“The conflict in Afghanistan is deteriorating in some ways and will “not remain winnable indefinitely,” the top US military commander in the country warned Thursday.
General Stanley McChrystal added that forces would be in a much stronger position once US President Barack Obama decides on troop levels in Afghanistan, while saying that it would be wrong to rush to make a decision.
“The situation is serious and I choose that word very, very carefully … neither success nor failure can be taken for granted,” said McChrystal, who has asked for up to 40,000 more troops to fight the Taliban.
“The situation is in some ways deteriorating but not in all ways,” he told the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) think-tank in London.”

Exactly what he is trying to say?
Win or lose?
These gentlemen seem to have a knack of handling English.
What he needs is to send in more troops and he can not guarantee a win-that is what he means.

Art of Writing.
It is an ongoing discussion whether Grammar is for Language or Language is for Grammar. The point is is both are important. After all Grammar is meant for easy comprehension by all of the language by setting forth general rules..However, as language evolves due to evolution of sociecy/values/usage of words need to be accommated.Bottom line is the communication must be lucid and without ambiguity. It may also be noted that writing grammatical English need not necessarily be constued as archaic or laboured.Thoughts can be conveyed elegantly following Grammar-For example-’Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety; Other women cloy the appetities they feed , she makes most hungry where she most satisfies’(Shakespeare-Antony and Cleopatra).See. how grammar and going away from grammar(most hungry, most satisfies) makes the passage beautiful.
What a treat to read! It is not a sin to follow grammar nor is it necessary to be grammatical always. The end result should bring joy to the reader;after all literature and any form of writing is an Art and it must be aesthetic.
