  • Thanksgiving Rishi Panchami

India is land of Rishis, Seers who were not only the people with a deep bent of spirituality but also social reformers and Law givers.

There are seven great Rishis though there are many more,

These are called Saptha Rishis (Seven Rishis).

These seven for the present Kali Yuga are,

    Atri, Bhrigu,Kuthsa,Vasihsta,Gauthama,Kasyapa and Angirasa.

They are represented in the Great bear Constellation.

Please read my post Rishis a Timeline.

They have given great mantras for the society and set standards of behavior , selfless in their discharging their duties with a fair sense of Justice.

To commemorate their memory Rishi Panchami is celebrated.

    Rishi Panchami.jpg.
    Rishi Panhami Celebration.

This falls on the next day after Ganesh Chaturthi every year on Panchami.

This day is devoted vrata , Vow.

Women visit river or any water storage in the afternoon, take cow dung with them, clean their teeth with medicinal herbal stick, take cold-water bath.

They arrange the idol of Saptarshi on small wooden platform in the form of seven betenuts and perform pooja.

On this day they should eat only those fruits, which grow below the earth (soil) and strictly avoid eating any eatables, which are prepared from the grains grown from the toiling of bullocks.

‘Aghada’ is one such plant, which has many medicinal uses.

This is grown in Ashadha and Shravana months.

In Bhadrapada it becomes full-fledged and its medicinal instincts are prominently noticed in the same month.

The Jains regard this a very important day.

Among them, the followers of Shwetambar cult end their Parjushan Maha Parva on this day and the others following Digambar cult, start their Maha Parva from this day.

‘Rhushabhadeva’ was the first and the most sacred Teerthankar as per the Jains.

He is known as Aadinath also. ‘Rishi Panchami’ day is observed in the name of this Aadinath. The motive of such observance between the Hindus and the Jains is the same.

  • Who Is Mystic Avadhuta, Types

Unlike other Faiths, Hinduism does not bring all those who realized Godhead or self-realization under one name, Mystic.

There are Siddhas, Rishis of Different kinds,Munis,Guru,Yogins, Savikalpa and Nirvakalpa,Saints, Sages.

Though there is this common factor of having realized God/Self, there is a minute difference among them.

Please read m posts on Rishis, different kinds.

Siddhas are realized souls, do not die and live eternally.

Yogis reach the State of samadhi.

    This is of two kinds.

Savikalpa where the realized soul is seemingly active here.

    In Nirvakalpa everything is renounced.

    We have yet another classification.

    Avadhuta.

    An Avadhuta.jpg.
    An Avadhuta.

Avadhoota (अवधूत avadhūta) is a Sanskrit term from some Indian religions referring to a type of mystic or saint who is beyond egoic-consciousness, duality and common worldly concerns and acts without consideration for standard social etiquette.

Also spelled as Avdhoot, such personalities “roam free like a child upon the face of the Earth”.

An Avadhoota does not identify with their mind or body or ‘names and forms’ (Sanskrit: namarupa).

Such a person is held to be pure ‘consciousness’ (Sanskrit: caitanya) in human form.

Avadhoota play a significant role in the history, origins and rejuvenations of a number of Dharmic Traditions such

as YogaVedantaBuddhadharma and Bhakti ‘lineage’ (Sanskrit:parampara) even as they are released from standard observances.

Avadhuts are the voice of the avadhuti the channel that resolves the dichotomy of the ‘left hand path’(Sanskrit: Vamamarga; “Vamachara”) and ‘right

hand path (Sanskrit: Dakshinamarga) traditions and left and right channels (otherwise known as the outer channels) of the energetic body, though an

Avadhut may or may not continue such dichotomous rites of the āstika or nāstika Darśana for they are free from sectarian ritual observance and

    affiliation.

Feuerstein (1991: p. 105) frames how the term ‘Avadhoota’ came to be associated with the mad or eccentric holiness or ‘crazy wisdom‘ of some antinomian paramahamsa who were often ‘skyclad’ or ‘naked’ (Sanskrit: digambara):

“The appellation “Avadhoota,” more than any other, came to be associated with the apparently crazy modes of behaviour of some paramahamsas, who dramatize the reversal of social norms, a behaviour characteristic of their spontaneous lifestyle. Their frequent nakedness is perhaps the most symbolic expression of this reversal.”

    Sacrifice.

Chandra et al.. (1902: p. 20) equates the ‘chodpa‘ (Tibetanགཅོད་པWyliechod pa) as a type of Avadhoota:

“ཀུ་སུ་ལུ་པ ku-su-lu-pa is a word of Tantrik mysticism, its proper Tibetan equivalent being གཅོད་པ, the art of exorcism. The mystic Tantrik rites of the Avadhauts, called Avadhūtipa in Tibet, exist in India.”

The rites of chod differ between lineages but essentially there is an offering of their body as food, a blessing to demons and other entities to whom this kind of offering may be of benefit. This leitmotif and sadhana is common to another denizen of the charnel groundDattatreya the Avadhoota, to whom has been attributed the esteemed nondual medieval song, the Avadhoota Gita. Dattatreya was a founding adi guru of the Aghor tradition according to Barrett (2008: p. 33):

“…Lord Dattatreya, an antinomian form of Shiva closely associated with the cremation ground, who appeared to Baba Kina Ram atop Girnar Mountain in Gujarat. Considered to be the adi guru (ancient spiritual teacher) and founding deity of Aghor, Lord Dattatreya offered his own flesh to the young ascetic as prasād (a kind of blessing), conferring upon him the power of clairvoyance and establishing a guru-disciple relationship between them.”

    Mahānirvāṇatantraṃ

Woodroffe, in his translation of the Mahānirvāṇatantraṃ from the original Sanskrit into English under his nom-de-plume of Arthur Avalon, may be the opening discourse of the archetype of “Avadhoota” to the English reading public, as none of the Avadhoota upanishads were translated amongst the collections of minor upanishads such as the Thirty Minor Upanishads (Aiyar: 1914).The pen-name is play on the magical realm of Avalon and the young later-to-be, King Arthur, within the story-cycle of tales known generally as King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table; specifically according to Taylor (2001: p. 148), Woodroffe chose the name from the noted incomplete magnum opus, the painting ‘Arthur’s Sleep in Avalon‘ by Burne-Jones.[9] Moreover, Taylor (2001: p. 148) conveys the salience of this magical literary identity and contextualizes by making reference towestern esotericismHoly grailquestoccult secretsinitiations and the Theosophists:

“This is quite important to know, for here we have a writer on an Indian esoteric system taking a name imbued with western esotericism. The name at any rate seems to hint at initiations and the possession of occult secrets. The Arthurian legends are bound up with the story of the Holy Grail and its quest. This was a symbol of esoteric wisdom, especially to Theosophists who appropriated the legend. Anyone who named himself after King Arthur or the mystic isle of Avalon would be thought to be identifying himself with occultism, in Theosophists’ eyes.

    How to identify an Avadhuta,

The book of Brahmanirvantantra describes how to identify the avadhuts of the following types:

    1. BramhAvadhoota : An avadhut from birth, who appears in any class of society. Completely indifferent to the world or worldly matters.
    2. ShaivAvadhoota : Avadhuts who have taken to the renounced order of life (sannyas), often with unkempt long hair (jata), or who dress in the manner of Shaivites and spend almost all of their time in trance (samādhi), or meditation.
    3. VirAvadhoota : This person looks like a sadhu who has put red colored sandal paste on his body and wears saffron clothes. His hair are very well grown and are normally furling in the wind. They wear in their neck a Rudraksha mala or a string with bones. They hold a wooden stick (danda) in their hand and additionally they always have an axe (parashu) or a damaru (small drum) with them.
    4. KulAvadhoota : These people are supposed to have taken initiation from the Kaula sampradaya. It is very difficult to recognize these people as they do not wear any signs outside which can identify them from others. The speciality of these people is that they remain and live like usual people do. They can show themselves in the form of Kings or a family man.

The avadhoota represents the pinnacle of spiritual evolution; none is superior to him. Avadhoota means “one who is immortal” (akshara), and who has totally discarded worldly ties. He is verily Brahman himself. He realizes himself to be pure intelligence. He is unmindful of the six infirmities of human birth, namely: sorrow, delusion, old age, death, hunger and thirst. He has shaken off all bondage of the experimental world, and moves about freely like a child, a madman or one possessed by spirits.

He may be with or without clothes. He does not wear any distinct emblem of any order. He has no desire to sleep, beg or bathe. He views his body as a corpse and subsists on food which comes to him from all classes. He does not interpret the shastras or the Vedas. For him nothing is righteous or unrighteous, holy or unholy.

He is free of karma. The karmas of this life and past lives are all burnt away, and due to the absence of kartritva (doership) and bhoktritva (desire for enjoyment), no future karmas are created. Only the prarabdha (unalterable) karmas which have already begun to operate will affect his body, helping to sustain it, but his mind will remain unaffected. He will live in this world until the prarabdha karmas are worked out, after which his body will fall off. Then he is said to attain videhamukti (state beyond body consciousness).

Such a liberated soul never returns to the embodied state. He is not born again; he is immortal. He has achieved the final aim of taking birth in this world.”

Bhad-avadhuta Upanisad, thus: “The Avadhuta is so called because he is immortal ; he is the greatest ; he has discarded worldly ties ; and he is indicated in the meaning of the sentence “Thou art That,”

  • Rishis Definition Seven Types Details

    Rishis Definition Seven Types Details

There are many terms that describe Men of Wisdom,Spiritual Teachers,Sages, Saints in Hinduism.

Many of these terms are used without understanding the connotation of these terms.

Munis,Rishis, Raja Rishis,Yogins are some these terms.

Let us see what the Scriptures say about these terms.

We shall see about the term Rishi.

This term is usually translated as ‘Seer’, who has seen.

This comes close to the meaning, but Rishi is more than seeing.

“Rishi Darsanaath’-Yakasha in his Niruktam 2.11

One who has seen Mantras (Mantra Drishtaa)
Rishi is one who can see with superior vision what others cannot.

Mantras, the mystically locked sounds are those that express an aspect of Reality.

Some Mantras the Reality itself, Gayatri Mantra.

These Mantras were grasped from the Ether by some people, who follow spiritual discipline.

    These were grasped intuitively, ‘Seen’

‘Rishati jnaanEna samsaarapaaram’ -Paninini in Vachaspatikosam.

‘one who crosses and reaches the other shore of the Sea of Samsara’

The purpose of Life, according to Hinduism , is to transcend the cycle of Births and Deaths, Samsara.

The Mantras help one to cross the endless Cycle of Births and Deaths.

Rig Veda 1.31.16 and 9.96.18 describe  Rishi as ‘one who lights the flame of knowledge, one who stimulates thinking.’

This is a corollary to the definition we have seen already.

The Rishis  are associated with the  element of fire (Agni).

Krishna Yajur Veda, 2nd Khaanda 5th Prasna, 8th Anuvaka calls a Rishi ‘Saamitheni, one who can kindle fire properly for performing Homa.

    Different Types of Rishis

    Rishi is a general term.

    Definition of Rishi.

According to Indian tradition, the word may be derived from two different meanings of the root ‘rsh’ (ṛṣ). Sanskrit grammarians derive this word from the second meaning: “to go, to move”.V. S. Aptegives this particular meaning and derivation, and Monier-Williams also gives the same, with some qualification.

Another form of this root means “to flow, to move near by flowing”. (All the meanings and derivations cited above are based upon Sanskrit English Dictionary of Monier-Williams). Monier-Williams also quotes Tārānātha who compiled the great (Sanskrit-to-Sanskrit) dictionary named “ṛṣati jñānena saṃsāra-pāram” (i.e., “one who reaches beyond this mundane world by means of spiritual knowledge”).

More than a century ago, Monier-Williams tentatively suggested a derivation from drś “to see”. Monier-Williams also quotes the Hibernian (Irish) form arsan (a sage, a man old in wisdom) and arrach (old, ancient, aged) as related to rishi. Monier-Williams also conjectures that the root drish (to see) might have given rise to an obsolete root rish meaning “to see”.

Following is the classification of Rishis.

    Vipra Rishis,

    Brahma Rishis,

    Deva Rishis,

    Daanava Rishis and

    Raja Rishis.

Those who were priests by virtue of their birth as Brahmins  are Vipra Rishis? , Uthanga.

Those who had realized Brahman?, The Reality through intense Tapas are Brahma Rishis, Vasishta, Atri, Viswamitra, Aaangirasa.

Sage Naarada is known as Deva Rishi belonging to the Devas.

Sukrachariar is Daanava Rishi due to his alignment with Asuras.

Amarakosa classifies Seven types of Rishia.Shrutarshi, Kāndarshi, Paramarshi, Maharshi, Rājarshi, Brahmarshi and Devarshi.

Though generally Rishis were Brahmins, there were a number of Kshatriyas or rulers who also achieved the status of Rishi by their Tapas.

And, they were known as Taja Rishis,  Sage Viswamitra, Ambareesha, Trasadayu, Sibi Chakravarthi and Maandaata were in this category.

King Janaka was a Raja Rishi.

From which Caste, Community do they come from?

Rishis are drawn from all the four Ashramams viz., Brahmacharya, Grihasta, Vaanaprasta and Sannyaasa

  • Meaning Of ‘Namaha’ Hinduism

All of us know Namaha नमः)” is used in Mantras and Slokas.

People try to translate this into a Single word and the results are disappointing if one understands the import of the word Namah a(नमः)”

    Shiva Image.jpg.
    Lord Shiva

Mantras are the Sound energies captured by the Rishis from Ether and as such they are not meant to be translated for Sound can not be translated.

How does one translate Laughter or the cry of a Child?

Misplaced enthusiasm results in bizarre translations.

In Tamil, Namaha नमः)” is translated as ‘Potri’   போற்றி.

Translated into English , this means ‘I Praise!”

Translation of Tamil Mantras like Tiruppukazh will result in the same absurdity.

Mahamantras are to be used and chanted in the Language in which they have been presented by ancient Seers.

They are not words but mystically locked Sounds by the Devata, Adhi Devatha and the Rishi of the Mantra.

To prevent elements from disturbing the concentration one performs Anganyaasa, Karanyaasa and Dikh Bandhana.

Now what does the word Namaha  mean?

It means ‘It is not Mine’

If you observe in any Puja or Homa ,after you perform Ahuti, you say ‘Ithanna mama’-this is not mine.

    The whole Universe is His.

Whatever we do is His and because of Him.

So in the real sense we do not have anything.

So, after oblations, we declare what ever we have done is “Not Mine’

Compare ‘Kayena Vaca Manasendrirarva Buddyaathmanaath Prakruthe swapaath’-

Whatever I have performed, by senses and intellect are not by Me but being forced to do so by Prakriti’

Therefore I relinquish all these actions and the results thereof to the One Beyond, Sriman Narayana.

    This is attitude even worshiping.

There is an interesting explanation on these lines of Adi Shankaracharya’s Soundaryalahari Palasrthi sloka.

I shall post on this later.

    नमः

More authentic and spiritual explanation is found in Taittriya Upanishad.

    ‘Tham Nama Ithi Upaaseetha

    Namyanthesmai Kaamaa:

When one worships saying and feeling that it is not Mine, the Objects of Desires throng to him and  be ready to do his bidding.

    नमः

is the height of Karma, Gnana and Bhakti  Yoga.

  • Veda Mantras For Devatas For Prosperity

I am furnishing Veda Mantras for Prosperity, Resolving problems.

I have posted some articles on this subject which includes the Bheeeja Mantras.

A word of Caution and a Warning.

    Indian Philosophy Details
    Hindu Scriptures Image credit. http://www.thebritishtoastrack.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/vedas.jpg

These mantras are very potent and have to be practiced after getting initiated a Guru.

These are not to be trifled with for these are not mere words, they are Sounds grasped by the Rishis by Intuition..

Wrong pronunciation, practicing without initiation from a Guru, in extreme case may even be fatal.

Wrong pronunciation might cause unpleasant effects.

Get a competent Guru and be initiated.

If your desire is strong enough the Guru shall find you.

You may chant Guru Brahma sloka to get a competent Guru or pray Lord Subrahmanya, you shall get your Guru.

A True Guru does not advertise, not easy to identify, nor does he accept money.

He is bound to test you before initiation.

With so many constraints why do I post these?

    There are three reasons.

I am shocked to find that many great Religions, eg. African Religion, have been  wiped off, the people themselves not sure of their roots, by a systematic effort to erase these treasures.

Despite all this our Scriptures have survived, thanks to the Oral Traditions and the unstinting devotion of selfless Brahmins, who, despite their poor economic conditions, have preserved these Jewels.

My effort is to make these Public so that some people may be benefited, and more importantly these shall be saved and preserved for posterity.

I find the present generation to be curious and follow things if explained patiently in a language they understand, that is Science.

Through my post, with my limited Knowledge and resources, I am trying to communicate to the curious younger generation and hope they shall carry our traditions into the future.

Another important factor is that these treasures are not a figment of imagination of fertile minds but a revelation arrived at after assiduous practice

    and

they stand the test of Modern Science of to-day and transcends it.
