Muruga with Sangu(Conch) and Discus(Chakra) Padikkasunallur.

“Padikkasunathar temple at Alagaputhur near Kumbakonam is one such temple where the presiding deity blesses His devotees with financial prosperity.

The main deity here is also known as Swarnapureeswarar.

His consort at this temple is Alagammai or Azhagammai.

The deity taken out in processions (Utsavar) during festivals is Somaskandar.

    The sthala vruksham is vilva.

The Shiva Linga is a swayam bhu or self manifested.

Alagaputhur is on the banks of the river Arasalar.

The old name for this place is Arisilkaraipudur.

This three-tiered temple is believed to be about 2000 years .

The priest at this temple was a staunch Shiva devotee who performed the daily pooja with great devotion along with all the customary offerings.

Famine and poverty struck the whole region that was once prosperous.

In spite of his poverty and the difficulty he had in making the ends meet, he never shirked from his “responsibility” of performing the daily poojas to the Lord. Please with his devotion, one night the Lord appeared in his dreams and granted a boon.

The priest wished that the village must become prosperous once again and that he himself should have enough to continue performing the daily poojas without any hurdle.

As per his wish Lord Shiva left him one gold coin at the steps of the temple everyday.

The priest used this to take care of the villagers and also to perform the daily pooja.

Soon the famine was gone and the village became prosperous once again.

The descendents of that noble priest are still the priests at this temple.

The priest performed the padikasu pooja for us.

We handed to him an even number of ten rupee notes for the pooja.

After performing the pooja the priest gave us back half of them (that is the reason for taking even number of currency notes).

The money retained by the priest is utilized for temple maintenance etc.

The priest asked us to preserve the currency notes he gave us and also issued detailed instructions on performing poojas at home using these.

Devotees believe that performing this ritual will bring prosperity.

Lord Muruga here is very unique.

He is seen with the Conch and Discus that one normally associates with Mahavishnu.

The story goes that it is the Conch and Discus given by Lord Vishnu to Muruga when He set out to wage a war on the demons

. He is seen sitting on a peacock with His consorts Valli and Deivayanai.

Since Muruga appears with both His consorts He is known as Kalyanasundara Shanmuga Subramanyar.

The decoration in the background is in the form of Om.

Talking of Om, there is a story linking this temple to the Swaminatha Swamy temple at Swamimalai.

Once Lord Brahma, the Creator was asked how he created life in the Universe.

Lord Brahma replied that he used the Pranava Mantra.

When Lord Muruga further asked Lord Brahma the meaning of the Pranava Mantra,

Lord Brahma was stumped for an answer.

An angry Muruga imprisoned Him and stripped Him of the responsibility of creation.

He took upon the responsibility Himself.

Lord Shiva approached Muruga and requested Him to free Brahma and reinstate Him as the creator.

He also wanted to know the meaning of the Pranava Mantra.

Lord Muruga taught Lord Shiva the meaning of this mantra at Swami Malai.

Later, when Lord Shiva appealed to Lord Muruga again, He relented.

He was also remorseful for having punished and insulted an elder for his ignorance.

Lord Muruga performed penance on Lord Shiva at this temple and sought forgiveness.

Lord Shiva pardoned Him and said that while pointing out of mistakes committed by the elders can be accepted, you should take sufficient care to ensure that it does not offend the elders.

This is one of the 275 Padal Petra Sthalams and all the four Great Saints have sung hymns in praise of the Lord at this temple.

This village is just about 2.5 Kames from Nachiyar Kovil on the Kumbakonam-Nachiyar Kovil-Tiruvarur route.

It is about 7 Kms from Kumbakonam. This temple is almost on the State Highway.

It is just a two-minute walk from the highway.

The bus services are frequent and is well connected with the important places around here.

  • Suriyanar Koil Where Deities Lay Down Their Arms

Hinduism has elaborated on the planets and their system os Astronomy is at least 5000 years old.

According to them , there are only Nine Planets.

Two planets called Rahu and Ketu are called ‘Chaya Grahas-Shadow Planets’ amidst the Navagrahas.(Nine Planets)

Each Planet is ascribed with qualities, designated with Dresses, food that should be offered to them.

Is Pluto a planet? Does it qualify? For an object to be a planet, it needs to meet these three requirements defined by the IAU:

    • It needs to be in orbit around the Sun – Yes, so maybe Pluto is a planet.
    • It needs to have enough gravity to pull itself into a spherical shape – Pluto…check
    • It needs to have “cleared the neighborhood” of its orbit – Uh oh. Here’s the rule breaker. According to this, Pluto is not a planet.

Now onto the subject on hand.

The Planets have Arms assigned to them.

They always appear with their Arms in all the Temples.

But not in Suriyanar Koil , located near Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu.

Here all of them have laid down their Arms and are in the posture of Abhaya Hastham,Boon Granting, Refuge Granting Mode.

This is so for they have come to worship Lord Surya, The first among them all and who is regarded as the Perceivable manifestation of Reality.

He is called ‘Prathyaksha Brahman'( The Perceivable Reality).

So in front of him these Planets  are present with out their Arms and each of them have a separate  Enclave in this Temple.

Another interesting Feature is that Lord Surya, has, in front of him  ‘Brihaspati’ (Jupiter) as one needs the Blessings and the Graceful eyes of The Guru (Teacher) for Prosperity.

Thousands of years back, two Rishies ( saints ) Gowthama and Gargeya did penance in this garden of mullai flowers. The story is that, Sage Nithuvar was living here with his wife Vedhika. One day when Sage Nithuvar was away, sage Urdhvapada visited the mullai garden.. Vedhika was tired and sleeping deeply without showing hospitality to the sage..infact she was having pains due to pregnancy but Urdhvapada unaware of her difficulties got angry that she din’t bother to wake up and felt she could be sleeping purposely , decided to curse her .The curse made her get diseased and it also hurted the child in her womb.Vedhika was in worst pain of her life and deeply hurted that her own child is being gradually destroyed and prayed for to Goddess Parvathi to help her ….Goddess parvathi took the avatar of Garbarakshambigai and appeared before Vedhika and protected her child in the womb by holding it in a “kalasam ” – divine pot..The goddess has helped the child grow in the divine pot untill it grew as full fledged child. .. Scientifically people know about test tube baby, but it has happened before thousands of years in our holy country, india, where goddess herself has saved a womens pregnancy and blessed her.

When Vedhika cried as she was not able to feed the baby with her milk, A sacred cow came infront of the temple and made a lake of sacred milk. The sacred “kulam” is found even now where i fed pori for fishes when i visited the temple. Vedhikai prayed to Goddess Garbarakshambigai to remain in the temple forever and bless all women with good soul mate, child birth and safe pregnancy.”

    Temple Place
    Malligarjuna (Thalai-top) Sri Sailam (Andhra)
Madhyarjuna (Idai-middle) Idaimarudur Kumbakonam (Thanjavur Dt)
Sputarjuna (kadai-end) Thiruppudaimarudur Ambasamudram (Thirunelvelli Dt)

This place is named as Idaimarudur as it is in between Srisailam and Ambasamudram. It is also called Shanbagaranya, Saktipura, Tapovana, Muktipura etc.

The presiding Deity is Mahalinga (Great Linga) because Siva worshipped Himself. Her consort is Perunalamamulaiammai. She is Bruhatsundara Gujamabika. In her Shrine is a cell facing north. This is the temple of Mookaambika (in North Indian style). The Goddess is in the pose of doing penance. She is mentioned as Pidari Parameeswari in inscripitions. There are many Lingas in the Shrine. Agasthiya Linga, Kasyapa Linga, Chola Linga , Chera Linga, Sahasara Linga, Panchabhuta Linga, a cluster of 27 Lingas behind Chokkanatha are some.

Brahmahathi (Hathi- sin caused by a murder – Brahminicide) is found in the south wall (south torana vayil) with head disheveled and face immersed betwixt the knees. Varaguna Pandiya’s horse accidentally crushed a Brahmin and killed him. The sin followed wherever he went. The king came to this temple. The Brahmahathi could not enter and waited outside. The king went out by another entrance. The Brahmahathi is waiting outside still. The king was relieved of his melody. People inflicted with mental disorders go round the circumambulatory path and get redress.

    There are two Puranam

    Brahmahathi,Thiruvidaimaruthur
    Brahmahathi
    1. Sthala purana written by Sivakkolundu Deshika of Kottaiyar
    2. Marudavana Puranam.

There is an Ula written by Mahavidvan Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai. The Thevaram, Thiruvasagam, Thiruvidaimarudur Mummanikkovai, Thiruppazh, Thiruvidaimaurudur Pathirruppathanthathi, Thiruvidaimaurudur Kalambakam, Thiruvidaimarudur Nondi Natakam contain sufficient information about the temple. Kandapuranam, Lingapurana, Brahmavaivartham and Sivarahasya mention the glory of the Lord.

Pandiyan King, Varaguna, who, according to tradition, lived in the seventh century A.D. Once he went for hunting in a nearby forest and when he started back home, dusk had already fallen. The horse, fatiqued by the hunt, was anxious to get back to the stables, and literally flew over the path. Meanwhile an aged Brahmin, also travelling through the forest, had called it a day and was lying fast asleep under the shelter of a large tree. Unfortunately the path which the King’s horse took was led over the very place where the old man lay sleeping. The hooves of the horse crushed his chest, and he perished on the spot. So fast was horse that the King had no inkling of this terrible calamity. Only when the soldiers following him saw the dead Brahmin and informed him, did the King come to know of the tragedy. He lost no time in observing the penances and sacrifices ordained in the sastras for absolution from this sin; but the damage was done Brahmahathi (spirit of the dead Brahmana) clung to him all the more tightly. In despire, the King sought the help of Lord Sundaresvara of Madurai.

Such was the sincerity and devotion this grief-stricken King that one day as he was circumambulating the shrine, he heard a divine voice command: “Do not despair O King ! A Chola king will invade your Kingdom soon. Fight him and he will be defeated. As he flees back to his country, chase him without harming him. He will lead you to Thiruvidai-marudoor where Lord Shiva Himself worshipped His own image. There the sin which is clinging to you now will leave you”.

One has to see the Brhmahathi ,located near the nadi, see it, see the Nandi , worship Lord Mahalinga.

It should not be seen or worshipped after the Darhan of the Lord Mahalinga.

This Temple also has 28 Nakshatras’Idols.

The 28th Nakshatra is called ‘Abhijeet’

I may mention that the Abhijt Muhurtha is normally between 12 and 1230 pm and it is not necessary to look for an auspicious time for performance of auspicious events.

Each Nakshatra has a Lingam assigned to it.It is recommended that archana with Vilvam for the respective Lingam associated with the specific Nakshatra is performed.

In the Prharam, there is a small sannidhi dedicated to Lord Krishna(as a Crawling child) as revealed to Sage Kashyapa along with Lord Siva

Boarding or Lodging facilities are not upto the mark.

Suggest staying in Kumbakonam or Myladuthurai.

    Abhijit Muhurtha.

According to Vedic astrology there is a special muhurat called abhijit. This muhurat is auspicious for any work. Abhijit muhurtha is not special to any particular condition but it is present every day. Astrologers say that a day’s 8th muhurat is called abhijit muhurat.

The duration of the abhijit muhurat lingers up to 48 minutes. 24 minutes before and after the sidereal time is called the abhijit muhurat. Basically it stays up to 48 minutes but the duration may reduce if the day is shorter. As the abhijit muhurat is auspicious people opt for this muhurat to perform their work. Abhijit muhurat safeguards a work even if the day is inauspicious.

Astrologers say that if in any condition an auspicious work does not have a good muhurat then natives can perform their works on the auspicious abhijit muhurat.
