  • How NSA Listened 540 Million Calls A Month

Edward Snowden , as we are all aware, leaked information on How NSA spied on US citizens and Foreign Governments.

Most , in fact all the taps are illegal as no wiretap can be done with out a warrant and there is evidence of warrant having been issued.

The German Daily Der Spiegel did a cover story on how the NSA tapped the West Germans including its Chancellor Angela Merkel.

A report states that NSA has possibly listened  to 380 million calls in the US and 60 Millions in Spain!

    Subject: Correcting the US figure

It seems that Greenwald already listed the US DNR total, and since he is looking at better images than I am (I am reading the Hindu’s images), I’m inclined to take his total. (though not the interpretation of it, I’ve gone into the reasons enough times)

“There are no precise figures, but last January Brazil was just behind the United States, which had 2.3 billion phone calls and messages spied.”

I have a US aggregate figure from Le Monde (3,095,533,478), Greenwald’s rounded DNR figure from O Globo (2,300,000,000), which leaves the approximate US DNI total to be (795,533,478)

    The revised DNR figures:

    Pakistan: 12.76 billion
    Afghanistan: 21.98 billion
    India: 6.28 billion
    Iraq: 7.8 billion? (blurry image)
Saudi Arabia: 7.8 billion ? (blurry image)
    United States: 2.3 billion
Egypt: 1.9 billion ? (blurry image)
    Iran: 1.73 billion
    Jordan: 1.6 billion
    Germany: 361 million
    France: 70.2 million
    Spain: 61 million
    Italy: 46 million
    Netherlands: 1.8 million
The rest of the world: Lots and Lots

    Total: 124.8 billion.Dec 20, 2013.

    Revised fig. in the Image.

It looks to me a lot like the Le Monde stories will follow the path of the Brazilian and Indian stories. It has occurred to me that this same story can also be told for many, many other countries: der Spiegel has already published BOUNDLESSINFORMANT graphs for the following: Germany, France, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. If we take careful measurements of these graphs, and work out the appropriate scaling, we can determine how many telephone metadata records we have in each of these countries over the same 30 day period (DNR). The accuracy will be plus or minus 1 pixel, scaled appropriately. I have enclosed my chart.

    The bottom Line:

    Germany: 361 Million
    France: 70 Million
    Spain: 61 Million
    Italy: 46 Million
    Netherlands: 1.8 Million

    Total: 539.8 Million

    NSA Listens.

Merkel has nothing to fear domestically from the recent turn of affairs. The election is over, the conservatives and the center-left Social Democrats are already in official negotiations toward forming a new government. No one wants to poison the atmosphere with mutual accusation.

Nevertheless, Merkel must now answer the question of how much she is willing to tolerate from her American allies.

    Posing as Diplomats

A “top secret” classified NSA document from the year 2010 shows that a unit known as the “Special Collection Service” (SCS) is operational in Berlin, among other locations. It is an elite corps run in concert by the US intelligence agencies NSA and CIA.

The secret list reveals that its agents are active worldwide in around 80 locations, 19 of which are in Europe — cities such as Paris, Madrid, Rome, Prague and Geneva. The SCS maintains two bases in Germany, one in Berlin and another in Frankfurt. That alone is unusual. But in addition, both German bases are equipped at the highest level and staffed with active personnel.

The SCS teams predominantly work undercover in shielded areas of the American Embassy and Consulate, where they are officially accredited as diplomats and as such enjoy special privileges. Under diplomatic protection, they are able to look and listen unhindered. They just can’t get caught.

Wiretapping from an embassy is illegal in nearly every country. But that is precisely the task of the SCS, as is evidenced by another secret document. According to the document, the SCS operates its own sophisticated listening devices with which they can intercept virtually every popular method of communication: cellular signals, wireless networks and satellite communication.

The necessary equipment is usually installed on the upper floors of the embassy buildings or on rooftops where the technology is covered with screens or Potemkin-like structures that protect it from prying eyes.

That is apparently the case in Berlin, as well. SPIEGEL asked British investigative journalist Duncan Campbell to appraise the setup at the embassy. In 1976, Campbell uncovered the existence of the British intelligence service GCHQ. In his so-called “Echelon Report” in 1999, he described for the European Parliament the existence of the global surveillance network of the same name.

Campbell refers to window-like indentations on the roof of the US Embassy. They are not glazed but rather veneered with “dielectric” material and are painted to blend into the surrounding masonry. This material is permeable even by weak radio signals. The interception technology is located behind these radio-transparent screens, says Campbell. The offices of SCS agents would most likely be located in the same windowless attic.

    No Comment from the NSA

This would correspond to internal NSA documents seen by SPIEGEL. They show, for example, an SCS office in another US embassy — a small windowless room full of cables with a work station of “signal processing racks” containing dozens of plug-in units for “signal analysis.”

  • Medical Tourism Marred By Middlemen Doctors.

As the world has shrunk, people now go out of their country for Treatment .

The treatment outside their country of birth my be cheaper.

    The reasons are,

    • Government and private sector investment in healthcare infrastructure
    • Demonstrable commitment to international accreditation, quality assurance, and transparency of outcomes
    • International patient flow
    • Potential for cost savings on medical procedures
    • Political transparency and social stability
    • Excellent tourism infrastructure
    • Sustained reputation for clinical excellence
    • History of healthcare innovation and achievement
    • Successful adoption of best practices and state-of-the-art medical technology
    • Availability of internationally-trained, experienced medical staff.
    • The top destinations are, according to patients without borders,

Top destinations are, according to Patients beyond Borders,

“Brazil, Costa Rica, India, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United States,

    for the reason stated.

The Global Market for Medical Tourism .

    Medical Tourism Germany
Sarkis Sargsyan (back) stands at the Klinik rechts der Isar, in Munich, with his wife and brother: Like the Sargsyans, hundreds of thousands of people receive treatment in a foreign country every year. This medical tourism earns German hospitals and doctors roughly €1 billion ($1.35 billion) in annual revenues. In 2011, 82,854 foreign patients were treated in Germany on an inpatient basis and about 123,000 on an outpatient basis.

the market size is USD 24-40 billion, based on approximately eight million cross-border patients worldwide spending an average of USD 3,000-5,000 per visit, including all medically-related costs, cross-border and local transport, inpatient stay and accommodations. We estimate some 900,000 Americans will travel outside the US for medical care this year (2013).”

India is a major destination for Medical Tourism, mainly because of the quality of Doctors ad Treatment and of course, cost.

The cost is low because of the weak rupee against the Dollar and when compared to the cost of treatment in the US, India is cheaper cost-wise.

For the other third world countries the quality of treatment is better .

However even this low-cost Medical Treatment is because of the greedy Corporate Hospitals and some greedy medical professionals and medical Test Centers.

The Doctors prescribe a host of tests not warranted because they get a standard 15% of the cost of the tests.

Surgery cost depends on your purse and is determined whether you are covered under Medical insurance, have a credit and your financial standing.

Please read my posts filed under health on this subject.

In Medical Tourism the touts come into operation.

All Corporate Multi-Specialty  Hospitals have Agents posted abroad like Dubai.

    They literally trap patients.

What they are promised as treatment cost is a fraction of what the patient is ultimately charged .

The patient can not protest as the treatment is complete and he/ she will not be discharged unless the Bill is settled.

Added to this is the illegal practice of the Hospitals’s practice of collecting the patient’s passport, which will not be returned unless the Bill is settled in full.

If some one complains about the Passport, it will be conveniently lost, the Hospitals do not issue receipts for the passports.

But the racket in medical Tourism in the world is ramapant and criminal.

    Read this from Der Spiegel.

Sargsyan, his wife and brother landed in Munich on Sept. 16, 2012. They had already paid €3,500 to the IMZ agency as an advance for the treatment and visas, the Sargsyans say.

According to their account, soon after their arrival, they went to the IMZ broker’s office at the Sheraton München Arabellapark Hotel.

There, they allege they were greeted by a man in a suit, Arsen B., whose business card listed an exotic combination of titles: “Prof. Dr. med. Dr. h. c. med., neurosurgeon – orthopedics, Director – Senior Physician.” B. allegedly promised to make the necessary arrangements for Sargsyan with a network of private clinics and doctors’ offices. The family felt like they had met their knight in shining armor.

However, IMZ disputes this account, saying that Arsen B. was abroad on this date and that it does not have an office at this location.

Sargsyan is sitting in a furnished, two-room apartment in northern Munich as he describes his first few days in Germany. He has just returned from radiation treatment, and the blue mask is lying in his lap.

He was a karate fighter and strong as lightning, says his wife, Nelly, a petite, friendly woman. The couple has been married for 21 years. Nelly’s description of her husband is a far cry from the person sitting on the sofa. He has dark bags under his eyes, and he looks depressed and exhausted. It’s hard to imagine that this man has ever laughed.

Sargsyan talks about how the first appointment took him to the Arabella Clinic, where another colonoscopy was performed. The diagnosis described “a coarse tumor that is not passable.” A tissue sample revealed that the tumor was malignant. Doctors also found metastases in Sargsyan’s liver and lungs. An interpreter with the agency translated for the patient. “The news was bad,” says Sargsyan, “but I trusted the doctors.” He also trusted Arsen B., who seemed to have a plan for everything.

To prevent intestinal obstruction, Sargsyan was given a colostomy. Local doctors performed the first cycle of chemotherapy, followed by radiation therapy. The brother handled financial matters, paying €10,000 to the IMZ office for the initial treatment. Because he paid with a credit card, he was also charged a 5 percent surcharge. “Thank you for your confidence,” the customer receipts read.

  • Neanderthals To Be Back ‘Surrogate Mother Needed’

George Church, Pioneer of Genome Research has disclosed in an interview to Der Spiegel has disclosed that Neanderthal cloning is possible and a surrogate Mother is needed.

Read the interview, which is interesting.

    Neanderthal Hunting.
    Neanderthal Hunting.

‘George Church, 58, is a pioneer in synthetic biology, a field whose aim is to create synthetic DNA and organisms in the laboratory. During the 1980s, the Harvard University professor of genetics helped initiate the Human Genome Project that created a map of the human genome. In addition to his current work in developing accelerated procedures for sequencing and synthesizing DNA, he has also been involved in the establishing of around two dozen biotech firms. In his new book, “Regenesis: How Synthetic Biology Will Reinvent Nature and Ourselves,” which he has also encoded as strands of DNA and distributed on small DNA chips, Church sketches out a story of a second, man-made Creation….

SPIEGEL: Mr. Church, you predict that it will soon be possible to clone Neanderthals. What do you mean by “soon”? Will you witness the birth of a Neanderthal baby in your lifetime?

Church: That depends on a hell of a lot of things, but I think so. The reason I would consider it a possibility is that a bunch of technologies are developing faster than ever before. In particular, reading and writing DNA is now about a million times faster than seven or eight years ago. Another technology that the de-extinction of a Neanderthal would require is human cloning. We can clone all kinds of mammals, so it’s very likely that we could clone a human. Why shouldn’t we be able to do so?

SPIEGEL: Perhaps because it is banned?

Church: That may be true in Germany, but it’s not banned all over the world. And laws can change, by the way.

SPIEGEL: Would cloning a Neanderthal be a desirable thing to do?

Church: Well, that’s another thing. I tend to decide on what is desirable based on societal consensus. My role is to determine what’s technologically feasible. All I can do is reduce the risk and increase the benefits.

SPIEGEL: So let’s talk about possible benefits of a Neanderthal in this world.

Church: Well, Neanderthals might think differently than we do. We know that they had a larger cranial size. They could even be more intelligent than us. When the time comes to deal with an epidemic or getting off the planet or whatever, it’s conceivable that their way of thinking could be beneficial.

SPIEGEL: How do we have to imagine this: You raise Neanderthals in a lab, ask them to solve problems and thereby study how they think?

Church: No, you would certainly have to create a cohort, so they would have some sense of identity. They could maybe even create a new neo-Neanderthal culture and become a political force.

SPIEGEL: Wouldn’t it be ethically problematic to create a Neanderthal just for the sake of scientific curiosity?

Church: Well, curiosity may be part of it, but it’s not the most important driving force. The main goal is to increase diversity. The one thing that is bad for society is low diversity. This is true for culture or evolution, for species and also for whole societies. If you become a monoculture, you are at great risk of perishing. Therefore the recreation of Neanderthals would be mainly a question of societal risk avoidance.

SPIEGEL: Setting aside all ethical doubts, do you believe it is technically possible to reproduce the Neanderthal?

Church: The first thing you have to do is to sequence the Neanderthal genome, and that has actually been done. The next step would be to chop this genome up into, say, 10,000 chunks and then synthesize these. Finally, you would introduce these chunks into a human stem cell. If we do that often enough, then we would generate a stem cell line that would get closer and closer to the corresponding sequence of the Neanderthal. We developed the semi-automated procedure required to do that in my lab. Finally, we assemble all the chunks in a human stem cell, which would enable you to finally create a Neanderthal clone.

SPIEGEL: And the surrogates would be human, right? In your book you write that an “extremely adventurous female human” could serve as the surrogate mother.

Church: Yes. However, the prerequisite would, of course, be that human cloning is acceptable to society.

SPIEGEL: Could you also stop the procedure halfway through and build a 50-percent Neanderthal using this technology.

Church: You could and you might. It could even be that you want just a few mutations from the Neanderthal genome. Suppose you were too realize: Wow, these five mutations might change the neuronal pathways, the skull size, a few key things. They could give us what we want in terms of neural diversity. I doubt that we are going to particularly care about their facial morphology, though (laughs).

SPIEGEL: Might it one day be possible to descend even deeper into evolutionary history and recreate even older ancestors like Australopithecus or Homo erectus?

Church: Well, you have got a shot at anything where you have the DNA. The limit for finding DNA fragments is probably around a million years.

SPIEGEL: So we won’t be seeing the return of the caveman or dinosaurs?

Church: Probably not. But even if you don’t have the DNA, you can still make something that looks like it. For example, if you wanted to make a dinosaur, you would first consider the ostrich, one of its closest living relatives. You would take an ostrich, which is a large bird, and you would ask: “What’s the difference between birds and dinosaurs? How did the birds lose their hands?” And you would try to identify the mutations and try to back engineer the dinosaur. I think this will be feasible.

SPIEGEL: Is it also conceivable to create lifeforms that never existed before? What about, for example, rabbits with wings?

Church: So that’s a further possibility. However, things have to be plausible from an engineering standpoint. There is a bunch of things in birds that make flying possible, not just the wings. They have very lightweight bones, feathers, strong breast muscles, and the list goes on.

SPIEGEL: Flying rabbits and recreated dinosaurs are pure science fiction today. But on the microbe level, researchers are already creating synthetic life. New bacteria detect arsenic in drinking water. They create synthetic vaccines and diesel fuel. You call these organisms “novel machines”. How do they relate to the machines we know?

Church: Well, all organisms are mechanical in the sense that they’re made up of moving parts that inter-digitate like gears. The only difference is that they are incredibly intricate. They are atomically precise machines.

SPIEGEL: And what will these machines be used for?

Church: Oh, life science will co-opt almost every other field of manufacturing. It’s not limited to agriculture and medicine. We can even use biology in ways that biology never has evolved to be used. DNA molecules for example could be used as three-dimensional scaffolding for inorganic materials, and this with atomic precision. You can design almost any structure you want with a computer, then you push a button — and there it is, built-in DNA.

SPIEGEL: DNA as the building material of the future?

Church: Exactly. And it’s amazing. Biology is good at making things that are really precise. Take trees for example. Trees are extremely complicated, at least on a molecular basis. However, they are so cheap, that we burn them or convert them into tables. Trees cost about $50 a ton. This means that you can make things that are nearly atomically precise for five cents a kilo.

SPIEGEL: You are seriously proposing to build all kinds of machines — cars, computers or coffee machines — out of DNA?

Church: I think it is very likely that this is possible. In fact, computers made of DNA will be better than the current computers, because they will have even smaller processors and be more energy efficient.

SPIEGEL: Let’s go through a couple of different applications of synthetic biology. How long will it take, for example, until we can fill our tanks with fuel that has been produced using synthentic microbes?

Church: The fact is that we already have organisms that can produce fuel compatible with current car engines. These organisms convert carbon dioxide and light into fuels by basically using photosynthesis.

SPIEGEL: And they do so in an economically acceptable way?

Church: If you consider $1.30 a gallon for fuel a good number, then yeah. And the price will go down. Most of these systems are at least a factor of five away from theoretical limits, maybe even a factor of 10.

SPIEGEL: So we should urgently include synthetic life in our road map for the future energy supply in Germany?

Church: Well, I don’t necessarily think it’s a mistake to go slowly. It is not like Germany is losing out to lots of other nations right now, but there should be some sort of engineering and policy planning.

  • Voice Against Israel’s Aggression Is Not Anti Semitism

Any criticism of Israel whenever it indulges in activities which may be termed as  ‘terrorist’, is attacked with the inundation that it is ‘Anti Semitic’

Read the following story from Der Spiegel.

Germany collaborated with Israel for building a Submarine for carrying Nuclear Missile .

The investigative reporter who did that article is immediately snubbed as Anti Semitic .

    DPA German journalist Jakob Augstein.
    DPA German journalist Jakob Augstein.

Given the rising trends of anti-Semitic and anti-Israel resentments in German society, it’s probably helpful to focus on the effects of this new quality and tone of Israel criticism in the public discourse. Even Günter Grass may wholeheartedly believe it’s his life’s last mission to communicate Israel’s danger to the world out of love and friendship for the Jewish people and their state. The effect of this trend on media consumers, however, is more important than the motives of more or less relevant individual authors.

Last June’s cover story in SPIEGEL on the German-Israeli submarine deal is an example: ‘Should Germany, the country of the perpetrators, be allowed to assist Israel, the land of the victims, in the development of a nuclear weapons arsenal capable of extinguishing hundreds of thousands of human lives?’ … ‘Should Germany, as its historic obligation stemming from the crimes of the Nazis, assume a responsibility that has become ‘part of Germany’s reason of state?” The subtext is clear: 1. Israel plans to wipe out the Iranian people and thus is equal to the Third Reich. 2. Germany is pressured into this because of the Holocaust.”

The systematic and subtle manipulation of this sort in reports about Israel — whether skillfully staged or unintentional, to a large extent explains why, according to a study on anti-Semitism in German society recently commissioned by the Bundestag (the federal parliament), almost 40 percent of Germans claim that ‘Jews try to take an advantage out of the Third Reich History;’ why 44 percent say they ‘understand that one dislikes Jews, when looking at Israel’s policies.’”

The point in italics is 100 % true.

Israel seems to believe that their sufferings entitle them to indulge in the crimes they have accused of others!

To avenge the sufferings, as it were, the Israelis have a made People with out motherland(Palestinians) , who(Arabs) were the people  throughout the History of the persecution of the Jews were the most tolerant in comparison.

The common belief that the Jews are/were Lily white is erroneous.

If they were why is it they were singled out by nearly all the cultures?

Referring to Mythologies might soothe their conscience.

    http://www.spiegel.de/international/world/ronen-bergman-on-the-conflation-of-criticism-of-israel-with-antisemitism-a-877479.html

Gaza is a place out of the end of times,” Augstein writes in one of the lines quoted by the Wiesenthal Center. “1.7 million people live there on 360 square kilometers. Israel incubates its own opponents there.” Other lines chosen to illustrate the journalist’s alleged anti-Semitism state that US presidents “must secure the support of Jewish lobby groups” and that “the Netanyahu government keeps the world on a leash with an ever-swelling war chant.” Augstein writes that “Jews also have their fundamentalists, the ultra-orthodox Hareidim,” who are “cut from the same cloth as their Islamic fundamentalist opponents.” And he calls “the US Republicans and the Israeli government” insane and unscrupulous.

Perhaps predictably, the inclusion of Augstein, son of SPIEGEL’s founding editor in chief Rudolf Augstein, on the list has launched yet another national debate in Germany about the contours of anti-Semitism and how far one can go when criticizing Israel before being labelled a racist.Germany’s history, after all, has long informed the country’s deep official support of Israel, but its center-left majority displays an almost reflexive affinity for the Palestinians.(Der Spiegel)

It is good that the Mein Kampf is being republished in Germany and Bavaria.

Mein Kampf must be made available with the necessary annotations as to what is to be not followed with explanations thereof.

    Story:

One of the most controversial books in history is about to come back into print in its homeland — something that hasn’t been true in nearly 70 years. On Monday, the German state of Bavaria announced plans to publish an annotated version of Adolf Hitler’s infamous “Mein Kampf,” according to Der Spiegel.

The southern German state has held ownership of the book’s copyright since the end of World War II, the Associated Press notes, but those rights are due to expire in 2015.

“Mein Kampf” is currently banned in Austria and Russia, the Daily Mail writes. But contrary to popular belief, the notorious book is not banned in Germany — Bavaria has simply prevented its printing in an effort to control production, the AP notes.

In January, a German magazine ignited controversy when it tried to publish excerpts from the book alongside critical commentary, the New York Times reports. German authorities took the matter to court, which ruled that any publication of the book violated Bavaria’s copyright.

But now, with the copyright expiration drawing near, Bavaria is publishing its own version of the book and calling it damage controlDer Spiegel reports that the book will include commentaries that condemn Hitler’s arguments.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/04/24/mein-kampf-germany-bavaria-adolf-hitler-memoir_n_1449870.html

A British publisher plans to sell excerpts from Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” in Germany, claiming he wants to demystify the infamous book. But the controversial move could provoke a legal dispute with the Bavarian government, which owns the copyright and refuses reprint permission.

Is it permissible to sit in a cafe and read Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf?” British publisher Peter McGee, 51, has no doubt. “Of course it is. It’s long overdue that a broad public should get the opportunity to deal with the original text.”

And because McGee is so sure he’s right, he plans to serialize extracts of the book in three small 15-page brochures with an initial print run of 100,000 copies each. The front cover features a photo of Hitler with a black bar obscuring his eyes and a headline that translates to “The unreadable book.”

The plans could trigger opposition from Bavarian civil servants, though. Contrary to common belief, “Mein Kampf” is not banned in Germany. But the state of Bavaria, which seized Hitler’s assets after his death, owns the copyright to his infamous treatise and has so far consistently prohibited efforts to reprint it.

McGee likes a fight and is no stranger to scandal. In 2009, he published reprints of vintage Nazi newspapers like Der Angriff and Völkischer Beobachter with print runs of up to 300,000, delivered alongside comments from historians.

    Confiscated By Police

The move caused a minor uproar in Germany, with the conservative Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung warning of an “embellishment of horror” and the Central Council of Jews in Germany labelling the reprints potential “blueprints for budding Nazis.”

The row escalated and the Bavarian government, which also owns the copyright to the two newspapers, dispatched police throughout the nation to seize the republished copies.

    http://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/0,1518,809367,00.html

There have long been periodic calls from historians for “Mein Kampf,” Adolf Hitler’s seminal work of hate and prejudice, to be republished in German. If an annotated, academic version of the polemic comes out, so goes the argument, it could take the wind out of neo-Nazi sails once the book is no longer protected by copyright.

Now, a new version is in the works. According to a Wednesday report on German radio, the Munich Institute of Contemporary History is working on an annotated edition complete with notes on where the ideas Hitler expounds on in his book originated.

But the state of Bavaria, which holds the “Mein Kampf” (“My Struggle”) copyright, says that it doesn’t plan on allowing the new version to hit the shelves before the book enters the public domain.

“The state government is not planning on changing course,” the Bavarian government said in a statement to the Bayerischer Rundfunk public radio station. “No permission has been granted to the Institute of Contemporary History.”

Nevertheless, institute head Horst Möller says that work on the new edition, undertaken by historians Edith Raim and Othmar Plöckinger, will go ahead. “If we complete the text prior to the end of the copyright, we can approach the authorities once again,” he told Bayerischer Rundfunk.'( source : er Spiegel)
