    Survey On Indian Paid Media.

That “paid news” is a phenomenon that is deleterious to the credibility and independence of the media itself needs to be emphasized. Edelman, an independent public relations firm, in its 2010 Trust Barometer Survey (conducted in 22 countries worldwide, including India and six other countries in the Asia-Pacific region) stated that the Indian media has been losing its credibility and trust among the people. The study, which sampled 1,575 people in the 25-64 age group and 200 opinion leaders in India, noticed a sharp drop in trust over the past two years in television news in India. However, newspapers are ranked higher than other media in terms of credible news with people trusting newspapers more than any other medium: 38 per cent of the Indians polled trusted radio and television, while 40 per cent trusted news in newspapers. Over the past two years, trust in television news dropped sharply from 61 per cent to 36 per cent, that of business magazines has gone down from 72 per cent to 47 per cent, and that of newspapers has gone down from 61 per cent to 40 per cent. Trust in the media in India as a whole declined by 7 per cent (from 65 per cent in 2009 to 58 per cent in 2010). On the other hand, China has seen the trust in media go up from 59 per cent in 2009 to 63 per cent in 2010. However, in terms of overall trusted institutions in India, media has performed better than the government as an institution. Sixty-seven per cent of Indians trust business as an institution, followed by the Indian media in the second position, with 58 per cent Indians trusting it. Non-government organizations (NGOs) and the government are placed in third and fourth positions, respectively

From BBC.-British Media is no better.

India’s media is one of the nation’s great glories, with 250 radio stations, 850 TV channels and 93,000 registered newspapers and magazines. It is one of the few countries in the world where newspaper readership is growing.

But just how free is India’s free press? Shilpa Kannan investigates the growing concern over ‘paid media’, in which powerful business and political interests ensure they get favourable coverage. This takes many forms. Advertising content in newspapers is reprinted as straight news: politicians send the text of articles they want published directly to news outlets and pay cash fees for the privilege: or businessmen build cosy connections with media outlets. It is widely believed that many media outlets have ‘rate cards’, which outline the fees for positive coverage. Conflicts of interest abound: freelance journalists are frequently given fees for attracting advertising as well as reporting the news.

There have been over 1,400 cases where the Election Commission detected alleged paid news in polls in 17 states over the last four years. Now the Indian parliament has been considering legislation which will outlaw the practice – although detecting and proving it is likely to be tough.

Shilpa asks if the phenomenon is likely to be a threat to India’s democracy.:

“Nira Radia, a political and business lobbyist, was found to be part of a wide nexus among politicians, businessmen and journalists through which news was manipulated. Names of senior and celebrated journalists Barkha Dutt, Prabhu Chawla and Vir Sanghvi did crop up in this controversy but with media ethics of maintaining high journalistic standards lying in shreds, all of them continue to hold high positions even as the public trust in a partisan media erodes fast. (Tapes are available under ‘Radia Tapes in this site, more on this under Corruption as well)

    Paid Newspapers.

The Tribune has always been a centrist newspaper covering the regions of North India such as Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and J&K.

The Pioneer is the second oldest English newspaper to be printed in India. It has always shown a pro-BJP, right wing.

The statesman has always been a left wing, anti-establishment newspaper.

The Hindu too has been open about its ideologies and doesn’t shy away from being declared an organized left newspaper

    .

While The Indian Express now supports congress, The New Indian Express continues to support NDA and right wing ideologies.

    Hindustan Times.

This newspaper is probably the worst case of partisan media. It can easily be mistaken for a Congress published newspaper as it has become nothing but a mouthpiece for Congress propaganda.

The Times of India is the leading English language newspaper in India. It tries to present an image of being a nationalist newspaper but has not been able to shed it bias towards the UPA government, now and then.

The Time group, whc Iincludes Timesnow News Cahnnel will go all ou against every one except Sonia Gandhi and will clam up even against speaking her name.

  • Sonia Gandhi Named In Corruption In Italian Court

Sonia Gandhi has been named  by the prosecutors in an Italian Court along with Ahmed Patel in connection with Agusta  Westland  Helicopter case.

I received the following Tweet and followed it.

    The story .

    Sonia Gandhi, Ahmed Patel
Sonia Gandhi Ahmed Patel Named in Italian Court

“In a note that Italian prosecutors have produced in court to allege the vital role played by middleman Christian Michel in fixing the VVIP chopper deal, the British ‘consultant’ has told top AgustaWestland officials to ‘target’ the closest advisers for UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi for the contract.

The March 2008 note, which has been sent by the elusive Christian Michel to Peter Hulett, the then Head of Region, Govt Sales at the AgustaWestland India office, is one of the many documents that Italian investigators seized from the office of Switzerland based middleman Guido Haschke who is currently facing trial in the case of alleged 51 million euro kickbacks generated in the Indian VVIP chopper deal.

India has in January terminated the deal on the grounds that the integrity pact was violated and that unfair practices were adopted to bag the deal by Agusta. The Defence Ministry is currently engaged in an arbitration process on the contract that was inked in 2010. The March 15, 2008 note that has been produced in Italian court is addressed to Peter and instructs him to advise the British High Commissioner in India (AgustaWestland is an Anglo-Italian firm) to ‘target’ people close to Sonia Gandhi.

“As Mrs Gandhi is the driving force behind the VIP, she will not fly any more in the Mi 8. Mrs Gandhi and her closest advisers are the people the High Commissioner should target,” the note reads. Mi 8′s are the current VIP role choppers flown by the air force. The document has been produced by prosecutors as part of their questioning of Guido Haschke. In January, as reported by The Indian Express, they also asked Haschke in court if the reference to an abbreviation of AP in a ‘budget sheet’ of the middlemen referred to Gandhi’s key aide Ahmed Patel. Italian newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano has also reported that the prosecutors produced a photograph of Sonia Gandhi and Ahmed Patel during the hearing to question Haschke but the middlemen said that he only recognised Gandhi from the picture.”

  • Why Sonia Not included as Corrupt by Anna, Three Monkeys of Mahatma

    Sonia gandhi early days

Dr.Subramanian Swamy’s is the lone voice that has the courage to utter the name of Sonia Gandhi as Corropt.

Barring him, none of the media utters a single word against Sonia Gandhi.

Sonia Gandhi is so sacrosanct for the Media that these investigators could not( or did not want to!) find out about the illness of Sonia Gandhi and her admission into the a Hospital in the US.

It was conveniently omiited and it was for useless bloggers like me to ferret out the details.

Even after this, the media never uttered the word’Cervical Cancer.

Media keeps quiet on the ownership of DLF Real Estate.

Those in the know who it belongs to in reality and what Robert Wadhera has to do with it.

Media will intrude the labour Ward of Ms.Aiswarya  Rai Bachchan , but no news will be flashed about Priyanka’s kids.

Nor would there be a whisper about Rahul Gandhi’s Colombian Girl friend  or a killing of a girl.

The Media respects the Privacy of  Sonia Gandhi.

Well, what can you expect when the Media in India is not Indian at all?

“A very popular TV news media is funded by Gospels of Charity in Spain Supports Communism. Recently it has developed a soft corner towards Pakistan because Pakistan President has allowed only this channel to be aired in Pakistan . Indian CEO Prannoy Roy is co-brother ofPrakash Karat, General Secretary of the Communist party of India . His wife and Brinda Karat are sisters.

    India Today :

    Team Anna:

How does one expect Team Anna expect to include as a word from Sonia Gandhi would make Anna Hazare run for cover , especially if she utters the Bribery case about Anna .

Kejriwal does not dare, his former employers are waiting.

Baba Ramdev? None knows how much he owns on behalf of Mrs,S.

  • Vodafone-led Foreign Investors Planned a Coup in India

A military exercise on fog preparedness this January scared Delhi’s Central government, leaving it “spooked as never before in peace time.”

This news was flashed in the Indian Express ,India.(4th April 2012)

Of course the Government of India, through the Defence  Minister and The Prime Minister have denied this.

On listening to their rebuttal, one is not convinced that they are convinced!

Another report emerged in The New,York Times of 4th of April that  three Groups were planning a coup against the UPA Government at the Centre.

Vodafone led Foreign Investors’ Group is one among them.

However the report says that the idea of a coup in India is not possible.

But the first public information that Corporates are involved in an attempt is shocking, however strongly they may deny the report.

It is in the minds of News followers, especially after Scams and the cancellation of Licences of those tainted by 2 G scam by The Supreme Court of India -Giant Corporates-that they will not take this lying down.

The revelation by Radia tapes exposes the nexus  between Politicians and the Business Houses.

Now when Crores are involved in Coal Scam and Tatra affair, where Army Officials were reported to have been involved and this incident comes  in the wake of the feud between the Ministry of Defence and The Army Chief, the threat of a Coup seems to be real, though it may not materialize in the near future.

The Government and The Supreme Court must be vigilant and Anarchists like Anna Hazare must know that by their irresponsible behaviour are destroying the fabric of Democracy in India.

They should know how to agitate(their cause is good).

    Refers to:

Essentially, late on the night of January 16 (the day Army Chief General V K Singh approached the Supreme Court on his date of birth issue), central intelligence agencies reported an unexpected (and non-notified) movement by a key military unit, from the mechanised infantry based in Hisar (Haryana) as a part of the 33rd Armoured Division (which is a part of 1 Corps, a strike formation based in Mathura and commanded by Lt Gen. A K Singh) in the direction of the capital, 150 km away.

Any suspicion was still considered much too implausible, but lookouts were alerted as a routine step. This was part of a protocol put in place in June 1984 when some mutineers from Sikh units had moved towards the capital in the wake of Operation Bluestar.

The lookouts confirmed the movement of what looked like a sizeable unit. It was soon identified as an entire unit of Mechanised Infantry, with its Russian-made Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs), carried on 48 tank transporters. The movement was towards the capital, which was odd.

    “Army’s Version.

    Indian Army version of exercise
    India Army explains exercise

Yes, the idea of a military-led coup in India seems far-fetched.

But, maybe it should come as no surprise that the government is a bit nervous about an overthrow attempt. After all, a number of groups are marching, literally or figuratively, towards central Delhi, with the aim of ousting the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance, or at least halting some of its activities.

Here’s a quick rundown on the groups currently advancing on the central government:

    The “Third Front:”

Talk of increased coordination between India’s regional political parties has only increased after the Congress Party and Congress’s biggest rival fared poorly in recent assembly elections. The “country needs a third front, which is secular and anti-corruption,” Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said in March, adding he had already spoken to West Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee, Tamil Nadu’s J. Jayalalithaa and Telugu Desam Party leader N. Chandrababu Naidu.

    The Vodafone-led Foreign Investors Alliance:

So-called “regressive, retrograde” proposals in India’s latest budget have sparked a storm of outrage from foreign companies, trade groups and overseas investors. Right now the outrage has manifest itself mainly in letter-writing campaigns and behind-the-scenes harassment of Finance Ministry officials, but the next logical step is a foreign-investment retreat, which could cripple India’s already slowing economy.

Watch out for unexpected tactical manoeuvrings from a splinter group led by Christopher Hohn, feisty hedge fund manager from The Children’s Investment Fund, who is suing Coal India, a government-run company, for mispricing coal and the failure to stop rampant theft, among other issues.

    The Anti-Corruption Movement, 2.0:

While Anna Hazare and his colleagues may have lost steam since the height of their anti-corruption protests last summer, there’s no reason to believe the public is any happier about corruption now. Eruption of new scandals, in areas from highways to defense spending, may fuel to a different type of grass-roots movement. Mr. Hazare, meanwhile, has not given up.

    Maoist guerrillas:

Despite aggressive talk from the Congress Party about routing the Maoists, also known as Naxalites, from the great swathes of central and eastern India under their control, they are still present here. And here. And here. “We do not have a ready solution,” for the Maoist problem, Union Home secretaryR.K. Singh said this week.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP:

Already present in Delhi. Not currently considered a major threat.

  • Bus Day, Pachayappa’s College Chennai.Rowdyism is not new.

    Emblem of the college
    Image via Wikipedia

This is not the first time the Pachiyappa College students engaged in vandalism.

What I narrate here happened in 1967/8-68/69, when I was a student of Vivekananda College Chennai and happened to be the College Union Secretary.

Economic Department of the Madras University  conducted  an event at the Madras University premises and students of all colleges were attending the function.( I did not attend the function)

We, at our college received information that a student of our College(Vivekananda ) was stabbed by a student of the Pachiyappa College and we decided to take action on the following day by convening the Student Council.

The next day the The Indian Express  published a news item under the heading ‘Rowdyism mar University function’.

On reading the headline , the students of Pachayappa College went on a procession through Mount Road and late Annadurai(who was a student of Pachiyappa College), who was at the Murasoli office at the time of the Day, came out and openly declared that the ‘Pachayappa College’ students should not behave like the rowdies of other colleges’, -calling the best behaved students of Vivekananda College as rowdies-one should note that the CM did not have any information as to what has happened and the fact Annadurai and Co were against the Vivekananda College as it was run(in his view) by Aryan Brahmins!

Enthused by his stupid and provocative remarks, the Pachayappa Students went on a rampage against our college and the Indian Express for a couple of Days.

We had to call in the Madras Students College Union  and enlisted the support of all colleges, except Thyagaraya College, which aligned with Pachayappa’s, and it took another couple of days for Annadurai to depute his Minister Late.V.R Neduncheziyan to our college and he complicated the issues by stating in Vivekananda College Assembly by declaring that he will never step into our College as the college was not worthy of  him and the enraged Students booed him   and he had to be escorted out.

Later Annadurai, through the Pachayappa College ,Shanmugasundaram ,I recall, and Ra.Janarthanan who was student leader of the Pachiyappa College(he was a DMK stooge and he is no more), expressed his regrets and that was that.

If one were to check the History of Student violence in Chennai ,one would invariably find Pachayappa Students involved in one way or another.

After all, this college is the home ground of disciplined DMK Leaders.

I envisage a stream of hate mail and a list of the luminaries from Pachayappa College, but they shall fail to note that the luminaries were prior to DMK junk.

A great Institution is being sullied by the goons of DMK.

Will Pachayappa’s authorities restore their old glory by throwing out these flotsams and jetsams?

“At least 30 police personnel, including an Assistant Commissioner of Police, and ten others were injured when a ‘Bus Day’ celebration turned violent in front of the Pachaiyappa’s College here on Wednesday, police said.

According to police sources, about 100 students took a Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus from Broadway to their college as part of their ‘Bus Day’ celebration around noon on Wednesday. A large posse of police personnel escorted them. On reaching the college premises, the students allegedly threw stones. Traffic was disrupted on EVR Salai following the incident.

“We exercised restraint and persuaded the students to disperse. They continued to throw stones indiscriminately…Six members of the public were also injured. Police used mild force to chase the unruly students into the campus,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kilpauk) S. Lakshmi said.

The injured police personnel were admitted to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital.

Four students were also hospitalised. “Police entered the campus without obtaining the permission of the management,” a professor of Pachaiyappa’s College said.

The incident took place a couple of days after the Madras High Court wanted to know why police were not taking action against unruly celebrations in the name of ‘Bus Day’. Explaining why police used force, Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran said the students kept on throwing stones on the police and public. “Public life and property was endangered. The Inspector of Police (Kilpauk) E. Rajeswari suffered a head injury…we had no other option but to chase the students. One MTC bus and two motorcycles were damaged in stone throwing,” he told The Hindu.”

    http://www.hindu.com/2011/02/24/stories/2011022463990100.htm

“The police crackdown on the so-called ‘bus day’ celebrations will continue, and all police personnel have been instructed to strictly implement the court-imposed ban on the menace in letter and spirit, the city police have told the Madras high court.

A counter-affidavit, filed by Chennai police commissioner J K Tripathy in response to a batch of public interest petitions against the recent ‘bus day’ violence in the city, said chargesheet against 14 persons, including 12 Pachaiyappa’s College students, will be filed shortly.

“The investigation is mostly complete. The final report will be filed in due course. The police risked their lives, rescued the general public, especially women and children, and made all efforts to bring the situation under control,” Tripathy said, referring to the February 9 rampage by Pachaiyappa’s College students. ”

    * the information can be verified by checking the archives of Indian Express.

It is worth noting that in the very nest year of this incident Pachiyappa College students were involved in the attack on the Madras City Transport buses and the Conductors and drivers retaliated in kind and this issue became a serious law and Order issue.
