  • Health, Fitness,Courses,Aerobics, Fruit Diet Non Sense

‘Health Conscious and people who follow Health Care(?) and those who do not agree with them’ was  a programme telecast by Star Vijay TV yesterday in Tamil.

The people who were proud to call themselves as Health Conscious and ‘Health Freak'(their terminology) made a sorry sight.

    Health Care industry
    Health Care industry

There were people who were practicing Aerobics( the demonstration was so funny , it looked as a kid jumping here and there and the lady proudly proclaimed she was paying Rs.1000/m for the course for fitness and she looked obese to the point of panting while jumping),

to a girl who eats six meals a day,one with only fruits, next chicken without skin, salads, only Chapatis….:

a man who dispose of garbage personally to reduce weight, another applies special(?) Oil before gardening to reduce tummy!!

The List is endless and quite hilarious.

Another is consuming tablets instead of Breakfast and he said there people who were consuming only tablets all the time instead of Food, reason being the tablets contain nutrients found in Food!

More hilarious is are the reasons for following these Health care programmes.

    1.To ward of Cancer!

    2.Reduce Diabetes.

    3.Look trim.

    4.Prevent loss of Hemoglobin Count.

    5.Reduce Tummy.

There were times when we used to go to a Doctor when one is sick.

I remember , in my native place,, the doctor would give a Carbon mixture and if he goes in for an injection, it means , it is serious.

    His refrains were’

    Eat light,Sleep”

Now we go to a doctor at the drop of a hat.

Worse still we may not be ill.

    We think we might be.

    Then we have ‘Health Consciousness!

If you are not well, you will become conscious of it and not the other way round.

The Advertisements, Manufacturers of useless products and media  scare you to death and you immediately buy anything from something that can make you grow 50% Taller to reducing weight in one month.

    And internet!

Any one who can type goes to goggle and sees results, follow them, without knowing whether the information they get is authentic .

Read my post on the disastrous consequences of Dieting by following Internet advice.

In the midst of our conversation,or should I say my monologue, my friend received a call from well qualified, working daughter that she was feeling exhausted and was on the verge of collapse.

He immediately rushed to meet and take her Home.

    Reason for the complaint.

His daughter has been a Diet of only vegetables and Fruits since last night, as advised in an article she found in the Internet.

This was her effort at reducing weight and keeping fit.

My daughter also went on a Diet of not eating Rice the whole day and was eating only fruits for about a week before she was exhausted

The Human body knows how to take care of itself.

The food habits we have have been developed over centuries taking into account various factors including climate.

Being ideal weight is purely a matter of opinion.

There is no preventive medicine for Cancer, Obesity,Diabetes.

The suggested foods are only guesses and not based on correct findings.

Before some one jumps the gun , please check the counter view on any diet and weight. Diabetes etc.

Heart attack, Cholesterol .There is no final saying that cholesterol causes Heart attack  in fact it helps the Heart please read my post filed under Health).

Take every thing in moderation .

Don’t keep on thinking about illness and engage your self in work, some Physical.

I am no statistician, bu can say ‘Statistics is like a Bikini, it conceals more than  it reveals.

    From my personal experience .

My Father never even had fever till his death at the age of 78.

And he used to take Meals in the morning around 8 am;Curd rice at 1pm

    Again Curd rice at night.

Occasionally Snacks, idli dosa, adai etc.

He can consume One Jack Fruit at 6  am and ask my mother  for regular food at  8 am!

Quantity, well one can not imagine, such huge quantities.

Excepting a Heart attack  about 10 years ago which I have totally ignored aftertaking drugs and finding them useless.

By medical opinion I should have Liver failure, Hepatitis,Lung cancer, Diabetes,!

    Forget it.

Do not bother about what the money mad doctors or the manufacturers’ say and Media , they have to write some thing to get circulation.

You feel and know what is best.

Go to a doctor as a last resort.

Fie with these pseudo health acre ,Consciousness , unconsciousness.!

The influence of the Western Food  on South India is  not noticed by many of us, as we are not conscious of  proselytism.

We are being changed without being aware of it.

    First, the eating Habits.

Normally  South India takes meals in the morning, refreshments in the afternoon and meals at night.

This consisted of a healthy, yet not taxing to the stomach.

Then came the habit of the British Culture.

Breakfast-Are we breaking a fast from 10 pm the last night?

    Then Lunch.

Evening Tea(?) substituted by us with refreshments.

    Then Dinner or Supper.

I am not sure how many know the difference between  Supper and Dinner!

    Timings: Around  8.30 am,1 pm,4, 7 pm and 10 pm.

Compare this with South Indian Timings ; 10 am,4 pm,7 to 8 pm.

  • TV Fast-food Ads and Obesity Linked

    fast-food

Mind has the knack of doing/following things to which it is constantly exposed.

Reinforcement is what makes one pay attention .

The advertisers know this and they do this notwithstanding the bad side effects they produce.

BOSTON – There is a long-held concern that youths who eat a lot of fast food are at risk for becoming overweight. New research to be presented Sunday, April 29, at the Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting in Boston shows that greater familiarity with fast-food restaurant advertising on television is associated with obesity in young people.

“We know that children and adolescents are highly exposed to fast-food restaurant advertising, particularly on television. This study links obesity in young people to familiarity with this advertising, suggesting that youth who are aware of and receptive to televised fast-food marketing may be at risk for health consequences,” said lead author Auden C. McClure, MD, MPH, FAAP, assistant professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth, Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Previous research has shown that watching TV is associated with obesity. Dr. McClure and her colleagues sought to determine whether recognition of fast-food ads on TV is associated with obesity in adolescents and young adults.

The researchers surveyed a national sample of 3,342 youths ages 15 to 23 years. Participants were asked about their height, weight, age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, exercise, consumption of soda or sweet drinks, frequency of eating at quick-service restaurants, how many hours they watched TV each day, and whether they snacked while watching TV.

They also were shown 20 still images selected from television ads for top quick-service restaurants that aired in the year before the survey. The images were digitally edited to remove the brands. Individuals were asked if they remembered seeing the ad, if they liked the ad and if they could name the restaurant brand. In addition, they were shown 20 ads for alcohol.

Results showed that about 18 percent of participants surveyed were overweight, and 15 percent were obese. The percentage of youths who were obese was significantly higher among those who recognized more ads than those who recognized few ads (17 percent vs. 8.3 percent). Even after controlling for the variables listed above, youths who recognized many ads were more than twice as likely to be obese compared with those who recognized few ads.

“A similar association with obesity was not found for familiarity with televised alcohol ads, suggesting that the relationship was specific to fast-food advertising content,” Dr. McClure said. “After accounting for overall TV time, TV ad familiarity was still linked with obesity suggesting that this finding is not simply due to increased sedentary time or an effect of TV programming.”

However, eating more frequently at fast-food restaurants depicted in the ads was not associated with obesity.

“The relation between fast-food marketing and obesity is not simply that it prompts more quick-serve restaurant visits,” said study co-author James D. Sargent, MD, FAAP, professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth. Instead, “individuals who are more familiar with these ads may have food consumption patterns that include many types of high-calorie food brands, or they may be especially sensitive to visual cues to eat while watching TV. More research is necessary to determine how fast-food ad familiarity is linked to obesity,” he added.

“Given the broad exposure of youth to advertising, the more we know about how media and marketing affect young people, the better equipped we are as pediatricians and parents to guide them in making healthy diet choices,” Dr. McClure concluded.

  • On Diet and Why Dieting does not help.

Causes for Obesity and weight gain have not been found conclusively.

By Dieting with the scant knowledge we have often impairs Health and  results in loss of Stamina.

I have seen people who have been on Diet looking shrunken, frame is there but some thing is missing.

    Also Dieting may damage metabolism.

    Individuals are unique.

There can never be a standard Diet for all of us.

My suggestion,in the interest of your health, is,eat what you want in moderation.

    Avoid junk food.

    Shun snacks.

Take one breakfast , two meals a day.

Take fibrous food , vegetables and Fruits9( eat food not simply as a dessert, but eat when hungry-read my blog on How to eat fruit?)

    Eat Dinner before 10 pm.

    Have a good sleep.

    Story:

The most immediate reason that diets don’t work over the long term is that they promote a loss of the internal signals for hunger and fullness that are necessary for normal eating. This was the finding of a classic study conducted by Janet Polivy and Peter Herman at the University of Toronto, published in 1999. In this experiment, a group of dieters and a group of nondieters were given the task of comparing ice cream flavors. Participants in each group were divided into three subgroups. Before getting the ice cream, the first subgroup was asked to drink two milkshakes, the second subgroup was asked to drink one milkshake, and the third subgroup wasn’t given any milkshakes. Next, the researchers offered the groups three flavors of ice cream and asked the participants to rate the flavors, eating as much ice cream as they desired.

The results revealed that the nondieters ate as you might expect: those who hadn’t consumed any milkshakes ate the most ice cream, those who’d consumed one milkshake ate less ice cream, and those who’d consumed two milkshakes ate the least. The dieters, by contrast, reacted in the opposite way. Those who were offered no milkshakes before the taste test ate small amounts of ice cream, those who drank one shake ate more ice cream, and those who’d consumed two milkshakes ate the most ice cream!

The researchers termed what had happened to the dieters “disinhibition,” which occurs as a result of a “diet-mentality.” The milkshake preload had a different effect on dieters than on nondieters. Nondieters, eating in an unrestrained and normal manner, tend to regulate their food consumption according to internal physical cues of hunger and satiety. Therefore, in the experiment, nondieters regulated the amount of ice cream they ate based on perceived fullness. What could be more obvious and natural?

The dieters, however, reacted in the opposite way — the more milkshakes they consumed, the more ice cream they ate. Why did they lose the capacity to regulate their intake? According to the researchers, this “counterregulation” occurs because a milkshake preload disinhibits a dieter’s usually inhibited or restrained eating, almost like a switch: “I’ve blown it anyway, so I might as well keep eating before I go back on my diet.” This is an almost irresistible incentive to go on eating well past physical fullness.

For example, metabolism plays a significant role in determining our weight. Resting metabolic rate refers to the amount of energy the body burns when not engaged in physical activity; it accounts for approximately 70 percent of the calories we burn each day. About 40 to 80 percent of the influence for resting metabolism is apparently inherited. In the journal Nature Medicine, Jeffrey Friedman, director of the Starr Center for Human Genetics, writes, “The commonly held belief that obese individuals can ameliorate their condition by simply deciding to eat less and exercise more is at odds with compelling scientific evidence indicating that the propensity to obesity is, to a significant extent, genetically determined.”

This inherited weight range, known as the set point, is the weight your body settles at when you’re eating in response to signals of hunger or fullness and engaging in some level of physical activity. Our set point acts like a thermostat, seeking to maintain our natural body weight within a range of 10 to 20 pounds. When we take in less food as fuel, our body deals with this reduction by slowing down to conserve energy. Metabolism is lowered, reducing the rate at which calories are burned. Within 24 to 48 hours of beginning a calorie-restricted diet, metabolic rate decreases 15 to 30 percent. Our body has successfully slowed itself down to defend against this self-imposed famine. By contrast, when our body takes in more food than it needs as fuel, the metabolism speeds up and burns calories more quickly. In her book Health at Every Size: The Surprising Truth about Your Weight, Linda Bacon, a physiologist specializing in nutrition and weight regulation, explains that when this mechanism is working properly, it functions as a force that pulls you back to your comfortable range whenever you veer away; however, if you consistently override your body’s signals of fullness, this system becomes broken. The goal is to find your healthy weight, keeping in mind that even if we all ate the same and exercised the same, we wouldn’t weigh the same. Weight is a complicated matter, which can be affected by a variety of factors, including medical issues, such as thyroid problems or polycystic ovary syndrome, the side effects of medications, poverty, stress, and lack of sleep.
