  • Hinduism Is Mathematics Fibonacci Golden Ratio In Meru

Philosophical enquiry needs an  analytic  Mathematical Mind.

One would notice that most of the Great Philosophers of the world have also been great Mathematicians.

Rene Descartes, Leibniz,Spinoza,Siddhas of India,Pingala, Arya Bhatta, Varaha Mihira….

It is easy for a Mathematician to understand Nature which is mathematically constructed.

Every atom to an elephant is made mathematically.

There is Uniformity and Rhythm in Nature.

This applies to actions and reactions.

The term Rta is dealt separately in Hinduism.

    This means order.

Please read my post on this.

Another point in Hinduism is what is in Macrocosm is in Microcosm and vice versa.

What is found in the Universe is found in Man.

    For example,

The ratio 1:1.618 is a golden ratio which is found all over the cosmos. Stick out your forefinger. The ratio from the first two bones is 1:1.618. Now the ratio between the 2nd middle bone and the third bone terminating at the knuckle is also 1:1.618.  The ration from your navel to top of your head and bottom of your feet is also 1:1.618

This is called the Fibonacci Ratio.

    Fibonacci Ratio in Leaves

    Arrangements of the leaves

    Fibonacci Ration in Leaves.

Also, many plants show the Fibonacci numbers in the arrangements of the leaves around their stems. If we look down on a plant, the leaves are often arranged so that leaves above do not hide leaves below. This means that each gets a good share of the sunlight and catches the most rain to channel down to the roots as it runs down the leaf to the stem.
The computer generated ray-traced picture here is created by my brother, Brian.

    Leaves per turn

The Fibonacci numbers occur when counting both the number of times we go around the stem, going from leaf to leaf, as well as counting the leaves we meet until we encounter a leaf directly above the starting one.

If we count in the other direction, we get a different number of turns for the same number of leaves.

The number of turns in each direction and the number of leaves met are three consecutive Fibonacci numbers!

    Fibonacci Number in Mount Meru

Mount Meru is an actual and sacred mountain in Tanzania/Arctic, it is also the name given to the Fibonacci series in the Maatraameru (Mountain of Cadence) written by Pingala in the Chhandah-shastra (Art of Prosody) around 450 BC. In this writing, it was organized as a pyramid, today known as Pascal’s triangle, like this:

    Mount Meru In Numbers.photot.jpg
    Mount Meru In Numbers

Kubera was revered as the chief of the Guhyakas and was the ‘king of kings’, the ‘god’ and ‘guardian of the North’. The word Guhyakas comes from the word ‘godha’ (root gudh or guh), meaning chameleon – a dragon-serpent. It seems that in Hindu mythology, ‘god’ is a ‘naga’ or ‘dragon serpent’ who lives at the top of Mount Meru and hides a golden treasure.

Thus we find that God is associated in ancient Hindu mythology with the infinite and irrational golden ratio at the center of a Fibonacci spiral symbolized as a mountain, pyramid or perhaps an infinite spiraling vortex (like the Hindu Schwass-tika). Further reading on the subject describes Mt. Meru as home to all of the gods, closely resembling the Biblical concept of a heaven paved with gold.

As one last note, in Vedic astrology, Kubera’s golden treasure is guarded by Shukra, which is the Hindu name for the planet Venus. Shukra is then celebrated in a specific month in the Hindu calendar called JyeshTha, corresponding to May-June.

One would find he same in Carnatic Music and Bharata Natya.

    More to follow.

  • Vishnu Ananthasayanam Cosmic Hibernation

Rene Descartes ,the Rationalist Philosopher’s observation on Sleep and Wakefulness is interesting.

He developed the system of doubt to arrive at certainty.

    Ranganatha Srirangam.jpg
    Narayana In Anantha sayanam,Sriranagam

He starts disbelieving everything, the senses, the external world, scriptures, opinions and everything one can conceive of.

I recommend reading his Books for explaining his thoughts, though interesting, will not come under the topic we are discussing.

    One sleeps and wakes up.

    Padmanabha in ananthasayanam.jpg
    Padmanabha in ananthasayanam,Thiruvanathapuram temple

Descartes asks as to what determines the state of sleep and wakefulness.

In sleep one dreams and on waking up finds that it is not true.

What if what one perceives to be Sleep is wakefulness and what wakefulness is really a sleeping state?

In sleep we find everything to be true at the time of dreaming and only on waking up we say we have dreamt.

What if this is the other way round?

Sometimes I dream that I write and on waking up I find it is untrue and that I have been dreaming.

Now I am writing this post.

How can I be certain now that this activity is not being done while asleep?

This action of writing now may be a dream and I may wake up.

This is a problem not solved by Philosophy.

Hinduism describes four states of Being.

    Jagrat, the waking state.

    Swapna, the dreaming state,

Sushupti, the deep dreamless state and

    Turiya, Pure Consciousness.

In the last state everything is Pure consciousness and the dreamer or The Experiencer, one who experiences and The Experienced are One.

    One becomes the other.

And Consciousness is not limited by Space and Time.

Only when Space and Time are present, is the Consciousness becomes limited.

The Universal Consciousness one of the Attributes of Reality in unbounded.

Only when it is bound by Space and time, does it manifest as the world of names and Forms.

In essence the world and the beings, both animate and inanimate are One.

The differentiation occurs because of Space and Time.

This is called by Henri Bergson as Elan Vital.

Our Indian Philosophers call it Chit, one of the attributes of Brahman,Reality, the others being Sat(Being) and Ananda(Bliss)

Purusha Sukta describes the evolution of the Cosmos.

It describes the Universe in its evolution.

It talks about movement and stillness.

Motion and immobility are two things that are relative to each other.

Purusha is the Universal primordial Principle while Narayana is the specific applied principle in action.

    He evolves into the world.

    NaarayanamMahaegyam viswaathmaanam Prayaanam..

    Naarayna paro Jyotiraathma naarayana para’

He is the mover but He is Immobile.

He evolves into the Universe , remains Himself.

He evolves Consciousness into beings, making them aware, not what they are but what Narayana wants them to be, by His Maya, Illusion.

In this sense he makes things ,people though Conscious yet not Really Conscious.

He poses to be asleep, but not really sleeping.

    Narayana does not sleep.

His sleep is Yoga Nidra, a state of Yoga when one is awake yet asleep.

In our limited capacity all of us would have experienced this at some point of time.

And this sleep wakefulness is not bound by either Space or Time as Pure Consciousness can not be bound by Time or Space for Brahman;it is Its attribute.

Brahman, as Narayana represents this principle in His Ananthasayanam(Cosmic hibernation)

One may note that we call Anantha Narayana and not Anantha Vishnu for Narayana and Vishnu are different aspects of Reality Brahman.

  • Adi Shatakam Descartes Advaita

The essential difference between the philosophers of The East and The West lies in fact that while those in the East relie on Direct Experience more, while those of the West go through Reason(Rationalists)

True there are also philosophers called Empiricists, who rely on Empirical experience, starting from John Locke.

But their experience is limited to Experience as a Tool and not anything more.

In India the experience which the Philosophers speak of is the actual feeling of Oneness with the Reality.

In the sixteenth century there was a reassessment of Scientific thoughts and Philosophy.

Though most of the earlier thoughts of Socrates, Aristotle and Plato were accepted, the Philosophers wanted to reason them out.

Also there was the Church Dogma.

    Adi Sankaracharya
    Adi Sankaracharya

In came Rene Descartes,a Great Mathematicians(Nearly all great Philosophers were great Mathematicians too,Descartes, Locke, Leibniz,Spinoza, Pythagoras,Bertrand Russel).

He wanted to find the Truth of the origin of the World.

He started by questioning his beliefs, for , to him, they were planted in his Mind by others.

    Rene Descartes Quote.
I Think , Therefore, I am -Rene Descartes.

He tested the senses , found that they do not give out the facts exactly(ex.You dip your hands in cold water, then in hot water;the warm water takes more time to be felt as warm, similarly with Cold water:another instance he quotes is that of a Man with jaundice, for him the World is Yellow-which it is not).

Therefore he discounted the senses as well.

In the same vein he discounted and rejected all the sources of Knowledge.

    Then he observes,

Cogito ergo sum (FrenchJe pense donc je suis; English: “I think, therefore I am”)

“Ac proinde hæc cognitio, ego cogito, ergo sum, est omnium prima & certissima, quæ cuilibet ordine philosophanti occurrat.”

English: “This proposition, I think, therefore I am, is the first and the most certain which presents itself to whoever conducts his thoughts in order.”-Principles of Philosophy ,Rene Descartes.

that is you can doubt everything but never the fact that You Doubt.

    Doubting implies a Doubter,

    Thinker implies a Thinker,

So, ‘I Think, Therefore I am’

This has become the bedrock of Western Thought.

Now Sankaracharya, though a strict Vedantin , Gnana Yogi and Bhakthi Yogi takes the route of Skepticism to prove the existence of the Reality quite effortlessly.

    Look at these lines.

    Mano-Buddhy-Ahangkaara Cittaani Naaham
    Na Ca Shrotra-Jihve Na Ca Ghraanna-Netre |
Na Ca Vyoma Bhuumir-Na Tejo Na Vaayuh
    Cid-Aananda-Ruupah Shivo[a-A]ham Shivo[a-A]ham ||1||

    Meaning:
1.1: Neither am I the Mind nor Intelligence or Ego,
1.2: Neither am I the organs of Hearing (Ears), nor that of Tasting (Tongue), Smelling (Nose) or Seeing (Eyes),
1.3: Neither am I the Sky, nor the Earth, Neither the Fire nor the Air,
1.4: I am the Ever Pure Blissful Consciousness; I am Shiva, I am Shiva,

Atma Shatakam or Nirvana Shatakam Sloka 1

    Exactly what Descartes speaks of.

But the destination of Descartes was different.

But the method for the existence of the Self is the same.

Descartes assigns Two Realities Mind and Matter and brings in God in his Philosophy,Idealism

  • Who Owns The World Isa Upanishad 1

The World is run by Principles.

Nothing in the world is without a reason or Direction.

Execution of a simple job needs planning and direction.

The world runs and IS  with clock like precision.

These principles remain indifferent to the fact whether one becomes aware of them or not.

We keep on discovering (?) the principles of Nature, repudiating our earlier Theories.

But these Principles are in operation despite our understanding or misunderstanding of them.

To day Science is veering around the view that there isa Central Theory, Unified Theory that links all the Theories of Science.

    A Theory requires a Theorist.

Doubt implies a Doubter, Thinking implies a Thinker

    I Doubt, therefore I AM”-Rene Descartes.

All these principles of Nature require a Master.

    There isa Unified Theory.

All things in the Universe are covered by This Principle.

    They are  ”His.

    We are but custodians.

We do not own them or even stake a claim to them.

So one is not to covet anything in this Universe. for it is not ours.

As it is our Nature to covet, let us practice Detachment and protect us from pain by cultivating Detachment.

‘om isa vasyamidam sarvam yatkincha jagatyam jagat ।
tena tyaktena bhunjitha ma grdhah kasyasviddhanam ॥ 1॥’
