  • The Guide to Solo Travel for Women: 5 things to keep in mind

This is a Guest Blog by Manya Singh.

More than the thrill and challenges of traveling and trekking , is the personal safety of a woman that is more important when one does not know who a Rapist is.

And usually the people whom you know are the culprits as a recent rent study points out that it is the close relatives, about 60 %, who are responsible for misusing woman and this is followed by people one befriends people out of nowhere.

This article takes this fact into consideration, instead of being foolhardy in the name of Feminism.

Wish women follow this, not only while traveling even in the city where they live.

It is true that crime does not come with a forewarning, and a criminal is lurking behind us at almost every step of our life. So, a woman is quite vulnerable to those myriad numbers of stalkers, voyeurs and rapists. Even the thought of traveling solo can be daunting for a lot of introvert girls. But believe us, women are indeed traveling alone these days. I have this friend (a beautiful spinster in her early 20s) who recently went backpacking to Bangalore and traveled alone in trains and in buses. And she later told me that she had a blast.

    Woman Trekking alone.

Of course, solo traveling comes with a few risks. But as long as you have done your homework carefully, you are likely to end up on a winning note. Traveling alone can be a fun, especially if you are a carefree, fun-loving girl! But here are a few things you need to keep in mind, just in case:

    1. Travel to safer destinations: Traveling to a destination which is isolated and vulnerable is unsafe even for a solo man! If you are a woman, you should ensure that the city or the country you are heading to is right up there on the popularity radar.
    2. Take help of professionals: It is best to travel under some tour package so that you can be guided by your tour operator. It makes sense to have some helping hand by your side especially when you are flying to an offshore destination.
    3. Keep a pepper spray in your bag: Safety is a relative thing, and a beautiful woman may fall under the evil eye of a stalker during the most unexpected of times. It is always good to tread along the safe line. Better keep a pepper spray ready so that, if need arises, you can get away from his perverse clutches. This is a precaution and you may not need it after all.
    4. Learn to say no: At times, you may bump into a stranger (a male stranger) who may try to get friendly with you! There is no harm in forging friendships with a good bloke, but it would be naïve of you to accept unusual requests (like a homestay) from him (no matter, how charming he appears to your fluttering heart). It is good to refuse politely so that the person does not get offended. But just in case, he sticks on like a frightening creeper, you should be willing to bluntly say a big ‘NO’.
    5. Stay at reputed hotels: A woman is at her vulnerable best after the sunset. You may be ruing the extra expenses, but it is always ideal to stay at a resort or a hotel which is reputed. Staying at a cheap inn or lodge can come with some cons. There may be insecurities of certain kinds (like that spy camera in your hotel room, etc )! A branded 3-star hotel would keep you safe and happy! Besides, with a tour package, you can always book a room cheaply.

Finally, you got to remember that one cannot, after all, stop eating just because he is scared of indigestion! Similarly, you cannot stop traveling just because you are intimidated of stalkers! Believe us, life is evanescent! Make the most of it, before you run out of it!

  • Lord Vishnu Took River Cauvery His Mother Thiruindhalur

    Indhu means the moon.

As Lord Visnu received Chandra (Moon) from his curse, this place is known as Indhaloor.

Lord Narayana gave dharsan as Vennchudar perumal in the standing posture to the Moon god in Thalaisangaadu.

But here at this place he is in Veera Sayanam posture. There he was full of light being as Vyomajyothi piran.

But here he is full of fragrance (Parimalam) and hence he is called as Parimala Rangan.

He has 4 hands here. River Cauvery is under his feet here.

As he promised river Cauvery to increase here status, he made her as his bed at Srirangam, took her as his mother at Thirucherai and here at Thiru Indhaloor, he has taken river Cauvery above his head.

    Vishnu
    Vishnu

Thus gave her the status of river Ganges who is on the head of Lord Shiva.
As the perumal of this place, converted the position of river Cauvery and Lord Chandra into a pious state, Thirumangaialwar calls him as a Brahmin.

The vedas were created to instruct rules for human beings to lead a happy life.

The Surya and Chandra revolve around the world to give prisperity (like wheels ie Chakra).

Hence the vimaana of this place is called as Veda Chakra Vimaanam. Sri Rangam is known as Aadhi Arangam (first) while Thirukudanthai is Madhiya Arangam (Middle) and Thiru Indhaloor is known as Andiya Arangam (Last).
    Recovery of Vedas
From the puranas we learn that Brahma, Chandra, Yama, Ambareesha and Viswamitra were offering their daily workship here. Brahma was tutored to do his creation by Lord Ranganatha. But the two demons Madhu and Kaitaba, stole away the Vedas and disappeared into the sea. Brahma complained to the Lord who took Mastyavathar- fishform and retrived the Vedas.

In order to restore the original fragrance to them, the Vedas did penance to the Lord and the place was converted into “Sugantharanyam”. The Lord took his abode there and He came to be known as Parimala Ranganathar.

The Goddess came to be known as Parimala Ranganayaki.
The river cauvery, in order to get supremacy over river Ganga, offered penance to Lord Ranganatha here and was granted a boon.

Just like Srirangam and Kumbakonam, this place also became famous.

The Ganga is said to flow into the Cauvery during the Tula festival to rid herself of her pollution which she takes over from the people who take their bath in the river.

Hence the Cauvery here a bath in equals a bath in the Ganga.
Another interesting episode is connected with the life of Chandra the Moon.

He was suffering from consumption because of the sabams given by Dwajapathy and Dhatchan and was losing his form slowly

He was asked to take his bath here in the cauvery and offer worship to Lord Ranganatha.

He was eventually cured of his disease and the place came to be known as Indupuri and the Theertham Indu pushkarani.

In the Tamil month of Aiypasi on all the 30 days, the deity is taken to the banks of the river.

On the first day of the month and Amavasai, Lord Ranganatha comes on Garuda Vahana.
There are three prakarams in the temple. The little image of Kannan familiarly known as Santhanagopalakrishnan promises children for the issuless.

The plates that adorn the walls of the sannidhi have intricate workmanship on them.
Viswaksena, Yoga Narasimhar and Chandra have Moolavigrahams. In the shrine dedicated to Sri Rama one can see the stone as well as bronze images of Rama, Lakshmana, Sita, Hanuman and small idols of Bharatha and Satrugna.

Thirumangai Azhwar has sung in praise of the Lord here.

Following in his footsteps Sri T.Narasimhachariar composed the “Indalur Erratai Mani Malai”.
    History
The temple dedicated to Lord Parimala Ranganatha at Tiruindalur, Mayiladuturai.

This temple is one of the Pancha Rangams, the others being Srirangapattinam, Srirangam, Adirangam (Koiladi) and Kumbakonam.

The idol which was hitherto believed to be made of brick and mortar for over many centuries was found to be made of a single beautiful green stone of granite measuring 12 feet by 5.5 feet with intricate workmanship in minute detail on the jewels, the kireetam, peethambaram.

One sees even the nails in the hands and feet sharp and in lovely shape.

The Seshasayanam, the five-headed serpant, has been fixed separately, over the head of the deity and it has also been made of stone. Brahma is seen near the wall in a line with the nabhi-naval and at the feet is seen Santhanagopalakrishnan.

The images of Sridevi and Bhoodevi are on either side of the idol on the floor.

    Five Forms of Vishnu.

    Five forms

In Sri Vaishnavism, another school, Vishnu assumes five forms:

    1. In the Para Form, Para is the highest form of Vishnu found only in Sri Vaikunta also called Moksha, along with his consort Lakshmi, (and Bhuma Devi and Nila devi, avatars of Lakshmi) and surrounded by liberated souls like AnantaGaruda, and a host of Muktas (liberated souls).
    2. In the Vyuha form, Vishnu assumes four forms, which exercise different cosmic functions and controls activities of living beings.
    3. In the Vibhava form, Vishnu assumes various manifestations, called Vibhavas, more popularly known as Avataras from time to time, to protect the virtuous, punish evil-doers and re-establish righteousness.
    4. In the Antaryami; “Dwelling within” or “Suksma Vasudeva” form, Vishnu exists within the souls of all living beings and in every substance.[43]
    5. In the Arcavatara or Image manifestation, Vishnu is visible and therefore easily approachable by devotees since Para, Vyuha, Vibhava and Antaryami forms can only be imagined or meditated upon because they are beyond our reach. Such images can be
      1. revealed by Vishnu, for example, a self-manifested (Swayambhu) icon (murti), e.g. The Mahavishnu Temple at Tirunelli, The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam, The Tirumala Venkateswara Temple etc.; or
      2. installed by devas or celestial beings such as such as Guruvayur Temple installed by Vayu; or
      3. installed by humans, and consecrated according to Vaishnava Agama shastras or scriptures such as Lord Jagannath of Jagannath Temple (Puri) at Puri.[44]

In this temple, Lord Sani is found before Ganapathi and Anjaneya(Hanuman).

Legend has it that those who worship Sani will be relieved of their sufferings.

Uthamar Kovil (also known as Thirukkarambanoor) is a Hindu temple in Tiruchirapalli city in Tamil NaduIndia. It is known for the Purushothaman Perumal Temple. It has shrines for the trinity of Hinduism, BrahmaVishnu and Shiva in the same complex, making it a unique temple where shrines for all three gods and their consorts in the same place. There are very few temples where Brahma, the first of the trinity, is worshipped in iconic form, which makes this temple an important place of worship. The temple also contains a shrine for Guru,Saraswati and Navagraha. The worship during Thursdays called “Guruwaar Pooja” is very prominent in the temple.

Vishnu emerged as a Kadambha tree at this place, giving the name “Kathambanur”, which later became “Karambanur”. The name Karambanur is mentioned by Thirumangai Azhwar in Nalayira Divya Prabandam, in which he refers the presiding deity as “Karambanur Uthaman”. The temple is commonly called “Uthamar Kovil” after the name of the presiding deity. The temple is also called Bhikshandar Kovil as the Hindu god Shiva is present in the form of Bhishadanar (a mendicant) and believed to have attained cure by worshiping Vishnu at this place.[1]

As per Hindu legend, once Vishnu wanted to test the devotion of Brahma. He raised as a Kadhamba tree in the place and Brahma, knowing this, started his worship practise with Thirumanjanam (ablution). The water from the ablution filled a tank nearby, which came to be known as “Kathamba Theertham”. Vishnu was satisfied with the devotion of Brahma and gave a boon to Brahma to have a shrine in this place. Shiva wanted to get rid off the sin holding the cut head of Brahma and went on a sacred trip. While coming to this place, Vishnu requested his consort Lakshmi to give alms to Shiva. Shiva’s grail was filled by the alms and Lakshmi came to be known as “Poornavalli” (the one who filled the grail).[1]

The worship is held amidst religious instructions in the Vedas (sacred texts) read by priests and prostration by worshippers in front of the temple mast. There are weekly rituals like somavaram (Monday) and sukravaram(Friday), fortnightly rituals like pradosham and monthly festivals like amavasai (new moon day), kiruthigaipournami (full moon day) and sathurthi for Bikshadanar. The major festival of the temple, the Brahmotsavam, is celebrated during the Tamil month of Kartigai (November – December) when festival images of both Purushotamand and Bikshadanar are carried together in the streets surrounding the temple. • Temple Where The Priest Becomes Siva’s Wife Thiruvanaikaval

I have been posting on Temples ,India, on the bond that exists between Man and God.

Here is a Temple where the Temple Priest , Daily, at the stroke of Noon ,  dresses up like the wife of Lord Siva, Akilandeswari, and performs the Middy Pooja(Ucchi Kala Pooja).

    Facts about Thiruvanaikaval.

    Thiruvanaikaval temple

Thiruvanaikaval (Tamil: திருவானைக்காவல்) (also ThiruvanaikalJambekeswaram) is a famous Shiva temple in Tiruchirapalli (Trichy), in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The temple was built by Kocengannan (Kochenga Chola), one of the Early Cholas, around 1,800 years ago. It is located in the Srirangam island, which has the famous Ranganathaswamy temple.

Thiruvanaikal is one of the five major Shiva Temples of Tamil Nadu (Panchabhoota Sthalams) representing the Mahābhūta or five great elements; this temple represents the element of water, or neer in Tamil.[1] The sanctum of Jambukeswara has an underground water stream and in spite of pumping water out, it is always filled with water.[2]

It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, where all of the four most revered Nayanars (Saivite Saints) have sung glories of the deity in this temple. The temple has inscriptions from the Chola period.

There were two Siva Ganas (Siva’s disciples who live in Kailash): ‘Malyavan’ and ‘Pushpadanta’. Though they are Shiva Ganas they always quarrel with each other and fight for one thing or other. In one fight ‘Malyavan’ cursed ‘Pushpadanta’ to become an elephant on earth and the latter cursed the former to become a spider on earth. The elephant and the spider came to Jambukeswaram and continued their Shiva worship. The elephant collected water from river Cauvery and conducted ablution to the lingam under the Jambu tree (Eugenia jambolana) daily. The spider constructed his web over the lingam to prevent dry leaves from dropping on it and prevent sunlight directly falling on it. When the elephant saw the web and thought it was dust on lingam. The elephant tore them and cleaned the lingam by pouring water and the practice continued daily. The spider became angry one day and crawled into the trunk of the elephant and bit the elephant to death, killing itself. Siva, in the form of Jambukeswara, moved by the deep devotion of the two, relieved them from the curse. As an elephant worshipped Shiva here, this place came to be known as Thiru Aanai Kaa (thiru means holy, aanai is elephant, kaa (kaadu) means forest).[2] Later the name ‘Thiruaanaikaa’ become ‘Thiruvanaikaval’ and ‘Thiruvanaikoil’.

In the next birth, the spider was born as the King Kochengot Chola (kotchengannan cholan meaning red-eyed king) and built 70 temples and this temple is the one among them.[2] Remembering his enmity with the elephant in his previous birth, he built the Shiva Sannathi (sanctorum) such that not even a small elephant can enter. The entrance on the sanctorum of Jambukeswara is only 4 foot high and 2.5 foot wide.[2]

    Legend behind king’s red eyes

There was a story behind the king’s red eyes – When he was in his mother’s womb the palace astrologer predicted a sacred time to give birth to enable the newborn’s well being. The queen went into labor early, before the time predicted by the astrologer. The queen hence told the servant to hang her upside down for the time to come so that she could have a wise and virtuous son who could head the kingdom righteously. This waiting time inside the womb made the baby’s eyes red. After becoming the king, he build the temple for Siva and Goddess Akilandeswari in the name of Aanaikka (elephant protected) later days it changed to Thiruvanaikovil.

    Incredible!

One sugar company has given a whole new meaning to midnight feasts by creating the world’s first edible hotel.

The first sweet-filled pop-up hotel opened its doors last night and two lucky residents munched their way through vanilla sponge cushions, windows and walls clad with 2,000 macaroons, a rug made from 1,081 meringues and 20 kilos of marshmallows.

The Soho-based guest house took a team of 14 cake makers more than 2,000 hours to bake and 900 hours to decorate, and was created using more than 600 kilos of sugar.

For one night only sweet-toothed guests chomped their way through windowsills built entirely from fudge and bathed in a bath filled with caramel-coated popcorn; there were even edible books on the bedside table.

With thousands of baked treats for the guests to nibble on and over 100 pieces of edible art on show across three floors and eight rooms, there’s no way the guests left the hotel feeling hungry.

The hotel was the brainchild of Tate & Lyle Sugars and was inspired by regions from around the world based on the brands eight new Fairtrade sugars.

Curated by ‘Miss Cakehead’ with the help of 14 cake artists including The Meringue Girls and Cake For Breakfast, each room was themed by a different sugar.
