The US is influencing and steering Social Media/Network Opinion by  a Software and making Pentagon Officials to log in under different identities to control Social Networks.

A Software, Ntrepid, developed by a Corporation in California was put into action at a cost of US$ 2.76 millions.

The software creates fake persona (sock puppets) to inflence dialogue Online and plant American propaganda.

This was reported in the Guradian and this

“online persona management service,” where a military official can operate up to 10 different identities from all around the globe, infiltrating all sorts of social networks. ‘

As reported by The Guardian, according to Centcom (the division of the military that awarded this project) spokesperson Bill Speaks, “The technology supports classified blogging activities on foreign-language websites to enable Centcom to counter violent extremist and enemy propaganda outside the U.S.”

The Pentagon is developing plans to use social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter as both a resource and a weapon in future conflicts. Its research and development agency is offering $42 million in funding to anyone who can help….

Social media will change the nature of warfare just as surely as the telegraph, the radio and the telephone did, and the Pentagon is fearful of being caught short. Some of its goals were laid out in a document being circulated among potential researchers and is to be presented at a briefing on Tuesday in Arlington, Va., at the offices of the military contractor System Planning Corporation.

As social media play increasingly large roles in fomenting unrest in countries like Egypt and Iran, the military wants systems to be able to detect and track the spread of ideas both quickly and on a broad scale. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is soliciting innovative proposals to help build what would be, at its most basic level, an Internet meme tracker.

Social networks can allow the military not only to follow but also to shape the action. In its 37-page solicitation, Darpa described how a would-be high-technology lynching was foiled: “Rumors about the location of a certain individual began to spread in social media space and calls for storming the rumored location reached a fever pitch. By chance, responsible authorities were monitoring the social media, detected the crisis building, sent out effective messaging to dispel the rumors and averted a physical attack on the rumored location.

You do not know whether the opinions in the Internet are from real people and whether ‘Trending’  is influenced.

We are aware that television channels like FOX NEWS and TIMES NOW in India plant stories and one can see how television channels are influenced by the Corporations by listening into the Radia Tapes scandal in India where it was revealed the a Lobbyist was directing well known Journalists and TV channels to plant stories,in fact a Channel MD begs her to release salary for the staff at the earliest.

Hope at least some pele from the Fourth Estate are honest.

As for as Social networking is concerned , one has to take the discussion dispassionately and not be swayed by ‘trends’.
