  • The Eight Forms Of Bhairava Photo Essay

Bhairava is Lord Shiva in His Fiercest Manifestation.

It may be worth mentioning that Shiva is different from Rudra, which is yet another manifestation of Shiva( Actually the pronunciation is Siva).

Kaal Bhairava is an fierce incarnation of Lord Shiva. The term Bhairava means “Terrific”.

He is often depicted with frowning, angry eyes and sharp, tiger’s teeth and flaming hair, stark naked except for garlands of skulls and a coiled snake about his neck.

In his four hands he carries a noose, trident, drum, and skull. He is often shown accompanied by a dog. Once Brahma insulted Lord Shiva and his fifth head teasingly laughed at Lord Shiva.

From Lord Shiva came out the Kalabhairava (Black Bhairava) who tore off the fifth head of Lord Brahma.

On the entreaties of Lord Vishnu, Shiva pardoned Lord Brahma. But the sin (in the form of a lady) of beheading Lord Brahma followed Kalabhairava everywhere. Also the head of Brahma stuck to him. To keep away the sin and punishment which were chasing him, Kalabhairava entered the city of Benaras ( now Varanasi ). The sin could not enter the city. Kalabhairava was made as the Kotwal (Inspector) of the city of Varanasi. Bhairava rides on a dog.

A pilgrimage to Kasi (Benares) is not supposed to be complete without visiting the temple of Kalabhairava.’

  • Four Headed Shiva Temple Pateshwar

One is used to seeing Lord Shiva with Three faces, or Linga Swarupa.

We are aware of the five heads of Shiva,

    Sathyajaatham,

    Vamadevam,

    Agora,

    Thatpurusha and

Surprising to know that there is a Temple near Satara,Maharashtra, where the sculpture of Shiva is found with Four heads.

Pateshwar is a village in Satara district of Maharashtra, known for rock-cut caves with shrines of Shiva.

Pateshwar is located about 11.26 km South East of Satara on the Satara-Kolhapur state highway in Maharashtra. While there are two ways of approaching Pateshwar, the most popular route is through Degaon village by State Transport buses, uutorickshaws apart from private cars. The other route is from the South through a village called Borgaon. This road is preferred by the locals, however tourists prefer the Degaon route.

Pateshwar has 8 ancient caves and many ancient stone carved deities of Lord Shiva and other deities. The place is known for having more than 1000 Shiva-lings (Also known as Pinds). Most important amongst these is the Maha Shiva Lingam which has intricate carvings. Many of the deities find references in the ancient Hindu Vedas and Puranas. The hill has approximately 52 types of plants which have medicinal value and semi-deciduous trees like Teak, Banyan, Jamun, Karvee. Flowers like the Malabar Delphinium and Sonki which are found on the Kaas plateau in abundance are also found on this hill. The animals mostly found are monkeys, rat snakes, wild pigs and one can also sight Peacocks in the valley down below.

There is a book written and published locally in Satara on Pateshwar which is titled ‘Shree Kshetra Pateshwar Darshan’”

  • Where Sun Rays Fall On Shiva On Shivaratri Thavasi Medai

Temples which are not well-known contain wonders and rare information.

The temple at Thavasi Medai in Dindigull District,Tamil Nadu has two Female Deities,Ambal while there is only one male Deity,Mahalingeswarar.

“Following Shivarathri, the rays of Sun fall on the presiding deity continuously for 30 days in the mornings and on Sri Bhairava in the evenings.

While we see only one Ambica in Shiva shrines, there are two in this temple.

Presiding deity, Lord Mahalingeswarar graces facing east. In the shrine, right to Him, there are two Ambicas named after Meenakshi in Madurai. They are close to the wall facing south. The devotee has to peep closely into the shrine to have their darshan. They represent two powers – Icha Shakti and Gnana Shakti. Worshipping them would benefit the devotee with wisdom to know God.

As Maharshi Bharadwaja performed penance sitting on a platform with concentration on the Lord controlling all his senses, the place is known as Odukkam Thavasi Medai. Odukkam-controlling the senses; Thavasi-one performing penance and Medai-platform.

Aadhi Bhairava: Bhairava shrine is generally on the northeast corner in the temple. Here, He is just opposite Lord Shiva. As Lord Mahalineswara is all powerful, it is said that to protect the devotees from the scorching heat (Ugra), Bhairava is installed here balancing the temperature. Bhairava here is known as Aadhi Bhairava. There is a hole behind the Bhairava through which the devotees worship Lord Shiva and Bhairava before entering the temple.

Following Shivarathri, the rays of Sun God continuously fall on the Lord for thirty days during mornings and on Bhairava during the evenings.

Special pujas are performed on Magam star days remembering Maharshi Bharadwaja’s birth star.

  • Shiva Temple In The Sea

A unique temple of Shiva in the sea is in Bhavnagar District,Gujarat.

    Temple in the sea.
    Shiva Temple in the Sea

Koliyak is located at a distance of about 23 km to the east of Bhavnagar. It is said that Pandavas established Nishkalank or Nakalank Mahadev on a new moon night of the Indian calendar month of Bhadarva. The famous fair popularly known as ‘Bhadarvi’ is held on the new moon night in month of Sharvan, as per the Indian calender. An idol of god Shankar was established in an island, over the sea about 3 km to the east of Koliyak. This temple can be reached between 9.00 am to 12.00 pm on the day next to the new moon night. It has to be noted that the place gets inundated under the tide so the visitors should leave the place before 1.00 pm

    Temple legend:

Pandavas killed all the Kuravas and won the battle. Pandavas were grief stricken knowing they acquired sins for killing their own relatives.

In order to find redemption for their sins, Pandavas met Lord Krishna.

To remove the sins, Krishna hands over a black Flag and a Black COW. He asks the Pandavas to follow it, when both Cow and flag turns white, they all will be pardoned.

Krishna also advises them to do penance to lord Shiva, after that.

The angst stricken brothers followed the cow wherever it went and carried the flag.

They walked for days, to different places and the color did not change.

Finally, when they arrived at the Koliyak Beach, both cow and the flag color turned to white. Pandavas were exalted.

And all the 5 brothers sat for deep penance, meditated on lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva impressed by the brothers showed up in lingam form to each brother.

As they meditated, each lingam appeared in front of each brother. In total there were 5 (Swayumbu) lingams that showed up on their own.

Pandavas were delighted to see this and they worshiped all the five lingams with great devotion.

Lord Shiva here is known as Nishkalan Mahadev. ‘Nishkalank’ has many meaning they are clean, pure, guiltless, to cleanse, to purify, etc.

It is said that Pandavas established Nishkalank or Nakalank Mahadev on a Amavasai of the Indian calendar month of Bhadarva.

The famous fair popularly known as ‘Bhadarvi’ is held on the no moon night in month of Sharvan (August), as per the Indian calendar.

An idol of Lord Shiva was established in an island, over the sea about 3 km to the east of Koliyak. Each lingam has a Nandhi facing it.

The lingams are spread across a square Platform.

There is a pond called Pandavas pond and devotees’ first wash their hands and legs and only then they visit the Lord Shivas shrines.

Devotees’ throng this temple during Amavasai (no moon day), it is to be noted here that the tides are very active during full moon day and no moon day, yet devotees patiently wait for the tides to retrieve.
There is strong belief that when loved ones are cremated their ashes are immersed in these waters and by doing so, one attains salvation or moksha. Besides ash, milk, curds and whole coconut are offered to the lord here.
The temple festival is initiated by hoisting the flag by the clans of Maharajas of Bhavnagar.
This flag is on for 364 days and is changed only during the next temple festival. And for the records, the flag has never fallen down or washed away by the tides. It stands undisturbed by the ferocious tides and has seen the deadliest earth quake that killed more than 50,000 people in 2001.
This is a wonder beauty. The devotees worship not many temples that are buried under the sea. However, this temple stands as an exception. Please visit this temple at least ones in a lifetime to experience the spirituality that resonates from this temple!
