutes or so when we were reaching the destination the driver received a call from this Youngman who checked whether we had reached safely

and chatted with me for a couple of minutes.

    Remember it is 4am!

He is local Cable TV operator from Gaya and a journalist.

Next morning he sent a man who introduced himself as an Agent and booked us in a Train to Allahabad.

Wait listed at 300( I never knew WL can run into 300!) I was apprehensive.

The man was waiting at the Train Compartment before we arrived got us a Confirmed seat.

Do you that he refused to accept anything more than Rs 20 as his charge!

I get to meet a lot of my son’s friends who are North Indians working in Bangalore.

The way they mix and the respect they express, I have not seen.

    No pretensions, no air,

I tend to believe that by Nature North Indians are very easy-going , with out pretensions and has a tendency to befriend and help people.

However , during my career, I have found that the North Indians clinging together and try to exclude the South Indians from promotions.

I do not know which is real.

Is  that I have been lucky in getting to know these wonderful people?

I tend to take the view that by nature they ar easy-going, respectful and friendly.

Alas, the South lags behind in this!

  • Eleven Kinds Of Lullaby For Children

Lullaby is one of the most delightful forms of Literature.

    Lullaby in Tami
    Lullaby

Though I am very well versed in English, Sanskrit and Tamil Literature. I have a bird’s-eye view of them.

To my knowledge the kinds of Lullabies found in Tamil Literature seem to be unmatched.

I have not come across anything close to it.

Though Tamil and Tamils  are perceived to be highly emotional, thanks to idiotic self-styled fanatics of Dravidian parties who make a living off Tamil, the Truth is that Tamil and Tamil Grammar, though very rich in content, imagery, has a highly organised system of Grammar totally different from Sanskrit.

It is organised not merely by content of the poem but also relates to the Ages Of Man,Woman and Child.

Shakespeare would talk to us on The Seven Ages of Man in As you Like It.

Tamil speaks of the Ages of Woman.

    Read my post on this,

Lullaby forms an important form of Tamil Literature.

It abounds in early Classical Tamil , though it has gained momentum in the middle ages through the Bhakti Ilakkiyam(Devotional Classics)

This has organised Literature in such a manner that it has assigned different types of Lullabies to be sung for the Child.

As we all know, at least Grandparents know, that children love Lullabies.

As the child grows up, so is the ear for Music.

Hence the Lullaby one sings  between one year to another has to be different to keep the child engaged.

    Tamil has done it.

They have devised a system where various ages , corresponding type of Lullabies are listed and the parameters for them set.

    There are Ten.

    They are.

    Protective Age.
This  type is sung during the second Month of the Child.
Here as child is very tender, Gods like Ganapati,Siva,Parvati, Subramanya or Vishnu are invoked and prayed for the protection of the Child.

For a toddler of Five months.
The child would start Crawling, by folding one leg, leaning both the hands on the ground , shall thrust its face.
This would look like a typical South Indian Green Leaves plant fluttering in the breeze.
Meter for this type of Lullaby would be more bet oriented.
    The name of the plant ‘Sengeerai‘ is given for this stage.3.

Next is sung at the Seven Month.
Now the child would carefully observe the tongue movement of the Mother.
    this is the actual age of the Lullaby’,Thaalaattu’.4.

At nine months, the child would clap its hands.
This is called ‘Chappani’ or Clapping.
    Interesting to note the word in Kannada for Clapping is ‘Chappali’5.

At the eleventh month, parents beseech the child to give them a Kiss.
    This is named as ‘Muthaadal Paruvam’ Kissing Age.6.

This is the Thirteenth Month when the child is able to walk, albeit  hesitatingly, with it’s both hands outstretched, when parents call the Child to come to them.7.

At the Fifteenth Month, the Moon is shown to the child and the child invites Moon to come and play.8.

At the eighteenth month, male and female differentiation  is noticed and accordingly the stages.songs vary.
This is called the ‘Sitril Paruvam’
The child would a house of Sand , destroys it with its feet and rebuilds.

This is the Eighteenth Month when the child plays with a small drum.
    Siru Parai Paruvam.

    Playing with a Small Chariot.

At the age of 21 months , the child would play with a small chariot made of wood.
    Siru Ther Paruvam.

Then onwards two stages are given for Girls.

One is Kazhangaadal, playing with small pebbles or stones on hand ,tossing them while singing.

    Might use Flower balls.

Another is playing in a Swing.

    Oonjal Paruvam

Look at the way the growth of the child is observed.

We have lost these pleasures to TV and Video games.

I have not observed my children doing these.

In fact I never noticed them growing up for I was ‘Busy!’

I am on enjoying these in my Grand son and Grand daughter.

  • Half World Wealth With 85 People Beware Of Cataclysm.

Contrary to what many think the touted Economic Growth in The World has increased the divide between the Rich and The Poor.

With Communism long dead and buried, the Media in the hands of the Rich, one  does not get to know what the less fortunate have or feel about this economic prosperity.

last Sunday I watched a Talk show Neeya , Naana, in Star Vijay Tamil TV Channel on the Chasm that exist between the college Going youth of the affluent and the less fortunate.

The difference between the rich and poor  did exist even when I was in my college(1967-70)

But the conscious behaviour of the well to do was negligible.

Now the attitude and the behaviour of both the classes are belligerent towards each other.

So is the divide between the Rich, Lower middle and middle classes in India.

After the dawn of the IT Industry, a new class of neo Rich has sprung up, mainly from the lower middle class.

By nature, the Middle classes in India try to be what they are not even while when they were not affluent.

But with this IT money this has increased alarmingly.

Even for small things that can be done by themselves poor people are hired.

While one used to go out to buy vegetables by walk or at the most by a Scooter, people now use a car or send a servant maid.

They no longer buy cinema tickets by standing in the Theaters.

Nor do In find them stand in queue in Railway Stations to reserve tickets in advance, .

What can be bought in a push cart selling vegetables, people go to Supermarkets of even Hyper Markets to buy Vegetables.

Servants , Servant maids are engaged, in many cases as ‘living in ‘are engaged in house hold work and are paid anywhere between 5000 to Rs 10,000 per month.

Often I find these maids have children who have left their children in Free Hostels for study.

And they  seem to relish their jobs.

Those who employ them, the neo rich, flaunt their money carelessly.

    This is restricted to Homes.

One would this group in the malls, where they spend money recklessly, paying at least 200 % more for the same product that can be bought very economically outside.

Whom do you find at these Malls as Sales girls and Salesmen?

People of the same class whom on engages  for work at Home.

These boys and girls are of the same age group that buys things flaunting their money in a vulgar fashion.

These use a Five hundred Rupee or a Thousand Rupee note very carelessly and often leave this at Home around every place.

Leave alone the issue of tempting these needy into stealing, are these people aware the resentment they are building in the people who are working for them?

This, on a Macro Scale is being witnessed in the Society, Government,Media.

The Government aided by Media is obsessed with stock market and Gold Prices and you find extensive coverage of this news next only to Rapes ans Scams in the Media.

There seems to be no reporting on the issues of the poor or their grievances.

I have heard, with out their knowledge, the way these less fortunate look at these things.

Without going into specifics,  can say that they are seething with anger at these people, the system.

While we try to convince ourselves we have achieved what we have by hard work, they think that we have usurped these opportunities from them and the system is designed by us to cheat them, deprive them.

What they are waiting is an Opportunity and a Demagogue of Leader r to ignite a Revolution, which I feel will be cataclysmic.

On the national level we think we are growing.

But we are disrupting the Social order.

Whatever we may say it is a fact that the world is controlled by the Rich than ever before and is run by the Rich , of the Rich  and for the Rich.

    Read this.

50 % of World wealth is controlled by 85 Rich people.!

The world’s wealthiest people aren’t known for travelling by bus, but if they fancied a change of scene then the richest 85 people on the globe – who between them control as much wealth as the poorest half of the global population put together – could squeeze onto a single double-decker.

The extent to which so much global wealth has become corralled by a virtual handful of the so-called ‘global elite’ is exposed in a new report from Oxfam on Monday. It warned that those richest 85 people across the globe share a combined wealth of £1tn, as much as the poorest 3.5 billion of the world’s population.

Working for the Few - Oxfam reportSource: F. Alvaredo, A. B. Atkinson, T. Piketty and E. Saez, (2013) ‘The World Top Incomes Database’, http://topincomes.g-mond.parisschoolofeconomics.eu/ Only includes countries with data in 1980 and later than 2008. Photograph: Oxfam

The wealth of the 1% richest people in the world amounts to $110tn (£60.88tn), or 65 times as much as the poorest half of the world, added the development charity, which fears this concentration of economic resources is threatening political stability and driving up social tensions.

It’s a chilling reminder of the depths of wealth inequality as political leaders and top business people head to the snowy peaks of Davos for this week’s World Economic Forum. Few, if any, will be arriving on anything as common as a bus, with private jets and helicopters pressed into service as many of the world’s most powerful people convene to discuss the state of the global economy over four hectic days of meetings, seminars and parties in the exclusive ski resort.

Winnie Byanyima, the Oxfam executive director who will attend the Davos meetings, said: “It is staggering that in the 21st Century, half of the world’s population – that’s three and a half billion people – own no more than a tiny elite whose numbers could all fit comfortably on a double-decker bus.”

Oxfam also argues that this is no accident either, saying growing inequality has been driven by a “power grab” by wealthy elites, who have co-opted the political process to rig the rules of the economic system in their favour.

In the report, entitled Working For The Few (summary here), Oxfam warned that the fight against poverty cannot be won until wealth inequality has been tackled.

“Widening inequality is creating a vicious circle where wealth and power are increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few, leaving the rest of us to fight over crumbs from the top table,” Byanyima said.

Oxfam called on attendees at this week’s World Economic Forum to take a personal pledge to tackle the problem by refraining from dodging taxes or using their wealth to seek political favours.

As well as being morally dubious, economic inequality can also exacerbate other social problems such as gender inequality, Oxfam warned. Davos itself is also struggling in this area, with the number of female delegates actually dropping from 17% in 2013 to 15% this year.

How richest use their wealth to capture opportunities

Polling for Oxfam’s report found people in countries around the world – including two-thirds of those questioned in Britain – believe that the rich have too much influence over the direction their country is heading

  • ‘Stuck With Tune’ Earworm Why

You would have noticed that some songs, may be any Genre,Classical,Light Music or Film Music, or tunes get stuck with you.

On would try to explain away by saying that the Lyrics,Composition,BGM, or in the case of Cinema the visual presentation of the song or the acting that goes.

    Music Notes.
    Musical Notes.

But this can not explain why some tunes/songs remain with you or become a Hit.

Take for instance the song(?) Vaazhvil Kolaveridi’ in Tamil!

It is a classic case of a Hit for  unfathomable reason

Arguably it is  a very poor rendition in terms of Lines(I would not call them any thing else) or picturization.

Yet even people who do not know the Lyrics were captivated by it.

I am attached to some Tunes/Songs in Tamil,Kannada and Hindi.

But those are the songs, including Classical Music, that are rich in Lyrical content, Melodious tune and the Bhava or the expression with which the songs were sung.

As is usual with the West some people have researched into this, coming up with fancy terms like ‘Earworms’!

To me the reasons for any tune or song being attached to you, even to the extent of being heard in your mind are,

    1.Quality of the Tune.

    2.Lyrical richness.

3.In the case of a Movie, either any of these or all blended together with nice Visuals and acting.

4.A catchy tune, normally a simple tune, with few instruments.

5.Repetition of the song / tune to your ears , normally by TV, Radio Commercials.

6.There is yet another case where the lines’ or tunes keep being heard in your mind.

Add to this the Images which are formed in your mind when you listen or watch the songs in Films.

The slokas or mantras of Hinduism

Some slokas or Mantras have this attribute.

This also depends on the individuals’ disposition.

Sri Rudram , Soundarya Lahari .Sri Lalitha Sahsranama have this attribute.

My eldest sister , who is no more, usd to tell me she is hearing non stop the sloka ‘Bhavanithvam Dasemai'( Soundarya Lahari )in her mind.

The reason for this is that some Mnatras. Slokas are locked ina Mystical way, even Letters are locked in a Mystical way to penetrate into your consciousness.

That is what Mantra is all about.

I will be posting more on this,

Mean while read this from the Atlantic. com on ‘Tunes getting stuck with You”

    Story:

On some of its replays, I might be driven to sing along, or hum a bit, or tap the rhythm on the table, and it’s usually only when the music breaks into the external world in this way that I become aware of the extent to which it has ensnared my mind.

This odd cognitive phenomenon, although quite common, remained unstudied until recently, and even the handful of studies that approach the topic have remained at the descriptive level, failing to provide a theoretical account. There is, however, no shortage of words in general circulation that attempt to capture the experience. Germans call it Ohrwurm, and the English language has adopted the translation of this word, earworm. It can be called musique entêtante in French and canzone tormentone in Italian, which translate respectively to “stubborn music” and “tormenting songs.” Among scholars, James Kellaris refers to it as cognitive itch, Daniel Levitin as stuck song syndrome, Oliver Sacks as sticky music, and Lassi Liikkanen as involuntary musical imagery (INMI).

In 2008, Liikkanen surveyed 12,420 Finnish Internet users about their experience with INMI. An amazing 91.7 percent of them reported getting a tune stuck in their head at least once a week. 33.2 percent said a tune got stuck in their head at least once a day, and 26.1 percent said it happened several times a day. The fact that more than 1 in 3 respondents identified earworms as a daily occurrence, and more than 1 in 4 reported experiencing them several times a day, suggests that the phenomenon is not only widespread but also relatively frequent.

In 2007, University of Hull musicologist Freya Bailes used a different methodology to see if earworms are really as pervasive as Liikkanen’s account claims. She contacted participants at random intervals over a weeklong period and asked them to report their experience of musical imagery at the moment they received the request. The prevalence rate varied widely among participants, but was still surprisingly high, with the participant who experienced the least frequent imagery reporting it on 12 percent of the sampled occasions, and the participant who experienced the most reporting it on 53 percent of them. Between 10 percent and half of randomly selected moments throughout the day, in other words, were moments when people were experiencing musical imagery.

  • Seven Ages Of Man And Woman

Those who know English would not have missed  enjoying Shakespeare,.

If ever a Poet/Dramatist were to be found who could mirror emotions in simple powerful words it is the Bard of Avon.

I have some post on him.

    Da Vinci Mona Lisa.
    Mona Lisa

The most famous of his lines in As You Like It‘ on the Stages of Man is a piece in itself.

I am reproducing this with out comments or explanations for in my view Shakespeare is best enjoyed with out some body disturbing.( excepting some like Bradley)

    “All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
    They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first, the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms.
And then the whining school-boy, with his satchel
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
    Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
    Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper’d pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side,
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.”

If Shakespeare could do it,Tamil could do it better, in classifying the Chronological Age of man and Woman.

Tamil , a Language of antiquity, alive and kicking well, has made Life into an Art by its literature and its classification of Life in its Grammar.

Tamils have divide Life into two parts, one that deals with external activities expressed outwards, like War,Arguments,Valor,Philanthropy, called Puram(The term means ‘outside’).

Another is Aham(inside) which deals with emotions like Love, Despair.

Under Aham the chronological Age of Man and Woman has been taken to classify Ages.

    பெண்களின் ஏழு பருவங்கள்:-(Seven Ages of Woman)

    * 1 வயது முதல் 8 வயது வரை – பேதை-1-8 Pedha, an age when one does not know to distinguish things.
    * 9 வயது முதல் 10 வயது வரை – பெதும்பை-9-10,Pedhubmai, can differentiate but not very clear.
    * 11 வயது முதல் 14 வயது வரை – மங்கை-10-14,Mangai, has attained womanhood, but yet to fall in Love.
    * 15 வயது முதல் 18 வயது வரை – மடந்தை14-18,Madanthai. has started to develop feelings of Love.
    * 19 வயது முதல் 24 வயது வரை – அரிவை-19-24Arivai,has attained an Age where one has gone through the process of Love,separation.
    * 25 வயது முதல் 29 வயது வரை – தெரிவை-25-29,Therivai, has loved, successful, or lost but  knows Life.
    * 30 வயதுக்கு மேல் – பேரிளம் பெண்-30+,has seen it all, either a Spinster,( mostly), mature.

    ஆண்களின் ஏழு பருவங்கள்:(Seven Ages of Man).
