  • Wisdom Of Lord Krishna,Srimad Bhagavad Gita.Why? -1

Bhagavad Gita. The first Russian translation.
    Image via Wikipedia

    I am sixty now.

I have been thinking of writing on The Gita for about five years now.

I have been reading, not studying The Bhagavad Gita for the past 30 years.

But recently I found out, due to certain instances in my Life, to my shock, that I have been deceiving myself that I have read The Gita and that I am prepared to face things in Life as mentioned by The Lord of Enlightenment.

It had not gone into my heart.

It had  appealed to my reason alone.

I have never felt it with my heart.

However much one reads, studies these Great Sayings, so long as one grasps it with Reason, the ‘Sayings’ remain just ‘Sayings’

When one is hit by Realities of Life where one can turn to none for solutions nor can solve, The Gita comes to the rescue.

It tells you that things are what they are and it is your ability and ”vairaggaya’-determination, that can help you sail through.

    I am not a Scholar.

I, who was more an Atheist/Agnostic by Reasoning(so I thought) ,have been exposed to the Vedas by the Acharya of Sringeri, Sri Abhinava Vidya Theertha at the age of 29,.

Though knowing that I was not fit enough to learn the Vedas, because of my Drinking habits then and being irregular in my performing ‘sandhya vandana ‘The Noble Soul told me that I had the urge to know, despite fact that I quarreled with him on a minor point in Sastra, considering myself to be learned because I had a degree in Philosophy and that he will teach me whenever he visited Bangalore.( My father’s elder cousin, who was a scholar in Vedas  and me had an argument over an interpretation of a point in The Smriti and I suggested that we refer this to The Swamiji who was then camping at Bangalore.

When we went to meet him we were prevented from meeting him by those around him and were literally being pushed out.

    The Swamiji was near by.

On hearing my raised voice he asked what the matter was.

I explained him the argument I  have with my father’s Cousin, who was standing nearby.

The Acharya replied that he has no time( namakku purusath illa)

I retorted’ Hardly any people read the Vedas, that too at my age.

You are the head of The mutt established by The Great Shankaracharya.

You are supposed to live by Vedas and it is your Duty to clarify doubts on the Vedas.

Yet you say ‘you have no time’

I can only surmise that you do not know any thing about the Vedas to clarify my doubts.

Or you do not want to.

In either case you are unfit to occupy the Peetha of Sri Sankaracharya.’

    I walked out.

After about two or three hours a man from the mutt came to my room in the same area(i do not know how they found out my room) and asked me to accompany him to meet The Acharya.

I accompanied him with my Father’s Cousin with the apprehension that The Acharya was going to curse me.

The Acharya made me sit down in His presence and made me repeat what I said.

He  told me’ You are right. But at the same time you should also remember that I have to run this Mutt and by paying attention to people with money, though they are not pious, I  raise funds to enable me to perform Vedic karmas for World Welfare and help people who are needy and it helps me to perform Upanayana and marriage of the poor.

But still what you said is true.

I should not have allowed people around me to send you out.I am sorry.

Now you tel me what you want and he solved the problem ‘Incidentally my interpretation of The Smriti was right .

Then he told me that he wants to introduce me to The Vedas and that I should come to him whenever he is in Bangalore.

I told him that I was not Religious in the real sense of the term   and that I drink.

He told me not to Drink on the days I come to visit him and told me that I can leave and that I should come at 3 pm the next day.

I went to him , whenever I was in Bangalore( I was in a touring job, for about Six years.

Great men are just..what can one say…just Great!

  • Don’t Force The Bhagavad Gita On People-Lord Krishna.

There is a move by the Government of Karnataka to introduce  The Bhagavad Gita in Schools.

    Indian Philosophy is Highly personal.

It is meant for people who are intent on Spiritual Elevation.

Another point of note is that Indian Philosophy ( not Purana) never condemns one for not following its teaching nor does it declare that Hinduism is the ONLY path to Salvation.

    It is like a Doctor.

You are sick, you go to a Doctor,he prescribes medicines that are tested.

He does not force you to take the medicine.

    It is left to you..

After teaching The Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna,on his request(note-on Arjuna’s request only), after delivering 632 Slokas of a Total of 700 Slokas,Lord Krishna states in the 63rd  Sloka ,Chapter 18

    ‘Thus hath been opened thee
This Truth of Truths, the Mystery more hid
    Than any secret mystery. Meditate!
    And—as thou wilt—then act’!-Chapter 18. 63.(translation by Sir Edwin Arnold.

He leaves the decision to the individual.

    He does not force him.

Lord Krishna also lists  hose to whom the Gita must not be revealed.

    Idam te naatapaskaaya naabhaktaaya kadaachana;
Na chaashushrooshave vaachyam na cha maam yo’bhyasooyati.

    67. This is never to be spoken by thee to one who is devoid of austerities, to one who is not devoted, nor to one who does not render service, nor who does not desire to listen, nor to one who cavils at Me.-Chapter 18.67-Translation Swami Sivananda.

Leave this attempt to force the Gita.

It is not sanctioned by Lord Krishna.

    Do not create social tension.

Hinduism does nor believe in forced teaching or conversion.

Those who need Krishna , let them find him.

    Story:

Karnataka’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has landed in a row over its support to teaching of Hindu holy book ‘Bhagvad Gita‘ in schools.

The controversy took a new turn after Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishwanath Hegde Kageri said July 14 that those opposing the Gita teaching should quit India.

Kageri said teaching the holy book was necessary to inculcate moral values in students. He made the comment at a function in Kolar, 65 km from Bangalore.

On July 8, he had announced in Bangalore that the government was “open to making Bhagvad Gita teaching compulsory in schools”.

But Higher Education Minister V.S. Acharya said the programme should not be seen as religious teaching.

“There is no connection between Bhagavad Gita and religion. Gita has more to do with human values,” Acharya asserted.

    Not everyone is convinced.

Many see it as an attempt to “communalise” education, and are opposing it on the ground that it was unconstitutional for the government to back such a programme.

  • Dravida Vedas. Why there are no Vedas in Tamil?

Some time back a friend of mine called up and asked why there are no Vedas in Tamil.

The second query was what Dravida Vedas are.

    I informed him the details.

Since then I have been receiving  questions of the same nature( not through him or the same source).

The term Veda is from the Sanskrit root ‘Vid’ -To Know’

Anything that informs is Knowledge;whether it is correct or incorrect, Right or Wrong is another matter.

    So Vedas mean knowledge.

    There is a slight difference.

Knowledge that is eternal is classified as Absolute and Vedas impart this knowledge.

It is called Para Vidya as opposed to worldly knowledge(of senses) which is  called Apara Vidya or transitory Knowledge.

That Knowledge which speaks of reality is Para or Absolute Knowledge.

This is what the Vedas speak of.

So any knowledge that speaks of Knowledge of this nature  can be technically called Veda.

In Tamil we have Bhakti Ilaakiyam like Thevaaram,Thiruvaasagam and Naalayira Divya Prabhandam

While the first two extol Lord Siva, the latter is dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

They are named as Dravida Vedas in Agama Sastras.

In  temples only Agama is followed and not Vedas.

The reason is Vedas do not teach collective/public Worship.

It is not a social phenomena.

It is intensely Personal and the worship of Fire is stressed in the Vedas.

Agama Sastra was organised by the descendants of Sage Viswamitra.

It is said that Viswamitra banished some of his sons for questioning him on his decision to impart Knowledge to a born Panchama.

Viswamitra declared thatVedas must be taught to any one with Charactrer,Discipline ans Aptitude along with dedication to Guru.

    The Vedas emphasize this.

Therefore the sons were banished for not respecting the Vedas and father(Viswamitra).

Beyond Vindhya ,it was presumed to have been occupied by barbarians.

So Viswamitra banished his sons to the South of Vindyhas-Dravida-meaning South.

When his sons landed in the South, instead finding a barbaric culture they found a culture(Tamil) which was equal to Vedic Culture.

They blended the best of both.

They also noticed that idol worship was practiced.

    They incorporated this as well.

The wearing of Thiru mangalyam or Thali is a Tamil Concept as well as Pancha kachcha.

Vaidika marriage is over as soon as Panikgrahanam and Sapthapathis over.

All these were compiled by Aapasthamba which we follow to day.

Later to counter the influence of Vedas Agama System was brought into being where Public worship, Building Temples etc was incorporated.

However the Vedas took notice of this and followers of Aapasthamba incorporated this in Vaidiaka system as well.

But they did not intrude into Agama Sastra.

In every temple one would have noticed, after poojas are nearing the end they shall declare ‘Dravida vedam sandarsyami’-meaning recite Dravidian Vedas.

For Saivites it is Thevaaram/Thiruvaasagam; for SriVaishnavaas it is Naalaairam .

It may of interest that no Vadika is allowed by Sastra to perform abhiseka to the Murthy unless he is qualified in Agama Sastras.

Only Gurukkal are allowed for this.

Gurukkal do not have subsects, they have only Gothrams.

  • Amitabh Bachchan,Brother of Lincoln’s Assassin?No movie story.

Walter Semikov,in his Book ‘Born Again’ declares Amitabh bachchan to be the reincarnation of Edwin Booth, the brother of John Wilkes Booth, the man who assassinated Abraham Lincoln.

He also states that APJ Abdul Kalam as the reincarnation of Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore and Jawaharlal Nehru, the reincarnation of  Bahadurshah Zafar.

In researching reincarnation theory, which has been strengthened by latest true cases, he states these observations.

Leaving aside the veracity of these statements, it is undeniable that Reincarnation is true.

    Read my blogs under ‘Hinduism’

To understand whether human beings come back in another body is a fascinating — and controversial — subject that has attracted a lot of debate. Till the past few decades, it was dismissed as bunkum, fit only for potboilers and masala movies. But many, according to Semkiw, are taking reincarnation more seriously now — and coming around to the acceptance of rebirth as a natural phenomena. “This is primarily because of the extensive research done by Dr Ian Stevenson of the University of Virginia, who studied almost 3,000 children who claimed to have past life memories. In 700 of these cases, memories were so detailed that he was able to factually validate them,” he says. Stevenson’s book “Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation“, first published in 1966, is regarded by many as a classic work of reincarnation research. “Anyone who reads “Twenty Cases” with an open mind will develop a belief in reincarnation,” says Semkiw. …

Among the earliest therapists in the country, Newton Kondaveti, a Hyderabad-based doctor, left his medical career to focus on PLR. He now has a packed schedule of workshops , where people queue up to explore their past lives and also learn regression techniques. Kondaveti says there is a practical application of this knowledge. “Through PLR, one can get a clear understanding of why situations in this life are the way they are, and find solutions for the problems faced in the present life,” he says.

Many of those who have undergone past life regression vouch for its efficacy. Actress Celina Jaitly — who discovered in a regression session that she was a man in a past life — says that knowing one’s past life can be an extremely useful source of self-knowledge, inspiration and healing. “It helped me come to terms with several areas,” she says. “It helped me a lot in discovering and dealing with certain aspects of connection to my parents, sibling and other important relationships.”

Since regression essentially plays out in the mind, a common skepticism is that what passes off as a past life memory is just the mind playing tricks. But Kondaveti is emphatic that past life visions are not figments of the imagination. “When you imagine something, you will come up with something different every time. But in most people, the same visions are seen when the same past life is re-visited.”

Those who have remembered factual details from their past life through regression have often checked the authenticity of the information. Many have been quite surprised at what they found. Chennai-based Susheel Nair recalls seeing himself as a pilot , working with KLM airlines whose aircraft — a DC-6 passenger plane — crashed into an apartment building in Munich in 1951, killing all the 52 people on board. Nair says that after the session was over, he was unsure whether he had actually seen his past life. But when he searched for this information on the internet he could find, buried in a corner of the official KLM website all the details of the crash. It matched with what he saw, right from the make of the plane to the number of people killed. He says, “The experience helped me understand and deal with my childhood phobia of turbo-prop planes like the DC-6.”

  • Guru, Acharya,Upaadhyaayar-Kanchi Periyavar.

    Guru, Acharya,Upaadhyaayar-Kanchi Periyavar.

In India, especially in Tamil Nadu , we use the term Guru,Acharyar and Upaadhyaaar very loosely, often interchanging  one for another.

Vedas are Sruthi, that is,  it is not written or composed.

They are the Fundamental Truths and sounds that are captured from Aakaasa or loosely translated as Ether, by the Rishis or Seers for the Welfare of mankind.

    They are Eternal.

They are the Usvaasa and Visvaasa of Brahman, that is the inhalation and exhalation .

God is not present where Veda is not recited and Veda loses its potency without God.

That is the reason Temples with Samprokshanam done  as laid in the Agamas have special vibration and you can feel it.

The temple should have been built out of Bhakti and humility.

As an example I can cite the Brahadeeswarar Temple in Tanjore .

When I visit this Temple  I feel a sense of awe and grandeur but not peace and Tranquility of the Mind.

Whereas when I visit Thirumeeyachchyur,Sri Rangam,TiruvidaiMarudhur Thirukkadavoor and other temples which are reportedly built by Bhaktas or with a sense of dedication., I am at peace with myself and as Abirami Bhattar in Abiraami Andhaadhi puts it

Abirami Andhaadhi 94.’

Reason, Tanjore Temple makes me feel the Arrogance and the Desire of Raja Raja Chola to create some thing very big which would speak of his name forever more than Bhakti and surrender to God.

Legend has it that he had been directed to Poosalaar Naayanarby Lord Siva himself stating that He (The Lord )could not attend his Samprokshana at the Muhurtham set by him as he had to be in the temple built by Poosalaar.

When Raja Raja Chola went in search of Poosallar he found that Poosalaar was a poor man who said that he was building a Temple in his mind for the Lord in his mind and fixed the Samprokshanm in the Same Muhurhtam!

I am straying from the subject.

    Vedas have Chapters.

One who teaches these parts is called Upaadhyayaa.

He takes compensation for this service.

    ‘एकदेसम तु  वेदस्य वेदान्गान्यबी  वा पुन:: यूअध्यापथि वृथ्यर्थं  उपाध्याय: स  उच्च्यथे I’-Manu Smriti.

Whereas one who does Brahmopadesam at the time of Upanayana and follows up with Teaching of the vedas is Called Acharya.

Guru is one who seeks you out, if your yearning is sincere.

He knows your yearnings ,assesses your capacity and initiates you in the process that suits you, for individuals are unique ,so are the paths to Realization.

Guru is the Mentor while others are facilitators to study Veda.

Two Great Gurus are Lord Dakshinamurthy, who teaches you by Silence and Lord Sri Krishna who guides you by dialogue by replying to all your questions however impertinent or silly they might be.

Even Lord Krishna declares’ In Languages I am Silence’-Srimad Bhagavad Gita.
