    Science is yet to find out the causes behind Obesity , Weight Loss.

    Yet to find out if it is related to the Genes or the Environment, Diet habits.

    Corporate and Doctors have found this a good opening.

    They scare people, who are foolish enough to go to them for Advice.

    Doctors scare you with vague statements you are overweight for your Age,Height……

    Then they ask you the Diet you have been taking.

    Depending on the what you say, they suggest changes.

    If you want to check how they lie, tell the Doctor, not the actual Diet you are taking, but what you have read or heard of the Foods that reduce weight as the ones you are taking.

    You will be surprised at this answers.

    Next they tell you that it is likely to be a problem with Thyroid, ask you to run costly tests.

    Majority of the results will be negative.

    Then a suggestion , to be on the safer side, take some mild Thyroid Tablets, some for Hypothyroid, some for Hyperthyroid.

    They put you on a regimen of Diet, which , if a normal healthy individual takes continuously for a month, will develop weakness, loss of appetite,bloating.

    In some cases, people become emaciated and I have seen cases where people start falling unconscious.

    The Doctor then tells you that there are complications and starts further treatment, for complications that arose out of this crazy medication and suggestion.

    By this time you would have forgotten your complaint about Obesity or overweight problem.

    Then you have Dietitians.

    I am yet to see a dietician who is not either overweight or look as if they are about to fall sick.

    Most of these people are employed by Health Care Industries, Corporate Hospitals.

    They serve as His Master’s Voice, parrot what they have been trained to tell you.

    Now we have an ex employee of a weight loss company has sent an open Apology Letter.

    I’m sorry because I put you on a 1,200 calorie diet and told you that was healthy. I’m sorry because when you were running 5x a week, I encouraged you to switch from a 1,200 calorie diet to a 1,500 calorie diet, instead of telling you that you should be eating a hell of a lot more than that. I’m sorry because you were breastfeeding and there’s no way eating those 1,700 calories a day could have been enough for both you and your baby. I’m sorry because you were gluten intolerant and so desperate to lose weight that you didn’t put that on your intake form. But you mentioned it to me later, and I had no idea the damage you were doing to your body. I’m sorry because I think I should have known. I think I should have been educated better before I began to tell all of you what was right or wrong for your body.

    I’m sorry because I made you feel like a failure and so you deliberately left a message after the center had closed, telling me you were quitting. I thought you were awesome and gorgeous, and I’m sorry because I never told you that. I’m sorry because you came in telling me you liked to eat organic and weren’t sure about all the chemicals in the food, and I made up some BS about how it was a “stepping stone.” I’m sorry because many of you had thyroid issues and the LAST thing you should have been doing was eating a gluten-filled, chemically-laden starvation diet. I’m sorry because by the time I stopped working there, I wouldn’t touch that food, yet I still sold it to you.

  • Health, Fitness,Courses,Aerobics, Fruit Diet Non Sense

    ‘Health Conscious and people who follow Health Care(?) and those who do not agree with them’ was  a programme telecast by Star Vijay TV yesterday in Tamil.

    The people who were proud to call themselves as Health Conscious and ‘Health Freak'(their terminology) made a sorry sight.

    There were people who were practicing Aerobics( the demonstration was so funny , it looked as a kid jumping here and there and the lady proudly proclaimed she was paying Rs.1000/m for the course for fitness and she looked obese to the point of panting while jumping),

    to a girl who eats six meals a day,one with only fruits, next chicken without skin,salads,only Chapatis….:

    a man who dispose of garbage personally to reduce weight,another applies special(?) Oil before gardening to reduce tummy!!

    The List is endless and quite hilarious.

    Another is consuming tablets instead of Breakfast and he said there people who were consuming only tablets all the time instead of Food, reason being the tablets contain nutrients found in Food!

    More hilarious is are the reasons for following these Health care programmes.

    1.To ward of Cancer!

    2.Reduce Diabetes.

    3.Look trim.

    4.Prevent loss of Hemoglobin Count.

    5.Reduce Tummy.

    There were times when we used to go to a Doctor when one is sick.

    I remember , in my native place,, the doctor would give a Carbon mixture and if he goes in for an injection, it means , it is serious.

    His refrains were’

    Eat light,Sleep”

    Now we go to a doctor at the drop of a hat.

    Worse still we may not be ill.

    We think we might be.

    Then we have ‘Health Consciousness!

    If you are not well, you will become conscious of it and not the other way round.

    The Advertisements, Manufacturers of useless products and media  scare you to death and you immediately buy anything from something that can make you grow 50% Taller to reducing weight in one month.

    And internet!

    Any one who can type goes to goggle and sees results, follow them, without knowing whether the information they get is authentic .

    In the midst of our conversation,or should I say my monologue, my friend received a call from well qualified, working daughter that she was feeling exhausted and was on the verge of collapse.

    He immediately rushed to meet and take her Home.

    Reason for the complaint.

    His daughter has been a Diet of only vegetables and Fruits since last night, as advised in an article she found in the Internet.

    This was her effort at reducing weight and keeping fit.

    My daughter also went on a Diet of not eating Rice the whole day and was eating only fruits for about a week before she was exhausted

    The Human body knows how to take care of itself.

    The food habits we have have been developed over centuries taking into account various factors including climate.

    Being ideal weight is purely a matter of opinion.

    There is no preventive medicine for Cancer, Obesity,Diabetes.

    The suggested foods are only guesses and not based on correct findings.

    Before some one jumps the gun , please check the counter view on any diet and weight. Diabetes etc.

    Heart attack, Cholesterol .There is no final saying that cholesterol causes Heart attack  in fact it helps the Heart please read my post filed under Health).

    Take every thing in moderation .

    Don’t keep on thinking about illness and engage your self in work, some Physical.

    I am no statistician, bu can say ‘Statistics is like a Bikini, it conceals more than  it reveals.

    From my personal experience .

    My Father never even had fever till his death at the age of 78.

    And he used to take Meals in the morning around 8 am;Curd rice at 1pm

    Again Curd rice at night.

    Occasionally Snacks, idli dosa, adai etc.

    He can consume One Jack Fruit at 6  am and ask my mother  for regular food at  8 am!

    Quantity, well one can not imagine, such huge quantities.

    My elder brother is a Man of clean habits(80), he  is very regular in habits.

    He  does not drink,No Smoking,No Betel Leaves…nothing.

    He has Cancer for the past 4 years!

    I used to travel for my profession,

    Irregular Meals, Slleep, Drinking, Smoking, ( left Smoking 25years ago, drinking  8 years ago)Pan chewing, awake till 1 am.

    I have no Illnesses as on date.

    Excepting a Heart attack  about 10 years ago which I have totally ignored aftertaking drugs and finding them useless.

    By medical opinion I should have Liver failure, Hepatitis,Lung cancer, Diabetes,!

    Forget it.

    Do not bother about what the money mad doctors or the manufacturers’ say and Media , they have to write some thing to get circulation.

    You feel and know what is best.

    Go to a doctor as a last resort.

    Fie with these pseudo health acre ,Consciousness , unconsciousness.!

    The influence of the Western Food  on South India is  not noticed by many of us, as we are not conscious of  proselytism.

    We are being changed without being aware of it.

    First, the eating Habits.

    Normally  South India takes meals in the morning,refreshments in the afternoon and meals at night.

    This consisted of a healthy, yet not taxing to the stomach.

    Then came the habit of the British Culture.

    Breakfast-Are we breaking a fast from 10 pm the last night?

    Then Lunch.

    Evening Tea(?) substituted by us with refreshments.

    Then Dinner or Supper.

    I am not sure how many know the difference between  Supper and Dinner!

    Timings: Around  8.30 am,1 pm,4, 7 pm and 10 pm.

    Compare this with South Indian Timings ; 10 am,4 pm,7 to 8 pm.

    I had a friend of mine visiting me to-day and we spent about 4 hours chatting on a host of subjects, including our early child hood diet,the habits in our house holds being identical though separated by some three hundred miles,our college days,profession and of course children.

    The use of Internet in self medication is on the rise.

    The day before I read an article where a woman was reported finding on the Internet that the treatment being to her son/daughter was nor correct and she advised the doctor to have a  relook and the doctor did so and had to revise his  opinion.

    This is an exceptional case.

    As a rule it is only a Doctor who can advise on health issues, weight  included.

    As I wrote earlier in some of my posts the first results that appear in Google Results need not be correct and factual.

    They are mostly determined by the Writing style and use of key words.

    In any search one has to find an exactly opposite point of view and arrive at a balanced understanding, us not being specialists.

    Always refer to Doctor for Health issues.

    On Diet there is no conclusive evidence that Diet controls weight.

    The reason for gaining weight and obesity is debatable,genes,Food,periodicity of intake,expending  of calories,exercise or a combination of all these.

    Added to this is the uniqueness of the individual health,climate and habits.

    Food we take is organised by our culture  over a period of hundreds of years, by our ancestors, taking into account the climate as well.

    In India the South is normally there are only three seasons,Hot,Hotter and Hottest.

    Here you need more calories and quick release of Energy in the form of carbo hydrates .

    This is provided by Rice.

    Altering the eating pattern is harmful to Health.

    Without having a thorough understanding of these factors following a Diet course by referring to articles in Internet may prove fatal in some cases.Healthy weight management is all about energy balance. That means burning more calories than you’re consuming. So it is helpful to become familiar with the calorie counts of the foods you eat most often. Keep a food diary for a couple of days, and then look up the calorie counts of the foods you’ve eaten. You can get that information by referring to the nutrition facts panel on packaged foods, or by looking online at websites like the USDA National Nutrient Database. This will give you a sense of where your calories are coming from and help you identify some smart and easy ways to cut calories. For instance, if you normally drink whole milk, you can switch to fat-free milk and save 60 calories per cup. After a while, you’ll become a good diet detective and be able to estimate the calorie counts of your most regularly eaten foods.  Also, remember that the higher the fat content, the higher the caloric level. And of course, the larger your portion, the more calories you’re consuming.

  • Starvation Diet is Healthy? Indian Diet.

    The question of normal Diet is yet to be decided beyond dispute.

    Dietary requirements vary depending on Countries,Culture,Sex,Work patterns,Individual needs and climate.

    Blind imitation of Diets recommended by the West is no solution to India.

    I hold the view that out ancestors have tried by trial and error the present system of Food habits.

    In India we have various food patterns in various States and I feel that it the best.

    For instance South India being hotter than North one needs immediate release of energy by Carbohydrates, that is Rice.

    In North you need more of protein to withstand the extremes of Cold and heat.

    You take more of Wheat.

    I have personally experienced the effects of the food system recommended to us by our ancestors for each region and I can vouch that it is the best than anything else.

    I also have tried the Diet prescribed by the Sastras for Mahalaya Paksha for the entire 15 Days.

    I found my Mind to be calm, Unperturbed and body light.

    I was feeling very fine Health-wise.

    It is a simple Diet.

    For Lunch around 1230 pm , you take food which excludes certain vegetables like Potato, Tomatoes,Garlic,Onion,

    You use more of Moong dal.

    You take a light snack of 2-3 Idlis,or Dosas or Rice Upma or Fluffed Rice(Aval) and Fruits at night.

    That’s all.

    No Breakfast no munching in between.

    Hindus do we have a fasting day once in Fifteen Days,Ekadasi, on the 11th Day of the axing and waning Moon.

    On the next Day Dwadesi, one is expected to take diet in stages with a Gooseberry Chutney in Curds and Rice with fresh Greens (Agathi Keerai)

    Now I came across a news item that Starvation Diet may actually be good.

    Story:

    Pinned to my mother Shirley’s fridge on yellowing, curled paper is a handwritten copy of a two-week crash diet. It has been there since 1979, the year she decided she wanted to shed a stone in a fortnight. Its survival is testament to the faith she holds in it.

    Among other tortures while on the diet, she allows herself no more than half a grapefruit and a slice of dry toast with black coffee each morning. Lunch is a few cold cuts of meat and a side of vegetables, and dinner is similar. On a typical day this will amount to about 650 calories.

    Now 78, you would have thought she’d have deserted this gruelling regime and allowed herself to go into diet retirement.

    But like so many women of her generation, she believes the occasional fortnight of eating little is key to a svelte figure and good health.

    Such extreme slimming plans have drifted out of fashion in the past few decades. Crash diets are supposed to slow your metabolism down, leading to more weight gain when you stop.

    These days, the mantra recited by the medical profession is steady weight loss rather than starvation. And being curvy – a la Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks – is in vogue.

    Science reporter Michael Mosley speaks to scientists who have discovered that periods of eating very little or nothing may be the key to controlling chemicals produced by the body linked to the development of disease and the ageing process. This backs up  recent studies on animals fed very low-calorie diets which found the thinnest (without being medically underweight or malnourished) are the healthiest and live the longest.

    The key, say researchers at the University of Southern California’s Longevity Institute, is the hormone Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1). Mosley explains: ‘IGF-1 and other growth factors keep our cells constantly active. It’s like driving with your foot on the accelerator pedal, which is fine when your body is shiny and new, but keep doing this all the time and it will break down.’

    According to Professor Valter Longo, director of the Longevity Institute, one way to take the foot off the accelerator, and reduce IGF-1 levels dramatically – as well as cholesterol, and blood pressure – is by fasting.

    Pauline Potter became the world’s heaviest living woman last year, weighing in at a whopping 643 pounds. Now, Potter has her sights set on losing weight, and she’s turned to marathon sex sessions to help shed the pounds.

    In an interview with the UK’s Closermagazine, Potter described how her reignited sex life with ex-husband Alex has helped her lose 98 pounds.

    “I can’t move much in bed, but I burn 500 calories a session –- it’s great exercise just jiggling around,” Potter told Closer. Potter, who had been consuming 10,000 calories a day, hopes to reach her goal weight of 532 pounds with the help of Alex. The two have sex up to seven times each day.

    She makes sure to have some fun, too.

    “We love foreplay and massages and, as well as full sex, I pleasure Alex, too,” she told the magazine. “My bed is strengthened and, although I can’t buy sexy lingerie, I drape a nice sheet over me.”

    After meeting online in 2002, the couple married in 2005 and, when Potter failed to bond with Alex’s son, the two split up three years later. The break-up triggered Potter’s weight gain. She began consuming copious amounts of high-calorie foods and packed on the pounds.

    With all the extra weight on her, Potter became depressed. She contacted the Guinness Book of World Records in hopes that winning the title of “World’s Heaviest Woman” would shame her into losing weight.

    When Alex got wind of the publicity surrounding Potter, he decided to visit her and the flame was quickly rekindled.

    “Within the first day of being back together we had sex six times in 24 hours,” Alex told the Sun last November. “Even though one of Pauline’s legs weighs more than I do, we’re able to position her body to make sex enjoyable for both of us.”

    Alex, who weighs just 140 pounds, does most of the work in the bedroom.
