  • New Brain Area Found Assumption So Far ?

I have a good friend of mine, who is one of the top most Neuro Physicians of the world.

Unlike the great scientists and rationalists of Tamil Nadu, Kaunanidhi, Veeramani and Co, he believes in God.

We were talking at my Home over lunch on medical condition.

    Human Brain, the two parts
    Human Brain

No body knows why it is so, nor how the medicine prescribed in controlling it or whether it will have side effects.

When I asked my friend who is treating me,

‘Look, Ramanan,I honestly do not know.

    If it work,s continue.

Do not think it is only with your case.

Most of the cases are this way.

Doctors won’t admit it for it will lower their Image.

As to me I am prescribing praying.”Vaidyo Narayno Hari”(I Pray the Greatest Doctor, Lord Vishnu)

    That’s all.

    Neuro science is still evolving.

We do not know much of Brain functions.

    We are exploring.

Sometimes I wonder how these medicines work!”

This from a famous specialist in one of the most complicated fields of medicines.

As if to prove him news has emerged that scientists have found a new area of Brain.

    Read On.

esearchers have discovered that an area of the brain that was previously assumed to dampen response to stress, in fact does the opposite and directly promotes anxiety. In reporting their findings in the journal Cell, the investigators add a new dimension to the science of anxiety.

They describe how they found a brain circuit that connects an area called the lateral septum (LS) with other brain structures in a way that directly affects anxiety.

Corresponding author David Anderson, the Seymour Benzer Professor of Biology at California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, says:

“Our study has identified a new neural circuit that plays a causal role in promoting anxiety states. Part of the reason we lack more effective and specific drugs for anxiety is that we don’t know enough about how the brain processes anxiety. This study opens up a new line of investigation into the brain circuitry that controls anxiety.”

Figures from the National Institutes of Mental Health show over 18% of adults in the US are affected by anxiety disorders, where people experience excessive worry or tension, often leading to physical symptoms.

Although previous research has focused primarily on the amygdala as being the region in the brain that processes anxiety, Prof. Anderson and colleagues had a hunch that the LS might also be involved, so they decided to study it using mice.

Does the lateral septum promote or inhibit anxiety?

The team set out to investigate a circuit called the septohippocampal axis because previous studies had already mentioned it in connection with anxiety. These had shown that in mice, stress-induced anxious behavior is accompanied by activation of brain cells in the LS, which sits inside this circuit.

But if the LS is active during stress, is it promoting anxiety, or is it limiting it?

Until this study, the belief was the LS dampened the response to stressors. But the team showed in fact the opposite was the case.

They used a technique called optogenetics, where light controls neurons or brain cells, to activate a set of neurons in the LS of mice. The particular neurons had a gene that made them active in response to light.

During this activation, the mice became more anxious. When they tested the effect further, the team found that even a brief burst of activation induced a state of anxiety that persisted for at least half an hour.

This showed that not only were these particular brain cells involved at the start of the anxiety state, but also that this state persists when they are no longer active.

But the reason that – until now – it was thought these brain cells inhibited anxiety was because they are of a type that inhibits other brain cells, says Prof. Anderson. So what was going on?

The lateral septum promotes anxiety via a double-inhibitory circuit

Prof. Anderson and his colleagues decided to test the idea that a double-negative system was involved. Neurons inhibiting inhibitory neurons. And that is indeed what they found.

When they looked at the types of connections the LS made in the brain, they found it was inhibiting neurons in the neighboring hypothalamus, most of which were themselves inhibitors.

Plus, the hypothalamic inhibitory neurons were connected to a third brain structure, the paraventricular nucleus (PVN), which controls the release of hormones like cortisol in response to stress and is known to be involved in anxiety.

The team found a circuit that appeared to act as a double-inhibitor where activating the LS neurons could result in increased stress and anxiety. When they activated the LS neurons, the levels of circulating stress hormones increased, suggesting the PVN was being activated.

And they also tested the converse: inhibiting the LS connections to the hypothalamus reduced the rise in stress hormones when the mice were under stress.

They concluded that this set of results confirms the double-negative idea.”

  • Suicides IT and Stress

Stress, a defense mechanism is found to be a trigger for disharmony, disillusion,Divorces and Suicides.

The WHO study high lights an increase  in the number of suicides in India.

Experts suggest that the rapid economic development, setting of High goals not in tune with Reality, lack of harmony in Relationships as some of the reasons .

The incidence is high in The IT Industry, where people do not realize they build Anxiety at an enormous pace with impossible dead lines, irregular work timings, less time to spend with the family and inability to handle high Income at a young age.

Suicides are not the result of a single event ; it is an accumulation of pressure built over a period of time and it explodes the moment a flash point is reached.

Stress and Suicides in Hard Times
    Stress and Suicides

In a two-part Essay we shall attempt to understand this phenomenon.

Stress is organism‘s defense mechanism to enable it to survive.

Without Stress ,organisms will not be to bring out the best in them, react appropriately.

Inappropriate reaction may lead to the extinction of Life.

When one fights for air, water and other basic needs the urgency is felt and the organism reacts and it is basically instinctive.

Stress has both a psychological and physiological effect.

Psychologically it affects our emotions causing such things as anger, frustration, fear, burnout, anxiety and depression.

Physiologically, stress increases the risk of everything from warts to Cancer.

People tend to mistake Stress for Anxiety, which is detrimental to health.

Anxiety is a conscious deliberation of the events, course of action one is about to perform or has already performed.

Stress is that which drives  to take a course of action which you can not avoid.

    Origins of Stress.

    Man is driven by instincts.

Instincts become Feelings and feelings  turn into Emotions.

Emotions fortified  with Will become actions and repeated Actions become a Habit.

    Basic Instincts.

    Instincts of Survival,

    Thirst,

    Hunger,

    Sex  and

    Gregariousness.

These are indicated  above in the order of priority to the Organism.
When there is a clash of Instincts(which happens at all times during Life) among themselves ,Conflict arises.

These Conflicts are resolved by the organism on the basis of priority to ensure its survival.

For instance, if there is a choice before a Man Water and Food when he is both Thirsty and Hungry, he will choose Water.

Similarly when there is clash between Hunger and Thirst ,Thirst will score.

While resolving these Conflicts, the organism is torn between the instincts and we feel the Stress.

Normally Stress is resolved biologically by the Organism.

But the Cognitive instrument we call the Mind  starts analyzing and it causes anxiety.

We completely forget that in the battle between the Heart and Mind Heart always wins.

    We presume that Mind does.

Therefore, the essential problem  does not concern Stress per se  but our cognition of it.

    Mind is the instrument.

One needs to train the Mind to manage Stress.

    Eradicating Stress is not possible.

Stress will cease ony when we die.

    Stress and Suicides.

“Young Indians are more likely to commit suicide than previously thought, especially those living in wealthier and more educated regions.

According to a study, experts say that  India’s rapid development is driving many youths to despair.
Opportunities that have come with two decades of economic boom and open markets have also brought more job anxiety, higher expectations and more pressure to achieve, mental health experts said.
India has some of the world’s highest suicide rates, with many believing the biggest risk group to be rural farmers facing debt after poor harvests.

However, the study – published in the Lancet medical journal on Friday – says suicide rates are highest in the 15-29 age group, peaking in southern regions that are considered richer and more developed with better education, social welfare and health care.
That puts the young at high risk – a new phenomenon experts said has happened recently as more middle-class youths strive to meet achievement expectations, and new technologies like cell phones and social networking sites help break down traditional family units once relied on for support.
Overall, the report uses a national government survey of deaths in 2001-03 to estimate 187,000 suicides took place in 2010, making it the cause of 3 per cent of deaths that year.
The WHO reports about 1 million suicides a year, which would be a rate of about 14 per 100,000 in a global population of 7 billion. By comparison, the U.S. had 37,790 suicides in 2010, or a rate of 12.2 per 100,000, while India’s rate under the Lancet’s projected suicide tally of 187,000 would be near 16 – far higher than earlier reports and estimates of around 10.
There has been little scientific examination of suicide motives in India.

  • Want to be Scared Of Sleep? Read This

Sleep is a natural healer next only to Time..

If people start worrying about this, then what?

leave Sleep to its own way and Sleep Well.

“The July/August issue of Scientific American Mind made its debut online late last week. Here I divulge some of the more surprising and useful lessons from its pages.

    Dozing Dangerously

Sleepwalking is one of the strangest phenomena I have ever witnessed. Despite its name, it doesn’t resemble any other kind of sleep I’ve seen. To me, it appears as if an odd imposter has temporarily inhabited the body of someone I know. The person’s eyes are open. He or she gets up, strolls or scampers around, and can hug me or grab a drinking glass. He may even talk to me. The slumbering human really seems awake—until it dawns on me that his behavior is distinctly erratic. The person may respond to me—say, take a drink when I give him a glass of juice—but in an odd manner, say, gulping the liquid as if in a huge hurry. His eyes might open wide as if he’s panic-stricken, but the cause of the panic is nowhere to be seen. And he may do nonsensical things such as pouring liquid from a cup into the trashcan.

In 1846, Albert Tirrell was acquitted of the murder of Maria Bickford because he was sleepwalking. By National Police Gazette via Wikimedia Commons.

When a person is sleepwalking, as we report in the current issue of the magazine, the brain is kind of half awake. Some parts, those involved in talking and walking, are operational. But other parts, those involved in reasoning and self-control, are pretty much in lala land, explaining why the person’s actions make no sense. Sleepwalking is apparently common (and usually benign) in children. But in some adults it turns violent (see “Are Sleepwalking Killers Conscious?” by Francesca Siclari, Guilio Tononi and Claudio Bassetti). In rare cases, sleepwalkers have committed murder, and at least half of those with sleep disorders exhibit less serious forms of unintentional violence. In some instances, the murderous sleeper has been acquitted (see illustration). But questions of culpability remain. Was it a strange imposter’s fault? Probably, but the loss of control is frightening for all concerned.

On the plus side, researchers are uncovering the biological roots of such odd actions in hopes of developing treatments. In the process, they are also gleaning clues to the origins of consciousness.

    Microbial Madness

Speaking of brains subverted by demons, consider the influence of gut microbes. One parasite co-opts the intentions of mice such that they are drawn to cats, which, of course, then consume the brainwashed rodents (see “Microbes Manipulate Your Mind,” by Moheb Costandi). In humans, gut microbes can subtly change our moods and emotional states. The “brains” in our guts—a combination of 500 microorganisms that seems to vary from one person to the next—may even explain differences between people in personality as well as disparities between us in symptoms of psychiatric illnesses.

Notably, our bodies’ microbial inhabitants might make us more or less able to withstand stress. Colicky babies, we report, seem to have a less diverse array of germs in their gut, and seem to be predisposed to stress later on. But as adults, we might also be able to deliberately colonize ourselves for better mental health. Early data suggest that probiotics might be able to quell anxiety. Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I am going to make a point of indulging in live-culture yogurt, and not just for the calcium. Taking stress down a notch, after all, can improve productivity.

  • Depression Causes and Cure.

Depression is an expression of being unhappy which you become aware of.

Suddenly you feel that nothing is working out for you and you are at odds with yourself, doubting about your job, relationship and the meaning of Life.

    Some of the symptoms are:

You get the feeling that whatever you are doing at present is worthless and might feel you are searching for something of which you are not sure.

If you happen to read books and if they happen to be depressive you sink further.

Any well-meaning advice will appear to be useless and you might feel despondent.

What one needs to know that there are no individuals or a day with out depression.

    The degree differs.

When the these low down feelings persist you become acutely depressed.

    What causes Depression?

Sometimes there may be an obvious reason for becoming depressed, sometimes not. There is usually more than one cause and different people have different reasons.

It may seem obvious why – there may be life events or changes in circumstance such as a relationship breakdown, bereavement or even the birth of a child – but sometimes it’s not clear. Either way, it can become so bad that you need help.

Often people don’t realise how depressed they are, because the depression has come on gradually. They may try to struggle on and cope by keeping busy. This can make them even more stressed and exhausted. This can cause physical pains, such as constant headaches, or sleeplessness.”

At the adolescent age, impatience to get things done causes anxiety which might lead to Depression.

The inability to achieve the set goals causes anxiety which  may result in Depression.

At an advanced age, insecurity about future,at the middle age concerns about old age might trigger Depression.

It can also be due to some biological reasons like Thyroid, metabolic imbalance in the system.

    • “An underactive or overactive thyroid gland
    • Treatments for depression

“There are two types of treatment available: talking treatments and medication. Both can be accessed through your doctor.”

      Talking treatments

      • Counselling helps you to talk about your feelings in private with a sympathetic professional. Your GP may have a counsellor at the surgery.
      • Cognitive behavioural therapy can help to overcome the powerful negative thoughts that are part of depression.
      • Interpersonal and dynamic therapies can help if you have difficulties getting on with other people. A relationship counsellor might be helpful if you’re having difficulties with your partner.
      • If you have a disability or are caring for a relative, a self-help group may give you support.

      Medication

Antidepressants can be effective if depression is severe or goes on for a long time. They may help feelings of anxiety and help you to deal with problems effectively again.

The effects of antidepressants won’t usually be felt straight away – people often don’t notice any improvement in their mood for two or three weeks.

As well as tablets, an alternative remedy called St John’s wort is available from chemists. There is evidence that it’s effective in mild to moderate depression. It seems to work in much the same way as some antidepressants, but some people find it has fewer side effects. You should discuss taking it with your doctor, particularly if you’re taking other medication.”

Like all medicines, antidepressants have some side effects, although these are usually mild and tend to wear off as the treatment goes on. The newer antidepressants (called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) may cause nausea and anxiety for a short while. The older antidepressants can cause dry mouth and constipation. Unless the side effects are very bad, your doctor will usually advise you to continue taking them.

Four out of five people with depression will get better without help. The shorter the time you have been depressed, the better the chance that it will lift on its own. However, even with treatment, one in five people will still be depressed two years later.

      Support

It may be enough to talk things over with a relative or friend. If this doesn’t help, talk it over with your family doctor.

      • Talk to someone close to you about how you feel. Going over a painful experience and crying it out can help you come to terms with it.
      • Get some regular exercise. This will help you keep fit and hopefully, sleep better. Do jobs around the house to take your mind off thoughts that make you depressed.
      • Eat well, even if you don’t feel like it. Don’t drink alcohol, as this makes depression worse, although it might not seem to at first.
      • If you can’t sleep, try not to worry about it. Do something relaxing in bed such as reading, watching TV or listening to the radio.
      • If you know what is making you depressed, write it down and think of ways to tackle it. Pick the best ones and see if they help.
      • Keep hopeful – this is a very common experience and you will come through it, probably stronger and more able to cope than before.”
One must remember that the treatments are only supports and one can definitely beat depression only by him/herself.
Antidepressants might help to calm the mind chemically ,but over a period of time these drugs might become habit-forming if they are Barbiturate based.
Even Alfazolam  may be contra-indicated for some.
Counseling is effective only if one is ready to receive advice, be it a Counselor or Relatives or friends.
Normally under the spell of Depression, the mind will refuse.
Normal advice is to take safe antidepressants under the advice of a qualified Physician .
      Never exceed the dose.
In general, one must know the facts of Life.
      Life is what it is.
Do not analyse and judge your or other’s Life.
Learn to look at Facts ,not impressions.
We generally carry impressions and hardly look at facts.
Never attempt to ascribe motives for the behavior of others around you.
Planning is fine but too much thinking and planing is unhealthy.
This puts one under pressure because Life has to be run, with interaction with others whether one likes it or not and we can not control what others think of us nor can we control circumstances.
      Plan for a shorter period.
Remember none knows whether he/she will be alive the next second.
Do not think you are indispensable, the world has been here before you were born and will  be after you go.
Never think you are the one who supports Family or you are indispensable at work either.
Do what you have to do with out reasoning out for Life has to felt and Lived ,not analyzed.
Those who feel that they can not reach their goals should know that any activity you undertake depends on various factors, some of them under your control, most of them out of your control.
So do the best you can and not be anxious.
      Results will come.
It is worth noting that if you achieve whatever you want in a very short span of Time, you will have nothing to live for.
Life can be led joyously only when we have something unattainable as well.
      Also have Faith.
Do not question every thing in Life for ultimately you will end up as a mental patient, probably this might take some time.
It could be any Faith , may also be Atheism.
Read Books that are light and Books are Optimistic.
Be with people who are not whiners.
People around those who suffer from Depression must not judge those who are  as they could become  one the next day.
Be positive and talk things that are joyous and optimistic and avoid serious pontificating.
