Converts Van into Hearse, Becomes The First User

Talk of Truth stranger than fiction, this story tops the List.

A man who has planned and converted his VW Camper Van into a Hearse became its occupant after he suffered a fatal heart  attack!

Mick McDonald, 50, was carried from John Meynell Funeral parlour in Darlington, Co Durham, to Acklam crematorium in Middlesborough in the campervan hearse he built for his best pal Carl Bell’s business.

Carl, 42, from Middlesborough, County Durham, explained: “I have a wedding business that I use my VW Campervan for.

“I get a great reaction from people when I use it, I get smiles and waves from the public, it just makes people happy.

“I thought I could use it on someone’s final day, the hearse isn’t black, it’s white, and makes funerals a bit less sad.”

Carl then asked his best friend Mick to help renovate the old campervan into a hearse and the pair set about making it happen.

The business was named Retro Farewell and Mick then began to joke that the project would be “the death of him” and hoped he wouldn’t be the first man to be in it

Carl said: “That was always his line, he would always joke that I worked him too hard and the campervan would be the end of him.

“That’s what’s so ironic about him dying and now he is the first person to use the hearse on his final day.”
