The controversy that accompanied Don Brown‘s Da Vinci Code  has come alive again.

A new papyrus found indicates that Jesus was married.

US expert Karen King said it is the only text to suggest a marriage — as in hit book The Da Vinci Code.

“The excerpt, written in ancient Egyptian Coptic, reads: “Jesus said to them, ‘My wife — she will be able to be my disciple’.”

It appears to add: “I dwell with her.

See the following reaction from a Biblical Scholar.

Bible scholar Ben Witherington also urged caution.

He said texts of the period used “the language of intimacy” for spiritual relationships.

If the text/papyrus is found on Other Religions, especially Islam, it is Gospel.

” A previously unknown scrap ofancient papyrus written in ancient Egyptian Coptic includes the words “Jesus said to them, my wife,” — a discovery likely to renew a fierce debate in the Christian world over whether Jesus was married.

The existence of the fourth-century fragment — not much bigger than a business card — was revealed at a conference in Rome on Tuesday by Karen King, Hollis Professor of Divinity atHarvard Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

“Christian tradition has long held that Jesus was not married, even though no reliable historical evidence exists to support that claim,” King said in a statement released by Harvard.

“This new gospel doesn’t prove that Jesus was married, but it tells us that the whole question only came up as part of vociferous debates about sexuality and marriage.”

What a double standard?

  2. Mr.Shankarboregowda is denying the story without any evidence to the contrary. Although matters of faith can not be decided by ‘evidence’. But I watched the story of Harvard University scholar on CNN few days back in Las Vegas. The said scholar did not claim to be correct. He merely produced the papyrus piece and invited comments from others.Once again I wish to repeat that there are lots of controversies over various aspects of Christ’s life.I have a copy of The Illustrated Weekly of India of 1984 where the lead story was titled “Did Jesus Really Exist?” It had published photographs of some tombstones and some statues claiming them to be those of one ‘ Penthora’ , a Roman soldier. The story claimed that the father of Jesus Christ was this soldier Penthora.Again a German scholar Holger Kirstein, after many years of research had published a detailed book “Jesus in India: Before and after crucification”.I had seen an article in Hindi monthly magazine Kadambini( a publication of Hindustan Times group) in August 1995 wherein the writer had refered to a visit of Hemis Gumphas and Potala Palace ( Buddhist monasteries of Leh in Kashmir and Lhasa in Tibet respectively) by some European clergymen during seventeenth century where they saw 2000 years old hand written references of Jesus’ visit to Hemis and Potala. They wrote a book on this ‘discovery’.But the Vatican, when came to kanow of this book confiscated and destroyed all copies of the book. For anu seeker of truth a free debate and scientific and logical interpretatio of all the material is necessary.

    1. I have read papers that claim that Jesus came to the Himalayas for Enlightenment, had interacion witht the Lamas of Tibet and was influenced by Bhuddhism .
It may be noted the Sermon on The Mount contains the essence of Advaita, You are That(Tat Tvam Asi-‘The Kingdom of God is within You’ and the elements of Christian Ethicsis a mish-mash of Buddhism.
Again the story of Christ and the foundation of Catholicism was laid by Constantine three hundred years after the Death of Jesus when he initianted a conclave of 1600 people to organise a Religious Reference to enable him to keep his Kingdom intact.
However these are matters of Faith.
So long as it gives solace, the System is acceptable to the individual concerned.
One can not really prove Faith for It is beyond and much more than Reason.

      1. Yes you r right. There are many aspects of Christianity that resemble with Advait. Cristianity and the Church came to India much earlier than Europe. It had come to south India soon after Christ. The then rulers of the area not only permitted them to spread their faith but provided them land and other material help to esteblish the church. This was in perfect harmony with the Vedic teachings of ‘ekam sadh, vipra bahudam vadant’.(Truth is one, wise men describe it variously). This was this all embracing aspect of Hinduism witch was highlighted by Swami Vivekanad in his introductory lecture before ‘brothers and sisters of Amerika’ during world religious conference on Sept 11,1893 at Chicago. Incidently 150th birth anniversary falls on January 12,2013.But the irony is that today the Church has become a tool in the hands of ‘neo imperialists’.Proseletyzation is one such aspect.

      2. Agree.
As you may be aware The Bible was compiled by a Conclave of Cardinals under Constantine who wanted to keeph is Empire free of strife and prevent it from disintegrating.
I suspect that many points including the one about proselytization was introduced .

  3. JESUS NEVER MARRIED.THESE WESTERNERS DOESN’T HAVE PROPER THINGS TO DO.THEY ONLY CREATE NONSENSE TO THE PEOPLE.JESUS WAS A HINDU SAINT ORIGINALLY,BECAUSE HE WAS AN HINDU SAINT EUROPEANS KILLED HIM,THIS IS 100% TRUTH
