Now, after hearing hastily the symptoms, and in certain cases ask the patient what medicine he/she had taken the last time,starts writing a string of medicines and recommend a plethora of tests.
Examining patients and taking a medical history are more useful to hospital doctors in diagnosing patients than high-tech scans, according to a study from Israel.
Tests such as CT scans and ultrasounds add to hospital bills, but doctors said that such tests given right after patients showed up in emergency rooms only helped with diagnosis in roughly one of three cases, the study — published in the Archives of Internal Medicine — said.
There is also research showing that the radiation from multiple CT scans might increase the risk of cancer over the long term.
To see whether such scans were really helpful, researchers led by Ami Schattner of Kaplan Medical Center in Rehovot, Israel, followed all the patients who showed up at the emergency room of a teaching hospital and were subsequently admitted.
“Basic clinical skills remain a powerful tool, sufficient for achieving an accurate diagnosis in most cases,” Schattner and his colleagues wrote.
“Physicians may count more on their clinical faculties when making decisions about patients.”

Scientists have created a new molecule from curcumin, the key chemical component of the spice turmeric. In laboratory experiments, the molecule was shown to affect the mechanisms that protect and regenerate brain cells after a stroke.
The new curcumin compound, called CNB-001, actually repairs stroke damage at the molecular level.
“Those who cook Indian, Thai, Malay and Persian dishes know turmeric well for its zesty flavor, use in curries and for the rich color it imparts to food. Turmeric also has a long history of use in Ayurvedic and Chinese traditional medicine.”
Curcumin — the pigment that gives the curry spice turmeric its yellow-orange color — is a natural compound that should be on your health radar for a number of reasons. Both the ancient Chinese and Indian systems of medicine have recognized curcumin’s beneficial properties for thousands of years, and modern research suggests it may be one of nature’s most powerful potential healers.

So What is a Stroke?

Curcumin Drug May Help Regenerate Brain Cells after Stroke
Contrary to the clot-busting drug currently used on stroke victims, the curcumin-hybrid compound, called CNB-001, does not actually dissolve the blood clot. Rather it repairs the damage incurred by the lack of oxygen, at the molecular level, by influencing the mechanism responsible for regeneration of neurons (brain cells).
This offers future stroke victims new hope for greater recovery, as it may reduce lasting damage. The research was presented at the American Heart Association International Stroke Conference in Los Angeles on February 9.
Now, although curcumin itself has been found to have great healing potential, including in the treatment of brain injury, it has drawbacks that makes it unsuitable for emergency treatment of stroke.
Physorg reports:
“[Curcumin] is not well absorbed in the body, fails to reach its target in high concentrations, becomes depleted quickly, and is blocked from entering the brain by a natural protective mechanism called the blood-brain barrier.”
The curcumin-derived compound CNB-001, however, does cross the blood brain barrier and “moderates several critical mechanisms involved in neuronal survival,” according to lead researcher Dr. Lapchak, PhD.
What this means is that if you’re having signs of stroke, do not reach for the spice jar or a turmeric supplement. Seek immediate emergency medical attention! Turmeric cannot be used as a make-shift home-remedy for a stroke. I just want to make that perfectly clear.
The hybrid spice-drug compound may however help save lives in an emergency setting later on. According to Physorg’s report:
“The drug reduced stroke-caused “motor deficits”—problems of muscle and movement control—in this laboratory study. It was effective when administered up to an hour after stroke, which correlates with about three hours in humans, the same time frame for which tPA is currently approved.”
There’s a time and place for conventional medicine, and stroke is one of those times when a drug can save your life. That said, considering how devastating (not to mention life threatening) a stroke can be, it would be in your best interest to adjust your lifestyle to prevent it from ever happening in the first place.

Physicians have recommended vitamin D supplements to their patients for a decade, with good reason: dozens of studies have shown a correlation between high intake of vitamin D—far higher than most people would get in a typical diet and from exposure to the sun—and lower rates of chronic diseases, such as cancer and type 1 diabetes. So when the Institute of Medicine, which advises the government on health policy, concluded in November that vitamin D supplements were unnecessary for most Americans and potentially harmful, patients were understandably confused.
The issue exposes a rift among experts over what constitutes valid proof when it comes to nutrition and could affect medical advice on many other supplements. On the one hand are scientists who insist that the only acceptable standard is the randomized clinical trial, which often compares the effects of a medical intervention, such as high intake of vitamin D, with those of a placebo. The scientists who reviewed the vitamin D findings fall heavily into this camp: trials “typically provide the highest level of scientific evidence relevant for dietary reference intake development,” they wrote. Their report set intake levels based only on clinical trial data.
The institute panel, however, discarded a raft of observational studies, in which researchers compare the health of populations who take vitamin D supplements with those who do not. In theory, such epidemiological studies are inferior to clinical studies because they rely on observations out in the real world, where it is impossible to control for the variables scientists seek to understand. Researchers compensate for the lack of control by using large sample sizes—some vitamin D studies track 50,000 people—and applying statistical techniques. According to these studies, high levels of vitamin D are generally beneficial.
In the aftermath of the institute report, some physicians are now taking potshots at clinical studies. In nutrition, they say, true placebo groups are hard to maintain—how do you prevent people in a control group from, say, picking up extra vitamin D from sunlight and food, which can lead to underestimating the vitamin’s benefits? It is also tough to single out the effect of one vitamin or mineral from others, because many work in tandem. “It is wrong-headed thinking that the only kind of evidence that is reliable is a randomized controlled trial,” says Jeffrey Blumberg, a Tufts University pharmacologist.

Why do women today have bigger breasts?
Some experts say the boom in bust size may be explained by the popularity of cosmetic implants: 10,000 breast implants are carried out every year.
Significantly more women have breast enhancements than they do reductions: 2004 figures from a BUPA Hospital in Edinburgh show that of the 21-30 age group who had cosmetic surgery, 60 per cent opted for breast augmentation and only seven per cent wanted a breast reduction.
Other experts highlight the effect of hormones – breast tissue is extremely sensitive to these, with some women finding they need a bigger bra in the week leading up to a period. This is a major reason why the contraceptive pill – which also leads to fluid retention in the breast – has been linked to the increase in breast size.
“There is a tendency for the pill to stimulate breast growth,” says Professor Pierre-Marc Cilles Bouloux, a consultant endocrinologist and physician at The London Clinic. “However, modern versions of the pill contain far less oestrogen than their older counterparts, so it is not fair to attribute this shift in its entirety to the pill.”
The residual oestrogen that gets into the water supply from people on the pill is also thought by some to be a factor.
Other speculative theories include the suggestion that levels of artificial hormones in the foodchain could be affecting breast sizes, though there is no research to back this up. Foods from baked beans to almonds have also been touted as factors in increasing breast size, but this is speculative.
In fact, it seems that the most significant and likely explanation for our growing bust size is the simplest – bigger breasts is a result of weight gain all round. Since the 1950s, the average female waist has risen from 27.5in to 34in. So, is it any wonder that breasts are getting bigger too?

A few years ago some UK researchers turned to the world and said “We have good news and we have better news”. The good news was that someone actually gave them money to study boob sizes around the world. The better news was that their findings showed that, worldwide, breasts are getting bigger and bigger.
Just in the UK alone, the average bra size had gone up from 34B to a way juicier 36C. As for the rest of the world, breast sizes had been continuously going up for the last 10-15 years, averaging now almost an entire cup bigger than just a decade ago. If this trend continues, someday we might actually need an M-cup bra size.
Plastic surgeries must have some part in this, but diet and lifestyles cannot be ignored. We definitely eat more and exercise less now, and all that fat has to go somewhere – the fact that it seems to be going mainly to breasts is the best evidence that God exists and that he loves us.
There Do Exist Women with Three Breasts.

Or so we thought. Thanks to a wondrous example of life imitating art it turns out that some women can have 3 breasts. The medical condition is called “polymastia” or “supernumerary breasts” and works just like the superfluous nipple bit. Some supernumerary breasts (see, even science knows that those are “super”!) might not even make their presence known until puberty, that special time when a polymastic girl first starts to resemble a prostitute from a cheesy Sci-Fi movie.
Location wise, polymastia can manifest itself virtually anywhere on the front of the body, hopefully somewhere between the first and second b00b. So that’s one accurate prediction “Total Recall” has made. Now, where are our virtual reality machines?
Breast Implants Can Save Your Life.
In 2006 a women from the Bulgarian city of Ruse was in a pretty horrific car accidents that left both cars totaled. She and the other driver survived but in her case it was thanks solely to those bigger plastic tits which took upon themselves the force of the impact, rupturing right there on the spot and leaving the women alive, though heavily deflated.
If it wasn’t for them, the woman might have hit the steering wheel full on, damaging her internal organs and maybe even banging up her heart a little. This is an obvious sign that Evolution wants our women to have bigger knockers. Maybe later down the line car companies will get rid of airbags altogether and simply offer free b00b jobs to female drivers with each purchase.
Last week the FDA reported that breast implants put women’s lives in danger. The big news last week was that a small number of women can get a very rare type of cancer (ALCL: anaplastic large cell lymphoma). It confirmed that death is a possible side effect of breast implants.
But what no one is talking about are all the other more frequent, more common and very real dangers and problems that go along with breast implants. Does the FDA really believe that if we don’t kill too many women it’s acceptable to disfigure them and compromise women’s health in other less lethal ways?
