Island Formed Pakistan Earthquake
A massive earthquake on 7.8 Richter scale hit Pakistan and caused the formation of a an island.

A massive earthquake struck near the southern coast of Pakistan today, killing upwards of 100 people, injuring dozens more, and leading to the formation of a small rocky island, according to multiple reports

The epicenter of the 7.7-magnitude quake was in the district of Awaran, a remote and mountainous area where at least 45 people were killed, the BBC said. Another 150 died in the nearby Balochistan province, according to Pakistan’sExpress Tribune newspaper. The island, which is reportedly about 30 feet high and nearly 100 feet in diameter, is located in the Arabian Sea nearly a mile off the nation’s shoreline.

MORE THAN 1,000 COULD BE DEADZahid Rafi, a principal seismologist at Pakistan’s National Seismic Monitoring Center, told CNN that the island’s formation was “not surprising,” given how powerful the earthquake was. CNN says the quake’s tremors lasted about two minutes and that aftershocks could be felt in Karachi, hundreds of miles southeast of Awaran. The BBC added that the quake could be felt into Delhi, India‘s capital. Additionally, the British news service said that about 30 percent of the homes in Awaran had fallen during the quake and that many are feared to be trapped beneath the rubble. The United States Geological Survey has issued a “red” alert for the earthquake, which means the agency is predictingmore than 1,000 could be dead and the cost of damages could rise above $1 billion.

Levitating Homes
A daring approach to Home Building in Earthquake prone areas like Japan.

‘The headline sounds like something from TheOnion.com. Or perhaps the plot of a niche-market Harry Potter sequel (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Antiseismic Architect?) However, the technology is real; and it’s being implemented all across Japan – at 88 sites, to be exact (based on company data as of 06/2011). Air Danshin Systems Inc. (danshin sort of means antisiesmic) was originally established in 2005 to market and sell the technology, which was invented by a man named Youichi Sakamoto. There’s a lengthy interview with himhere (PDF, all in Japanese) if you’re interested.

Levitating Homes.

1. A sensor detects the rumblings of an earthquake.

2. Within .5 to 1 second an air tank pushes air in-between an artificial foundation and the actual structure of the home, lifting it as high as 3cm off the ground.

3. While the earth below violently shakes, the levitating home quietly and patiently waits, returning back to the ground once the tectonic plates have settled.

In addition, the company claims that it’s a low-cost alternative to other earthquake-proofing. On average it’s supposedly 1/3 the cost of other systems and requires very little maintenance. I’m impressed to see that they’re also marketing their technology to larger facilities like laboratories and factories that often house sensitive, delicate and potentially hazardous material. I’m thinking nuclear power plants. If there was a way to implement this technology beneath the country’s 50-some power plants that would really be something.

The company has created a couple video to demonstrate the capability of their product. The first video shows one of their model homes levitating. The 2nd video, which is actually a bit humorous, is a demonstration using actual people. I hope that old man who got shook back and forth is okay.

Sumatra Earthquake Details,Monitoring Links.
I am providing details of the Earthquake that rocked Sumatra,8.7 Richter,which triggered Tsunami Alert in 28 countries.

The first Tsunami is expected to hit Sumatra at 4.21 pm.

India is likely to be spared the Tsunami, though the initial tremors were felt in the Eastern Coastal Regions including Kolkota,Chennai,Bangalore and after shock was off Mumbai,155 km away in the Arabian Sea.
