Surya, the Sun God  is one of the most revered in Hinduism.

    Lord Surya.Image.
    Lord Surya.

So much so that Adi Shankaracharya classified the worship of Surya as Sauram along with Ganapathyam,Kaumaram,Shaivam,Saaktham and Vaishnavam.

The foremost duty of a Hindu is the performance of Sanshyavandana.

The God addressed to and the Argya, the offering of water is to Surya.

He is described as the Visible Reality,Brahman.

    ‘Namas Savitre, Jadadeka Chakshushe,

    Jagat Prasoothi Sthithi Naasa Hetave,

    Thrayee Mayaya Thrigunathma Dharine,

    Virinchi Narayana Sankarathmane’

Lord Krishna says He is Vishnu among the Adhityas.

    ‘Adhityanaa Aham Vishnu’

Surya is the axis on which the Universe rests and moves.

Surya’s Sisumara Chakra explains the Universe and the movement of Sun and Galaxies

    Surya Siddhanta explains this.

Surya assumes different names  for different months.

47-48. While the sages glorify the sun-god with the hymns of the Sama-, Rig- and Yajur Vedas, which reveal his identity, the Gandharvas also sing his praises and the Apsaras dance before his chariot. The Nagas arrange the chariot ropes and the Yaksas harness the horses to the chariot, while the powerful Raksasas push from behind.

    49. Facing the chariot, the sixty thousand brahmana sages known as Valakhilyas travel in front and offer prayers to the almighty sun-god with Vedic mantras.

    46. Thus, throughout the twelve months, the lord of the sun travels in all directions with his six types of associates, disseminating among the inhabitants of this universe purity of consciousness for both this life and the next.

    45. All these personalities are the opulent expansions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vishnu, in the form of the sun-god. These deities take away all the sinful reactions of those who remember them each day at dawn and sunset. -Bhagavatha Purana.

    The Twelve Suns.

Higher Astronomy Instruments Designs Surya Siddhanta

Many are under the impression that Hinduism, especially the Vedas are theoretical and do not address to the problems of daily Life or Science.

Nothing can be farther from the Truth.

    Surya Siddhanta.jpg
    Surya Siddhanta.

I had posted articles on practical application of Science,Dealing with daily life, Botany,Zoology, Food and other vital subjects that deal with our daily needs, developed by Hinduism.

Here I am furnishing details from the Surya Siddhanta that deals with Astronomy in detail.

I had earlier posted an article on Vishnu’s Navel Galaxy and how it has been validated by modern Astronomy.

The Surya Siddhanta is one of the oldest treatises (siddhanta) in Hindu astronomy. The extant text as edited by Burgess (1860) is medieval (c. 12th century), but it is clearly based on older versions, which may go back to before the Common Era[citation needed].

It has rules laid down to determine the true motions of the luminaries, which conform to their actual positions in the sky. It gives the locations of several stars other than the lunar nakshatras and treats the calculation of solar eclipses. as well as solstices eg.summer solstice 21/06 Significant coverage is on kinds of time, length of the year of gods and demons, day and night of god Brahma, the elapsed period since creation, how planets move eastwards and sidereal revolution. The lengths of the Earth’s diameter, circumference are also given. Eclipses and color of the eclipsed portion of the moon is mentioned.”

Table of contents in Surya Siddhanta.

    1. The Mean Motions of the Planets
    2. True Places of the Planets
    3. Direction, Place and Time
    4. The Moon and Eclipses
    5. The Sun and Eclipses
    6. The Projection of Eclipses
    7. Planetary Conjunctions
    8. Of the Stars

  • Rare Powerful Saneswara Vajra Panjarika Stotram

There are some Deities in Hinduism who are called with the epithet  Iswara.

    Lord Shiva as Parameswara.

    Another is Sani, Saturn.

The pronunciation for Saturn in Sanskrit  is Sanaiscara, one who moves slowly. as Saturn takes 30 years to orbit around the Sun.

Special status is bestowed on Sanesswara.

He grants boons after he tests you.

    No real harm befalls one.

There is a special prayer for Saneswara, Sanai Vajra Pancharika Stortram.

This helps in reducing the mental tensions that occur when Saneswara is not favorable  in your Horoscope.

    Sani Vajra Pancharika Stotram

    Neelambaro, Nelavapu, kireeti,

    Grdhra sthitha, sthrasakaro , dhanushman,

    Chathurbhuja, suryasutha, prasanna,

    Sada mama syadwaradha prasantha.                                                         1

Oh god dressed in blue silk, who has a blue body,

Who wears a crown, who sits on vulture,

Who gives misfortunes, who is armed with a bow,

Who has four hands and who is son of Sun God,

Be pleased with me always and happily grant me boons.

    Brahmo Uvacha:-

    Brahma told:-

Srunu dwam rishaya , Sarva sani peeda haram mahath,

    Kavacham Sani Rajasya Soureridhamanuthamam.                                     2

Be pleased to hear oh sage, the great armour,

Which is a cure to all misery brought by king  Sani,

Who is the incomparably great in the clan of  the Sun.

Kavacham devatha vasam vajra panjara samgnakam,

SAnaishara preethikaram, sarva soubhagya dhayagam.                                3

This armour  called  “thunderbolt shield” in which gods live ,

Is very dear to the slow moving planet, and brings all luck.

Om Sri Sanaischara, pathu bhalam  may Soorya nandana,

Nethre Chayathmaja pathu, pathu karnou Yamanuja.                                     4

Om , Oh God Saturn, let the son of Sun protect my forehead,

Let the darling son of Chaya protect my eyes,

Lat my ears be protected by the brother of Yama.

Nasam Vaivaswaswatha Pathu, mukham may Bhaskara sada,

Snigha kandashasch may kandaam , bhujou pathu Mahabhuja.                      5

Let my nose be protected by Sun God,

Let the illuminator always protect my face,

Let he with a pleasant voice protect my voice ,

And let the great armed God protect my arms.

Skandhou pathu sanischaiva, karou pathu shubha pradha,

Vaksha pathu Yama bhratha, kukshim paathvasitha sthadha.                         6

Let my shoulders be protected by Sani,

Let my hands be protected by he who does good,

Let the brother of Yama protect my chest,

And the one who is dark in colour protect my navel.

Nabhim grahpathi pathu, manda pathu kateem thadha,

OOru mamanthaka pathu , yamo januyugam thadha.                                      7

Let my stomach be protected by the lord of all planets,

Let the slow mover protect my hips,

Let he who makes end protect my thighs,

And let Yama protect my  pair of knees.

Padou Manda gathi pathu, sarvangam pathu pippala,

Angopangani sarvani rakshen may Surya nandana.                                         8

Let my legs be protected by him with slow speed,

Let all my organs be protected by he who wears the coat,

And all my  primary and secondary organs ,

Be protected by the darling sin of the Sun God.

Ithyethath kavacham divyam padeth soorya suthasya ya,

Na thaasya jayathe peeda , preetho bhavathi sooryaja.                                     9

If this armour of  the son of the Sun God is read,

No misery will come to him and,

The son of Sun God would be pleased with him.

Vyayay janma dwitheeyastho, mruthyu sthana gatrhopi va,

Kalathrastho gatho vapi supreethasthu sada sani.                                            10

Whether Saturn occupies the twelfth , first or second house,

Or even goes to the house of death  or occupies the seventh star,

Saturn will always be pleased with him.

Ashtamastha soorya suthe vyaye, janma dwitheeyage,

Kavacham padathe nithyam, na peeda jayathe kwachith.                                 11

If the son of Sun God is in eighth, twelfth, first or second house,

Daily reading this Kavacham , no misery would ever be caused.

Ithyedath kavacham divyam saureya nirmitham pura,

    Dwadasahtama janmastha doshan nasayathe sada.,

Janma lagna sthithaan doshan sarvan nasayathe Prabhu.                                   12

This  holy divine armour composed by Sun in ancient times,

Would destroy the ills caused by eighth ,twelfth, first and second house,

And also destroy the bad effects of Saturn occupying the Lagna rasi(Ascendent)

Ithi Sri Brahmanda Purane Brahma Narada Samvade,

    Sani Vajra panjara kavacham sampoornam,

Thus ends the thunderbolt armour of Saturn,

Occuring in the discussion between Brahma and sage Narada,

    In Brahmanda Puranam

    Translation by P.R.Ramchander.

Chanting of this in multiples of 9. 9,18,36, 108 will be beneficial.

  • Narayana Mantra by Asvinikumaras For Fortune Health

Asvini Devas, twins, are the sons of Sangya, Goddess of Clouds, daughter of Viswakarma,The Divine Architect and Surya, the Sun God, in His Avatar as Vivasvat.

Another version says it is Chaya,Shadow, is their mother, father is Surya.

    Asvini Kumaras
    Asvinikumars.Image Credit.http://www.ztopics.com/Ashwini%20Kumaras/

That Sangya seems to be correct.

Asvini Devas are Divine healers and Gods of Ayurvedic Medicine.

Nakula ans Saha Deva of Mahabharata were born of Pandu’s wife Matri and Asvini Devas.

“They are also called Nasatya (dual nāsatyau “kind, helpful”) in the Rigveda; later, Nasatya is the name of one twin, while the other is called Dasra (“enlightened giving”). By popular etymology, the name nāsatya is often incorrectly analysed as na+asatya “not untrue”=”true”.

    Asvini kumaras Varaha Purana Version.

‘Sage Mahatapa explained to Prajapal how Aswini Kumars were born. Marichi was Brahma’s son and Kashyap was the son of Marichi. Kashyap and Aditi begot Twelve ‘Adityas’ (Suns). [According to Vishnupurana the Adityas were Amsa, Aryaman, Bhaga, Dhuti, Mitra, Pusan, Sakra, Savitur, Twastha, Varuna, Vishnu/Vamana, Vaivaswat; Martand too was known as one of these, but Aditi appeared to have disowned him?] Martand wedded Viswakarma’s daughter Sangya and begot two children-Yama and Yami. Sangya was unable to bear the extreme heat of Martand, thus created her shadow counterpart with instructions to serve her husband in all ways and left for a place known as Uttarkuru. Eventually Martand came to know the truth, discovered her in the form of a mare, married her and gave birth to two Aswini Kumars! Martand instructed the sons to dedicate themselves in the worship of Narayana and after severe ‘Tapasya’by incessantly uttering ‘Narayana Mantra’ which was taught by Martand, Prajapati Narayan was finally pleased to appear Himself before them. When King Prajapal desired to learn the Mantra from the Sage Mahatapa, the latter obliged and recited it.
