German multicultural society has failed.
Multiculturalism can work and is working ,including in USA and India. The prerequisite is for the country to treat ethnic communities fairly and it is for the ethnic communities to integrate into the main stream by learning the language and respecting the Majority culture. Certain groups,like Muslims find it difficult(though not all of them);for them Religion comes first.These attitudes must change. Other wise ‘Lebensraum‘( living Space) might revisit. Let us not provoke it.

The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel: “lmmigrants should learn to speak German”

Attempts to build a multicultural society in Germany have “utterly failed”, Chancellor Angela Merkel says.

She said the so-called “multikulti” concept – where people would “live side-by-side” happily – did not work, and immigrants needed to do more to integrate – including learning German.

The comments come amid rising anti-immigration feeling in Germany.

Debt crisis unsettles European economy.
The problem ,apart from financial solutions, needs political Will of the EU as the economies of the EU countries are interlinked and the fact is that some Nations like France, Germany have to bear the cost of PIIGS(Potugal,Italy,Ireland,Greece,and Spain).Let’s see how artificial Union stands up?

Governments in Athens, Madrid and Lisbon struggled on Friday to quell fears of a looming debt crisis in Europe that is pummeling the euro and rippling across global markets, as authorities vowed to impose fiscal austerity and plug their yawning budget deficits. The problem, however, is that investors don’t appear to believe them.

From The Times December 2, 2009 We are in charge now, Sarkozy tells the City-Times.
Artificially brought under one umbrella,Nationalistic feelings are showing up.Clan mentality is Natural.You can not wipe it out by idealistic dialog or by misplaced idealism,especially between UK and France,considering their history.

Alistair Darling has delivered a blunt warning to the EU’s new French finance chief against meddling with the City of London.

As Nicolas Sarkozy gloated over impending curbs on the City, the Chancellor said that such moves would drive financial services out of Europe.

The French President’s glee at the appointment of Michel Barnier as Commissioner for the Single Market took on an edge of menace yesterday when he said that unfettered City practices must end.

“Do you know what it means for me to see for the first time in 50 years a French European commissioner in charge of the internal market, including financial services, including the City [of London]?” he said yesterday.

“I want the world to see the victory of the European model, which has nothing to do with the excesses of financial capitalism,” he said.

His implicit threat was just what Downing Street had feared when Mr Barnier, formerly an agriculture minister, was given the portfolio last week.

Mr Darling, writing in The Times today, says that it would be a “recipe for confusion” if firms were supervised by the EU as well as national watchdogs and that Britain would not accept new laws that could lead to taxpayers picking up the bill for bailouts ordered by Brussels.

He rejects claims that the economic crisis was the fault of the “Anglo-Saxon” model, pointing out that French and German banks were among the biggest creditors of the failed US insurance giant AIG.

Terry Smith, a prominent banker, said that the threat of increased regulation was already threatening the City’s future.

“I’ve never seen so much work going on by companies, individuals and teams of people to evaluate relocation out of the UK,” he said.

Regions angered by EU budget proposals-Financial Times
EU is an Utopian concept.When you seriously analyse Nationalism , you will find it petering out to Regions,then to States within the Region,then districts,to cities.At a critical point like resoruce crunch, we will find the lowest ranked constituent(in fact it is the basic unit),will try to assert and it is justified.
Such being the case,EU shall find the going tough.
Interesting to observe that the much touted one global entity,borderless world in terms of communications and the squabble for resources fighting it out.

The European Commission is pressing for a “root-and-branch reform” of the European Union’s €140bn-a-year budget in a proposal that is stirring outrage among Europe’s regions, which risk losing their grip on vast sums of financial aid.

A Commission document obtained by the Financial Times says the EU should impose tighter national controls on funds that at present are passed directly to Europe’s regions and extend recent cuts in agricultural subsidies. It says the EU should concentrate its regional aid budget, worth almost €50bn a year, on individual member states rather than poor regions within them.

The proposal has angered representatives of rich regions in western Europe, some of which still receive aid, as well as those in poorer central and eastern Europe. All fear a renationalisation of EU aid policy that will lead to a loss of funds and influence over how money is spent.

China appears to retreat?
“The Chinese government dropped explosive espionage charges against executives of a foreign mining giant, the Anglo-Australian Rio Tinto, after a global corporate outcry. And on Thursday, the government said it had backed off another contentious plan to install censorship software on all new computers sold here.”

There is always a sting and a string attached to whatever China does.China is not backing down, but waiting to pounce at an opportune moment.Though unpublished, the current China economic boom is not as much as it wants the world to believe in.At least in countries like US,Economy is open for every one to see and comment;unemployment is being critically discussed.In China except the Statisticians and the top echelons of the Central Comitte, no body knows anything about what exactly is taking place.When there is a protest due to cut back in jobs, it is labelled as rioting among ethnics and suppressed.China is back tracking because it needs West much more than West needs it.Time the West realizes that and apply economic pressure to bring China to acceptable form of behavior,political,human rights and economic.
